We'll get rolling in a sec. Keep sending in those questions.
Jake, do you think that a Bell winning the starting job - or, even more so, one of the underclassmen - could spark quarterback transfers and/or act as a deterrent to incoming quarterbacks such as Hansen?
Always like to get the ball rolling with a half-glass empty question... Anywhere (A&M, too) Hansen goes he's going to face competition. Even if Knight won the job, Hansen could come in, redshirt, and still have two years. And if someone does transfer, it won't be the end of the world... Drew Allen is transferring, and I think OU will survive next season. That's why you add a QB to every class.
OU women have a chance to win the big 12 next year?
Honestly don't know. Griner is gone. So at least there's a chance.
How impressed were you with the Lady Sooners this season?
jake based on reports from various people and fansites it appears the defense is worrisome as the offense sounds like they are shredding them. My question is what gives? They were headed to a 3-4 and now they aren't. They are playing a "knockem back style" according to Grissom. Sounds to me like they ate as confused as the players.
Well, I can tell you that the defense did in fact get shredded on Friday during a major scrimmage. I don't know why anyone would be expecting anything else. I mean, the defense got shredded last season, too. And it lost several of its best players. Not saying the defense can't swim out of mediocrity by the start of next season, and even be great down the line, too... but there's a long way to go for that to happen.
what do you think of M'Baye going pro
Surprising, but he wants to take care of his family. Can't blame him for that, though he'll probably be taking care of them playing in Europe.
If Bell wins the starting job, who do you think will be the back up? Knight or Thompson?
My money would be on Knight, but Thompson has come a long way in the last year.
What position are we in for KD Cannon
Cannon is being recruited by everyone, but OU seems to be in good a shape as anyone else.
We all know what Shepard and Saunders can do, and we have heard about Bester and Neal during this offseason. But what happened to Trey and some of the other wideouts? Especially the young guys we have.
I'm still bullish on Metoyer. The talent is there. Sometimes it takes a little longer for the switch to flip. But once it does, Metoyer is going to be a very good WR in this league.
Jake, any word on how the SS position is going? Heard positives about corner and FS but not much on SS.
They have Quentin Hayes working back there, who would have been the third safety last year had he not been suspended for the entire year during the offseason. The guy who is starting to generate some buzz at SS is Ahmad Thomas. He can hit, and has impressed the defensive staff with his maturity in picking up the system.
OU mens basketball get back to the tourny next year?
I think so, but the chance is there for the Sooners to take a step back. Osby was such a big part of this team, as evidenced by the first-round tourney loss when no one did anything except Osby. The three frosh really have to elevate their games for OU to take a step forward instead.
Jake, how do you see the starting linebacking core shaping up?
Right now, it's Frank Shannon in the middle, Corey Nelson at weakside, and Aaron Franklin backing up both. Franklin played weakside last year, and is working in the middle this spring, so that he can come in at either position. Eric Striker is a little behind the three, but he might be able to help out down the line.
Which would u rather date Alicia Keys or Rihanna
Six losses in the last two years. Are more pay raises for the assistant coaches justified?
Well, let's discount what the new coaches are making, because they had to pay that to get them, especially Jerry Montgomery. Most of the raises weren't crazy. But Josh Heupel going up to $550K with a 3-year deal is definitely interesting. Guessing when Louisiana Tech called, Heupel told OU he needed more cash to stay -- and OU ponied up.
Best TV show going right now is________
I'm catching up on The Walking Dead (just started season 3) and really enjoying it (please don't tell me what happened in the season finale last night!!)
What chance does SoonerDave25 have to get on the field, should he try to switch to Defense, LB maybe?
On our forum, someone brought up the comparison of Chris Brown, and I think it fits. Now, Brown was a fabulous back by his senior year, and that's not what I'm saying. But Brown was completely overlooked, and when he got his chance, he produced. Smith could have the same career trajectory. Alex Ross is getting all the pub. But Smith definitely has tools to work with, and has the work ethic and attitude you want. Keep an eye on him.
Sorry Jake, Justified is the corrected answer...Justified...Thanks for playing..
@Kris Duck Dynasty fo sho
Where do you see OU basketball ranking in the standings next season?
The Big 12 is wide open. Kansas loses all five starters, OSU probably is going to lose Smart, K-State loses McGruder, and I think Iowa State has to replace some guys. OU could easily post a top four finish in the league, if the three frosh take the next step.
So with the Big 12 eliminated from both tournaments...Mad Men season premiere on Sunday, am I right?
Don't watch it, so don't know.
how well does the ou secondary stack up against big 12 opponents
The secondary was very good last year, even though the overall defense was not. With Colvin back, at least you know you have a lockdown corner, which a lot of teams don't. OSU and Texas have athletes could be better in the secondary, but TCU would probably get my vote as No. 1 with Verrett and others.
Oline stay healthy this year? Opinion on Hollis? given the chance you've seen him personally.
I wish I could say yes, but this o-line can't guy any luck, losing two guys already this spring in Ikard and Evans. Given Shead's injury history, I have a hard time believing that it will. Best to build up some depth this spring and have guys like Ty Darlington ready to go. Chances are, you'll probably need them.
