Chat with Mel Kiper

ML (SC)

Mel, how crazy would a team have to be to take lattimore in the second? I personally feel like who ever gets him will get the steal of the draft? Thoughts... Thank you.

Mel Kiper
  (1:04 PM)

He's a first round caliber talent. But I think he's a Day 3 pick and basically redshirt him this year. And hope you can rehabilitate him and his injuries are in the past.

Drew (Green Bay, WI)

Why is NT John Jenkins GEORGIA projected to go late 2nd round? Aren't those big NT's supposed to be easy 1st rounders?

Mel Kiper
  (1:05 PM)

I like him, but I'm trying to find the right fit for him. Trying to find a team that can maximize his ability. I have him going to Houston late in the second. Certainly he could go early second, but he's a second round pick. He's a space eater.

Mike (Wisconsin)

Who do you see the Raiders taing at 3?

Mel Kiper
  (1:06 PM)

They could go a number of directions. DT Sharrif Floyd, Florida; CB, Dee Milliner, Alabama. Those are their two need areas. They don't have a second round pick, remember.

Mel Kiper
  (1:06 PM)

Darius Slay in the early third round would be their next possibility.

John (Wisc)

What position do you view Datone Jones playing in the NFL? Is he a 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE, 3-4 OLB?

Mel Kiper
  (1:07 PM)

He's not a LB. He's a 3-4 DE or 4-3 LDE. I could see him going in the second round to Arizona.

Mike (Atl)

The Falcons offense seems pretty well set, but the defense could use depth at every level. 11 picks this draft: over/under 7 picks used on defense?

Mel Kiper
  (1:08 PM)

They could go over, but they also need to shore up the OL. They need help at CB, DE. I could see them going in a variety of ways. They will go defensive heavy, but also OL.

Dan (Pittsburgh)

Is reaching for Eddie Lacy in the first round a reach for the Steelers?

Mel Kiper
  (1:09 PM)

I wouldn't take a RB then. I've been on the record as saying not taking a RB in the first round. I have him going 26 to Green Bay. It wouldn't be a pick I have a problem with. He's a good football player. I would think they go a different direction at 17.

Andrew Z (Struthers, OH)

If Milliner isn't available at 6 for the Browns, who do they target whether they stay put or trade down?

Mel Kiper
  (1:10 PM)

Trading down is a very distinct possibility. Unless they want to take another OLB like Dion Jordan. But I think trading is very possible.

shawn (Washington)

Who do you think Seattle should take in the second round since they have filled a lot of needs this offseason already? I think a good back-up for Wilson should come in later rounds

Mel Kiper
  (1:10 PM)

They could look at Johnathan Hankins, OSU, DT; in the third round, Vance McDonald, TE, Rice.

Matt (Houston)

do the Bears consider drafting a QB? Cutler is signed through this year and McCown is his backup. If this is make or break for Cutler and Trestman is a QB guru, wouldnt it be prudent to bring in a younger backup to develop?

Mel Kiper
  (1:11 PM)

You could. In the 3-5 round area. Zac Dysert, Miami (OH), Matt Scott, Arizona, Sean Renfree, Duke, Tyler Wilson, Arkansas. Sure some of those guys. But not until Day 3.

Beau (Montana)

At one point in their career, Kenny Tate and Marquese Wilson were considered high draft picks (1st or 2nd round), now they are late rounders. What happened?

Mel Kiper
  (1:12 PM)

You're graded on performance. They showed promise and potential and it just never materialized. Wilson could be a late Day 3 pick, Tate's more of a priority free agent.

C brown (Tahoe)

Yo Mel! Do you see Jesse Williams as a possible suitor to replace Justin Smith or will his lack of penetration keep him in the middle? Can't see the 49ers passing on D Jones and/or Jesse Williams.

Mel Kiper
  (1:13 PM)

I think he's a NT. He's played both, a 3-4 DE and a NT. He could be of interest to Chicago in the second round. He's a solid mid-second.

kevin (MO)

Whats Stars status and wheres the best fit for him?

Mel Kiper
  (1:14 PM)

Right now, the best fits are Tampa Bay or Carolina.

Johnny (Reno)

Where do you have Kapron Lewis-Moore? It wasn't until after he got hurt that Alabama really started running against Notre Dame at will in the NC.

Mel Kiper
  (1:14 PM)

More of a late round type guy. He's a 3-4 DE, coming off the injury. He had a productive senior year. He's a late rounder, priority, undrafted free agent.

Derek (Baltimore)

Who do you think the Ravens will pick in the first round?

Mel Kiper
  (1:15 PM)

I think they could look at Kevin Minter, if he's there. He's a MLB from LSU. If not, Jonathan Cyprien, S, FIU.

