Chat with James Walker

James Walker
  (4:00 PM)

Welcome to our latest AFC East chat. Let's get it started.

Keanu (Honolulu)

James, what do you think is the best way to address the Dolphins OL situation: trade for Albert, sign Andre Smith or Winston, or draft?

James Walker
  (4:02 PM)

Interesting question, Keanu. The Dolphins are confident in Jonathan Martin's ability to move to left tackle. They feel it gives them flexibility to sign a RT like Winston at an affordable rate as oppose to overpaying for Albert. I think Miami should look in the draft for a potential LT or sign Winston and play Martin at LT. Trading a high draft pick and providing a large extension for Albert is too much.

Mattieu: (Plattsburgh, New York) [via mobile]

I wouldn't trade up to get him, and i don't think the Jets will, either, but is there any chance Geno Smith falls to them at

James Walker
  (4:04 PM)

Considering New York's need for a QB, you can't rule it out Mattieu. But the Jets appear set on going with a veteran this year. That will be either Mark Sanchez or David Garrard. The Jets have too much money already tied into the QB position. They have to spend on other positions.

Mark (Iowa)

What do you think are the chances of Miami picking up Dee Milliner in the draft?

James Walker
  (4:05 PM)

Not great, Mark. Milliner is a top-five pick and it will be costly to trade up (at least) seven spots. The Dolphins have the draft capital to do it. But I think Miami would be better served using the extra picks it would give up. The Dolphins could use depth in several areas.

Candy (Slippery Rock)

Hello James, could the Dolphins cut any more players like Davone Bess or Dmitri Patterson to get more cap space since neither appear worth their contract at this point?

James Walker
  (4:08 PM)

Patterson is definitely a possibility, Candy. Patterson's contract, which was signed in Cleveland, makes him an easy cut. However, Miami is so thin at corner that the team is waiting to see if it needs Patterson to return. Bess will stick around for depth purposes. He's actually a pretty good player, although it looks like his role could be very small if he makes the final roster this summer.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Bills will Select Geno Smith or Matt Barkley in the 2013 NFL Draft since now that the Bills Need a QB Badly?

James Walker
  (4:09 PM)

I don't know if Smith will fall to No. 8, Chris. But if he does, the Bills will seriously consider it. They've been scouting Smith like crazy. I don't see Buffalo taking Barkley at No. 8. Too many questions and he isn't an ideal fit for Buffalo's system.

Allens (Miami)

Where would you rank Miami in the Conference at this point?

James Walker
  (4:12 PM)

It's a little early for predictions. But it's no secret that New England will be the favorites until proven otherwise. The Dolphins are my sleeper pick this year, but they have to prove it on the field. I'm not optimistic about Buffalo and New York this season. But let's see how the rest of the offseason goes.

ralph (new york)

dolphins 2nd round tight end??

James Walker
  (4:13 PM)

That's a little early, Ralph. The Dolphins signed Dustin Keller to a one-year contract this year. So the need is plugged. Miami also drafted tight end Michael Egnew in 2012 and need to see if he's ready to develop. Drafting another tight end that high would be giving up on Egnew.

Danny (Westchester)

Any chance that Sanchez can revive his career ? Morninhweg and David Lee are huge upgrades over what they had last year. Maybe he can become another Alex Smith ? What do you think ?

James Walker
  (4:16 PM)

There's always a chance, Danny. But I just don't see Sanchez's ceiling being very high. Sanchez is entering his fifth season and he's going backwards. Is Sanchez truly as bad as he was in 2012? Maybe not. But I don't think he's significantly better, either.

Brian (New Jersey)

True or False?Manti Te'o media attention rivals Tim Tebow's. Therefore Manti Te'o would be best served being drafted by a small market team. (*wink* Buffalo *wink* *wink*)

James Walker
  (4:17 PM)

I don't think Bills fans would be very happy if Manti Te'o goes No. 8 overall.

Jack (Ohio)

What Rex Ryan must do to keep his job with the Jets this season?

