Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

Hey gang. Hope you're having a great day. What's on your mind heading into Martinsville?

Jeremy (GA)

Top 5 and a darkhorse? Mine is 48, 29, 15, 24, and 88 with 27 as darkhose.

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

Not bad picks. I'll go with JJ, Kahne, Bowyer, Kyle, Junior and my darkhorse is Almirola.

Rusty (Texas)

Terry, will Logano finish the race on Sunday.

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

If I have to guess, I'll say no, or at least not finish without some damage to his car.

Kyle (Pa)

Who do you see winning a championship first, Dale Jr. or Kevin Harvick?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

Now that's a good question. I don't know that I see either doing it, but I think Jr. is closer to it at the moment than Kevin is because Jr. has a better team. That could change next year when Harvick goes to SHR.

demon reading pa [via mobile]

Mark martin has martinsville . Witch driver has the remaining races left in the 11 toyota.

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

Vickers

The Dutchman (LA)

With Rowdy's 2nd place run last fall at Martinsville plus this being one of the few tracks where Rowdy hasn't won and the #18 team momemtum do you count Kyle as a favorite to win on Sunday?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I definitely think he has a chance to win.

Andrew (W. Kentucky)

Hi Terry, as cup champs Dale Jarrett an Bobby Labonte are proud JGR family and honorable Toyota men, why didn't JGR consider Dale or Bobby for the #11 in Denny's absence?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

First, Jarrett anmd Bobby didn't win their championships for Toyota. Second, one is long retired and the other has a full-time ride. Not an option either way.

Baseballman (Florida)

Will Stewart reviewing the last-restart Fontana video plus Mr. Penske's unprecendented comments on the matter cause Stewart to apologize to Joey at Martinsville for his embarassing comments?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

Absolutely no chance of that happening.

The Governor (Woodbury)

Double Double from In-N-Out or a Martinsville hot dog?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

In & Out every day and twice on Sunday. But I admit I have downed more than my share of Martinsville dogs. And when your at the track, In

Claudia (Western NY)

Do you know if Joey & Tony have spoken? How about Joey

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

Even Ryan Newman didn't know the answer to that yesterday, but I doubt it.

scott (denton,tx)

HEY terry how many martinvilles hot dogs can you eat or are you going to have any hot dogs LOL...

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Not there this weekend. Newt is there. I believe he has sworn off the dogs. I've had three and one meal before, but won't do that again. Tums required afterward.

Richie (TX)

Joey at 9th in pts. vs. #14 back in 24th isn't it Joey who should be complaining about Stewert?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

I don't know what that has to do with anything, but Joey is having a good year so far. By comparison, Dinger was 26th for that team one year ago at this point.

Kristin (NYC)

If I were Logano, I'd be watching my back for the next several races (particularly for Smoke).

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

This is the one where paybacks are common. I don't see that happening at Texas.

topgun fry (home)

How many races will #88 win ?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

I'll say two.

Saul (San Diego)

It is your your last meal on earth? In and out burger or a Martinsville Hot Dog?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

Neither one would make the cut for my last meal on Earth.

becka (virginia)

why doesn't the pit crew's uniforms match the car if the the car has a special paint scheme

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

It does sometimes, but it's expensive for some teams and hard to get completed for last-minute deals.

Daivon Augustin (Germantown, MD 20874)

Who would you take in there Prime Kobe Bryant Michael Jordan or Lebron James

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

I'm an old-school guy and covered many of Jordan's games (including his brief MLB career) but I'd have to go with Lebron.

Tyler (SD)

Hi Terry, will the media ask Stewart why he thinks he can block but he loses it when he gets blocked?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

He kind os answered that already. Tony feels blocking is OK at the plates tracks because of the yellow-line rule. But he dioesn't think it appropriate anywhere else.

Chuck (Cleveland)

Afternoon TB, good article. What happened to Keselowski after that last restart? He was in fifth at the green and finished 23rd with NASCAR threatening to black flag for not keeping minimum speed.

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

I'm not sure. He must have missed a shift or had a fuel issue.

becka (flordia)

is this true; rain at martinsville on friday, if yes bring rain gear ?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

Haven't seen the forecast, but early spring rain in not uncommon there.

Matt R. (Pittsburgh, PA)

Be honest, were you rooting for Darvish to complete the perfect game last night?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

You're right. I was. So was the crowd at Houston at the end. He was masterful last night. Yes, it was the lowly Astros, but I honestly think he could have shut down the Angels line up last night. Heartbreaking to lose it on a grounder right through his legs, but he smiled and handled it well.