David (Charlotte)

What are the chances Jamar Taylor falls to 51 for the Redskins?

Mel Kiper
  (1:16 PM)

That would be great for the Redskins if he did. I have Taylor going 43 to Tampa Bay. I have him gone by 51. If he were there, he'd be great for the Redskins.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

I really think the Cowboys are in a pickle if the top 5 OL are gone...do they somewhat reach for DJ Fluker since they really need an OL, or do they go for a top flight NT or Safety and then address OL in the 2nd and 3rd round?

Mel Kiper
  (1:17 PM)

They need interior OL help. It's not a stretch to take a DT. That's a need. Sylvester Williams from UNC would be a nice fit. Justin Pugh, OL, would be a good fit in the second. Shawn Williams, S, Georgia would be good in the third.

Mac (Carlisle PA) [via mobile]

Tavon Auston goes to ______

Mel Kiper
  (1:18 PM)

Right now, I have him going to St. Louis at 16.

Ben (Baton Rouge) [via mobile]

Who are some risers and fallers right now?

Mel Kiper
  (1:20 PM)

Risers: Robert Woods, WR, USC; Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State; Kyle Long, OL, Oregon; Corey Lemonier, DE, Auburn; Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State; DJ Hayden, CB, Houston; DJ Swearinger, S, South Carolina.

Mel Kiper
  (1:22 PM)

Fallers: Mike Glennon, QB, NC State; Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor; Jordan Reed, TE, Florida; Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin; Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU; Chase Thomas, OLB, Stanford; Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State.

Josh (San Francico)

If Keenan Allan falls to 31 would the niners take him as best player available regardless of need?

Mel Kiper
  (1:23 PM)

Not necessarily. They took AJ Jenkins last year. They need help at DE, S. They could use a TE. There are other areas to concern themselves with. You added Anquan Boldin. Keenan Allan could slide into the second round.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Is Knile Davis worth drafting in the mid-rounds or do you see him as a 6th or 7th round pick, or possibly even going undrafted? Seems like a mini-version of Lattimore.

Mel Kiper
  (1:24 PM)

Couple of years ago, he had a great year. But he's had those ankle injuries. He's a big, strong, fast back. Athletic. He has to prove his durability and he has had the fumbling concerns. That could push him into Day 3.

David (Bethlehem, PA)

Why does everyone love Justin Pugh? He was awful at Senior Bowl practices - defenders treated him like a turnstile

Mel Kiper
  (1:24 PM)

He's an interesting player, because he was a LT in college who projects to OG/C in the NFL. He has great tape from his playing days. I think he's a second round pick. I never thought he was a first round pick, but he's a solid two.

John (Wisc)

Do you view Arthur Brown more as a ILB or OLB? Is he a better fit in the 3-4 or 4-3?

Mel Kiper
  (1:25 PM)

He can play in either scheme. He's attractive to 3-4 or 4-3 teams. He's very very instinctive. Great leader. Highly respected. I think he's a solid to mid two.

Bryan (Houston)

Chances Joekel or Fisher (prefer Fisher) is avail at #7 for Cards?

Mel Kiper
  (1:26 PM)

Joeckel is probably going No. 1. Fisher could go No. 5 to Detroit or 7 to Arizona. If Fisher is gone then Arizona could take Lane Johnson out of Oklahoma.

Mike (Atl)

Two under the radar guys that flashed some talent in the SEC: Bennie Logan and Corey Lemonier. What rounds do you see them going?

Mel Kiper
  (1:27 PM)

Lemonier goes in the 2-3 round and Logan goes in the fourth round.

Dexter (PDX)

If the O's are in first place on Sept. 5 are you going to Camden Yards or wherever the Ravens are playing that night?

Mel Kiper
  (1:27 PM)

I will be watching the Ravens play that night. I'm all football all the time. I love baseball. I love the Orioles. Love Buck. But I will be watching the Ravens.

AJ (Oakland)

Where is the best fit for B Mingo?

Mel Kiper
  (1:28 PM)

Mingo. The Jets. I think that would be a really good fit at No. 9.

jamara (Detrot)

Mel is "Ziggy" Ansah a fit for the Lions wit the 5th pick or would Fisher Luke Joeckel better fit for Lions

Mel Kiper
  (1:28 PM)

Fisher or Ansah would make sense. Or Dee Milliner. They'd all be good fits.

Jon (DC)

Are there any lighter, more athletic OT's in the mid-rounds that Shannahan may target?

Mel Kiper
  (1:29 PM)

David Bakhtiari, OT, Colorado; Vinston Painter, VT; Tanner Hawkinson, Kansas.

