Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! HE'S BBB.... you gonna say it? So now what? Rory gonna win this week in Houston? What about Augusta? I had to leave Orlando this morning and it's SNOWING in PA where I am. I need y'all today! BRING IT!

Stuck in my 4th airport trying to get home!! [via mobile]

How many majors for Tiger this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

At first I said 1 but now I feeling like two is not out of the question.

Jacob (Spokane, WA)

Yes! Next The Masters! Go Tiger ; )

Bryan (North of Chambers Bay)

Can you win the Masters hitting just over half the fairways? Tiger finished the week at about 54% fairways hit. I realize Augusta rough isn't that penal but he is missing by enough to bring trees, azaleas, and what not in to play. Or so it seemed.

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Great point.

chris (amsterdam)

what does Vegas say the odds of Tiger taking Augusta?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

Vegas had Tiger at a 4 to 1 favorite two weeks ago. Expect those odds to get even better now.

Matt (Greenville, NC)

I think it's time to revise the prediction for Tiger MC. He's gonna win more than 1 tournament the rest of the year. Also sneak peek Golf Boys 3.0 Verse 1"I'm collecting so many checks, time to write my will. I'm moving out of California cuz' I've had my Phil."

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Great Golf Boys line if Tiger still lived in CA and the lyrics were on screen. As far as the prediction goes, you are definitely correct there. I still say he wins one major this year, but he may win 3 more times before it's all said and done.

Dan (CA)

Last chat you kept posting things about certain courses being good or bad for caddies, but offered no explanation. What do you mean?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

Perfect example is at Arnold Palmer there is no caddie room. A safe place for caddies to go during bad weather. I'll tweet a joke picture David Toms caddie took for me about the locker room. That's just one of the things that make it a bad tournament for caddies. Not the worst, but in the top five. Shame too, but Arnie doesn't respect caddies the way Jack does.

Mark (Halifax)

So.. Tiger is pretty good, eh?

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

Pretty good for a hack. ;)

Austin (Dallas)

You said 4 wins in the US and 2 worldwide with one major for tiger this year, are you sticking by that or would like to change that number?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I'll up it by 1 total and say 7 wins total for Tiger this year.

Stees (DC)

MC, will the amazing play from TW continue at Augusta? Are you worried that he has used up mojo too early? Or will these wins only fuel the fire?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

Fuel the fire but also add to the pressure of having to win a major. Remember it was Tiger that said it's NOT a successful year without a major win. Which is crazy talk to us humans! haha

Jeff (Chicago)

Dead last in the field in driving accuracy, but TW still got the win. Will missing fairways be a bigger issue at Augusta?

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

At some point one of those big peelers is gonna cost him there.

Rob (Upstate NY)

Still no wins by the Europeans on the PGA Tour so far

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

And two years ago people were screaming how much trouble USA golf was in.

Nelson (DE)

Tiger is losing more hair than I realized. Do you think he'll go to the Michael Collins hairdo at some point?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

He better, or maybe for Easter I'll get him a can of that spray on hair!!

Dj (IN)

Do you think Fowler can win a major this year

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Major? No. Tournament, yes.

Mike (NYC)

How does Rickie recover from a finish like this?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Compared to the 84 he shot playing with Tiger at Memorial last year he has a lot to be happy about after the disappointment goes away. He hung with him for 15 holes and was making a run at him.

Cheers (St. Louis)

You can spray it at Augusta and win. That is why Phil has been so successful.

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

yes but it's dangerous to do and Tiger doesn't hit as many "miracle" recovery shots as Phil

Maxwell (Philadelphia, PA)

Can Rory regain the number 1 ranking at Houston? If yes, how well would Rory have to do in order to retake the number 1 ranking from Tiger?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

There's a few scenario's but the easiest way is for him to win... which I think he's gonna do.

Stanton (Louisiana)

Can Tiger win the Masters if he is not driving the ball consistently?

James (Indonesia)

Does anyone realize that while Snead won a tournament 8 times, Tiger can potentially win a tournament 8 times in 4 tournaments (API, Farmers, WGC Bridgestone, Cadillac)

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

First question, no Tiger can't win if he's spraying it all over off the tee. And as far as winning that many times at that many places... we now know why he sets his schedule the way he does.