Matt Jaeger (Chehalis)

How will the racing change with the Gen6 cars @ martinsville? I would think not much due to the shorter track or am I wrong?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Really doesn't make much difference on a short track. But the car is lighter, so it's a little easier to spin in the turns.

TG (PA)

From the various comments I have been reading from Denny, it sounds like he still doesn't like Joey at all and doesn't consider him to be a good driver or deserving to be in Sprint Cup.

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

That's true. But it's his right to think whatever he wants. They don't like each other. That's happened in NASCAR a thousand times.

RacingDMP (Charlotte NC Official Home of NASCAR)

You think Dale Jr has enough room on the jet to fit in a Grandfather clock? WAHOOOO GO DALE

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

I believe they ship those later, but he sure would like to have one. Heck, I'd like to have one. They're cool.

Tim (San Francisco, California)

I know people call for NASCAR to limit its schedule but if baseball teams can play 162 games a year and keep fan interest, why can't cars going 200 mph do the same for 36 races?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Totally apples and oranges. A better comparison is the NFL with 16 games.

Sam (Idaho)

I like Smoke, but is he one to talk about buying rides when he has Danica on his team?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

A fair point. But I love that Tony says what he thinks and doesn't hold back. Whether you agree or disagree, it's good for the sport instead of guys who just kiss up to sponsors and never say how they really feel.

Justin (The Racing Hub, Spartanburg, SC )

What is your impression of Darrell Wallace Jr as a driver?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

Really haven't seen enough of him on the track to make a fair assessment, but I like the way he handles himself off the track. I hope he gets a fair shot at this.

Jimbo F. (Tallahassee, FL)

What exactly has Logano done to not deserve his ride? The argument seems pretty ridiculous to me. He has won at all levels...

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

Agreed. It doesn't matter if you're Bill Gates' son, you still have to do the job on the track, and Logano did that in every series he raced. But he did get opportunities that other talented drivers might not get. That's life.

Jack (San Diego, Ca)

Are you going to attend any NHRA races this year? If so, I recommend the Big Go or the Fall Vegas race.

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

I will be at the race in Seattle and the season finale at Pomona. I hope to do one of two others, maybe Indy. I really enjoy covering the NHRA races.

Scott (Charlotte)

No names of course, but have you ever witness a good feud between sportswriters?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

More times than I can count. We're a surly bunch.

Jeremy (GA)

In a year from now, who will Ryan Newman be driving for? SHR? MWR? RCR? RPM? Elsewhere?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

I doubt it will be SHR. Options are limited. It all depends on sponsorship. I don't see a place for him at RCR with the Dillons on the horizon. And MWR is grooming Vickers.

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

I doubt it will be SHR. Options are limited. It all depends on sponsorship. I don't see a place for him at RCR with the Dillons on the horizon. And MWR is grooming Vickers.

Ron (OH)

I agree with Newman. Blocking isn't racing. It is just the chicken way to race. I can maybe see moving one lane over but not the 3 lane wide blocking Joey was doing all race. Not just to Stewart.

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Joey didn't take up three lanes on the last restart. I agree with Earnhardt Jr. Blocking is OK at the end of the race when you're trying to win as long as you give the other guys room to race. But blocking on Lap 20 isn't OK.

Jeremy (GA)

Have you notice sportwriters being biased towards certain drivers? For insrance, Ed Hinton hates Ryan Newman. David Newton loves Joey Logano. Mike Myiufu hates Kurt Busch. Marty Smith loves JJ.

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

I can assure you none of that is true. Fans think we hate a driver if we write something critical about him. That's our job. It has nothing to do with how we feel about him personally. For example, most people know I'm extremely critical of Kyle running so many NW races. But I have absolutely nothing against him. On the other side, we all have driver we respect and get along with well, but it doesn't mean we won't criticize them if we feel they did something inappropriate.

Kristin (NYC)

If Mike Helton were to hang up his sheriff's hat, who would/should take over?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

Probably Steve O'Donnell, a really bright guy and an extremely fair man who knows all the ins and outs of the sport.

Mike (SC)

Hi Terry, your opinions about cup drivers racing in NW and trucks is well known and I wondered how you feel about Harvick being the only cup driver entered in the truck race at Martinsville racing against a bunch of inexperienced young kids?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

I don't have a problem with a Cup guys running a lower series race every now and then. I'm sure many fans at Martinsville will enjoy seeeing how he does.

