Chat with William Wilkerson

William Wilkerson
  (3:59 PM)

What it do everyone? Thanks for joining this week's HornsNation chat. Just got back from Pro Day where Vince Young continued his trek back to the NFL. We've got that to talk about, Texas' sophomore day, the state of Longhorns basketball, spring game, etc. Let's get to it.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the Starting Defense in College Football for Texas in 2013?

William Wilkerson
  (4:00 PM)

Jeffcoat, Jackson, Brown, Reed, Hicks, Edmond, Jinkens, Diggs, Byndom, Phillips, Thompson.

gary (stillwater)

Love your stuff William. I have a few questions. Should Texas fans be worried about the commitments of Knox and Gresham? Where do you think we stand with Jamal Adams? Who would you say are the top 2014 recruits that are the biggest "must gets" for ut? Thanks Will!

William Wilkerson
  (4:04 PM)

Hey Gary, really appreciate that. Thanks for reading. I think there is reason to be worried, without question. Gresham told us yesterday that he's shutting down his visits and is solid with Texas. But you just never know with Knox. I think he sticks with Texas in the end because the staff is being so lenient with these other visits but the more he sees elsewhere the more he is inclined to leave, right?... Texas is solid with Adams but there is a long way to go in this one. UT is selling him on the Kenny V. role. I think it'll be good for Texas that Adams will be able to see KV go so high in the draft. ... biggest must-gets to me are Adams, Thomas, Darrion Johnson, Nick Watkins, Cuney, Alaka.

Justin ( Philadelphia PA)

What round do you think Alex Okafor will land? And who do you a the star D D, line this year?

William Wilkerson
  (4:05 PM)

Man he looked good today at Pro Day. Really impressed me. Looks fully healthy and says he is as well. I think he'll go somewhere in the second or third. starting D-line I think will be jeffcoat and Reed at DE and then Jackson and Brown at DT.

Rasean (Pensacola )

Chances myck kabongo stay

William Wilkerson
  (4:06 PM)

I don't think they are very good. Look, this team was young last year and will be more experienced next season but that doesn't always equate to more wins. This team needs an inside presence and NBA scouts want to see that Kabongo to play with a big man, which is where his game would really drive given how much he dribble-drives/dishes. I think he'd be better served in the D-league if he doesn't stick on someones roster.

Rasean (Pensacola )

How are the DBs looking

William Wilkerson
  (4:08 PM)

Solid. They are still trying to figure out where to best utilize Diggs. Duke Thomas is coming along nicely. I'd be worried about the back end though. Not necessarily Adrian Phillips because I do think he'll be OK; showed signs of better tackling late last season. But M. Thompson is a guy that really needs to take a gigantic step forward.

Rasean (Pensacola )

Next commitment for basketball

William Wilkerson
  (4:09 PM)

Kendal Yancy-Harris.

Chris (San Antonio)

Is Jordan Hicks still limited in practice, or is he fully healed from that pesky hamstring

William Wilkerson
  (4:10 PM)

Limited slightly. They are taking things slow as they should. But he is able to go through some stuff.

Zaid (Houston)

Willy,What was the consensus on VY at pro day? think he gets another shot?

William Wilkerson
  (4:11 PM)

Zaid-y, I think he'll get picked up by someone. The question is: Will he stick? Mack Brown, of course, said that he thinks he'll get another shot because he is better than a lot of people playing right now. I thought he looked sharp. He didn't have the best weapons to throw to today (Luke Poehlmann was one of his tight ends for goodness sake). But, overall, I thought he did well. We'll hear more from him on Wednesday so stayed tuned.

Rasean (Pensacola )

The starting secondary for next season

William Wilkerson
  (4:12 PM)

Diggs and Byndom at corners Phillips/Thompson at safety.

Jon (Campus)

Was there a rep. from the Texans at the Pro day today? Would love to see Kenny in a Texans uniform!

William Wilkerson
  (4:13 PM)

There sure was. I know talks are out there that they are looking at him. Not sure how that would work out given the Ed Reed signing though.

Paul (Austin )

Can you explain why Zach Rogers did not get an offer after last week watching film I think this kids has a big upside or am I missing something with him,

William Wilkerson
  (4:14 PM)

No, I think you are just in your questioning. He's good. Real good. I think the staff is just wanting to further evaluate him. They'll get plenty of opportunities given he plays on the same team as Jamal Adams. I just get the sense that Rogers ends up at Arkansas. Nothing he's said tells me that but he's going up there for a second visit very soon.

Rick Barnes (Austin, TX)

Will I ever get another signature from a top in state recruit?

William Wilkerson
  (4:14 PM)

You'd better get this team to the tournament and get past the first round first. If that doesn't happen I'm not so sure you'll be around long enough to figure that out.