David (MT. P)

What has Tiger done to regain confidence with the putter?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Steve Stricker is sitting in a deer stand somewhere in WI laughing!

Jeff (Chicago)

After seeing that ridiculous lag putt Tiger hit at #18, what's the best way for recreational players to practice lag putting?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

don't aim for the hole. pick out a leaf or the edge of the green and try and get it as close as possible WITHOUT touching it. Or like Faxon said, try to learn not to care.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Thanks for choosing chat over shoveling snow. Sergio hit a submerged ball and hit from a tree. Do you players ever give their caddies veto power over a dubious shots?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

NEVER. It's ALWAYS the player who has the final say on all things. They write the checks.

Sam (DC)

Why do folks still say that Europeans have not won so far on the PGA tour. You can turn it around and say that still no wins by the Americans on the European Tour so far this year.

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Because the best Euro's play here and the last time they were shutout for a HUGE length of time was '84 and it took Faldo to break the string at Hilton Head. Rory will end this run this week at Houston

Venkat (Chicago)

How would you compare Tiger and Rory at Rory's age...not just golf game wise but mentally?

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

Tiger was and is much mentally tougher.

DwnTwnDelFuego (Washington DC)

I know it depends on the individual - but in general, what's the best approach to getting a player in your foursome out of a funk if they start playing bad?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

talk to them about stuff other than golf and then bring up a great shot they hit one time. It'll put good memories and thoughts about their game back in their heads.

Max (NY)

Keegan seems like a sure thing to be in contention every week, do you see him winning another Major this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

Watch out for him at the PGA Championship later this year. That'll be the one he's gonna have a chance to win on the weekend

Venkat (Chicago)

End of year - whos going to be #1

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

I was torn but now I say Tiger Woods

Michael (NYC )

Do you think regaining the #1 ranking is as important to tiger as winning a major championship?

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

Nope, if he won three majors this year and somehow was ranked #2, he wouldn't care because everyone would know who

Matt (Greenville, NC)

Did Sergio injure himself with that tree shot? Or was that just an excuse to leave a tournament he had no chance of winning?

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

Did you see his scorecard? He wasn't hurt.

Nick (Canada)

You think Tiger has peaked to early for the Masters. If it wasn't for the putter this week he would have probably had a top 10 finish. He always says he wants to peak in time for the majors but it seems like he might have peaked already.

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

He hasn't peaked yet. He can still hit ALOT more fairways. If he starts hitting 65-70% of fairways... it's OVER!

Chris (Belfast)

McIlroy Majors Over/Under 5.5?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

Total? Over

Annoyed Fan (Ignored)

Love seeing some people get multiple questions answered before some people get their first one answered

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

And your question was....

Andrew (WI)

Sam, the two WGC wins this season are technically European Tour events too, so that's 2 wins by Americans on that tour ;)

josie (hudson)

Who is your pic for the masters. It better be Phil!!

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

I've stuck with Rory for a long time and I'm sticking with him one more week at least.

Tim (SF)

Foley's boys go 1-2 at Bay Hill...how much do finishes like this matter on tour in terms of teaching pro's clout with tour pros? I mean it's Tiger, so we all (unreasonably?) expect it - but when Rose, and Mahan make noise etc...do tour pros migrate towards teachers as a result? Foley gonna get more pupils as a result?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

It's big. But I don't know that Sean is taking on any new full time "clients". When you get a stable like he has, he's got the perfect storm scenario and they all are cool with his family time too.

Tavo (Los Angeles)

Hey MC, I don't understand how you're so sure that Rory will win this week. Given Rory or the field, I'll take the field...

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

you take the field, I'll take Rory

DwnTwnDelFuego (Washington DC)

Any side bets or pools between caddies during tournaments?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

There is no gambling at Bushwood sir...

Tom (Syracuse)

Are you going to buy tigers new video game coming out tomorrow?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

I know a guy that knows a guy.

