Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Let's get rolling.

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

Hey Bill, Say Johnson and the other two LTs are gone. Do the Chargers look at Watson of FSU? He has as much upside as any LT in this draft and a great work ethic.

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Probably not at 11. Too many other needs and too many other good players out there.

Derek (Lawrence, KS)

Does KC bring in another RB to pair with Charles?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Yeah, but they also liek Gray.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

It's a wait-and-see. Got to see how he plays, I think. We saw this year that the RB market wass't strong so I don't think Oakland should overpay him before seeing if he can stay healthy. The Raiders will have cap room, so they will be able to sign him after the season.

benw32 (Off-season doldrums)

BW, many people have been saying Denver/Baltimore are kicking off the regular season but I've heard Denver will host the late MNF game. Any insight?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

The team thinks it may play on MNF. But Thursday is in play.

Michael Murphy (Thornton, CO)

Denver needs O-line depth out of this draft. A prospect I love who is quietly falling and can play all three positions is Barrett Jones. Can you set the rumor out or get into Denver?s ear about this guy please?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

I think a lot of teams like that kid. Looks a long-term starter.

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Sorry got a phone call from a team. had to take it.

Derek (Lawrence, KS)

With Palmer possibly out of Oakland and Geno Smith on the radar, does that give KC any leverage on trading out of 1st pick with other teams wanting Geno Smith?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

If a team really wnats Smith and is worried Oakkland will take him, then a trade with KC will be in play.

Ryan McMaster (Sicklerville, NJ)

Hey Bill, Basing this off of what you know, who is your gut instict to start at QB for Oakland in 2013? Palmer, Pryor, Flynn, Young, or Smith?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

First, I think we have to see how the Palmer deal shakes out. This latest report of him not wanting $10 million from Okalnd, may not be how things play out. I don't get the sense, as of this moment, that the Raiders are done with Palmer yet. And that's on good authoriy.

Michael Murphy (Thornton, CO)

1.Bill, a lot of mock drafts have Denver taking a cornerback in the 1st round. With Elway and Fox preaching about Omar and the recent signing of DRC, they look set on the outside & slot at the cornerback position in my opinion. With that said do they reach for a running back or look for an edge rusher in the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

I think RB, pass-rusher, MLB and CB are all in play. CB is nto all that urgent at the momment.

benw32 (A Glass Cage Of Emotion)

Being that the Broncos are in "win now" mode, do you think they trade down in the draft to get a player they really like?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

Do you mean trade up?I think everything is on the table. I can see a move form 28 to 20 or so.

Nick (Florida)

the Chargers still need a power back. Beanie wells would be the ideal fit, young, good ability but has had injury trouble which could mean he would be cheap. Why hasn't telesco even contacted his agent?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

He's not a guy who rush otu for him. He'll be there if they want him.

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

Do you see the Chargers letting Butler test FA?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

I bet they re-sign him. He's a guy you him.

Jacob (Kansas City)

Bill is there similarities between Jared Gaither and Branden Albert? Both good tackles, but Branden missed a couple games last year and the year before with back injuries. Is that something to be concerned about?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

No. A lot of guys miss a game here and there. Gaither made an art form of it.It would be very unfair to point Albert of doing that.

Esco (Seattle, WA)

Do you think the Raiders have a greater need at DT or CB? Do you see them trading down in the draft to pick up a draft pick in the second round?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

CB. They don't have any.

Nick (Florida)

if all of the top O-line prospects are gone when SD picks, who do you think they would go for? My thoughts would be if Starr is available him or possibly Jordan.

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

Bets available at that point. Star would be great if he is there.

Robert (Los Angeles)

Any chance Oakland lands sheriff floyd and tyrann mathieu in draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

Floyd is a possibility and Matheiu is just a mid-round guy.I knwo the fans of the team that gets him are going to be all exicted because he's ... "HONEY BADGER."Truth is, he is a guy with off-field problems who missed last season and he has coverage questions. Maybe he will be a star, but if teams felt great about him he'd be a first-round talent.Remember, games over names.

Tim (Bryce Canyon Utah)

Hey Bill, What are your "sources" telling you about a Brandon Albert trade?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Miami is the only tema that, right now, may be a fit. Could take some time. Chiefs would love a second and a seventh. I wouldn't be surprised if they settled for a second.

