OK, time to get started with the post spring game chat
How will the Texas Longhorns will do in College Baseball this season?
So reliable, Chris. So reliable. They lost two of three at OSU and have a series against OU this weekend. Do well there and maybe they finish top four in B12
Why aren't you a supporter of Stacey Searles?
Because Texas was unable to rush the ball for more than 100 yards against OU, TCU or KSU and has Gray, Bergeron and Brown. Stacy likes to complain about the talent, or lack thereof, instead of producing results against good defensive lines. Mason Walters has not improved one bit. To date, Flowers has not improved - although reports are he was pretty good this spring. Texas had a veteran line last year and was a joke against any team that had sort of talent on the defensive line.
How do i get my hair to be like yours?
Tons of practice and a visit to the wig shop.
Should i be worried at all about losing my job this summer?
Next March. And Buzz Williams might want to start house hunting.
Do you know any websites that have the Spring game so i can watch it? dont have LHN up here and even know i followed the game would still like to watch it. Thanks Carter
Not really. Just highlights out there now. Sorry about that. I know it is aggravating.
Were do we stand with the St. Agustine kids.. Paul is commited but said it is a must to get back to texas. Havnt heard much from Roberts lately. we are in the lead for Garnett. And the jackpot for Fournette hopefuly still includes Texas? What have you heard Carter?
Garnett was here over the weekend so you shoudl feel good about him. And Texas needs a DT so that helps. The others will be tougher to get. Fournette is going to be hard to keep away from SC.
Im kinda suprised that with all the DB's the longhorns have offered and all the kids in LA that have been offered, Laurence Jones hasnt been one of them... why is that Carter?
Evaluation of what type of talent fits. Listen, Akina has done pretty well with talent evaluation. I think I'm going with him on this one.
ANY WORD ON JORDAN HICKS MEDICAL REDSHIRT YEAR AND HOW DID ASHTON DORSEY THE NEXT STONEY CLARK LOOK.....
That should be cleared up soon. Dorsey made much less noise than your ALL CAPS TYPING.
CEDRIC REED THE NEXT STORMIN NORMINE WATKINS MALCOM BROWN THE NEXT BUTCH HADNOT LOOK IN THE SCRIMMAGE...
Thought Reed would be better than he was. He wasn't.
I think the QB depth should be 1. Ash 2. Overstreet 3. McCoy 4. Brewer and then redshirt Swoopes. You know what you have in McCoy which is a lot of heart but not much skill. I think Overstreet has a lot more potential and can use his legs better to get out of trouble. I saw Swoopes at the spring game and he still seems way too raw to burn a redshirt. What do you think? What you think the coaches will do?
I like the idea of getting Swoopes an RS. But the coaches appear not to have much faith in the other guys. So what they are going to do is keep Case at No. 2 and if they need him early then he will play. If an injury or benching happens later in the season you could see Swoopes get time.
Any chance John Harris helped his chances of getting on the field and moving up the depth chart?
I like what Harris can do with his size, hands and speed. His playing time will be determined by the return, or lack of return, of Cayleb Jones.
Does David Ash have the skill set to throw for over 3K? The new offense should better his chances.
He threw for 2,699 last year so yes.
Rumors about Overstreet possibly switching to Defense, any extra information on that or just a rumor right now?
What is he going to play? He was recruited as a WR possibility out of high school. He is not better than the safeties Texas currently has on the roster. If he moves I think it would be to a hybrid offensive player.
After watching the spring game, do you see any 13' freshmen making impacts this coming year?
The wide receivers. Texas lacks depth there. One of those guys could play some.
Who do you have as your breakout Sophomores this year?
Well Daje if he gets the ball enough.I did really like Cayleb before his trouble with the law.Sanders might produce but was underwhelmed at spring game.Duke Thomas is going to get on the field and do some things.Estelle will not be a breakout player but has a chance to be a very good backup tackle.
A lot of people knock Barnes coaching style, do you feel he's too harsh on his players, or he's a coach that a player who wants to go to the league should play for??
He is not Mike Rice of Rutgers. Anyone see that video? Yikes.Barnes is tough on guys. But a lot of coaches are. My biggest issue is that his offense is so stagnant and he has to have a NBA player to make it go. You don't always have an NBA player at Texas.
Who do you predict to lead in receiving yard and rushing yard in 2013?
