Hey, sorry for the delay. Was recording a podcast with Keith Law and we ran long. To the questions!
Have to choose between Darvish and Price. Answer is:
Great question ... I'll go Price. But I'd love to see how each would fare in the other's home park.
Miguel Cabrera is gone in my AL points pool. What should I do? Grab Beltre or gamble on Longoria early on or wait six-seven rounds and grab Middlebrooks, Seager or Moustakis? And which one of those should I grab?
Oops, two straight from Tom ... wait and grab Seager. Like him a lot and he'll probably last longer than Middlebrooks.
Could Trevor Rosenthal get the closer job is Boggs struggles?
Sure. Love his fastball/curveball combo. Although I don't think Motte is expected to be out too long?
What makes a pitcher a ground ball pitcher... coincidence? Is there such a thing as a pop-up pitcher? I purposely didn't say fly ball as that would mean they made somewhat decent contact.
Generally, if you pitch lower in the strike zone you're a ground ball pitcher. There are guys like Kyle Lohse who throws a sinker but is actually more of a fly ball pitcher. And, yes, there are a few pitchers who seem to have a unique ability to induce infield pop-ups, Matt Cain being the prime example.
Wells, Jeter, Ichrio, Tex, Youk... Yankees have a great 2008 lineup in 2013.
Opening Day lineup: Gardner CF, Ichiro RF, Cano 2B, Youkilis 3B, Hafner DH, Wells LF, Rivera 1B, Nunez SS, Stewart C. Sweet!
earlier today you retweeted something someone sent you criticizing a "27" article. what article was that referring to?
27 reasons the Yankees will finally collapse. Here's the link: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/33988/twenty-seven-reasons-yankees-will-collapse
Kyle Lohse to the Brewers. Can you convince Brewer fans its a good thing?
I love the signing actually. In present-day dollars, it's only about $9.5 million per year. He's a good pitcher. Fly ball guy, which could hurt him a bit in Milwaukee, but he has a pretty good outfield defense behind him. And I think the Brewers DO have a chance this year. Only won five fewer games than the Cardinals last year and that was with the league's worst bullpen. Plus, Brewers are in win-now mode: Braun at his peak, Aramis maybe has one more good year, Weeks and Hart aren't getting younger, etc.
Do you think the Tigers will go from Aweful Defensive up to Average? Is Hunter, a full year of Infante worth that much? And while Miggy did better than expected, can he be expected to match or even to improve defensively (relative to last year)
The biggest liability last year was Boesch, who graded as one of the worst defenders in the league, according to Defensive Runs Saved. Cabrera and Fielder were actually only a few runs below average. BUT ... will they be that good again? But going from Boesch to Hunter could be a 20-run gain -- that's two extra wins just on defense.
Everyone says Spring stats don't count. Is that true for a guy like Shaq Thompson, who might actually get a hit in a minor league B game soon?
What grade would you give the Reds for their handling of Chapman from 2010 - now? My opinion, Overall, 4.6 fWAR = C-, too many what ifs. 2010 = B, 2011 = D (began the cycle of failing to develop as SP), 2012 = A, 2013 = D. They built a very expensive bullpen ($46 million for Bronxton, Marshall, Madson + prospects in trades) from not having a clear direction with him.
Exactly. So you end up with a smaller-market team paying too much in the area where teams SHOULDN'T spend big. And you're left without a real center fielder on the roster and hoping Ryan Ludwick has another surprising year.
Can you please create a WAR-only fantasy league and include me in your league? Why aren't these available? You wants to try and weight less-meaningful counting stats together?
But which WAR do we use? I'm sure those leagues have to be out there, no?
Maurer has to be in the M's rotation, right? What do you think his ceiling is?
I think so, especially after shutting down the Reds yesterday. I think it will be Felix, Iwakuma, Saunders, Beavan and Maurer. Erasmo Ramirez heads back to Tacoma. (He hasn't been bad but has had some elbow tenderness or something.) Mauer has No. 2 upside, mid-90s fastball, slider, working on a changeup. Was hurt most of his career until last year.
