Greetings people. Nice to be with you. Hope you are having a lovely day.
With everybody saying that pass rush is a number one concern for Indianapolis, what do you think of Robert Mathis' potential to have a breakout year behind a D-line that's much improved in talent and depth?
He'll be better, I would think. But they need an additional rusher. And breakout year is a bad term -- it's for a guy who hasn't broken out yet, not a great pass rusher like Mathis.
The general consensus is that the Jags will select a QB within their first 2 picks...if they skip on Geno, do you think Nassib, Manuel, or Barkley would fit better within Fisch's offensive scheme?...assuming that Gabbert loses the starting spot.
Thats' the consensus? I think many of us think they won't take a quarterback at all, using this draft to build an infrastructure that will make it a better setting for a new quarterback next year. Back to your specifics -- I don't know enough about Fisch yet to know who or what fits him best. That's an advantage a new GM and staff have in a draft. Others don't necessarily know either.
PK- Did the Texans improve, regress or stay the same with the Quin for Reed swap? Quin's man to man skills will be missed but do you think McCain can fill that void adequately?
Boils down to this: Reed brings a swagger to the secondary and defense, and beyond Watt they lacked swagger down the stretch last year. Good ingredient to add in the short term.
What is your honest feel, do you think the Jags should/will take Geno Smith at #2?
I do not think they should and I do not think they will. All my opinion, not from anything I've gotten form the inside.
Paul, should we as Jaguars fans feel confident that David Caldwell will be fielding a talented enough team to not get blown out worse than last years squad? Is a hungry, but less proven player truly better than a proven and yet less hungry player? At the end of the day I don't see this team not having a top 5 selection next April. Am I being too pessimistic or is it just reality?
I need to see the draft. But I expect they'll make a minor jump at least. Four or five wins if they can get MJD going. I think they'l be hungry. But I don't think last year's team was not hungry.
How many more years do you think it will take for the Jags rebuilding process be complete and the team is competetive again? I know the Colts last year is an exception so i'm not thinking this is gonna be the year. But realistically how do you feel about it?
Do they land a good quarterback next year or - less likely, of course -- does Blaine Gabbert or Chad Henne make a big stride? If they have a QB, getting good quickly can happen. If not, it's slower for sure.
Hello from over the pond Paul. If the Titans roster stays healthy, Locker starts all 16 games and plays to his potential, what are you writing about him this time next season?
Nice to hear from you over there. I'd have to have your definition of plays to his potential. I think if everything went right for the Titans, they might compete for second place and a wildcard. Not sure who they'd be squeezing ahead of.
can titans add a decent physical presence to wr in the 2nd rd or is there going to be a run on wrs at the end of the 1st rd?
I don't think they'll be looking for a WR in that high.
How much do you expect DHB to produce? 1,000 yard season?
Wo, wo. A 1,000-yard season? That's giant for a guy who's done little and will be competing for catches with Reggie Wayne, T.Y, Hilton, a draft pick WR, Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen.
Do you see the Texans dealing out some of their compensatory draft picks to move up to grab guys they really like? Take WR in the 1st round. I've read Keenan Allen is one of Kubiak's favorite WR prospects, but some feel he may be gone by the 27th pick.
You can't deal a compensatory draft pick.
Can the Jaguars finally find the compliment/possible heir-apparent to Jones-Drew in this draft?
I think they expect Justin Forsett to be the complement. Heir apparent needs finding, but not with an early pick, I hope. Too many other needs, and too many backs found later to spend a high-value pick.
Where do the Colts need to improve most to transition from up-and-comer to legitimate contender in the AFC?
Cornerback and pass rush, I believe.
Been a while since you've shared what Kuharsky is listening to. The new Son Volt is growing on me.
Alabama Shakes is my most recent buy.
Do the Colts cut a NT once camp starts? If everyone is healthy they have 4 guys that can play the position and that means someone has to go .yes?
They can carry four if one is also capable of playing end and/or being inside in a four-man front in nickel. And Ricky Jean Francois can certainly do that. But if McKinney doesn't play well, he could be at risk, I suppose.
I think Joeckel, Fisher and Jordan for sure. Then I'd guess Ansah, Warmack, Smith. But I am not really believing Smith.
any chance matt elam becomes a jag with landry gone
If he lasted until their second-round pick, he'd be an excellent choice.
I know WR isnt the biggest need for the colts right now but i cant help seeing the glaring similarities between Robert Woods and Reggie Wayne. Any chance we snatch him in the 1st or move up in the 2nd for him?