Chris (San Antonio)

What is Suddes' next move?

William Wilkerson
  (4:15 PM)

He has a golden opportunity this week to pair the spring game with the Texas Relays. It's as unique a recruiting opportunity for any program in the country. He has to make that work somehow.

Kevin (Texas)

Great stuff William. How did Vince Young and the rest of the guys look at the pro day?

William Wilkerson
  (4:18 PM)

Hey Kevin, I thought, for the most part, everyone that was supposed to look good looked good. The guy that really showed out was Jeremy Hills. Coming off his broken leg, I wasn't sure how he'd fair. But he blazed his 40 time and looked good in drills with VY. KV looked solid as you'd expect. He had a hip flexor but still looked like a clear-cut first rounder.

Rasean (Pensacola )

Record prediction for football next season

William Wilkerson
  (4:18 PM)

I think this team can get to 10 wins.

Rasean (Pensacola )

Best improved player in spring

keith (iowa)

we need jeffcoat and hicks to be healthy, how are they looking?

Jeremy (Oregon)

On the first question in which you listed your staring D for the 2013 season, why do you elect to go with Edmond over Santos?

William Wilkerson
  (4:21 PM)

I think the experience that Edmond has from last season being the leader of the LB group is really helping him take strides as an overall player. I think both will play a ton. But I think Edmond showed enough last year to get the nod.

Chris (Austin)

Do you think we'll see more in-state offers go out to OL? Also, France or Spain? And for this side of the world, Mexico or USA?

William Wilkerson
  (4:22 PM)

I think more will eventually be handed out. It's still early in the grand scheme of things. Texas is in good shape right now. Many teams are still getting into spring ball. So there is a lot of time for evals to take place, and then, of course, the 2013-14 season.

Jeff (atx)

How full speed will the uptempo offense be in the Spring Game? Should we expect game-level tempo?

William Wilkerson
  (4:27 PM)

I think they'll get up and go as close to game speed as possible. Absolutely. There is no reason to hide it. Teams know they are going to do it and will get a good look against New Mexico State. Practice makes perfect, right?

karman witte (Houston, TX)

How was the Pro Day for Alex Okafor and Brandon Moore?

William Wilkerson
  (4:27 PM)

It was good for both of them. Moore looked like a beast in agility drills. Okafor looked very much like the guy who dominated in the Alamo Bowl. That game definitely made him some money.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Are the Horns poised to snatch another top recruit from the Sooner State?

William Wilkerson
  (4:30 PM)

Gonna be tough. Steven Parker seemed interested. But he's got so many schools coming after him from all over. Thing is, these safeties coming out this year are so good they want to be THE Guy wherever they go. I think Texas' top target is Jamal Adams. So if he chooses UT there is no way Parker is coming to. I think they've got a shot with him though. Not so much with Deondre Clark.

Stephen (Seattle, WA)

Do you think David Ash can finish the year with 2 receivers in the 100 receptions area? OR close too?

William Wilkerson
  (4:32 PM)

I think that is a stretch just because they'll still be a running team and there are too many weapons to spread the ball around. Shipley and Davis will both get at least 60-70 for sure.

Rasean (Pensacola )

How did kenny Vaccaro do at his pro day

William Wilkerson
  (4:32 PM)

Really good despite a hip flexor.

Jeremy (Oregon)

William, i would love to see Vaccaro slip a bit and get picked up by the cowboys!! A lot of the experts have him goign a bit before the pick but what are the chances that could happen based off of film, combine and pro day results?

William Wilkerson
  (4:33 PM)

That's the million(s) dollar question right now for the former Texas safety. I think he showed a lot today. He was the only safety working out, which can't be easy. All eyes were on him and his hip wasn't helping. Despite injury, and what he showed at combine, I just don't know if he'll last that long Jeremy. He said he'd love to play for a Lone Star State team.

Stephen (Seattle, WA)

Just for fun. Say all 3 RB's finished the year with 100 carries. Where would you put there Yards and TD's? (Gray, Brown and DJ)

William Wilkerson
  (4:35 PM)

Let's go J Gary over 900 and 10 TDs; Brown 740 and 8 TDs and Bergeron 550 and 12.

Rasean (Pensacola )

Will Rick Barnss offer kendal yancy Harris on march 28th on his official visit

William Wilkerson
  (4:35 PM)

He'd better.

Stephen (Houston)

How good does Texas feel about the 2014 DB offers? Lacking a single commit at this point is unexpected. Is it all due to the no visit policy?

