Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the Friday chat. Not a huge fight weekend but an interesting one. There's FNF tonight and then a very interesting card Saturday on HBO2 -- the Top Rank show from Macau, China with a couple of world title bouts and the pro debut of Zou Shiming, which is a big deal. Plus we've got a whole ton of big fights coming in the next couple of months, so read all the new stories and blogs and check out the schedule and let's get to it.
If Brandon Rios doesn't get an immediate rematch with Alvarado, who is a likely opponent for him?
He is not getting an immediate third fight with Alvarado. Arum was very clear (and I agree with him) that both will have at least one interim bout first, maybe two. Let them do something else next and win or lose, the third fight will always be there. That said, not a clue at this point who Rios would fight next. He'll take a decent break and I wouldnt expect to see him until the fall.
Hey Dan, If Rigo beats Nonito pretty good, will you put Rigo on your pound per pound?
Let's see how the fight goes but if it's a clear win, sure he would merit inclusion in my top 20.
Why is Broner moving up two weight-classes to fight Malinaggi when there are so many attractive fights at 140?
Most of the top 140s are tied up at the moment and there is nothing available of note for Broner at 135. So why not? He'll make good money for a fight he and his team believes he will win. Schaefer told me that if Broner wins he would certainly be open to coming back to 140 for some of the big names there. But right now none of the top 140s are available to fight Broner in June -- Garcia, Judah, Khan, Peterson, Matthysse are all scheduled with other bouts.
Who else in the middleweight division wants a piece of Gennady? Macklin deserves props. Will a victory change anything for Golovkin?
I dont know what you mean by "change anything" but I hope GGG-Macklin gets finalized. I am told there are some issues still holding it up but I am hopeful they will be worked through. It's the right fight for both guys.
I have to honest Dan, when I saw Berto and Thurman were fighting on the same card and not each other I was less than excited. Is this way the GBP/Showtime deal is expected to go?
Why would Thurman fight Berto now? He is not ready for that and the matchups on the card are solid. I have no issue with Berto-Soto Karass. That will be a good fight and same with Thurman-Chaves. I believe that down the road we might see Berto against Thurman though.
I've read that Pulev said his team has had talks with Haye about the June 29th date. How realistic of a chance do you think this possible match-up is of being made? Considering Pulev is 1 fight away from a mandatory vs Wlad.
It's a fight being discussed and would be a solid one. Pulev would be well paid and you cant sit around and wait forever for Klitschko. Same goes for Haye. So I hope it gets done but I will believe it when I see it.
For being so much older than almost everyone else starting at the pro level, do you think it's such a disadvantage to Zou? Or do you think he'll be like Rigo and get a smooth ride to a interim title shot against a big name champion?
I think the age hurts Zou more since he is even older than Rigo when he turned pro and so much smaller. But I believe Zou will be moved very quickly and as long as things go smoothly I can definitely see him fighting for a world title inside 10 fights.
Berto-Soto Karass could be a pretty entertaining fight with lots of action plus Soto Karass can really fight.
Agreed. Considering the beating Berto took in his last fight with Guerrero, it's a reasonable return fight and probably fun.
What's next for Gabe Rosado? He looked game, but outmatched and outsized against GGG, but I still think he's a tremendous fighter.
Somebody hasnt been reading the updated daily ESPN.com boxing schedule but he is on the May 4 Mayweather-Guerrero PPV vs. J'Leon Love.
D$ - Cotto says 3 fights and he's out - Canelo, GGG, and Chavez - needless to say 2 of those being Mexico v. PR - what do you say??
There is basically zero chance he faces Golovkin (a destructin) and no way he faces Chavez either given the promotional differences at this point with TR. Canelo-Trout winner is certainly possible.
What do you think about a Martinez v. Geale unification match in the Fall?
Unlikely since Sergio is probably having a rematch with Chavez.
Chavez is calling for Golovkin. Can he push Arum into that like Canelo with Trout?
He can call all he wants but I'd be rather surprised if that happened. No way Arum sacrifices Chavez to GGG.
Duane Ford thinks Mike Rice teaches his players a good basketball lesson.
Pay the man, Shirley!
Dan do you know if the vazquez jr fight will be stream in top rank.com. here in Puerto rico we do not get unimas and I am looking for options to watch the fight
TR is streaming undercard fights but I am not sure if that is part of the stream. It will be on UniMas in the US on tape delay at 11 pm ET/PT on Saturday night.
Dan, With Bob Arum talking about Manny Pacquiao's next fight being in Asia, will Manny be in attendance in Macau on Saturday? Thanks
Manny was originally supposed to be there but his adviser, Mike Koncz, told me in Las Vegas last week that because of other things scheduled politically he would not be attending.
Who do you think has the better prospects from London 2012 Top Rank or Golden Boy?
Top Rank signed one of the best Americans (Ramirez), the bext Mexican (Valdez) and the best Puerto Rican (Verdejo). Golden Boy signed Ogogo from the UK and works with Haymon's guys but does not have them on paper. I give the nod to Top Rank.
enjoyed the brief Rios chat, he seems like a no-BS kind of interview who answers questions for the sake of actually answering the question.