Do you get annoyed with sports media narratives, such as the Dbacks and their "grit." A lot of the more advanced analysts like the Diamondbacks but all of the "old school" or "classic" baseball writers just say things like "lolgrit."
I used to get more annoyed with that kind of stuff, but in the Diamondbacks I think they actually DO believe in it on some level. Of course, only good teams are "gritty," right? Every hear a bad team described as having good chemistry or good grit?
I'm not sure how I feel about Domonic Brown, but will he at least be a better option than Delmon?
How's that bracket looking? Being a WC guy, that Gonzaga kill your West Bracket like mine?
I had Gonzaga over Miami in the final. Like I tweeted: You think I would have learned 10 years ago to stop betting Gonzaga.
Without looking at Cot's, I think the Brewers and Reds are maxed on salary for 2013-14. Is that smart?
More of an issue for the Brewers, since the Reds have more depth in the minors (ie, cheap) with guys like Hamilton and Cingrani. Brewers are in trouble if any of the main stars suffers a big injury. But I like that both teams are spending and going for it and pushing their payrolls to the limit.
When should the Pirates call up Gerrit Cole
I think a few starts in Triple-A will suffice. That gives the year extra of service time even if it does hurt you in arbitration down the road. But he's one of their five best starters.
Sanchez or Hellickson in an AL only 4 x 4 roto?
I'm not the fantasy expert, but I'd probably go Sanchez -- more of a sure thing with wins, more K's, won't kill you with WHIP or ERA.
At least I can get good tickets to the Stadium at a cheap price this year! Will remind me of 1990-92.
I like the positive thinking there, Tarek. Let's hear it: How many wins for the Yankees this year?
Could you see Dayan Viciedo breaking out and becoming a legitimate power threat?
I don't see it. Too many holes in his approach. Don't think he becomes a 30-homer guy.
How many Jeff Suppan jokes can we expect this summer regarding Lohse? I put the over under at 50 million and have the over.
What if the Brewers get the last laugh and beat out the Cardinals for a playoff spot?
Biggest obstacle to the Nats this year is _____?
the fact that the Braves could be very, very good.
Idea for the WBC. Play it in October, interspersed with the MLB playoffs. Staff teams with best players from the teams that don't make playoffs. Have the championship game the day before game 1 of the WS.
Baseball would never do it. Can't steal attention from your showcase event. And don't forget, Japan would have its own playoffs going on as well.
Biggest bust team this year?
Do the Yankees count? I'd say them and the Dodgers. Maybe the Rangers.
Do players start asking for trades out of San Diego for their own preservation? Their injury luck over the last year+ has been miserable.
No kidding. Feel bad for the Pads. Can't catch a break.
There's a lot of talk about Jedd Gyorko making a big impact this year. Some people have compared him to Chase Utley. What do you make of him?
He's not Chase Utley. But few second basemen have ever had the peak value of Utley. Think of all things he does/did well: Great glove, power, terrific SB percentage, hit for average, walks and HPB gave him a great OBP. Gyorko looks like he can hit, but he's not going to be Utley in the field or on the bases. Don't read me wrong: Good player. But Utley was very special when he was at his best.
A few chats ago you seemed really high on the Dodgers and Angels, even going as far as to call the Dodgers a serious World Series contender. Recently you said the Dodgers and Angels would both miss the playoffs with the Dodgers likely to be a huge disappointment. Did something happen to change your opinion? Thank you.
Did I say that on the Dodgers? I may have. I mean, sure, you have to consider them a World Series contender with all that talent, but I see a lot of question marks. I think the Angels are overrated, but I'm picking them to make the playoffs. As for what happened: Greinke's tender elbow, Hanley goes down, Crawford's health ... with the Angels, Pujols' foot could be huge.