What's the deal with Quincy Russel Jake?
Good question. If I had to bet, I think he still ends up in Norman. But with JUCOs, I believe it when I see them physically on campus, and Russell is not on campus yet.
Stoops called out Corey Nelson as the best player on his defense two years ago. Was that just lip service or is Nelson, when used "correctly" truly one of our best defensive players? OU fans haven't ever really seen Nelson live up to that billing in any way. Not even flashes of brilliance, just mediocrity from Nelson.
I don't think it was lip service. I think Nelson has been grossly misused the last two years. He would have been an upgrade over a hobbled Travis Lewis two years ago, and OU would have done better with him on the field over whatever that was they tried late last season. OU has no chance to have a good defense next season if Nelson is not a standout. I think the staff realizes that. He has a chance to be one of the best players... assuming that he's given a chance.
Can the basketball team really be better next year and keep improving with the losses of both Osby and M'baye?
It can, but it's going to take an instant impact from Ryan Spangler, and the three frosh have to elevate their games. If those things happen, that goal is attainable. If not, OU figures to take a step back next season, because Osby did a lot of this club, and to a lesser degree, M'Baye.
With the recent emergence of Ahmad Thomas in spring practices, do you think that there's a possibility of the Fresno safeties coming in receiving redshirts in favor of Thomas and Lynn in the safety slots?
No, I think Hatari Byrd plays, even if it's just as a backup and on special teams. Sooners don't have the luxury defensively right now to redshirt guys that can play, and Byrd -- from everything I've seen -- can play.
How worried should OU fans be about Gabe Lynn being listed as a defensive starter? Is there a chance we see Ahmad Thomas and Hatari Byrd manning the safety spots by mid-season?
He was a starter last year, so you shouldn't be surprised... There's a chance Thomas and Byrd are both starting by October. That would not stun me. We'll see.
I probably missed this, but Gary Simon officially off the team?
You did miss that.
Prediction on metoyer's stat line for 2013?
30 catches, 450 yards, 3 TDs? This team is going to pass less, too, I think.
Chances Texas smashmo...I mean up-temp wins the Big 12 next year? *snicker*
Identity crises central over in Austin, right?
Much like a QB going to a guru to improve mechanics, any chance Lynn can be sent to a tackling guru?
The negativity oozes....
Do you find it odd/perplexing that Josh Heupel has ignored the TE given the enormous amount of success OU has enjoyed at the position the past 10+ years, which includes his title run?
Yes and no. Yes in 2011. James Hanna and Trent Ratterree (and for awhile Austin Haywood) provided a pretty formidable TE rotation. I mean, Hanna is playing in the NFL. No in 2012. They didn't have anyone who could really play, and the offense was better with the 4 WRs on the field anyway. This year will be closer to 2011, so it will be interesting to see how much the TEs are used. But McNamara/Grant have a chance to provide a nice combo TE package.
What are the chances that OU actually has more rushes than passes next year?
Pretty slim. Don't think they run THAT much.
With all the hype about incoming freshmen i think people get a little too excited in talking about Thomas and Byrd. Hayes and Lynn will start all season with the possible exception of Gabe Lynn being Gaby Lynn and then he gets replaced by a freshman. There is no way OU starts two true freshman safeties...agree or disagree?
Tony Jefferson started as a true freshman... so there's recent precedent for it. It's possible Lynn and Hayes start there all year, but I'm less than sure about that duo manning the most important positions in a Mike Stoops defense. There's possibility for a talented freshman (or freshmen) to emerge there.
Could the troubles recruiting linemen eventually spread to the "skill players." It already has had its effects on the team's overall performance. And who beats whom in the World Series?
Reds fan, but going Nats over Tigers. There's no signs of the troubles spilling over to the skill positions. OU keeps dominating there, and I don't see that changing.
Wheres Oklahoma at with Nathan Starks
man you i should really answer isaacs question on Starks
Eh, maybe later...
I love you too Jake <3
I knew it!
dont be too surprised if they run more than they pass jake. Even the 2008 juggernaut ran 42 times a game and only passed 37.
You know what, good point. I didn't have time to go look at the numbers in the 3 seconds between questions. But now that I think about it, there's a good chance. Kevin Wilson was more prone to run than Heupel, but the personnel with this offense begs for a strong running game.
Let's go Nats!
Do you think Akem and Whitely Jr sign with the Sooners?
Not as crazy about OU's chances with Akem. Strong OSU connection there, and the SEC is going to be knocking on his door. Sooners in better shape with Parker.
I love the way you lie but if it starts to rain get ur own umbrella
Sorry -- Team Keys here
WHERES OKLAHOMA AT ON STARKS
Starks has a good rapport with Cale Gundy, and OU has developed strong ties with Bishop Gorman, Starks' school in Vegas. But everyone and their pup wants Starks. Gonna be a tough, but OU is in strong position here.
Just for reference the last time OU had more running plays than passing for the year was in 2008.
Isaac. We're as close as anyone. Look at Gundy's track record. What do you think??
You said OU keeps dominating recruiting skill players??? Who??...maybe 3 skill players on nfl rosters now.