Davis and Gray
Who will we say had the "best" season of all longhorns at the end of the 2013 season?
Whew tough one. I think Gray because he is going to have 1,100 plus yards.
Any players on this team that will everyone talking about them that aren't on anyone's radar right now?
Sheroid Evans. Watch out for him at corner. Seems to be doing some good things and Texas will play him a lot because they will have to go nickel against spread teams.
Tubby Smith was hired here in da LBK this week and fans aren't too excited. How do you feel UT fans would have accepted Tubby had he been hired to replace Barnes? I feel he was a great hire for tech, but these fans aren't the brightest.
People want someone young, fresh and new. Tubby doesn't have the Q rating that a lot of guys do. Great coach. But he is not going to excite any fan base except for maybe Georgia where he was one of the few coaches ever to be successful.
Do you see anyone transferring? I see brewer gone, but not sure on anyone else.
I think it would be wise for one of the QBs to find a different home. Texas is not going to play five guys at that spot. And if Swoopes is the future then Brewer and Overstreet have already been past over.
Over/under 3 games that Ash is pulled for his backup? And do you see anyone besides Case getting on the field if that happens, not talking set plays or mop up duty, I mean if we need to pull off a win. Thanks for answering as many of my questions as you will. Always enjoy your insight.
Under. Major is much better at having his guy ready than Harsin was and he is going to be able to calm Ash down in the games when he does have issues. Only way Ash gets pulled is if he is injured.
If Tyrone Swoopes keeps improving and shows that he is ready to play. How much potential does this offense have with Jonathon Gray, Malcolm Brown, Daje Johnson, Mike Davis, and Jordan Shipley all on the field together?
Problem is Swoopes needs some seasoning but that is an unreal amount of speed and talent on the field. I think though people are underestimating how good David can be at running the ball as well.
how many players can texas take in the 2014 class and do you think leonard fournette will be a longhorn
They will take closer to the limit. And no I think he goes to the west coast.
MVP of the Spring Game?
Max and William for working the recruiting scene like crazy. After that I would say maybe Mykkele Thompson. Hey he made a tackle in space and had a 661-yard kick return.
How worried should I be about our OL with Caleb Bluiettt busting through so easily?
Not too worried. Geoff Swaim missed him once that I saw. So that is on the tight end. And the line is banged up right now. Be more optimistic about Bluiett than concerned about the OL pass blocking.
Which guys that we haven't really discussed up to this point performed well at the spring game?
Well I think that Jinkens had a good game although he missed a tackle on Swoopes. Hicks was decent but he also missed a tackle. Evans and Phillips showed some good things. But one guy that nobody paid much attention to who had an unreal game was Malcolm Brown. He had two rushes and averaged 16.5 yards per rush. He looked fast, strong and more importantly healthy.
Who are the top recruits that you think we will sign for this recruiting class? and what are the chances with Leonard Fournette?
Well Bobby that is about 25 guys you are asking about there. Here is list of the prospects who were in town last weekend http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/texas/forums/_/the-tower#!/topic/1363927194-348-145
Does the team's performance in the spring game give you more/less/about the same confidence that this Texas team can get to 10+ wins
I have some issues with the defense. Still not confident in that side of the ball mainly because there about three or four guys who are ballers out there and seven or eight others who are realying on their athletic ability instead of heart. Plus the coaching. Yikes they were unprepared at times to go against a simplified offense.Issues can be fixed and this team has the talent to win 10 or 11 games.
Is Tyrone Swoopes the #2 qb? If so, is it simply because Swoopes is more athletic than the others or is he also a better passer?
More upside all around. He can do more off-schedule than any of the others and get Texas positive yards when there are none to be found.
David Ash seems to be very accurate on short and intermediate throws but struggles with the longer passes. Can Texas win a Big 12 championship without a deep threat?
He was a very good deep threat in November last year when he and Davis hooked as as one of the two best combos in the country. (USC had a better combo that month.)What Texas needs is another speed receiver to take pressure off Davis. That is why they are looking at Duke Thomas.
What individual or unit were you most disappointed with both on offense and defense?
I know the D line didn't have JJ. But those guys did not battle hard against a patchwork second strong o line.On the offensive side of the ball, Ash's two picks in the span of three throws were very alarming.
The Armanti and D'onta Foreman situation is pretty hot right now. In your opinion, do you think Texas should and would give an offer to D'onta?