The mostly likely Tribe pitcher to not last in the rotation is Myers -- he got absolutely hammered this Spring. Either Carrasco or Bauer takes his spot before June -- agree?
Makes sense. He's never started in the AL. Let's see how that works out.
Can Jeter play shortstop this season? He can't even run full-out yet and opening day is this weekend. Thanks
I think that's sort of a million-dollar question hanging out: Considering the defensive metrics already rated his range as about the worst in the majors, what's it going to be now? Even if the ankle eventually improves, how good is he going to be out there? And will the Yankees have the guts to say, no, you're no longer a major league caliber shortstop?
What do you think are the power teams in the NL this year?
Nationals, Braves, Reds are my top three.
Yankees: 77 wins. Mets: 79 wins. The Bronx weeps...
Seriously Gonzaga or Miami, come on haven't you paid any attention to the Big Ten this year.
No ... didn't catch hardly any college hoops this year. Just seemed to have lost interest in recent years. Still love the tournament, of course.
Hey Dave, Ever been to the Negro League Hall of Fame in KC? It's pretty amazing.
No, need to make a trek there sometime.
Good question. I had Adam Eaton, but now that he's out ... let me see ... maybe Shelby Miller since he got that rotation spot. Or maybe Oscar Taveras is just too good to keep down. Chatters?
This feels weird to ask, but do you see any way the Yankees can keep up with the rest of the division this year?
Sure, Sabathia, Kuroda, Pettitte, Hughes, Nova/Phelps could still carry that team to 90 wins.
Dodgers are hit or miss, if Donnie baseball platoons a lot of his players and Kershaw and Greinke pitch lights out, they will be WS Favorites. But Greinke may get hit, Crawford, AGon and Hanley may play awful and Donnie batting L. Cruz 2nd may get him fired. They are a huge hit or miss team this year.
Do you think "staying healthy" and being "durable" (as in player x is durable or "can't stay healthy") is actually a skill or is it just a chance thing? Strikes me as a chance thing and pretty much non-projectable -- except for you can sometimes see that a pitcher's deliver is setting him up for future injury.
I think durability is absolutely a skill. Look at guys like Jeter, Fielder or Ichiro, who play 150+ games ever year (or 160 in Fielder's case). Maybe some of it luck (Fielder) but guys like Ichiro and Jeter do keep themselves in great shape. (Think of all the stretching Ichiro does.) More random with pitching although some will tell you that those with "clean" deliveries are better bets to stay healthy.
NL ROY is Puig - not really, but it'd be a great story if he was.
Phil Hughes-over/under on a 4 ERA?
What are the odds Wil Meyers flames out and becomes Colby Rasmus 2.0 (high k's, low babips cancel out power/patience)?
Very interesting comparison. Hadn't though of that. In fact, did Rasmus strike out in the minors as much as Myers did?
Hi David- Don't you think the Twins are jumping the gun on Hicks. I like him but maybe 250 AAA at-bats would do him good. Then bring both him and Arcia up at the same time and forget about Parmelee in right. Good Idea?
Completely agree. From what I remember, Hicks has started slowly at each level he's been promoted to.
If Jeter isn't able to play shortstop anymore, where will they play him? He doesn't hit enough for a corner or DH.
He hit well enough to DH, but they have Hafner. You could move him to third and Youkilis to 1B (if Tex is out).
Is Harper a serious MVP candidate like some people suggest? What kind of line would you expect from him this year?
Yes. I'll say .285/.375/.525, 30 HR, 25 SB.
The difference down the line from cutter to slider to slurve to curve is sometimes very hard to define. Do analysts/announcers call it based on what they see, or what the pitcher says he is throwing?
Well, the good ones know what the pitcher is throwing. Although sometimes the pitcher calls one thing when it really looks like something else.
Porcello. This spring. Legit? Part of me wants to believe he's only 24 and still young enough to make a leap, the rookie who pitched play in game leaping to that legit level... Part of me is it's only spring, so what. Help me out
I have my doubts. Still young, but has a lot of MLB service time. Not sure he's suddenly going to make a big leap.