You're right, Ryan Broyles was so-so.
What do you think if tubby smith at tech?
Seems like the best possible hire Tech could have made, right?
Ok, each to his own but these half-glass empty questions are getting annoying. I mean look at Texas, they've had it rough and everyone is complaining about going 20-6 in the last couple of years. "Well that's not Oklahoma football". Cool story bro, compared to other programs like Texas that has recently struggled, Ohio State who has compliance all over them, and USC who's been randomly in and out of the picture. OU could be A LOT worse off, /endrant.
Is this TMZ or SoonerNation? :)
Remember when TMZ broke that Tiny Gallon story? So bizarre.
Sam Bradford was terrible.
And DeMarco Murray and Jermaine Gresham clearly can't cut it in the pros, either...
How bad is the OU defense going to be? Our LBs basically suck, our corners are overrated, the safeties either suck or are new, and our DL may be the worst in the conference. What exactly is there to be hopeful about?
Haha, Post of the Day!!
Jake, should OU fans be disappointed if they don't see a heavy dose (or at least some dose) of zone read this year? Count me as one who would be.
Count me as two.
OU gonna get any transfers or recruits to replace M'Baye?
That would be a likely scenario, but I haven't heard of any names.
Jake, any word on how Jordan Wade has played this spring. With Russel up in the air, Wade is almost a guaranteed starter next fall.
He's coming along. Still a ways to go. But he's showing more and more. Watch out for Torrea Peterson. Hearing good things about him lately.
Oh, and who was that guy whow wore 28? Adrian something.
Why can't we pulled the high end Defensive Tackles??? Is OU somehow undesirable for this position??? I like what I've seen and heard from Coach Montgomery but he's already slipping with Quincy Russell...Anyways...one more question...How good in the OU vs ND game going to be to this year???
Can't evaluate Montgomery on Russell alone (and he still might and probably will get him to Norman). Russell had developed a relationship with Shipp, which is why apparently he's considering Arizona State. Judge Montgomery on the next class, not the guys Shipp recruited.
Should we worry about Texas and their shiny new up-tempo offense? Or can we expect to add to the current streak?
After reading about the Orange-White game, I would not be worried -- though it's not like the Sooners are fielding the '85 Bears defensively right now either.
whos injured in spring football>
Gabe Ikard (broken hand) Tyler Evans (torn ACL, career probably over) Nila Kasitati (recovering from torn ACL) Aaron Ripkowski (wrist). Think that's it.
How much do you see veteran players like Neal and Clark getting good playing time next year for bball?
Both are probably going to have to play a lot. Lon mentioned Clark specifically when talking about replacing M'Baye.
With the talk all winter about OU going to the 3-4, has OU actually been showing that transition in spring practice? Do we have the quality and depth at LB to make it work?
They actually haven't practiced the 3-4 at all yet.
Whats it looking like at DEnd besides Grim and chuke for upperclassman? anybody doing good?
Really like the potential of Onuoha and Tapper. Both guys have a chance to be really good. As for upperclassmen, Chuka is now playing DT, and Favors is working in there, too. I don't see Chaz Nelson ever making a big impact, but we'll see.
Does having Chris Ault in town signify us running primarily from the pistol formations this season? Also, I am very excited hearing this news since I felt that we've never really run the pistol formations correctly.
I think it signifies that OU will be running the QB out of the Pistol. But OU has been running the Pistol almost exclusively since Josh Heupel took over as coordinator.
Any word on our Juco DT? Do you think Quincy stays committed?
Nothing really. Sooners still expecting him, but we'll see if he ever gets here.
How much will the commitment of Perine, and impressive offseason of young Ross, impact the chances OU signing Starks?
Many of the schools recruiting Starks have impressive backs.
Who leads the team in sacks this year?
Safety bet is Geneo Grissom, but if you were giving me money lines, there might be some value in Onuoha.
What did you think of Baylor being upset? It seems to me a little sour grapes from them and RG3 needs to chill it on twitter.
Fine with RGIII, more so than Mulkey trying to rip off her jacket after Griner clearly fouled the Louisville player.
As of right now, who do you think will be the biggest impact player next year?
Whoever is playing quarterback.
Alex Ross - O/U 600 yards rushing and 5 TD's
Under. Damien Williams and Brennan Clay haven't graduated yet.
Why can't OU secure a top-flight DT? Are we being negatively recruited against? Is our perception that bad? Do our facilities suck? What is it?
Give it time. That's why Stoops went out and got Montgomery, who was a prolific recruiter at Michigan.
How's Cody Thomas baseball season going?
He was off to a great start, but I haven't checked in awhile. Will look into. Still probably a 4th or 5th round pick, from what I hear.
Do you think OU's problems on defense in practice is scheme oriented or is it coming from lack of talent?
Chicken and the egg. The lack of talent had OU tinkering with goofy schemes late last season. I think the bigger issue is talent. Good talent can win with basic schemes. That's why finding coaches that recruit was the emphasis this offseason.
Guys, that's all the time we have today. Stay with SoonerNation for your spring ball and recruiting coverage. Chat will be back next week, same time, same place. Everyone have a great week.