William Wilkerson
  (4:37 PM)

I think they have to feel good. DB is normally a position Texas doesn't have to worry about. I think they are in good spots with Adams, Watkins, Johnson, Bonney. So we'll see. They're going to get some real good ones regardless. I think the no-visit policy has a little to do with it. But not a whole bunch. So many of these kids love the process and the attention that comes with it. They don't want that to stop so early.

Jeremy (Oregon)

The work you do is great William, feel like im still in Austin! Thank you. Now, Havnt heard much from Darrion Johnson lately.. any future plans, camps, or J-Day visits for him. Heard he was "thinking about it" when asked if he will be at the spring game.. your thoughts William.

William Wilkerson
  (4:38 PM)

Much appreciated Jeremy. It's all for you guys. I'd imagine he'll get down for the spring game. I think Texas needs to get him here and let him experience what UT is about. His offers list is growing. There's a lot to think about. Having Brown and Cole helps Texas' cause.

Andy (Frisco)

Thoughts on the o-line this upcoming season, especially the running game compared to last season. Also, do you think that Gray is getting enough touches in Spring, i am not hearing much about him compared to Brown.

William Wilkerson
  (4:40 PM)

The Cochran injury isn't good but it doesn't dampen things a whole bunch. He'll be fine for the fall. Question is: where do they all play? With Harrison coming in there are a ton of linemen with only five spots to serve. I've heard good things about Espinosa believe it or not. ... I wouldn't worry about Gray at all. He's going to be a workhorse for this team.

Stephen (Houston)

How many more 2015 offers will go out this weekend? I have to hope offers go to Soso Jamabo, Larry Pryor, Zach Rogers, & Rawleigh Williams. Anyone else you think could be in line to get an offer from 2015 class?

William Wilkerson
  (4:41 PM)

I could see two or three more going out to guys that weren't able to make it down. Jamabo, Pryor, Williams and def. guys to keep an eye on.

Dave Nelson (WYNX)

A&M now has the better traditions, band AND football team. When will we be on top of the last one again?

William Wilkerson
  (4:42 PM)

It's tough to say since the two rivals won't be playing anytime soon. It will be interesting to see how the SEC comes back at Johnny Football in his sophomore year. Batters usually have a better feel for things the second time they face a pitcher. Will that be the case for defenses against JF?

John (Copperas Cove)

How's Duke Thomas been, will he be on the field other than special teams this year?

William Wilkerson
  (4:43 PM)

I think, without question, you'll see him on the field. Possibly in some nickel and dime coverages if Diggs ends up staying put at corner. He's too good not to be on the field.

Paul (Austin )

I understand that but at this stage of the game kids want to explore and the schools that show him love will win out just hope TX starts soon ...I seen him Tweet about UCLA also from his trip there and Arkansas was his first offer I think but would be nice to keep him in TX for sure I think he the best OL at this stage and also playing 5A is good he is playing with the best of best and he still has 2 more years , Nothing against the Garza either he will be a good one also

William Wilkerson
  (4:44 PM)

^ Legit argument for Rogers.

John (Copperas Cove)

Forget getting recruits to sign, should Coach Barnes be worried about his job, considering coaches that made the tournament just got fired?

William Wilkerson
  (4:46 PM)

I don't think so even though I definitely think he should. This team, with this location/these facilities, hasn't been to Sweet 16 since 2007. That's horrible. A coach that took UCLA to two Final Fours just got the boot. All that said, I think Barnes is in good standing with Dodds.

Robert (Houston TX)

Will we see Brewer ever play at Texas?

William Wilkerson
  (4:46 PM)

Eventually, yes. I think he'll open some eyes at spring game.

mike (tyler )

been reading that edmond has been looking better i guess santos has pushed him in that direction do you think that santos has looked better than last year? and do you see him playing significant time this fall?

William Wilkerson
  (4:47 PM)

Without question. He is in much better shape this year, which is helping his game and helping him stay on the field.

Stephen (Houston)

I really hope Alaka commits to Texas. There is still a need at the position. Other than the TE (who may or may not have an offer), who does Texas get from the state of LA?

William Wilkerson
  (4:47 PM)

I think Courtney Garnett (DT) is a legit candidate. Jermaine Roberts is as well. I also wouldn't count Texas out of the Joseph Paul sweepstakes just yet. He'll be in town this weekend despite being a Florida commitment.

Jeff (atx)

When should we expect more information on the Cayleb Jones situation?

William Wilkerson
  (4:48 PM)

Think it could be a while.

Charles (Provo)

How do you think the Longhorns will fair against BYU in football next year? I see it being pretty tough to get a win in that high altitude. Plus maybe they can learn a thing or two from the cougar defense.

William Wilkerson
  (4:49 PM)

Charles, I honestly think that will be one of Texas' toughest games. It's a great game for the Longhorns early on. The Cougars are as well coached as any so Texas is going to have to have its stuff together if they want to get out of Provo with a win.