James Walker
  (4:19 PM)

It's pretty simple. He has to make the Jets a winner next season. The Jets aren't going to put a number on it. But nine wins and/or the playoffs would be a safe assumption. I think that's asking too much with the roster he has. But we will see.

Mike C (Brick, NJ)

What do the Jets plan to do with Tebow? Will he be on the roster for their first game?

James Walker
  (4:21 PM)

Tim Tebow most likely will be traded or released by the Jets this offseason. The team is holding out hope that it can get a draft pick for Tebow but no one is buying it.

Sean (Colorado)

Obviously Tebow is not going to make it as a quarterback in the NFL...has there been any indication he is willing to switch positions aside from the special teams duty he did last year or will it come down to being cut without a job to make it happen?

James Walker
  (4:24 PM)

Tim Tebow is under contract with the Jets. So other teams cannot have those discussions. To my knowledge, the Jets have not talked to Tebow about changing positions. I seriously doubt Tebow is in New York's plans for next year. So there's no reason to discuss switching positions.

Sean (Colorado)

If the Jets or Bills had Tannehill instead of their respective messes at QB, would they be playoff contenders?

James Walker
  (4:25 PM)

They would be better teams, yes. But I don't know about the playoffs. None of that matters now. Tannehill is Miami's QB. The Bills and Jets must find their own.

Sebastian(Stuart, FL) [via mobile]

Is Tavon Austin a possibility for the Dolphins at 12?

James Walker
  (4:27 PM)

The Dolphins filled their holes at WR in free agency with Mike Wallace, Brandon Gibson and keeping Brian Hartline. Austin is not a possibility any longer at No. 12.

zeke (san antonio)

im excited to see what lamar miller can do, in his short time in the games last season he showed great signs of being an explosive and productive back. i feel he was a steal in the 4th rd. what do you think about miller?

James Walker
  (4:29 PM)

I really like Miller's potential. He has surprisingly good vision for a young RB. Miller also is quick and has good explosion. My biggest concern is his pass blocking. Miller got beat often in one-on-one situations against linebackers. He needs to get stronger and improve technique.

James (England)

Do you think that Chandler Jones is going to emerge as a top tier DE this season?

James Walker
  (4:31 PM)

I expect Chandler Jones to make a nice jump in Year 2, James. Jones got off to a fast start before getting injured. Jones could be a 10-sack player if he stays healthy and continues to improve.

Justin G (Bay Area)

Not sold on D. Thomas for the fins, do you think we look for a RB later in the draft such as Marcus Lattimore (assuming he is fully recovered) or Montee Ball?

James Walker
  (4:34 PM)

Daniel Thomas has his limitations. But keep in mind, he's just a backup. The Dolphins just need Thomas to carry the ball 5-10 times a game. That's not asking for much.

Alex(New York [via mobile]

I don't think the jets are as bad as some people think, with better QB play i think they would of been a playoff team, if holmes comes back healthy and sanchez plays better i think they can make the playoffs, what do you think?

James Walker
  (4:37 PM)

The Jets won six games last year and lost at least seven starters from that team. Who are the replacements? Do the Jets have a better roster now than a few months ago? I don't think so. I don't want to get into predictions in March, but they do not look like a contender to me.

Bill (Syracuse)

How would you feel about the Bills potentially trading down in the first round and picking up a QB prospect late in the first round?

James Walker
  (4:39 PM)

The Bills could use the extra picks this year. However, Buffalo needs playmakers and impact players. There's a better chance of getting one at No. 8.

Justin G (Bay Area)

Seeing how B. Marshall and V. Davis were traded because of their character issues do the Dolphins look at drafting T. Mathieu in the late 3rd or 4th round? Could use the depth at CB and he would be a special team player as well.

James Walker
  (4:40 PM)

He's not a Joe Philbin guy, Justin. Character is big for the Dolphins under Philbin. I don't see Miami being the team to take the risk.