I don't know about Woods. But I think the Colts would like to find a wide receiver in the first two days.
what do u think the titans will be looking to upgrade in the 2nd rd?
Depends on what they do in the first round. They won't go into the second round thinking, "We need to improve X here." They'll go in thinking, "We hope W, X, Y or Z" is still available at our pick. And those guys could be at a number of different positions.
Paul, do you think the Texans still have the luxury of just picking "best player available" or are the needs at WR, ILB, RT too great?
They aren"t thinking RT is a need, I don't think. And they aren't taking BPA if he's, say, a running back. They need to address WR and ILB at some point, for sure. But they aren't in position where either HAS to be a first-rounder.
Can't L.Jean give the same production has walter? Why waste a 1st rounders
They want BETTER production that they got from Walter. And someone who can be an heir to Andre Johnson.
Am I crazy to think that the Texans wont make the playoffs last year? Schaub was awful at the end of the year, we have little linebacker depth, and Foster just doesnt look as good as he did two years ago.
Is it possible they have a big dip? Sure. But Foster's got a better FB and guys on the right side of the line who should be better. They'll draft linebackers. And a bad finish for a quarterback one year doesn't ensure a bad season the following year.
The great Kuharsky's pick to win the college basketball national championship?
Hoping it's Syracuse. Thinking, like most of the country, it'll be Louisville.
What are odds I play with my buddy Andre
I'm going to go with zero.
It seems to me as a fan of this division for many years, that the window for the Texans is closing. I think they have great talent in areas, but their QB and go-to-WR are aging while the Colts are ready to take the torch
Reggie Wayne's aging too. If you dimiss Andre Johnson, are you dismissing Wayne? I expect it'll be a heck of a two-team race.
jerry gray say's titans could play 8-10 snaps in the 3-4 am i the only one who thanks they should learn to play a 4-3 before the try the complex stuff?
When I started reading your question, I was sure you were going to say, "Why not change all the way over?" Because a lot of fans crave such change for change's sake. I prefer your line of thinking. But if they can shift into it at times to mess with an offense, great.
i know alot of people are high on matt barkley coming to jacksonville 2nd round but is it me or does he remind you alot of gabbert when he came here
I think it's moot. He'll be gone in the first round.
Do the Colts add a guard or go with they now have . Also do they give Shipley a fair chance to start at center ?
I'd like to see another guard, but it's not a must. I can't see how Shipley doesn't have a crack to unseat Satele in camp, if he plays as well as he did and Satele doesn't settle in better.
Pollard can't cover a sleeping baby with a down comforter. Would it have been better to roll with Wilson and Griff and go into the draft in a relatively deep safety class?
They aren't going to ask him to cover. Of course offenses will try to dictate that he has to. What's the harm in adding him? It hardly guarantees they don't draft a safety. They should draft one to develop behind those guys.
If you throw me 100 frisbees, do I catch more or less than Jermichael Finley has receptions next year?
It's be a remarkable result: A tie!
I agree with you that a full back is usually not the best use of a roster spot, unless he can help out in the passing game and play some special teams. So does the Colts trading for a FB look like a good idea?
Traded a guy who won't make their team, so why not?
Do you see the titans signing another defense of player this free agency
Ruston Webster said in The Tennessean today they are likely done with free agency.
Bigger need for Colts? Receiver or Pass Rushing Linebacker?
I say B. The receiver is as much about the future as the present.
Interesting that I never read about ILB being a need for us. Conner and Angerer both in contract years and Angerer just had second foot surgery. Foikou gone to Titans. Any decent ILBs left on FA market?
It's not like Conner and Angerer are so good there is going to be a huge market for them. Freeman, those two and a late pick or a veteran who's out there post draft or even in camp and they are fine.
is it possible amano is a starting guard or center this year for the titans? any reason he is still on the roster?
Why does he need to be cut now. Old Titans GM Floyd Reese used to always wait to the last minute to make a move. His rationale: What if somebody gets in a car accident or falls down the stairs tomorrow? Could I suddenly need the guy I made a move with earlier than I had to? When they need Amano's money, they'll cut him. Until then, it hurts nothing to keep him. They don't have to pay him any of that salary until the season.
Do you think it's likely that the Colts trade out of the first round to a team looking to pick up a QB near the end of Round 1?
I don't see a lot of people trading up in this first round.
do you think tyson alalus and eugene monroes time in jacksonville are coming to an end with the new era i like them and think there decent but it sounds like there trying to replace them
What have they don't to indicate they want to replace Monroe? They have a blank at RT and need a second guy. And Alualu needs to show more, soon, or his time should be coming to an end.
