Chat with KC Joyner

KC Joyner
  (4:00 PM)

Good afternoon! Let's talk some football!

Dirty Dutch Mantell (Not Zeb Colter)

Can you please make TO go away for good?

KC Joyner
  (4:01 PM)

It was kind of funny that they tried to act like this is the first time Dutch Mantell has been in a wrestling ring. And Father Time is taking care of making Owens go away for good.

mike (new jersey)

would eddie lacy be a reach at number 17 when the steelers pick?

KC Joyner
  (4:02 PM)

IMO, yes. Lacy is a good back but the RB depth in this draft is better than generally anticipated. Plus, his GBYPA numbers last year weren't appreciably better than the other Alabama RBs, so there is a reason to think he could be a system guy.

Brian Urlacher (Chicago)

Is my phone broken? Nobody is calling me.

KC Joyner
  (4:03 PM)

A lot of teams should be calling Urlacher. He's not what he used to be but he's still a good LB and deserves another shot. He'll get it between now and the start of training camps.

Josh (Baltimore)

Hey KC, which of the second-year QB's are most likely to fall victim to the "Sophomore Slump" in 2013?

KC Joyner
  (4:04 PM)

From a fantasy football perspective, probably all of them. RG3 has the injury to overcome. Teams are also going to start defensing the read-option a lot better. Add in the Colts offensive changes and Wilson likely not running the ball as much and they all will see at least a bit of a decline.

ricky martinez (coachella,CA)

what's your honest prediction on the raiders 2013 season?

KC Joyner
  (4:05 PM)

5-11. Having said that, they are correcting some of the cap woes that are holding them back, so the 2-4 year projection is likely a lot better.

Derrick (Garden City)

Hey KC, what does your metrics say about Tannehill? With better weapons, can he take a step forward?

KC Joyner
  (4:06 PM)

Just as was the case at Texas A&M, his BDR is too high. Having better weapons will help but unless/until he gets the BDR total back down to a lower level, the Fins are going to have win some games in spite of rather than because of him.

Scott (Chicago)

Have you seen this guy that Chris Jericho has to wrestle at WrestleMania? Fandango? I know he's a heel, but man, I want this guy out of the business as soon as possible.

KC Joyner
  (4:07 PM)

Hate to say it but that kind of reaction will keep him around. Rather like Owens in that sense.

B Mand (Sarasota, FL)

How do you feel about Josh Freeman? He seemed to finally turn the corner last year, then hit a slump at the end.

KC Joyner
  (4:08 PM)

I've got to wonder a bit about his conditioning. That seemed to be an issue two years ago and any time a player has a late season slump, that is one possibility that always comes to mind.

Aggie (TX)

Why are some people picking on Reggie Mckenzie? With the cap hell / no draft picks he inherited I think he's doing an excellent job. Next year the Raiders are 60 million $ under the cap/

KC Joyner
  (4:09 PM)

People bashed Bill Walsh at SF even when that team started showing progress early on. The Raiders are going to give him more than a short-term chance to succeed, so he'll get a shot to prove himself.

B Mand (Sarasota, FL)

Which FSU prospect are you the most excited about in this year's draft?

KC Joyner
  (4:10 PM)

Tank Carradine. Will be doing some tape reviews on him next week for an article that will run the week after, but what I've seen to this point says he's got first-round talent.

Randy (Wyoming)

KC Hello again from Wyoming. What kind of impact do you feel losing Dumerville will have on the Broncos? I mean he was a great pass rusher, but horrible against the run. Do they use Ayers/Free Agent or Draft?

KC Joyner
  (4:11 PM)

Always good to hear from Wyoming! Dumervil may be the best bull rusher in the NFL, so it's a loss from that perspective. Having said that, the draft has ample pass rush talent so Denver may not lose that much in on-field production depending on how their draft goes.

brian (Lead SD)

do you see any chance denver goes after A bradshaw with the money we saved on doomerville. He is a hard runner and if he could stay healthy he would be killer behind our line. any thoughts? and why is nobody going after him?

KC Joyner
  (4:12 PM)

RBs just aren't drawing much attention in general. Partly because it's a passing league, partly because teams realize the run game is more about building a good run blocking front wall than it is about RB talent.

Blaine (My Desk)

Where do you see Jonathan Banks going after bad showing at combine?

KC Joyner
  (4:13 PM)

Banks had a double-digit YPA last year, which was doubly surprising given that Darius Slay was in the 5-6 YPA range on the other side. Banks may not be as good as is generally thought.

Dragan (Chicago)

Mel Kiper's latest mock draft has Geno Smith going to the Eagles. I hadn't thought of that. Do you like that fit if they do indeed draft him?

