Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! Welcome back to all who have been before and welcome to all who are making their debut. So apparently a bunch of feathers have been ruffled with the new Nike ad on Twitter and Facebook, "Winning Fixes Everything." I wanna hear from YOU... did the ad offend you? Why? BRING IT!!!

Dan (CA)

How is the Tiger ad controversial in any way? He was asked about getting the #1 ranking back, and his response was something along the lines of "winning takes care of that". Now people are twisting that as if it pertains to his personal life?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

This is a post that went up following my question on Twitter from @graykeller: "Does Nike really think winning will make people forget Tiger Woods slept with over a dozen of the ugliest women on earth #JustDoIt"

Demetri Martin (NYC)

Some men are born great. Others have greatness thrust upon them.* *Also true when you replace "great" with "bald."

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Bald heads rejoice! Hey, ho, hey, ho!

Lester (Barbados)

What are the chances that the cut line moves to -2

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

Slim... more likely the cut will move to E.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What major do you think that Tiger Woods will win this season?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

I'm pretty confident in him winning the US Open. If he has the lead at Augusta on Sunday of the Masters, he'll win there too.

Mike (Houston)

Heck...winning generally fixes everything in your golf and personal life. Rory still struggling today but likely to make the cut on the number. We've had odd Master's winners from out of nowhere in the past, but it can't be likely that he "fixes" his game this weekend and over a few rounds of practice in Augusta.

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

Totally agree which is why I said after Match play that Rory needed to add an event to his schedule. Even though San Antonio is totally off base to prepare for Augusta, the last thing Rory needs is another week off.

Shoshana (Boston)

OF COURSE Nike framed the message deliberately to create a stir! Look at the response: everyone is talking about it. Marketing 101. My question is -- did Tiger sign off on it? I'd think he would hesitate to bring up the scandal just as everyone was beginning to move on.

Luke (Vietnam)

Do you still think Rory can win in Houston?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

It's gonna take back to back 65's, not unheard of but he's behind the 8 ball now.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

As to the first comment from Shoshana... Only people looking for scandal read that from the add. I asked my boss, "If Rory wins this week and Nike runs the add next week with Rory's picture because he'd be number 1, is anyone offended? Because his game fell off too." He said no.

Dan (CA)

Have you partaken in the #dufnering craze yet?

Patrick (Philly, PA)

Dufnering: better than the Golf Boys?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

That video should be posted shortly! Better than the Golf Boys? No. Awesome and hilarious that it is getting so much traction. OH YEAH!

Nick (Canada)

Back to back missed cuts by Snedeker. Does it look like the first major of the year is going to be a wash for him?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

I'm not feeling real good for him right now. When you're playing the way he was, it's cruise control. Now trying to grind it to get back is all but impossible. But it is SO hard to just "let it happen".

Shoshana (Boston)

Michael, you're missing the point. Rory didn't have a major "off-field" scandal that captivated the country and almost ruined him professionally and personally. Obviously Nike knew what they were doing. I personally don't care because in this country, the sad truth is winning does take care of everything. Take a look at Kobe, LeBron, now Tiger...

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

I'm not. Winning didn't get him Lindsay as a girlfriend and it didn't get his ex her new boyfriend (who by the way is richer than Tiger AND had a bigger boat). So if he didn't win on the golf course he's still "winning" in life and would have been anyway. Did the ad run when they got into happy relationships? NO, so the only people reading into this what they want are the people looking for a reason to be mad.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Sneds with another MC (aka "Michael Collins"). Any advice for him?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

The hardest thing in golf to do... stop trying so hard to get back to where you were. And now with the added pressure of Augusta, I'm gonna have a tough time putting him in my top ten.

Nick (Canada)

Hey Shoshana, the only thing I question about your great point is what exactly did Lebron do that was so horrible. The only thing he did was act like an idiot when it came to leaving Cleveland.

Chris (Boston)

Besides Tiger, who was the last player to win four tournaments in one year?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

McIlroy won four last year.

Bob (Seattle)

What should I use to recover from the sunburn I got while playing golf at Bandon?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

Nothing. Everyone else is hating on you for getting to play Bandon so the least you can do is suffer for a bit on our behalf! j/kTry cocoa butter with shea butter mixed in, Target has a great mix of it. And stay inside for a while.

Nick (Canada)

Is Mickelson starting to tinker to much with the putter. Almost feel like he is starting to get the "yips."

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Or he's worried he might get them and is taking preventative measures to make sure, only if that's the case it'll backfire.

Josh (San Francisco)

Michael...what do you have against Tiger Woods. You seem to be making so many back handed comments about him recently, such as, "nothing impressed me about Tiger" at Arnold Palmer Invit. On a separate note, it's somewhat a joke that you guaranteed a Rory victory this week.

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

Oh Josh... dude the opposite is true. Nothing Tiger did impresses me anymore because everything he does when he's winning is good to great. Two things you should know though, when he's bad my pointing it out is not hating. And when he's good, I don't make it more than it is. For that reason, I get both, "You're a Tiger lover!" and "You're a Tiger hater." in equal parts.Look at Rory's last 27 holes coming into this week. Is it THAT far fetched?

@surrwadd (twitter)

MC, it's all about perception. Nike has been at this game for a while now and they know the Golden Rule: any publicity is good publicity!

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

Amen.

Tom (Verona, WI)

How big is your boat?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

I have two. One made by Hotwheels and one made by Matchbox. My kids play with both of 'em when it's bath time!

Tom (Verona, WI)

68 for Steve Stricker today. Smart move to play less. Maybe he can give scheduling tips when he's not giving putting tips.

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

He said he's getting ALOT more guys coming over to him on the putting green now. Probably why he shot 73 in the first round.