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

Do you have a gut feeling about Winston to the Chargers potentially?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

They are hanging around, yes. Eagles like him, too.

Alex (KC)

with all the move the chiefs have made is there anything left for them to do via free agency or trades or is it a waiting game till the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

Didn't they do enough? They don't have much cap room after all of thsoe scores. It's the draft for the Chiefs.

benw32 (TommyTown)

Any chance the Broncos offer a small time/small pay deal to Tommy Kelly?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Yeah, maybe, but they have Vickerson and Knighton and other areas to add to. If he was relaly cheap, maybe. But he could get a better offer elsewhere.

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

The Chargers need as much offensive help as they can get. Could you foresee them going against conventional wisdom and taking Austin or Patterson at 11? Patterson in particular would be an interesting replacement for Jackson.

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Austin and Patterson would be great there, but I think they would be backup plans to the backup plan if all the LTs were gone. Maybe they could be an option if the Chargers traded down to the 16-20 range.

dee (Bahamas) [via mobile]

what are the plans @ tight end for my Raiders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Heck of a question. Need someone. Ausberry and Gordon are unproven.

Von Miller (Denver, CO)

Over on under - 15+ sacks next season for me now that I don't have Dum to help?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Over. You'll be fine.

Ross (NY)

Do you see Center as a need for the Broncos?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

Probably Walton.

you the man Bill (Wichita)

The biggest sleeper in the draft in your opinion is who

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

It's early, but check out the RB from Stony Brook, Miquel Mayonset. Bene comapred t oRay Rice.

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

What's your feeling on Green's impact potential at TE for the Chargers next year and beyond? Is the dude somebody to watch?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I think so. Big potential. I like him.

jd (kc)

Do you see sd trading up for a LT?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

The need is great, but the Chargers have other needs. I think thye'd rather trade back than trade up.

Nick (Denver)

Mike Klis reported that the Broncos and Freeney are far apart in contract talks. Any insight into how far apart? Think they have a shot at Margus Hunt? And would he fit in well?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Yeah, it looks like Dnever may wait until the draft. Hunt is a possibility yes. Maybe in second round.

Nick Shoemaker (Cincinnati, OH)

Cincinnatian who dies for Orange Crush, we are in need of quite a few things, including but not limited to, OL, DB, RB, where do you rank the importance of these needs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Pass-rusher, RN< MLB, CB.

Kurt (Sacramento, CA)

I think the Raiders will have a top ten offense and win the AFC West, why am I wrong?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Um, Well, um. Folks,a littlle help for our brother here?

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

The Chargers done adding RBs or do you see a flyer in the late rounds of the draft? I like the Woodhead fit.

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

Woodhead will help for sure. But I see someone being added in some form.

Cody (Arvada, CO)

Since Elvis has left the building why not start Robert Ayers

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

That may be the way they go. He is a good run stuffer. As long as they have a solid third-down rusher who cnan come in.

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

Jarvis Jones is falling due to a 4.9 and health issues. He's dynamic. I'd think if his back checks out and top LTs are off the board the Chargers should be interested. What say you? Former Bolt Phillips also ran a poor 40 coming out but he turned out just fine.

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

I agree but there all the questions will force him down past No. 11, i think. The Chargers have other needs. They are high on Melvin Ingram as a pass rusher.

Rocco Stramaglia (Reading, Pa)

Bill, what are your thoughts of KC selecting Chance Warmack at #1 if they cannot trade back?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

I think thye'd go tackle first.

alex (kc)

is smith the answer or just a bridge qb till a franchise qb comes through the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Well, i think he is a good bridge quarterback. SMith is the answer for teh enxt 2-3 year.

Michael Murphy (Thornton, CO)

Any chance Denver makes a play for Brian Urlacher? If Keith Brooking (37) found playing time last year, Urlacher (34) would be an absolute upgrade for the Denver Bronco?s Defense both physically and mentally.

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

That would likely be soemthing Denver looks at down the road.

dee (Bahamas) [via mobile]

should the raiders try an pick up lattimore in the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Sure, but I think every team will look at him as a value pick in the mid rounds.

Erik (Tijuana Mexico)

What about Mallett? He is worth trading for and probably better than any other of the quarterbacks supposedly in play for Oakland.