KC Joyner
  (4:13 PM)

Like that fit a lot. Kelly may prefer a running QB but he's worked with pocket passers in the past and had success.

Steve Trow (Milan, Italy)

I was surprised more teams didn't go after Grimes. I thought he was playing like a genuine no.1 CB before he got injured. What are your thoughts on him as a player and whether he can still play to a high level?

KC Joyner
  (4:15 PM)

Have to wonder how much of the lack of interest in Grimes was due to the injury. It seems that concern is keeping the trade interest in Revis down a bit so that probably had just as much to do with Grimes. He's been a red-rated CB for a couple of years now, so if he plays to that level post-injury, it's a great add.

Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)

Who wins Brock Lesnar or Triple H at Mania on Sunday? I say Lesnar! Do you think losing Andy Levitre to Ten will hurt the Bills O-line? Or do you think we can find a replacement for him in the draft? Maybe J.Pugh or Barrett Jones etc....

KC Joyner
  (4:16 PM)

Wasn't sold on Levitre being a really good O lineman, so a draft replacement looks like it would be a lateral move at worst and could be an improvement. Got HHH winning at Mania, as too much of the build-up has him on the losing side.

Blaine (My Desk)

If I can squeeze this in, so with that being said on Banks, do you see Slay going higher than Banks since he has speed?

KC Joyner
  (4:17 PM)

Banks still probably goes higher than Slay if only because the perception difference of them headed into the draft was so high.

james (chicago ill)

do you think the bears should address the wide receiver position or take the best player available

KC Joyner
  (4:18 PM)

A good OC can playcall wide receivers open. They already have a dominant WR1 in Marshall and a potentially good WR2 in Jeffery. WR depth in this draft is pretty good, so there really isn't any overwhelming need for them to go WR if that player isn't the best available.

Bill (The Hill)

What is GBYPA? Thanks!

KC Joyner
  (4:19 PM)

GBYPA stands for Good Blocking Yards Per Attempt. It's a TFS metric that gauges how productive a ballcarrier is when given good blocking. That's the short form explanation.

KC Joyner
  (4:19 PM)

GBYPA is important because the big difference in RB production occurs on plays with good blocking. No one is very productive on a consistent basis on plays with bad blocking (league average is roughly 1.5 yards on those plays).

Jake Browne (Denver)

Where do you see John Abraham ending up? The Patriots seem to love bringing in guys who can get after the quarterback on a one year deal.

KC Joyner
  (4:20 PM)

That sounds like a really good fit, especially since NE had some late-season issues with pass rush this year.

Brian (Arizona)

You know U cant leave todays chat without predicting a few of the top matches at Mania? Does Punk end the streak? Does Swagger become the new World HW Champion?

KC Joyner
  (4:21 PM)

Punk will not end the streak (and seeing him lose will make my youngest son very happy). Swagger wins the WC. Cena wins by making some type of heel move and thus makes the biggest turn since Hogan.

Jeff (Virginia Beach, VA)

Had Kirk Cousins been available for trade this offseason, what do you think he would've fetched on the market? Do you think he's a starting-caliber QB?

KC Joyner
  (4:22 PM)

He would be an improvement for about 5-8 teams but I'm not sold that he would be a long-term improvement for them.

Darrell (Washington)

What round, and to who, do you see Marquess Wilson going? How much did his turmoil at WSU hurt his draft stock?

KC Joyner
  (4:23 PM)

If that was the only issue with Wilson, it probably wouldn't have hurt his stock that much but there are other issues as well. Combination of those and the WR depth will keep his draft stock lower than it could have been under optimum conditions.

Ax and Smash (Demolition)

The arms race between the 49ers and Seahawks has become fascinating to watch. Is Carson Palmer going to get destroyed in the 6 divisional games in the West? The Rams have a pretty good defense too.

KC Joyner
  (4:24 PM)

The NFC West is becoming like a combination of Demolition, The Road Warriors and a Stan Hansen/Bruiser Brody tag team. Palmer will struggle in those games but he has a slew of other games against weak secondaries, so he'll be a hit/miss fantasy QB next year.

Bryon.S (South Buffalo,NY)

KC, The Bills supposedly want too run a Up Tempo West Coast style offense! So, Which of these WRs would you think would be the best fit to play in this offense and also compliment CJ Spiller and Stevie Johnson at the same time? Tavon Austin or Corrdarrelle Patterson?

KC Joyner
  (4:25 PM)

Austin would be a better fit than Patterson, as his route running skills are better and he's a perfect fit as a slot WR. Patterson is a go route TD waiting to happen and would be a better fit for a vertically-based offense (he'd be a great add for the Arians offense).