Mel Kiper
  (1:29 PM)

Xavier Nixon, OT, Florida.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Do you think the Ravens actually upgraded with Dumervil and Huff, at those respective postions?

Mel Kiper
  (1:31 PM)

Definitely. I think they upgraded. Dumervil is better than Kruger. Huff is better than Pollard. The Ravens know what they need in this draft, LB, S. But now they don't have as many needs. They have Webb coming off injury. They've made some good moves. People writing them off are making a mistake. They are prepared. They have a plan. They're patient.

David (Bethlehem, PA)

Is there a chance Lane Johnson is a better LT than Joeckel and Fischer? He looks a lot more aggressive than those guys. Not the same pass protector maybe?

Mel Kiper
  (1:32 PM)

He could. He has to improve his technique. He plays a little high and he has to improve his lower body strength. But he could end up in 2-3 years being the best LT in the draft.

Stewart (Phila)

Where dores Michael Mauti get drafted?

Mel Kiper
  (1:33 PM)

Hard call. Great kid. Tremendous player at PSU. But he had the multiple knee injuries. You hope for the best. He was a tremendous player. But you'd say late rounder, undrafted free agent. On ability, he's a second round pick. But the durability and injury concerns push him back.

luke (mn)

If your the Vikings your 2 #1's would be used on whom?

Mel Kiper
  (1:34 PM)

I would target Manti Te'o, if he's there, but I think he could go to Chicago. Cordarrelle Patterson and Kevin Minter are two I think I would look at. The perfect scenario is Tavon Austin drops to 23 and Te'o is there at 25. But that's not going to happen.

Alexander (Netherlands)

Who will be the second quaterback taken, assuming Geno Smith goes first?

Mel Kiper
  (1:35 PM)

Matt Barkley would be next. Ryan Nassib. EJ Manuel are next. There is a scenario where Manuel is the second one taken.

Tony (MN)

Where do you see DeAndre Hopkins going? Could he be possible at 23 or 25?

Mel Kiper
  (1:35 PM)

I think that's high. I think he's more of a late second, early to mid third. The late first is a little high.

Keith (Seattle, WA)

Where do you think Tony Jefferson will be selected in the draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:36 PM)

I would say, based on the fact that he didn't have a good combine, I thought he'd be a 2-3 round pick. But now I'd say Day 3.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Will Justin Hunter prove to be the best WR in this draft when we look back 3 years from now?

Mel Kiper
  (1:37 PM)

He could. He has a lot of upside. He'll be two years removed from the knee injury. He's a gifted athlete. He has speed. He has to put on some weight and put the injury around him. He will be interesting to see if New England at 29 takes him. He coudl go 23-29.

Quinn (Apopka)

If geno doesn't go int he first 10 picks do you see him falling to the mid 20's and who do you see trading back in to get him there?

Mel Kiper
  (1:38 PM)

Yeah. That's where we thought he could go all along. I thought a team trades back into the first to get him. 20-32 was where I thought he'd go, but every time you talk to people in the league, that's where they thought he should go, but they all thought he'd go in the top 10. There are two teams in the top 10 that could take him, Philly and Buffalo.

harry (miami)

LB Vince Williams came on during Senior Bowl week. Where do you see him getting drafted? Thanks...

Mel Kiper
  (1:39 PM)

I think he could end up being a 6-7 round pick. Right now he's my 11th highest rated ILB. Senior Bowl week really helped him.

Mel Kiper
  (1:39 PM)

It helped him become a draftable player.

Max (Draftsville)

Mel, where do you see margus hunt going? How much hype is there amongst teams out there now?

Mel Kiper
  (1:40 PM)

Hunt is an interesting guy. He's an intriguing developmental DE. He's raw. Inexperienced. His ball location skills leave something to be desired. He's late first, early second.

Alexander (Netherlands)

Which team is mostly likely to trade up into the first ten picks?

Mel Kiper
  (1:41 PM)

The team most likely to trade out of the top 10 is Cleveland at 6. Buffalo at 8. Jets at 9. Tennessee at 10. All of them could trade out. Even KC at 1 could trade out.

Mel Kiper
  (1:41 PM)

The team most likely to trade out of the top 10 is Cleveland at 6. Buffalo at 8. Jets at 9. Tennessee at 10. All of them could trade out. Even KC at 1 could trade out.

brad (campbell)

Charles James Cornerback of Charleston Southern where do you see him?

Mel Kiper
  (1:41 PM)

I actually think with his return ability and that he's a dime back, he has a chance to be a priority free agent who makes the team.

Mel Kiper
  (1:42 PM)

We'll have the first two rounds of the draft projection up on Thursday. A new Big Board going up tomorrow as well. See you next week!