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

The word is the Patritos want a ton for him. First or second.

Bob (Oakland)

Tracey Porter is supposedly visiting with Oakland as I type. Do you think Oakland locks him up before he leaves and if so, what do you think of that signing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

Yes, he is visiting. New Orleans likes him, too. He's start in Oakland. He's be fine, not great.

Michael Strahan JR. (Germany)

Talk to me, would you say Hali is still elite? or is he not worth the $$$

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Still, very strong yes.

Michael Murphy (Thornton, CO)

In reguards to the Broncos trading up in your previous post. I don't see them moving up with only 6 draft picks in the draft. I can see them moving back to stock pile picks. Could target a running back. What back would you have Denver selecting if all running backs are on the board?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

Like I said, everything is on the table. The team is built to win now, so if I think they can get an insant impact player at 20 that they can't get at 28, they'd think about it. They have needs but few glaring holes.

Mikey (Hawaii)

Do you see Cooper and Warmack getting drafted before 20?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

On paper, yes. But remember, once the draft starts, guards seem to be secondary. David DeCastro was considered a superstar last year and he fell past 20.

Jonathan (San Diego)

Many mocks have the Chargers going LT with #11 - if the top 3 are gone, do you see them targeting OG, best player or trading down? Any starting LT in the 2nd round?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

Yes, Warmack or Cooper would be in the mix in that scenario.

Steve (Baton Rouge, LA)

If you had choose one to build a team around, who would it be Geno Smith or Tim Tebow?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

Smith. We klnow the answer on Tebow.

nick (leb, mo)

whats the best case scenario for chiefs on draft day?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

They have the No. 1 pick. They determine the best-case scenario.

Jay (RI)

If Lane Johnson isn't there when we pick, dont you think our best option is to trade down and get more picks. We do have alot of holes to fill.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

It's definitely be a strong option, yes.

Nick (Florida)

Should SD fans put much faith into Troutman impressing coaches enough to have him start at Guard opposite Rinehart?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

That's the thing about the Chargers' OL. They have a bunch of youngsters who may turn out nice. Troutman, Mok, Harris.

Anthony (Toronto)

Do you think the Chiefs will get back that 2 rounder they lost for Smith?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

the Albert trade would do it.

Andrew (Pasadena)

What is the chance the Broncos draft Trufant and move Champ to Safety? If not who are they taking at 28?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Champ is staying at CB this year, but Trufnat could be the choice if other options aren't there.

Chris (CA) [via mobile]

Hey Bill, is Porter and Newman gonna decide where they wanna play any time soon. Do you think the Raiders sign at least one of them?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

They want to. Mike Jenkins is in the mix, too.

Robert (Bloomington, IN) [via mobile]

Did you read Kevin Acee's column on Gaither release? Absolutely scathing. And correct indeed.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Yeah. Players don't like seeing other players tank it.

Nick (Florida)

What is SD's biggest need besides Secondary and O-line in your opinion?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Receiver.

Jamie (San Jose, CA)

Doesn't seem like there's much interest in Jammer and Philips. Any chance either one, or both, come back? Also, with the cutting of Gaither with a June 1 designation, does that mean the Bolts pick up some cap space this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Yeah, I can see them maybe coming back if the market stays dry for them.

Tomlinson (Monroe,iowa)

If that Noterdame TE is there this would be the year to take him at 11 for Chargers...what do you think? Gates is getting older..

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

That's too early.

Chris (North Carolina)

How much risk is it worth taking on drafting Lattimore? Seems to me that, especially in this draft, he's worth taking a shot at in Round 5+, whereas other years he might go undrafted.

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

It will be very well worth it in the fifth round.

emoney (ATL)

Who will be "Mr. Irrelevant" this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

I need to figure out the first pick before the last pick.

Mark (Toronto)

Chances Tracy Porter signs in Oakland?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Pretty strong.

Dave (Aurora)

Any chance of the Broncos picking up James Harrison?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

He's a 3-4 guy.

Bob (Oakland)

If Joekel and Floyd were still on the board when Oakland picked, who do you think they would take? I realize most are suggesting Floyd, but flipping Veldeer to RT with Wiz, Jr. in the middle would create the foundation for a great OL.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Joeckel may be more highly rated, but Floyd would make a greater impact as far as need.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour, folks. Talk to you next week.