Ken (VA)

DD stated via twitter this past week that he spent a couple of days with Kuchar's coach to get his swing back to the way it used to be. Wants to get rid of his "left" misses. Says the powerfade is coming back. Reason for optimism?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Because if he doesn't believe he can get it back, he might as well quit. As far as should we be optimistic... I'm hopeful but guarded. Not sure if I can speak on DD without letting emotion get involved because I want him to be good again so bad.

Tavo (Los Angeles)

If you had caddied one major win for tiger, which one would you choose?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

US Open Pebble Beach

Steven (Kingsport)

regarding winning the Masters from off the greens: Phil has 3 green jackets and no US Opens, reason Augusta rewards the bold more than she punishes the reckless.

Nick (Canada)

Pros weren't happy that Stricker was helping out Tiger with his putting I bet they're even more upset now lol

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

That's not true. Pros all understood why Stricker helped. Because they've ALL gotten help from other pros. I wanna beat you at your best. If I beat you at your worst, it's empty.

Michael (NYC )

Is there an order of importance for tour players when it comes to major championships? I know in tennis most players consider winning Wimbledon to be the 1 major they most want. Is there a similar consensus in golf?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

It depends on where you're from. But most put the Masters at number 1 but for Europeans the Open is a very close second if not first. PGA is last.

mc (sf)

you said tiger will win 2 majors in 2013 - which ones?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

I said Tiger will win one, the US Open

Dan (CA)

Do you know why Sergio withdrew? Didn't he have just a few holes left? Why give up the paycheck?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

he still gets last place money

Eric (Austin)

I feel like over the last few years Tiger at the Masters is like a bad prom date. He gets your hopes up going into the event, and then let's you down at the big dance. Are there any reasons we should believe that this year is different?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Nope. But those who love him, there's nothing you can say that will change their minds and those who hate him are the same way.

Tom (Verona, WI)

What was your nickname as a caddie?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

I have two. Lil Hootie and Hammer (my initials are MC)

Brett (DC)

I think Keegan's game actual sets up very well for Augusta. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was able to win there. He needs to leave himself some shorter putts than he did today though.

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Not easy to do at Augusta, but yeah, he should be playing well there in two weeks.

Jim (Annapolis)

A lot of talk about Tiger wild off the tee. Mostly right, wasn't it? None of those nasty hooks?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

But he didn't have to hit many right to left drivers so the anti-left swing was in full affect. Nothing wrong with that though, eliminate half of the course. Worked for Nicklaus.

John (Denver)

hmmm, would have thought Oompa Loompa would have been a possibility. JK

Tim (SF)

LOL. Now that is good...from now on it's Lil Hootie only.

Wally (Portland)

MC, why are you always wrong? Just kidding! Thanks for all your hard work buddy!

Matt (Greenville, NC)

Thanks for a good chat as always Hammer or Lil Hootie (seriously?)

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Yeah, my first tournament Billy Andrade thought I was Darius Rucker and talked to me like we went WAY back. I was 50lbs slimmer then too so alot of people made the mistake.

Wally (New Hampshire)

Go CUBS !!!!!!!! er.... sorry Go TIGER!!!!!!

DJL (Chicago)

Like you said, if Tiger starts hitting more fairways its over...there have been some wide misses lately from the tee, but based on his swing/mechanics how far off is he from getting the 65-70% you mentioned?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

He's got a lot of work to do. But it's doable

JT (Alliance NE) [via mobile]

Same old stuff...Tiger wins in spite of his weaknesses, people. When can we all realize that what we're watching is phenomenal?! Blah blah missed fairways blah blah. It's about W's!

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

It IS all about wins isn't it. Don't care how you did it, fact is...

Aaron (Wisco)

Read an interesting article from ESPN The Magazine (shameless plug) about Tigers freshman year at Stanford. We all think of Nike, Elin, Lindsey Vonn, Tiger-mania. Interesting to hear Begay talk about Tiger as a dweeby kid who wasnt athletic enough for pickup basketball.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

WOW!! That was the fastest hour yet and with the most questions comments I've ever had.If I didn't get to you, hit me on twitter @ESPNCaddie or email me at ESPNCaddie@gmail.com.Let's do it again this Friday...Same bat time, same bat channel!!Thanks everyone!MC