WyattBurp (Detroit)

Dolphins. I'm a Detroit Lions fan. We just got Reggie Bush! I think he'll do wonders for our run game. Will the Dolphins regret letting him go?

James Walker
  (4:42 PM)

It's a good move for the Lions, Wyatt. But the Dolphins won't miss Bush much. Miami really likes Lamar Miller and he should be able to fill Bush's role. Where Bush will be missed most is in the locker room. Bush was a natural leader and very professional. He will be an asset to the Lions.

Nick (NY)

so who shoots the moon to pick up Clowney next year, Buffalo, or the Jets?

James Walker
  (4:42 PM)

Let's get through the 2013 draft first, Nick.

Don't draft a QB (Pretty Please)

I don't like the idea of Buffalo drafting a QB at 8. Everyone says they're "desperate" but would it really be such a terrible crime if they drafted best player available to build up the defense and wait on a QB till next year? I think we should give the QB job to Tarvaris Jackson and Aaron Corp and play out the season. May put Buffalo in a better draft spot next year for a QB. Thought?

James Walker
  (4:44 PM)

It's not a good year to jump for a QB. But do you really want Tarvaris Jackson as your starting QB next season? That's a formula for a losing season. At least with a young QB on board, he can be developed during the season.

Kate (NY)

Where would you rank Barkley among recent USC QB's (Palmer, Leinart, Sanchez) when they came out of college?

James Walker
  (4:47 PM)

Definitely below Carson Palmer. I know Palmer is not the QB he once was after injuries. But Palmer was a prototype QB coming out and his first several years with Cincinnati. He had tremendous talent. I was never high on Sanchez and Leinart. So if Barkley is not better than those two, he's in trouble.

KC (Washington, DC)

Would Buffalo be better off taking Cordelle Patterson in the first round and then someone from the Nassib/Barkley/Glennon/Jones/Manuel/Wilson grouping in the second? Or is Geno Smith that much better than the second round guys?

James Walker
  (4:51 PM)

This would be the "Bengals approach" to things. Cincinnati recently took a WR (A.J. Green) in the first round and then the QB (Andy Dalton) in the second round. It worked out for the Bengals. The problem is Patterson doesn't rate anywhere close to Green. But it's certainly another avenue Buffalo can take.

Brian (New Jersey)

Are you surprised Karlos Dansby is still available 14 days after being cut by the Dolphins?

James Walker
  (4:53 PM)

I'm not too surprised. Dansby is a good player. But he was cut during free agency. Teams didn't have time to do their homework and determine his market value. So that's the process going on now. But Dansby is a solid player.

Sam (NYC)

How big a factor does character play in the draft? Are teams more willing to take a chance on a Geno Smith or Matt Barkley given their character and work ethic? Even though they may not be Andrew Luck or RGIII caliber.

James Walker
  (4:55 PM)

Character is always imporant, Sam. Some teams view it bigger than others. Teams want to make sure their investing their millions into the right first- and second-round picks. After that, teams can afford to take a reach on certain players. The risk isn't as high.

Nick (Connecticut)

What are the chances the Patriots Sign John Abraham?

James Walker
  (4:57 PM)

Abraham is still on the radar, Nick. But the Patriots have their price for certain players and rarely budge. New England will wait out the market for Abraham before making a move.

hi (JW)

so do you think the jets will take a QB in 2014?

James Walker
  (4:59 PM)

Let's focus on this draft. I expect the Jets to take a developmental QB this year, but not in the first round. New York's Mark Sanchez has the leg up for now and David Garrard will compete.

Jake (Iowa)

I think the Dolphins can really close the gap between them and the Patriots this coming season, what do you think?

James Walker
  (5:00 PM)

Miami definitely put itself closer to New England. But how close? That will be determined on the field. The Patriots still have Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. That's the two big advantages the Dolphins must compete with.

James Walker
  (5:01 PM)

Everyone, thanks again for the great questions. Be sure to check out the AFC East blog for all the latest news and analysis.