Brandon interviews like he fights. Let's it all hang out. As a writer, that is refreshing and appreciated. He's great to talk to.
The atmosphere in Mandalay Bay was intense last week. That was easily the most electric fight I have been to. How does that compare to some of the great crowds?
It was very, very good but being honest I can't put it close to my top atmospheres. Fights I've covered like Mayweather-Hatton (all-time No. 1 atmposhere), Froch-Bute, Trinidad-Joppy, Trinidad-Mayorga, Oscar-Vargas, Lewis-Tyson, Pacquiao-Margarito at Cowboys Stadium -- fights like that and others trump it for sure.
Hey DTM, last chat before 'Mania 29. Who you got, Punk or Taker?
Undertaker. As usual, having a few people over for WrestleMania on Sunday night! I am psyched for it. Good card. Three epic fights -- Taker-Punk, HHH-Lesnar and Rock-Cena rematch. I will be live tweeting!
Hey Dan, I was excited to see Angelo Santana returning to Shobox next week only too see he lost his opponent. Any news?
As far as I know his opponent is Carlos Cardenas and there has not been a change unless something just happened.
Is Cotto under contract to Golden Boy? I thought he was working with them on a fight by fight basis which would allow him to fight whoever he wants?
My understanding is that it is fight by fight.
Any word on Pirog is he due back soon or still recovering from his injury?
Still recovering and had a setback. He is out for awhile.
Angulo seems to be a different fighter after leaving detention. Fights smarter, albeit his natural inclination is still to bang. What do you think about Angulo/Lara? 50-50 type fight?
Very, very tough style match for Angulo. I am surprised his team accepted the fight.
Make sure to check out my interview with Tim Bradley: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9132840/timothy-bradley-getting-attention-deserves
This card in Macau illustrates why GBP can't touch Arum in the promotion game. Arum understands how to build attractions. Golden Boy expects everything to fall into their lap.
I dont think that is entirely fair but Arum is a promoter at heart and has a huge thing going with this China card.
Whatup Danito? Have u ever made it rain in a strip club?
Do coins count?
Dan, you forgot Martinez-Chavez in your list of atmosphere's, almost 20K fanst there.
Very true, was a great atmosphere.
WrestleMania 29 is a real good card! Looking forward to your live tweet program.
Duke went down and the Yanks are in for a tough year; good thing you have boxing to hold down the fort! :-)
True. Was nice to see Yanks get win No. 1 last night with a vintage Pettitte outing and Mo for the save.
How awesome was Rios v Alvarado, my GF's parents became fight freaks, bragged to everyone the next day at Easter dinner about how awesome the fight was!
What's your take on the Transnational ranking system?
Just another batch of rankings that will have no teeth. But good luck to them.
Hey Dan - I'm hoping it's a typo. Did I see James Toney on the schedule?
Yes. Not a typo. Sad.
Check out my look at the big China card please: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9136769/zou-shiming-holds-key-boxing-china
I have to give 50 Cent credit for trying. Could have easily folded when Floyd backed off as partner. Saw him last night at the broadway boxing card front and center cheering his fighters on.
Dan, do you think the 5th Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight is going to get done?
Watched the Alvarado vs Rios fight with my wife and even she was excited! She kept asking me how are these guys still standing? Great fight!
30 days in May was real coo. What u think of Floyd saying HBO treats fighters like "hoes"?
Nothing Floyd says surprises me. He forgets the tens of millions HBO paid him for live fights and the hundreds of millions he earned on HBO PPV in large part because of HBO's marketing and promotion and the series it created for him, 24/7. Seems a bit ungrateful and without any class as it pertains to a company that significantly helped him become who he is.
Reeling in Oscar's emotions would really help Golden Boy's image.
You're right. He hurts himself badly with the idiocy he tweets.
Dan, whom are you most impressed with, the salesman that sold Kid Chocolate his front tooth, the one who sold Hopkins his Bentley, or the one who sold condoms to Adrien Broner?
Dan - have you ever been to a Wrestlemania? One of my ambitions.
I attended WrestleMania I at MSG in the mid-80s with my father. Was a blast. I was about 14.
Hey Dan what is your opinion on the PED piece written by Nigel the other day?
I thought it was reckless and I do not agree with it or endorse it any way.
Mayweather seemed like kind of a pig with having tons of strippers in his suite and saying women are like cars... but my bigger question is does he pay for all of that? As in the alcohol, the drugs, the women, the hotels, the food, and the flights? Even for someone with his income that isn't very sustainable. He has to put his kids through school too.
Floyd spends like most of us take in air.
Dan why is showtime showing the khan fight taped and not live in the afternoon?
Not a clue. Seems pointless. Anyone that interested in Khan is going to already know the result.
How does Rios go thru war after was and his face barely marks. Can you think of a similiar style fighter who didn't mark up at all?
BHop has had like 50-plus fights and never been cut.
Almost a year since the Pacquiao-Bradley judging debacle. Has there been any serious talk about reforming the way boxing is judged?
funniest thing i heard a while on jim rome was floyd saying his number one word to best describe him is loyal? To who, his dad? best friend? network? promoter? Exactly who is he loyal to?