Well they are twins so i bet they are a package deal. They were in Austin last weekend. I think KD Cannon's situation and other receivers might play into the equation on when these twins get offered.
Kd Cannon, Jamal Adams, and Solomon Thomas all seem to go in the same circles as the Texas commits. Is UT the leader for all three?
for sure on Thomas. Can't tell as much on the other two.
So far I have not seen or heard that an additional WR have steped up. Can we have an affective passing game if the only reliable WR are Mike Davis and Jaxon Shipley?
That is why they looked at Duke Saturday to see if he could step in. But, yes, that is a worry. I'm not convinced Jones is going to be an option for Texas next year.
Do you think we have a shot at flipping Nick Harvey. I heard he made it to the spring game.
He did. And there is always a chance. But TAMU is rolling right now.
Is the WR position hurting so badly that it is necessary to move Duke to the offensive side of the ball? I thought he was going to be a strong contributor to the defense in 2013 and a very solid starter in 2014.
Well they need some speed. Daje can do some things but they like him so much in the run game too that putting him exclusively at WR could hurt his impact. Evans has been better than expected at corner so that is why they are toying with the Duke move.
You seem to have a low opinion of coach Searls. Does that mean that you do not see our OL improving from last year?
I watched him at Georgia for a couple of years and did not see the o line ever improve under him there. But he has so much talent and so much experience that there is no way he cannot improve in 2013. But measure him and the line by the OU, BYU and TCU games not when they play Baylor.
Does the commitment of PG Yancy-Harris increase Rick Barnes chances of returning after next season given that Kabongo is likely gone?
Barnes has a long way to go and one commit is not going to turn things. Randle might have. Or the Harrison twins. But Barnes missed on them.
Who would be the top targets for Texas next spring if Barnes gets canned? Who is the most likely to come down to Austin?
Buzz Williams. End of story.
At what position do you see Raulerson playing the majority of his career at Texas?
He is really still putting on weight so center might be the spot fr him. He is a good leader and smart so center does make since.
So everyone is getting excited over the commitment of a three star defensive end from Abilene, why? Also, i saw on Derick Roberson's twitter that he wants to get out of Texas. Is this true?
Everyone gets excited about every commit. Not sure on Roberson. He's a kid. Kids change their minds every day.
How many WRs do you think Texas takes in the 2014 Class? There are quite a few offers out with 2 already committed. Any thoughts on who will round out the 2014 WR Class?
I think they need four. WR has been a very hard position for Texas when it comes to getting production from recruits not named Shipley. So Texas has to take four and hope that two develop.
You think SC iwill be stiffer competition for Fournette than LSU? And why are chatters yelling at you?
Lost my mind when i just said SC sorry. Should have included LSU and actually put them at the top.Everybody yells at me. You should hear my wife.
How many carries a game do you see the running back getting this season?
Well if they have 85 plays a game then 35-40
Is it just me or did our DT (our entire DL for that matter) look underwhelming?
It is not just you. They did.
The Spring game is going to be aired on ESPNU next Monday or Tuesday night at 8PM, I think. Check the listings.
Billy thanks for coming through with that.
Do you think Brandon Moore will have a breakout year on the Longhorns defensive line?
He declared for the draft. Going in about the sixth round is my guess.
A few weeks ago Kirk Bohls of the Austin American Statesmen wrote a pretty scathing articles about Mack Brown. He accused Mack Brown of being uneven in dealing with disciplinary issues. Bohls specifially wrote about Case McCoy and Jordan Hicks being summarily suspended from the team and sent home following an accusation of rape. This action stood in stark contrast, writes Bohls , to action taken against Caleb Jones who broke a fellow student-athlete's jaw. Jones was allowed to participate in numerous practices even though he had admitted (to coaches) to carrying out the assualt. Is Bohls being fair to Mack Brown or is there more to this story and that is why Mack responded differently in these situations?
From what I heard once Mack heard of the Jones incident -- before it came out in the media -- he began disciplinary actions against him but it was kept inside the program. It was only after the news came out of the assault that Brown commented publicly and stated what discipline Jones would be receiving.
Fournette to the West? Where?
I think SC will make a run. But LSU should be the leader.
you have to vote 1 QB off the island and it can't be case mccoy because he's a freakin mccoy. Who's it going to be mr. carter?
