Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

JJT
  (1:02 PM)

Still in Houston waiting for Yu Darvish's 2013 debut. Lots to talk about with Rangers and mavs. Some Cowboys chatter and, perhaps, even some Stars talk. Let's roll

eric (vancouver)

JJT, re - recent tony romo column: c'mon man, why can't you admit that TR gets blamed for losses when he shouldn't. of those so called 1-6 'lose or your out' games, do you really think that all 6 of those losses were on TR? if you do then i have lost respect for your football sense. the truth is that TR was bad in maybe 3 of those games, and i'm talking bad to the point where he was the main reason for the loss, YET NOT THE ONLY REASON. (in not one game was he the only reason they lost) what blows my mind about the last redskin loss when he threw 3 int's is that even though he didn't have a good game, in fact he had a bad game, he was a main reason for getting them back in the game and possibly pulling it out in the 4th Q (something he's done more than any other QB in the league since 2009 i might add) and yet i never hear you mention a word...A WORD...about the 200+ yards that the defense allowed that game! dallas didn't lose because of TR, they lost because their D couldn't stop the run, or pass, or anything RG3 did that day, and it forced TR to try and win the game on his own, something that even i admit shouldn't ever happen because he's not good enough for that on most days.yes TR didn't have a good game that day, but no it wasn't his fault that they lost. (unfortunately that last int wasn't very good optics for his cause) so please stop putting all those 1-6 losses on TR, give him some love, show some fairness, some sanity, and admit that at least half of those losses were not his fault. cheers,e

I see we're gonna start with the Romo Apologists today. Here's the deal Romo Apologists and Romo Haters seem to have a hard time grasping. Those of you who fit into that category see Romo in black or white. I see him in gray. He's an excellent QB who has talent to lead Dallas to a Super Bowl, but it takes more than talent. He has rarely played his BEST football in the MOST important games. Sorry, that's the truth. As for the Redskins' game, the only thing that mattered at the end of the day is he had the ball 70 yards from the end zone with a chance to change his narrative. A FG to tie a TD to win. He had played well in the 4Q most of the season and had thrown only three picks in last 8 games entering the Washington game. So on FIRST down he throws a game-killing pick giving him three for the season. You take the sack on first down or you heave it out of bounds. You don't make a risky throw

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How will the Rangers will do with against the Astros overall since they Face each other 18 times?

JJT
  (1:09 PM)

I'd say they should 13 of 18. Maybe 14.

Craig (Montgomery, AL)

Tony Romo has had trouble in pressure moments. How much pressure do you think the big contract - and all of the attention it will get for the next six months - adds to Romo?

JJT
  (1:10 PM)

none. He's been under intense pressure and scrutiny since the cabo trip. This shouldn't change anything

Bill (Round Rock)

Do the Mavs make the playoffs?

JJT
  (1:10 PM)

I don't think so. Utah has 6 home games, where they'e pronominal. And the Mavs, average on the road, have a 4-game road trip right now

Ty (OKC)

JJT, It seems like Jerry is trying to pay and will Romo into being a Super Bowl quarterback. I know they don't have better options, but that's a lot of money for a QB who goes 1-6 in elimination games. Why not make him perform or hold out for a more reasonable deal?

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

Romo had all of the leverage. The Cowboys needed salary-cap space and he had the biggest cap figure. That said, his contract isn't really out of line in terms of yearly average with QBs of his ilk

Steve (Las Vegas)

What's the best-case season scenario you see for the Cowboys?

JJT
  (1:13 PM)

I don't make predictions until after the preseason bro. We don't even know who's on the team yet.

Dave (Austin)

If I'm convinced the Cowboys will never win again with Jerry in command, how long do I have to wait for Stephen to take over?

JJT
  (1:13 PM)

you realize Stephen is part of all this decision-making, right?

kevin (wishing 2011)

so who on this mavs team is back next year -outside of dirk and marion (maybe). is derrick rose happy in chicago?

JJT
  (1:18 PM)

I think they'll try to re-sign Wright, Mayo and Collison, but at the right price for each of them. None is a star.

Ian (Atl, GA)

Romo deserved big money but my issue is the 6 years. Doesn't this create big salary cap issues down the road. Likely that he is 39, not on the roster but they are still paying big money for him. What do you think of this scenario??