Blaine (My Desk)

What do my Falcons need in the draft to get over the hump and finally make a run? And thanks for answering my questions!

KC Joyner
  (4:27 PM)

Better run blocking. Turner did lose some speed last year but he also had to deal with some really subpar blocking. Losing Clabo (assuming he doesn't re-sign with Atlanta) won't help that situation.

Merle (Colorado)

Do you think Dennis Allen gets another year after the house cleaning in Oakland? Or is he just keeping the seat warm for someone else?

KC Joyner
  (4:28 PM)

McKenzie knows a campaign like last year isn't a fair way to assess how a coach is. Allen gets another year as long as the team keeps playing hard for him.

Quinn (Apopka)

would drqafting geno #2 overall set the Jags back in terms of rebuilding.

KC Joyner
  (4:29 PM)

In one sense, no, because the Jags have to upgrade at QB (Gabbert is simply not good enough to be a starting QB and Henne is a fill-in player). In another sense, they have a lot of areas they need to upgrade and Smith may not be worth that high of a pick.

Aaron (Palm Springs)

Does Bruno Sammartino come out for 1 last match and defeat both Ryback and Mark Henry? LOL! If you were to start an O-line? Can you please tell us who you would plug in? LT/LG/C/RG/RT!

KC Joyner
  (4:31 PM)

That would be an awesome way to get Bruno over! Building an O line is all about making sure the line doesn't have a big weakness. Would probably start with the tackles (LT first) but then go center after that, as centers are too often a weak spot that opposing teams can exploit.

Mike Rice (Formally Rutgers)

I thought a coach/manager could kick people. Did my year's of watching Bobby The Brain Heenan and and Master Fuji lead me wrong?

KC Joyner
  (4:31 PM)

This is the kind of comment that only makes it through during Wrestlemania week.

luke (mn)

what WR best fits what Minnesota needs?

KC Joyner
  (4:32 PM)

Austin would be a great replacement for Harvin. The Vikes bigger need is at vertical WR and Patterson would be the best fit from that perspective.

Sarah (Tampa)

Which would be better for Miami to solve their OT issue: trade a #2 pick for Albert or trade a #2 pick and their #1 to move up to draft Lane Johnson.

KC Joyner
  (4:33 PM)

The first option is the better play. Just can't see moving two picks to get an O lineman if they can fill that spot with one pick. Plus the FA market still has some quality OT options, so they may be able to address that positions there.

Greg (PA)

So Paul Heyman goes 0-2 on Sunday? Man I love having him back. WWE needs more Managers. Who wins the Shield or Sheamus/Big Show/Orton?

KC Joyner
  (4:35 PM)

Heyman is great - my youngest son absolutely hates him. WWE needs to get back to its roots and get more managers like they had back in the day when they had Blassie, Albano and The Grand Wizard.

Craig (Braintree, MA)

The Vikings officials say that it wasn't because of any non-football reasons for trading Harvin. If so, why? Did they feel like they needed more of a receiver type?

KC Joyner
  (4:36 PM)

He was a RB playing WR. He had very few stretch vertical passes thrown his way (very low single digits if memory serves correct) and was very good but not great on medium depth routes. They simply need someone who can produce on dink/dunk passes and give them more downfield productivity (they were horrible in that area last year).

Darrell (Washington)

Where will Clabo wind up? Back in ATL?

KC Joyner
  (4:37 PM)

Gut says it will be back in Atlanta but a lot of teams need upgrades on the O line so it's not like he will lack for a market for his services. Having said that, the Falcons can make a Super Bowl run this year, so that could be a factor in his going back to Atlanta.

Adam A (Washington)

Does FANNNNDAAAAANNNNNNGOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH! Get his 1st victory on the grandest stage of them all? OVER Y2J?

KC Joyner
  (4:38 PM)

I hate that guy but they are likely going to put him over. The key will be if he can do that while not having the fans chant "YOU CAN'T WRESTLE".

chris (boston)

who does Stedman bailey compare most to in the nfl?

KC Joyner
  (4:39 PM)

Kenny Britt and Miles Austin come to mind from a talent perspective. Bailey had great numbers last year, even better than Austin's numbers.

Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)

Does Ziggler come out and use his money in the bank briefcase at Mania on Swagger(if Swagger wins?)? What are your thaughts on the Bills signing of Kevin Kolb?

KC Joyner
  (4:40 PM)

Kolb can be a quality starter, so it's a good move from a talent perspective. Haven't given any thought to Ziggler (just am not sold on his ability to get over).

Aggie (TX)

Should Dallas go after one of the RTs on the free agent market? Clabo, Winston, ... are available and should come relatively cheap.