Nick (Canada)

Now that we know Rory is just sneaking into the cut are you still confident in your pick of Rory winning the Masters?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

Not at all!!! Especially after he says he was tenative with some of his shots during round one. I really wish he would have played the Arnold Palmer Invitational

Josh (San Francisco)

Hey MC...great answer to my question. Just want you to know that I love following your columns/videos. You bring some much needed energy to the game of golf.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

No man, thank you. If people like you didn't like what I brought to the table I would have been gone real quick.

@surrwadd (twitter)

Also, everybody making videos needs to thank Ben Crane. His workout videos are some of the best entertainment on youtube.

@surrwadd (twitter)

Original Golf Boys video was the best. I liked the fact that it looked like they put the whole thing together in about an hour.

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

NO WAY!! The new Golf Boys video is much better.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Hey Michael, do you know what Mike Weir has been up to lately?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

9 starts this year with only two cuts made and a W/D last week at the Arnold Palmer. He's only made $27, 384 this year. He tried for so long to play hurt, messed up his game bad.

Eric T (Ann Arbor, MI)

The ad says "Tiger Woods, World #1" under the "Winning..." quote. This "controversy" is simply self-righteous people who will never forgive Tiger for not being PERFECT in all parts of his life. Haters are going to hate. The man made a HUGE mistake, he cheated on his wife, got caught, got exposed as a d-bag, got divorced, lost millions of money and fans, suffered physically and mentally on the golf course, and is now getting his life back in order. Elin forgave him. He is very involved with parenting his kids. Tiger didn't beat anyone, rape anyone, or do anything illegal. Tiger and Nike are celebrating one part of his comeback in GOLF, just chill out or shut the heck up!

Shoshana (Boston)

"Winning Takes Care of Everything" refers to both the #1 ranking (Tiger's words) as well as the public's opinion of the man (the double meaning Nike advertising execs clearly intended, and look, it worked!). It is not referring to specific moments in his or his ex wife's personal life. No idea where you came up with that theory, Michael. To Nick in Canada -- LeBron didn't do anything terribly bad per se, but he did irritate the majority of NBA fans with this handling of "The Decision" and was quite clearly one of the most despised athletes just 1-2 years ago. Very different from Kobe and Tiger's extra-marital issues but the main point is "Winning Takes Care of Everything" is a referendum on the American sports watching public. We love winners and we move on from the "other" stuff...but ONLY IF they start winning again.

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

And there are both sides of the argument. The only problem I have is the part from people saying the ad also refers to public opinion. If that's the case, where in the ad is that reference? Is there a picture of him off the course doing something? And if there isn't, then you have to take responsibility for making it mean something else to YOU. And no one wants to do that.

Zach (Chicago)

Any chance I would be able to play around at Augusta following the Masters? Maybe play with Rory or Phil, I guess Tiger could come along too. How much pull do you have? Hook me up!

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

You want me to get you on Augusta BEFORE I've gotten to play it? Did you steal Vijay's spray?! C'MON MAN!

@surrwadd (twitter)

how many years is Tony Romo gonna get on his extension?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

I'm hoping ten years guaranteed, because I'm an Eagles fan and I know you'll never win a Super Bowl with him as your QB! haha

Tom (LA)

Hey Bob (Seattle), I just played Bandon this week as well. I didn't get sunburned, but I'm kinda tired. I did have to wear shades cause of all the Oregon sun we got.

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

You guys are lucky I can't block you here!! ;) j/k

Eric T (Ann Arbor, MI)

There's an element of schadenfreude involved in all the focus on Tiger's, and now Rory's troubles on the golf course. This is so crazy to me because we are awed by the exploits of our athletic heroes, and yet some of us snicker when they fail. And, we criticize the stars for EVERY transgression no matter how small, while others get a pass or even ignored.

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

NO ONE gets a pass. But many get ignored. And the reason is we WANT them to be infallible and when they're not, we feel hurt on some level as well. And WHY did you have to use "schadenfreude"?! You know I had to go look that up! Did you not read my bio?! LOL

Tom (Verona, WI)

Do players practice hitting out of divots? Would they like a rule change so they could get a free drop from a fairway divot? From a fan's point of view it seems so random.

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

That's one rule I haven't heard a golfer say should stay as is. I hit the ball where I'm supposed to and I'm penalized for it? Ridiculous.

Josh (Maryland)

Hey MC,I'll be going to the Masters for the first time Thursday/Friday. Give me one thing I have to do while on the grounds and one thing I need to do while off the grounds

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Find a way on to the balcony and have the peach cobbler with ice cream. Then skip the pimento cheese and have an egg salad sandwich. Off the course I got nothing for ya yet because last year I left the course so late I never had time to go anywhere.

MOBSKII (FL)

your thoughts about Lefty possible missing the cut today?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

for me it doesn't mean anything as far as him going to Augusta. He was playing horribly in the past and won there... the year he hit the miracle shot from behind the tree at the 13th.

Mike (Houston)

Was at the Master for a Wed-Fri a couple of years ago. One thing you must do on the grounds is wear comfortable stuff and comfy shoes. You are going to walk a lot, if for not other reason than to want to see as much of that beautiful green slice of heaven as possible. Off the course, don't try to go out to eat in the evening.

Josh (Maryland)

In regards to Tom's question about divots, wouldn't it make sense that a divot is considered ground under repair? At the very least let the player take a free drop without cleaning their ball

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

It just goes too fast y'all!! Not to worry though. Same time same channel, MONDAY!!If you really need me before then...@ESPNCaddie on TwitterESPNCaddie@gmail.com is my email.Have a great weekend everyone. Play well!MC