Care to make a final ruling on what Josh Rutledge will be in 2013?
What should the Sox do with Bradley?
Keith Law and I talked about this on his podcast today. I'd start him in the majors (well, I'd wait 10 days to save on service time) because I have confidence in his approach. Keith believes there's nothing wrong with a month or so in Triple-A.
Worst team in the majors other than the Astros?
Yankees? JUST KIDDING. Probably the Marlins, although their rotation could surprise. Maybe the Rockies.
Hello Mr. Schoenfield. Do you think the Royals will sit Billy Butler during interleague play? Or will they find a way to get him on the fireld, and at which position? Thanks
I'd play him at first and put Hosmer in the outfield. I think they did that a few games last year.
After following the Astros this spring I can see this team pulling in no less than 70 wins. What say you?
I'll take the under.
David Wright is playing in two spring training games at the same time -- he's DH'ing in both, and running from one field to the other. Gotta love spring training!!
What is your favorite ST cliche? Mine is 'the guy is in the best shape of his life'.
"He's been working on his swing."
Sup DS? Grew up in Wa(Yakima)living in TC now. I really miss the M's and Safeco. Easily top 5 best stadiums in MLB.
Saw many American Legion games in Yakima back in the day! Great support of amateur baseball back then.
Rasmus had a sig. lower batting average, lower HR totals, and walked less than Myers
There you go. Thanks!
Technically, it is the "Negro Leagues Baseball Museum" in Kansas City -- they don't call it a "Hall of Fame." And it is outstanding and absolutely worthwhile to visit, a must for any baseball fan.
I wasn't dogging the Lohse signing by the Brewers but the comparisons to Suppan are going to be made, that's all. I have less faith in this Cardinals team than I've had in a while.
Over/under 38 combined wins from Harrison/Yu this season?
That's a lot. Under.
I don't have a problem with the Hicks thing. They told him it was an open try out and he won it. If he struggles, they can still send him to AAA and stop his clock. And if he plays well, great. He's already 23, it's not like he'll break if he struggles in April.
I'm I crazy to think that the Braves have more than a legit shot to overtake the Nationals and win the NL East? I like the Braves offense better and if Kris Medlen lives up to his hype, I think they match up starting rotation and bullpen with the Nats.
Not crazy. I still like the Nats but if Teheran is for real ... and Gattis. Love that guy!
since you just need 20 days down at any point in the season to delay the service time, with Ortiz out, Sox should keep Bradley up now and see where he's at when Papi is back. If he's raking, keep him and maybe find a time later in the season. if he's not, send him down then for 3 weeks to get back on track and then back up. many problems solved!
David,What future all-stars should I make sure I see when they come through Richmond this year in the Eastern Leauge?
I'd have to check into that. I'm hoping the Twins promote Miguel Sano past high A to Double-A New Britain so I can check him out.
how will david freese going on the DL effect the cardinals, I know its only supposed to be a short stint but frosty is injury prone, so would the cards be in trouble if he spent extended time on the DL
Cardinals have plenty of depth -- Descalso can play there, Craig in a pinch. Assuming it's short stay, not a big deal, but like you said, could be a bigger an issue down the road. (In fact ... Freese, Beltran, Craig, no shortstop ... Cardinals have a few injury-prone guys.)
Where can I find your podcast with keith?
Just recorded it. Should be up sometime this afternoon. For Insider subscribers only, however.
Gattis, one of the weirdest man crushes by an entire fan base I've ever seen.
Its been reported Michael Wacha has already been promoted to AAA memphis, will we see him up the the big league club this year? the guys gonna be an absolute stud right?
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. But the Cardinals keep coming up with pitching, don't they?
Hey, have to cut this short. I'm already 12 minutes late for a meeting. Thanks, everyone! Next week we can talk about real games!