JJT
  (1:23 PM)

You have to have enough length on the contract to lower the yearly salary cap figure. There's going to be a huge cap hit at some point, but the Cowboys are trying to win right now. They'll worry about the future when it arrives

Jon (South Carolina)

Will Dallas use the 5 million in cap space or save it for next year?

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

They gotta use it for draft picks and some role-playing FAs

Mike (Tampa)

Will they sign Spencer as well this offseason? whats your thinking?

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

I wouldn't. I need to see him play a year at DE in the NFL

Damon (Fort Worth)

Do you think the Mav would be in the playoffs if Dirk was healthy all year?

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

maybe. maybe not. The reason I don't like hypotheticals is because every team fights through some adversity that would've made their season easier if it had worked out another way

james (NY)

Do you think that dez is that confident in his ability to put up those numbers he said?

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

he said it was possible. He'd be happy, I suppose, with 100 catches, 1600 yards and 15 TDS. That's possible

James (Dallas)

So with the news that the Stars are going to try and trade Jagr I assume they're going to try next year for the playoffs?

JJT
  (1:29 PM)

You should've known that as soon as they traded Morrow without getting a NHL ready player back because that was a give up on the season. Add in the fact they're tuning out the coach and show no signs of life this season is over

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Blessings JJT - Thanks for hosting today's chat. In your mind, what has to happen for the Mavs to beat the Lakers tonight?

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

The Mavs have to push the tempo and score in transition, Dirk needs an efficient scoring game and someone else has to bring some offense. They have Shawn Marion to use on Kobe, so hopefully they can control him

Brian (Dallas)

Will the Rangers make the playoffs this year?

JJT
  (1:33 PM)

Yep. They'll win 90 games. I have them winning division, but 90 either way should get them in playoffs

Barry (Houston)

Are Justin Durant and will Allen guys that Monte wanted or was the cowboys jsut filling holes?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

Monte wanted them. Durant will probably start and Allen is backup and ST guy

Danny (FL)

Is tony getting that type of money if he's a free agent righht now?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

probably more. You think Minnesota, Oakland, Buffalo, Arizona wouldn't have rather paid Tony than the garbage they have at QB

Terry (@ work)

In your opinion how much of the defense and a bad offensive line effected romo ability to win big games?

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

No game is ever perfect. This sounds like a Romo Apologist set up question. Bottom line: Tony hasn't played his BEST football when it mattered most

Victor (Texas)

Now that Tony the man, dallas must protect there biggest asset. do you think interior line is more of an need in the draft?

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

the line is important. This year is a good year to make it happen

Eric (cali)

Do you know how well Monte Kiffen Defenses in the past has done as far as turnover margin? because thats been the achillesheel of the cowboys defense

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

not off the top of my head, but you can go to profootball-reference.com and find it pretty easily

raynor (dallas)

Is it wise for the stars to trade jagr?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

he's not making a difference in dallas, meaning they're not a playoff team with him

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

tackles make more. Pressure up the middle is disruptive, but the best pass rushers are still on the edge

Daryl (Jersey)

How often is it the cowboys actually draft a guy in the 1st round that they brought in for a visit?

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

over the years, they've drafted quite a few of the guys they've brought in to visit

Fred (Sugarland)

The Cowboys identity right now is either romo or bust, so what do they need to do to help him?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

improve the line and the defense

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

With Romo getting his new deal from dallas, how much longer will dallas hold off getting a young qb to eventually replace him?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

they should start it now. Romo's realistically has 4 years left. You better have his guy in place soon

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

Romo is a good QB. You can with him. No team lets a good QB leave because they're so hard to find

Russell (Austin)

What good will it do to just get one guard? It's not as if the Cowboys have a trustworthy center that can help the other guard. Do you think Livings or Bernadeux have potential major play improvements if fully healthy?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

Livings was OK last season

Kyle (Forney)

Please tell Ian Kinsler to either move to the OF or 1B. This team would be better right now if Profar was getting AB's. Don't you think his youthful attitude would help the clubhouse?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

i don't think any rookie impacts a clubhouse

Brad (Oklahoma)

Hello,Who is the one player Dallas missed on in the last 10 or 12 years that you thought would have been a hit? Carpenter, Roy Williams (UT) Ekuban?