Any news on a possible offer for C.J Reese?
Love your articles Carter. You bring some semblance of reality into Mack Brown's delusional world. I was glad to read that you thought highly of Swoopes (or at least his potential). To me, Jalen Overstreet looked faster (acceleration, top end speed) than Swoopes and everyone talks about how the ball just rockets out of Jalen's throws... so why is he not the #2 QB behind Ash? I think we will kick ourselves later if and when Jalen transfers at this rate.. your thoughts?
I really like Jalen's throwing motion too. He is the best thrower Texas has. I'm not sure why he does not get a better shot at this thing. I have been told that he can be very inconsistent with his passes. And Texas cannot afford turnovers.
Heard like Sanders had a good game, do you think that he can establish himself in that 3rd wr spot so that he can get full time starters reps in the Fall?
Oh he has too. He needs to step up big time because Texas has to have a third and fourth receiver to make this offense go.
What do the coaches do with Demarco Cobbs?
Well he is still hurt so it might be a while. I just don't think he is going to be a reliable player. I had thought he was going to make a huge impact in 2012 because of his speed. But he did not. He is going to be a backup for his remaining years.
Do you think Keith Frazier will join Yancy-Harris in the Longhorn backcourt next season?
I don't think so.
Of the 5 OL recruits in the 2013 class, who will make the biggest impact of the next 2 seasons?
James and Harrison. Harrison immediate because he is a JC.
The Longhorns are stacking up early commits as usual. Has Mack Brown refined his evaluation process enough where these guys will live up to hype unlike the previous seasons during this downturn?
I think he always brought in good talent. His issue has been coaching them when they get to Texas and not playing favorites with these guys. He needs to hold them all accountable to the same standards. He swears he is doing this now. I will wait and hold off judgment.
How determined is the staff to get Swoopes his redshirt? I get that an injury would probably change things, but is there any real consideration of burning it just for wildcat type stuff?
I think he will be in an emergency RS situation. Meaning he is going to get equal snaps with McCoy in practice but only play if Ash goes down with injury.
Do you really se us using the TE position more this season? I didn't see a lot of evidence in the spring game
McFarland had two catches in the first two drives. I like him to get the ball much more.
Which recruiting battle with LSU are the Longhorns most likely to win, Tony Brown or Leonard Fournette?
What Texas Longhorns College Baseball Players will play in Major(Minor) League Baseball in most of 2013?
Seven on opening day rosters.
I checked the listings. Spring game Monday at 9PM on ESPNU.
Billy comes through. Nice job
Who's your favorite longhorn of all time?
will texas be good in baseball this year
Armanti Foreman just decommited from the sooners. Is Burnt Orange in his future?
Yes. Larry Porter is in charge of everything south of I-10 and will be on that. A lot hinges on the brother.
If we only run the ball 35-40 times out of 85, this means Ash is getting 40 throws in each game. Is this a good idea going forward? Really?
Well I think it is more realistic to assume 75 plays a a game with Ash getting 30-35 throws. A lot will be screens so it is OK to trust him with that many.
Assuming ash keeps the job till he graduates, is it Heard or Swoopes in 2 years?
Swoopes. Heard needs to bulk up. Super skinny.
Hey Carter, love Hornsnation. Just saw a tweet from Diggs that says he's lost 12 pounds since december....safe to say that up tempo is gonna have our guys in superior shape?
No doubt. Diggs and Jinkens have to lead this defense. Those two guys have high motors. Need some of that intensity on the D line. Not sure where it is going to come from. Myabe Brown.
will texas football be good
Ask me after OU
Manny Diaz. I did not see any improvements in his porous schemes... the only positives were Santos losing weigh, Jinkens being Jinkens, and Sheroid Evans showing that Case does not belong as the #2 QB. Seriously, who taught him how to draw up defense? Madden 2011? What was the thought process behind bringing him back?
I am not going to argue either point. I have the same issues as you.
Isn't Mack Brown's new evaluation process just waiting for Oklahoma, A&M and LSU to offer a player before he does, so as to make sure they are quality players.
No. Mack is a very good recruiter and always has been. He is not a great developer of talent. Stoops is. Mack can get talent to the program no problem.
what does ou mean
How long until Augie, Mack, and Barnes have all been replaced?
Ok guys that looks likes all we have for today. Thanks