There is word saying that Philly RB Dion Lewis could go to Indy via trade any truth to that?
Don't know. But is he somebody to get excited about?
WR is an area I hope the Jaguars address. I understand the many needs but after Blackmon and concussion riddled Shorts the options are weak. Can you see them going WR in the early rounds?
Not accounting for health, I like Blackmon-Shorts-Shipley. It's a lot better than they are at a lot of spots. I don't see a high pick on WR a year after Blackmon.
Have you ever thought of doing a live webcam chat and answer our questions on that
Do people want that? I could talk to my guy in Bristol and see if we could do it if you want it. I would think if you're sneaking in here at work, video and audio would be hard to pull off as opposed to typing. Chime in.
Are you more in the camp that the Colts misjudged the market and overspent or that Grigson identified his targets and paid the premium to get them signed?
Oh I think it was definitely B. But that can be a mistake in certain situations. If someone else wanted to overpay Erik Walden, you have to maybe let them. With some guys, like Gosder Cherilus, I think they loved him, valued him and went and got him.
Your opinion on whether to convert college OTs to Gs.....or to draft a college G instead?
Have to judge it player by player.
How do you think Jerry Hughes will do this season? Is he the presumptive starter? How many sacks would be a successful season?
No, he's third. Mathis and Walden are the starters. Hughes had four sacks last year. Eight would qualify as fantastic, I think.
Who is 1 key player for each team that will hurt the team the most if they got injured
Luck in Indy, Watt in Houston. Tougher choices in Jacksonville and Tennessee. How about Dwight Lowery for Jaguars and Jason McCourty for Titans.
Do you enjoy the soaring vocals of Reuben Studdard?
I do not. Does anyone?
Do you think Bill Polian will ever be able to stomach praising Ryan Grigson in one of his columns?
It's understandably a tough situation for Polian. But I also think it's not reasonable to suggest a GM with one year of experience should be listed as one of the NFL's top six talent evaluators.
At the end of the day, where do you think Freeney ends up? Last report is he wants 8.5 mil per year...
If he doesn't move off that number, he ends up nowhere.
Which team in the AFC South has the most hostile fans?
Hostile to whom? Me? Other fans? Their own team?
What do you think of this year and future "OUTDOOR" superbowls
It's not about outdoors, it's about cold weather. I think it's being made too big a deal of. People know there is not a blizzard in NY/NJ every day, right?
Given your love baseball would you ever want to cover that instead of football?
It's a young man's job. I am not a young man. Like to actually see my kid.
Appreciate your insight on Polian, PK. Wasn't just about that article, but I've noticed that he doesn't seem to mention the Colts much outside of praising the guys he drafted himself.
I suspect he steers away in general, trying almost to recuse himself.
Where do you see the Os placing in the AL East?
Worse than last year. No way they win all those one-run games.
Is Michael P your boyfriend? Why does all of his answers get replied to? #teacherspet haha
Honestly, I look at the questions, hardly at the name on the questions.
What's the latest on the texans giant jumbo screens they are going to put up
Supposed to be ready for the season as far as I know.
Hey Pauly. Prisco says hey. Please tell the sane Jag fans out there that the new GM is not gonna waste a 1st or 2nd rounder on a maybe QB. What about getting the kid out of AZ in like the 4th to push Gabbert.
Sane Jaguars fans know that, no? Insane Jaguars fans: what Frank said. There. I looked at the name on the question.
Can you host an AFCS fantasy league?
A four team league? Or a league where six teams don't get starting quarterbacks?
Is 2nd overall really too high for Warmack if he fits a need for the Jags and is a potential All-Pro at his position? Who cares if it's not a "premium" position if he could be the best and fills a glaring hole on the roster?
If they love him, I wouldn't have an issue with it.
Hearing anything about potential trade partners for the number 2 pick? Maybe Rams or Vikings with two 1s?
Coming up to get who?
Why didn't the Jaguars wait for Greg Roman? I think they will regret their lack of patience.
They fell in love with Bradley. He's going to be good. Roman, I worry, is too much a product of Harbaugh. Did Roman get Alex Smith good and Kaepernick ready, or did Harbaugh play a big role in it.
Do you see Tavon Austin falling to Houston in the draft?
Paul, are the Titans going to give me a new contract next year if I stay healthy and play to my potential this year? I know I've made mistakes...
Highly doubt it if Munchak is the coach.
Thanks for coming everyone. I enjoyed talking with you. Look for Twitter mailbag opportunity tomorrow. Enjoy the Final Four.
