Well this could be a big night. Omar the barber is in the house, and the cameras are ready to roll if the Mavericks can beat the Pacers so those beards can be shaven. I'm getting a lot of vibe that folks outside the locker room believe that this is a fait accomplit. Can't be when you're facing a team that's number one in the NBA in EVERY major defensive category. Mavs offense has been humming, but this is going to be a huge challenge. Anyway, on to your questions

steve (texas)

i guess time to finally celebrate coop another lakers hurt that makes all five of their starters have miss games this year and the mavs will finally make the playoffs yes or no..

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:01 PM)

Just like two weeks ago, Steve, answer is the same. Laker injuries give the Mavericks a better chance to win. Statement of fact. No joy. I like watching talented players play.

randy (kansas)

guess it meant to be for mavs to make playoffs with all lakers injuries steve nash miss 24 games howard miss 6 gasol miss 33 blake miss 37 bryant miss 2 now mwp done for season have you ever seen something like this in all your years around the nba

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:03 PM)

Man, I thought this was supposed to be a chat about the Mavs. Although since they play the Lakers Tuesday night and are trying to catch them I guess its OK.Anyway, within those numbers, Only two really matter. Howard missed six games. Kobe missed only two, Everyone else, with all due respect, can be played around. Had Kobe and Dwight missed more games it would mean more.

Vinnie (Oakland)

I'm a Warriors fan, but what do you think of the no call against Ron Artest a few weeks ago and the corresponding 4 point loss for the Mavs. I personally love the way they are playing, kind of like an old man Y team that plays smart and executes. How do you feel the game against the Lakers will be officiated on Tues, is Kobe going to get more FT than the whole Dallas team combined like against the W's?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:07 PM)

Wow ANOTHER question about the Lakers. Look, Mavs didn't lose because of a no call on Artest. They lost because Kpbe was out of his mind great (which he can be). Nothing more. Nothing less than that. And as for Tuesday night: Look, Free throws will always be a factor in a Lakers-Mavs game. Lakers shoot the 2nd most FT in NBA. Mavs allow the 2nd most (ahead of Toronto). Have to find a way to play without fouling

Dirk went off the other night or a huge game against a top 4 seed, willing the mavs to a desperately needed win, is this a dirk we can expect to see more of? We have all seen him turn it on during the late stages and playoffs but could we see this more often now since knee surgery and say a full years recovery/workouts?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:11 PM)

This is what Dirk has been. Pay attention people. Dirk has been playing at a ridiculous clip post All Star break, and otherworldly over the last week or so. Over the last 6 games. Dirk is averaging 22.2 pts. Shooting 63.8 FG and 46.2 3 pt. making 62-65 FT. Since 1985, Only Larry Bird in 1985, Mark Price in 1989 and Detlef Schrempf in 1995 have ever had a six game stretch in which they have shot 60-50-95 over a six game span.

KB MFFL ( Lamars old W hotel room)

Coop at thebeginning of the season Rick said they would use oj at the point some. Now i know he hasnt always made the best decisions but we still never saw him consistently bring the ball up the floor and set up the offense was this due to ricks lack of trust in oj or just something that never happened just because?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:13 PM)

Ball in his hands too much leads to too many turnovers. Ball in his hands as a result of the ball being moved has been much better for him, and has allowed him to cut down his turnovers. In March, he has 67 assists to 20 turnovers, a ratio of 3.35 which is exceptional

Shawn Jacob (Carrollton, TX)

Any updates on the injuries of O.J. Mayo (shoulder) and Vince Carter (hand) that they suffered from the game against the Clippers?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:14 PM)

No updates. Carter has been playing with a bad right thumb for awhile and it got smacked by DeAndre Jordan the other night. Just playing through it.

Tyler (Dallas)

Is it as simple as Tuesday's winner of Dal @ LAL claims the 8th seed?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:15 PM)

Utah is very much in the mix here. They still have six of their last ten at home where they are far better than they are on the road. And if this winds up as a three way tiebreaker, Utah wins because of better head to head record vs Mavs and Lakers.

James (Jersey)

In your unbiased opinion, will the Mavs "SCALE THE MOUNTAIN, PLANT THEIR FLAG" and get the 8 seed?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:16 PM)

Still think they're going to fall short, but if they reel off three more wins in a row culminating with a win in LA on Tuesday night, I might be forced to change my mind

Harry Keer (Krum)

Please tell me it was just speculation that the Mavs were interested in Brandon Jennings at the trade deadline. He'll be available this summer, but he's a shoot first point guard that wouldn't fit in, and has been benched multiple times by the Bucks.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:18 PM)

Mindless speculation is all it was. Jennings made it clear he'd love to come here, but the Mavs after seeing him up close for two games would have to be crazy to want to pay him the eight figure salary he's seeking. Undersized chuckers, in my view, are never desirable.

jason (new london tx)

reguardless if the mavs miss the playoffs will mark and donnie make any positive moves this season (trades for talent and not cap space) if they miss out on free agency?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:19 PM)

I would think they will spend some money this off season. Remember they have Dirk and Marion coming off the books next season, that's $31 million. They can afford to take some back now. Might even do it this summer if they decide to deal Marion.

todd (rusk county tx)

if the mavs miss out on free agency will they be willing to take back contracts that no one wants, if talent comes with it?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:20 PM)

Tell me your definition of talent, and I'd have a better idea of whether or not they'd do it

parker (new london tx)

are the mavs destined for another poor season for 2013-2014 because mark will continue to hang his hat on capspace or will he actually make his first effort to compete since the championship?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:23 PM)

The key to any Mavs success is Dirk. I think it's pretty clear here that if Dirk was around for most of this season instead of missing the first 27 games, The Mavs would have a significantly better record, and would be safely in the playoff bracket. So as long as the Mavs find a way to bring in decent complementary pieces, they will always be competitive. There isn't a player in free agency outside of Dwight and CP3 that is worth breaking the bank for, and even if the Mavs decide they want to do that, they're still underdogs to the Lakers and Clippers because they can't offer the same amount of $$

Eric (LA)

Will Kaman be inserted back into the line up?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:24 PM)

Might need him tonight if Hibbert decides he's going to be a beast. And he's been a beast lately. 17-10 in his last 7. Season high 28 last night in Houston. Mavs have to be able to slow him down

Ray (Lewisville)

The Mavs have been terrible at the end of almost all of their close games. What did they see that gave them success against the Clippers. Was it Dirk just being outstanding or something more to it? If Dirk played like that earlier on (or got the ball more in crunch time), their close game record may be flipped.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:27 PM)

Dirk was great. Mayo hit some clutch shots. But it was their defense that got it done in OT. Clippers missed eight straight shots before Griffin's meaningless basket

Nathan [via mobile]

How much of the success since Mike James took over point should realistically be attributed directly to him, tho he has had big games I feel it's as much this team finally figuring things out and playing as just that, a team.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:28 PM)

Probably some of both, although James shooting has really helped space the floor more. I think he's giving them what they thought Anthony Morrow might give them when they made the deal with the Hawks.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (3:30 PM)

We'll wrap it here. Thanks for the great questions. Hope you'll join us tonight (Understanding you'll have some Sweet 16 action on your mind as well) Mavs have to be ready to bang with the Pacers, and if they bang well enough, there could be one interesting team photo to be taken. 7:30 tip