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

I thought Carpenter would be a good player because he was versatile, had been productive at a big program. But it took about 3 months to see that wasn't the case. When he was inactive for the 1st game, I knew he was a bust. Not even good enough to be on ST. A linebacker? Not good.

Max (Dallas )

JJT - I thought your opinions have been very ballanced on TR to be honest . That was just one article out of many and many more comments where you have said some of these same good things about TR. Tell the guy to read all of your work and relax before making a dumb comment

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

Romo Apologists and Romo Haters are each passionate groups

IngyBall (Dallas)

Cowboys will win the superbowl if they produce a pro bowl oline. fact?

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

Nope. The Ravens didn't have the best OL in football, but the Cowboys would be a lot better

Max (Dallas )

How is Ronald Leary working out ? Is he gone ? Does he still have a chance to develope or is his knees just too far gone ?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

No idea. The players are off for another week, I think

Matt (PA)

I hear OG, Safety, DT, and running back are the big concerns entering the draft. Which do you think the cowboys will address first??

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

Seriously, the best player at one of those three spots. At 18, it's hard to say who will be there

Clif (Norman)

What do the Stars need to do to get back to the annual playoff team they were?

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

beter talent and find some coaching consistency. You just can't change coaches every 2 years and wonder why it doesn't work

Jose Hernandez (Austin)

JJT, Big 5 OL off the board, Vaccaro and Richardsons off, Tavon Austin from WV or Hopkins from Clemson are there, do they grab one or trade down?

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

i wouldn't trade down

Steve (Seattle)

Eric Winston has proven he is reliable. Doug Free has not. FA is at the 1-2 year deals level. Makes no sense they aren't kicking the tires on this guy! Thoughts?

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

if Free isn't here Parnell or a rookie will start

Cain (Berwyn)

Do you see the cowboys signing any ol in free agency now? Rumor mill has Brandon Moore as option.

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

nope

Dan (Minn)

the first 3 OT's will be long gone.....best shot would be Fluker. Who would you rather have? Fluker, Parnell, Free, or Andre Smith? Why hasn't Dallas called this man in???? makes zero sense 2 yr deals are the norm now in FA. Dallas can make that happen!

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

I don't thnk Andre Smith is taking a 2-year deal, and he has weight issues

Jenna (Pittsburgh)

Aside from tremendous leadership, can you tell me a little about what Penguins fans can/should expect from Brenden Morrow? So far he seems like such a classy guy, we're happy to have him, but what about on the ice, what tangibles does he bring?

JJT
  (1:50 PM)

he's a physical guy, a banger who scores most of his goals within 10 feet of the net. He'll give you some grit and he'll do dirty work. He's not a big guy and the reason he's slowed down is because he's banged so much over the years

John T. Gold (Salt Lake City)

Hey JJT- what are thoughts about Parnell? Are the Cowboys seriously considering the same approach as last year at RT?

JJT
  (1:50 PM)

he'll go to camp competing for a starting job. He did OK last year

Dan (Minn)

Andre Smith WILL take a 2 year deal bc nobody else will offer more!! He'd be off the market by now if that was the case! You'll see. Some team will sign him for 2 yrs 6M and i will scratch my head saying: Dallas blew it again.

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

If that was the case, the Bengals would've already signed him

DJ (NC)

When do the players start gearing up to get ready for the season strength and conditioning wise? Or does that pretty much start as soon as the season ends?

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

Cowboys start in a week or so

jacob muhlendorf (alabama)

hello jjt , the cowboys should win the superbowl this coming year , we have the talent , the squad , the most talented qb in the nfl , an a pretty good wr squad , our defense should live up to its name , you give my cowboys hope>?

JJT
  (1:52 PM)

I guess it's 5 pm somewhere

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Right now San Antonio and OKC seem to be headed for the Western Conference finals . . . But is there another team in the West that you think could be dangerous once the playoffs start?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

memphis. bang inside, control the boards and play D. And they have a point guard

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Thanks JJT. Speaking of the Cowboys o-line: Kowalski, Arkin, Leary, Dockery . . . Will any of these guys see a larger role this season, or are they all just wasted roster space right now?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

Leary and Kowalski have a chance. The others: none

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

great chat today, I appreciate all the question. Time to watch some baseball this afternoon and the Mavs tonight