Dan (VA)

Yeley said there may have been rear end grease on the track where Logano lost control from Labonte blowing up his rear end the prior lap. That wasn't mentioned enough the last 10 days.

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Absolutely true.

Jeremy (GA)

So you think Newman may be out of Cup in 2014? Hard to believe a Daytona 500 with 16 wins cant find a ride in his prime

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

He will havea ride somewhere, but it might be a lower tier ride. It's really too early to know.

Claudia (Western NY)

Will Four-Time become Five-Time, or has the window closed?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

It's closing fast. I'd say he has this year and maybe a couple more to get it done.

Kristin (NYC)

I can't see Newman accepting a 2nd tier ride...you think he'd rather retire?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

No way. Newman has many quality years left.

Jimbo F. (Tallahassee, FL)

I am digging Loganos new attitude. It reminds me of Keselowski in his early years. Do you think Logano has been taking advice from his teammate regarding not taking crap from anyone on the track?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

Really good point Jimbo. This is exactly what Brad went through a few years ago when he got punted by Carl. I'm sure Brad has talked to Joey.

Ron (OH)

What percent of leaders blocking at the end of the race actually win the race? Not that many. So why do drivers keep doing it?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

One, it's legal. Two, the other option is getting passed at the end. And I've seen quite a few guys win a race by blocking.

Todd (Georgia)

Why do you think Sadler was not given the opportunity to drive the 11 car?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

Maybe they want him just to concentrate on the NW championship. JGR wanted Martin in the car for all five races, but Aaron's say no.

Kristin (NYC)

Kyle Busch is still hated by lot of people. But do you think the tide will turn as he gets older?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

That's typically what happens. It did for Earnhardt Sr. and Darrell Waltrip. Guys get older and they mellow out. And fans start to appreciate their accomplishments more. Gordon is a prime example of that.

Teri (So. Cal.)

Hi Terry! I like your chat room today. Looks beautiful and quite comfy. Who is the most underrated driver on the Nascar circuit?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

It's beautiful here today on the cliffs of Puget Sound. That's a tough question. I might go with Aric Almirola.

KB Nation (Global)

As JGR team leader will Mark Martin and Vickers be leaning heavily on Rowdy for GEN 6 setups and advice while Denny is out or will Denny be available at the tracks?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

I think Denny will try to attend some races, but Martin doesn't need advice from anyone.

Dave (oh)

You dont have 24 in your top 5? he only led close to 500 laps in both races at Martinsville last year lol

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

This always happens. No matter who I pick for the top 5, someone says, "How could you leave out so and so?" Jeff could run well this weekend without question.

Kristi (IN.)

It seems that even though Dale is leading pts. nobody really cares. Is that because he typically fades out of contention during the summer and people know it?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

I wouldn't say no one cares. When Junior does anything, people care. But this week we have all the other shenanigans with the feuds. And it's really early in the season. Whoever leads the standings doesn't mean much. As Junior said yesterday, more people will care when he wins.

Wally (Tenn.)

Ever since Rowdy Busch took care of business on Hornaday at Texas we haven't seen much from Ron. Do you think he lost his edge?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Ron is one of the all-time greats in the Truck series, and he still could win a race or two, but I think that ship has sailed.

Matt R. (Pittsburgh, PA)

Fall for any good April Fools jokes this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

Not this time. Eddie Gossage at TMS has nailed me on those a time of two in the past. I don't like April Fool's joke much. By the way, Tony Stewart is getting married and Joey Logano is the best man.

Laura (Huntington Beach)

Hi Terry, as Kurt Busch is one of the best short track racers and a Martinsville winner, do you think Outlaw will score another Top 5 on Sunday?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

It wouldn't surprise me. This is a track where driver skill plays a bigger part than some of the super speedway tracks. The big thing at Martinsville is saving your brakes, no easy task, but something the experienced guys learn to do.

Jimbo F. (Tallahassee, FL)

So now that Logano has come out in his Marty Smith interview saying he wont "get walked on anymore" do you think drivers are going to respect his new attitude or are they going to try and test him even more now by racing him harder?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

He's going to get tested this weekend. But for the most part, if he keeps running up front, drivers have to rspecvt him.

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

I'm out folks. Superb chat today with some great questions. Martinsville will be a hoot to watch. Join our race chat Sunday if you can. Have a great week. Peace.