KC Joyner
  (4:41 PM)

The OT FA market probably plays out after the draft, as teams will want to wait to see if they can address that need at a lower cost than via the FA market.

jack (new york)

which WRS can fit into todd haleys offense in Pittsburgh?

KC Joyner
  (4:42 PM)

Hopkins, Woods, Austin, Hunter and Allen would all be solid fits for the Steelers.

Dennis (Seattle)

Do you think Giacomini is still a weak link in the Seattle OL that PC/JS should look into upgrading? I thought he improved later in the year.

KC Joyner
  (4:44 PM)

Still got him pegged as a weak link, but not one that is such that he has to be replaced. Might be a situation where they acquire some OL prospects and see if that late season improvement led was a mirage or the real thing.

Craig (Braintree, MA)

Will Seattle use Harvin in their backfield as opposed to WR?

KC Joyner
  (4:45 PM)

They'll move him around, as he can be quite explosive as running back. Plus, they'll want to showcase his skills to help justify the trade.

Al (Wausau, WI)

KC, if the Vikings go WR with one of their first-round picks (as they should), what position do you think they should target with the other first-round pick? DT? LB? CB? Somewhere else?

KC Joyner
  (4:46 PM)

Would say CB but the DT prospects at that level are probably rated higher.

nick (pennsylvania)

who do keenan allen and Robert woods remind you of?

KC Joyner
  (4:47 PM)

Hard to say because both of them have talent levels that are reminiscent of very good WRs and yet their productivity levels don't match their talent level.

Bryon.S (South Buffalo,NY)

Team Rhodes Scholars/Bella Twins or Tons of Funk/Funkadactyls? Does Kharma make her return and squash the Bella twins? Alan Branch a starter for the Bills or a backup? OH AND YOUR WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KC Joyner
  (4:48 PM)

The Wrestlemania-based questions seem to be popular, as they keep coming through. Bellas get squashed, Funk team wins. Branch is a starting caliber player (really good signing by Buffalo).

B Mand (Sarasota, FL)

Who is a good comp for Kelce? I think he can be a pretty solid TE in the pros.

KC Joyner
  (4:49 PM)

Can't say I've seen a lot of tape on Kelce. Having said that, a lot of teams could use upgrades at TE, so it's likely we'll be seeing a lot of him in the future.

john (virginia)

is tavon Austin a slot only receiver?

KC Joyner
  (4:50 PM)

It's hard to place him on the outside since he's only 5-9 and 174 pounds. He couldn't play split end because he'd get overpowered on run plays. Could possibly play flanker and could be moved to the slot on 3 WR plays.

Al (Wausau, WI)

KC, do you think the Vikings would be able to get a decent MLB in the second round of the draft (I think they draft at #52 there)?

KC Joyner
  (4:52 PM)

The ILB/MLB position may be perfectly valued in that there aren't any dominant candidates there (unless one considers Te'o or Ogletree NFL-caliber dominant) and yet there are plenty of NFL caliber starters. Terrific second-round value, in other words.

Martin (NYC)

What do you think my chances are of becoming GM of the Lions next year?

KC Joyner
  (4:53 PM)

Got a good amount of faith in the Lions ability to get back to solid record, so the Detroit GM probably won't be available next year.

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

How do you see David Wilson doing this season, both real world and fantasy?

KC Joyner
  (4:54 PM)

The big question is what is his upside carry/reception-wise? Got him pegged as a 275-300 carry/reception player at best, so he'll likely be a high-end RB2 in fantasy football.

RC (New Orleans)

How good is the Kenan Lewis signning for the Saints? What is the wwe doing with Dolph Ziggler?

KC Joyner
  (4:56 PM)

Lewis had great YPA numbers with Pittsburgh. He won't equal those numbers with NO, as the Saints defense/offense combination precludes that from happening, but even if he posts a 6-7 YPA in NO, it will be a great move for them. No idea on Ziggler and tend to turn the channel when he is on TV.

john (portage wisconsin)

what you think packers do with their first round draft pick? also is brian urlacher good fit for gb?

KC Joyner
  (4:57 PM)

Mel Kiper has them taking Lacy and that would be a very good upgrade for their run game. Also have been on board with GB taking Johnathan Franklin in a later round, as he could have a perfect skill-set fit for the Packers offense.

B Mand (Sarasota, FL)

Which likely top 10 pick has the most bust potential?

KC Joyner
  (4:58 PM)

Probably Lotulelei, if only because of the possibility his health issues recur.

KC Joyner
  (5:00 PM)

Well, it's been a fun chat (good to see all of the WM questions) but it's time to get back into the tape room. Quick note before heading out - the TFS material is always posted on Twitter @KCJoynerTFS. Thanks again for all of the questions, hope you all enjoy Wrestlemania!