Dave Nelson (WYNX)

The Big 12 seemed to be the premier conference a few years ago...now its floundering behind the Pac12, Big10 and for sure, SEC. Think Dodds regrets not moving to the PAC 10? If not, should he?

William Wilkerson
  (4:50 PM)

His pride will never waver. They are the Joneses, remember? People keep up with him, not the other way around. I think he's fine where he is.

Ricky (Kansas)

Will how's it going man? I know the Horns hoop squad was young this season but they are 5,4,3 star guys all across the roster. So how come a team like my Alma Mater, the Shockers with a few 3 star guys are in the sweet 16 but the Horns can't win a game in the CBI?

William Wilkerson
  (4:52 PM)

Rick Barnes has been searching for this answer for a while now. To be fair, he didn't know this stuff with Kabongo was going to happen. That was a brutal break for this club. But he's had talent in the past and didn't do anything with it, or at least as much as you'd think other coaches would. IDK Ricky. This will be one of the few times in his career at UT where he'll have virtually the same team for three-four straight seasons. We'll see what he can do with it. I don't see this team being a whole lot better next year.

Stephen (Houston)

What sort of role do you see Gresham playing? He is listed as a FB... don't see too many of those anymore. His offer list is quite impressive. Would it be more accurate to just label him a RB?

William Wilkerson
  (4:53 PM)

That's what he'd tell you. He hates being called a FB. He says he's a RB. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Andy? (Frisco)

Who do you see as at least an early prediction for the final or final two wr that Texas will take in 2014?

William Wilkerson
  (4:54 PM)

I have a strange feeling Armanti Foreman will end up at Texas.

Pist Hoffman (beaumont)

how can I watch the orange and white game if no one in my area carries Longhorn network? Is there any way? a replay?

William Wilkerson
  (4:55 PM)

I know we'll likely have highlights on HornsNation.com after it is over. Best of luck.

Chris (San Antonio)

If VY does get picked up by a team, who do you think it will be?

William Wilkerson
  (4:55 PM)

Houston?

Chris (San Antonio)

I visit the aggie blog from time to time, because they look at most of the same recruits as we do. I've read now two times that they think Jarrett Johnson will be their next commit. Who do you think Johnson will commit to?

William Wilkerson
  (4:56 PM)

Yeah, I could see that happening. I honestly think it's 50/50 right now. I'll lean Aggies right now though. But that can definitely change.

KingOfRidiculous (The Chair)

Is it time for us to knowledge that A&M has and will pass us up in football. Let's be honest the SEC is College Football. Is it time to answer the UPS question what can brown do for you. By the way I hate little sophomores getting all this attention. It's bad enough my generation has a sense of entitlement. What says you sir?

William Wilkerson
  (4:59 PM)

One successful season doesn't wash away what came from a 100-plus year rivalry. However, I do think that Texas A&M is in a very, very, very good position right now. Thing to watch with the Aggies is, what happens if this success continues and the NFL comes calling for Sumlin? Will they be able to sustain this run? I think A

Chris (San Antonio)

Who do you think has more pro potential, JGray, or Malcolm Brown

William Wilkerson
  (5:00 PM)

Eh, Gray. He's better out of the backfield.

Jeremy (Oregon)

A guy i belive flying under the radar is Walter miller from my old HS Frisco Heritage High School. He recently won MVP at a dallas combine and i dont belive he has any offers at this point. I played with the kid and he has a work ethic and motor like no one else. Have the texas coaches reached out to him or do you think they will in the future?

William Wilkerson
  (5:01 PM)

I'm not aware that Texas has looked his way. But there is a lot of time left in this recruiting cycle. Things can change. He plays in a very populated area where coaches frequent.

Stephen (Houston)

In your opinion, what DEs will Texas end up with in the 2014 class?

William Wilkerson
  (5:02 PM)

Oh boy, uh, I'll go out on a limb and say Solly Thomas, Derick Roberson, Sione and jake Mc. That's a stretch, but you asked.

Rasean (Pensacola)

Texas basketball starting lineup if they get Kendal Yancy Harris

William Wilkerson
  (5:04 PM)

PG: FelixSG: Juice LewisF: PapiPF: HolmesC: Ridley

Stephen (Houston)

If Barnes misses the NCAA Tourney next season, will he be fired?

William Wilkerson
  (5:04 PM)

That or resign, yes.

William Wilkerson
  (5:05 PM)

Alright everyone, that'll do it for this week's HornsNation chat. Thanks for all of you who participated. We'll be at it again next week. be sure to keep it locked on HornsNation.com this weekend for all your spring game coverage needs.