Actually, Floyd has been loyal to a lot of people. His most inner circle and corner has the been the same for many years -- Haymon, Leonard Ellerbe, Roger, Rafael Garcia, Nate Jones. They've been with him forever.
We'd like to formally announce that SHO now stands for the Schaefer-Haymon Operation. Thank you.
30 Days in May was boring. HBO does a way better job with 15 minutes than Sho Sports does with 1 hour.
My understanding is that Showtime bought that docu already produced the way Mayweather wanted it done. That was one of the many reasons HBO did not wind up making a deal with Floyd, because it did not want to be forced to air something it had no control over.
What is the purpose of Andre Ward attempting to stay at 168? He's cleaned out the ENTIRE division? At least at 75, there's one or two attractive names.
If a guy wants to stay at a weight where he is comfortable so be it. Besides, he is not staying at 68 forever. Everyone knows and Andre says he will soon be moving up.
After watching Rabchenko on TV for the first time, I wouldn't mind seeing him in an Angulo-type action fight here in the states.
Agreed. He is a rugged brute guy without a lot of skills. But fun.
Dan any indication on the ticket sales in Macau? Are there many boxing fans there?
According to the casino as of several days ago they had sold about 75% of the tickets. It holds probably about 15K for a fight.
If Pac fights in Asia is that something JMM would do or is the plan for a new opponent?
I believe he would go to Asia for the right deal. You go where the money is being offered.
DTM when did you know you wanted to be a sports writer ?
Probably around my junior year of college when I was covering sports for the college newspaper. I had been doing it since I was a sophomore and thought this would be a cool job and I just kept pursuing it. I pressed hard for an internship in the sports department at the local newspaper, which was big. After school, I took a job freelancing at a local paper near where I lived and was doing all sorts of stuff for them, basically whatever they wanted, including helping out in the sports department. When a clerk job opened in the sport department soon after, they offered it to me and I took and yadda, yadda, yadda, now I cover boxing for ESPN.
Mr Dan, What is next for T Bud Crawford? I'd love to see him match up with Broner.
Forget the Broner fight. TR + GB = No fight. But Crawford probably will go back to his more natural 135 and do damage down there.
I found it highly amusing that people's faces and HBO's logo were censored out yet their aired nudity.
Was sorta petty.
I was really impressed with Alvarado's corner. They kept multiple cuts under control, gave Alvarado great advice and kept him on his game plan. Those guys deserve some credit too.
Absolutely. Henry Delgado has been with Mike as a trainer his whole career. And they did a very smart thing to bring in Rudy Hernandez to work with them. Rudy is a class guy and a very experienced and calm guy in the corner. For those who dont know, he is the older brother of the late Genaro Hernandez and was his trainer also.
DTM, is it true that Duane Ford scored Rd 2 10-8 for Rios? While he rocked him, I didn't think it was that one-sided to be 10-8, what Ruslan did to Bradley in Rd 2 could've been 10-8 but not that, thoughts?
Yes, that is true and I dont see it
As the "Boxing Guy" around my friends and coworkers, I'm always defending boxing and explaining things like, No, boxing is not dead, look at the past month and upcoming month's fight schedule. Do you find yourself defending the sport regularly?
No, I've stopped defending it. It doesnt need defending. If people want to be ignorant let them be.
Do you think Floyd's PPV sales will diminish now that Pacquiao lost? I think a lot of people were interested in both guys because of the other one and the possibility of them fighting.
Totally agree. With the spector of that fight no longer hanging over every fight they have I think it will hurt the PPV numbers, especially if they are not fighitng a big big name.
any idea if the Lopez-Maidana Angulo-Lara its a done deal?
I dont think either are signed but both are agreed to and are happening.
Dan, Jlove team must have confidence with their fighter. Putting him against Rosado is a bad decision. Thoughts.
Big test for J'Leon.
What was your score for Alavrado vs Rios 2, I missed all you tweets as I was camping in yosemite and had no reception and no sources.
I had Alvarado winning 116-112, same score as Lederman, although we disagreed on a couple of rounds.
Hey Dan two big Fight of the Year Canadidates who has the edge...... Alvarado v Rios 2 or Bradley v Ruslan
I lean to Rios-Alvarado right now with Bradley-Provodnikov 2nd.
dan any update wether hbo has made the decision to broadcast the froch vs kessler figt live or will it be taped?
As of now it looks like it will be on tape, which if so, I do not agree with at all. That's a worse decision than Showtime airing Khan-Diaz on tape.
Dan, how did you score the Erdei-Grachev fight? I thought Erdei should have got the nod.
I thought Grachev edged it out. He was busier and obviously a heavier hitter.
That Golovkin kid is scary good! Now I understand why a lot of fighters are avoiding him.
Hey Dan, my dad said he read somewhere that Floyd has a rematch clause with Guererro. Is this true?
Yes, I am told Floyd has a rematch clause. Standard procdure for a fight like that.
Who do you Alvardo fights this fall, assuming the rematch is not next? I would love to see Alvarado or Rios, vs the big 3- Manny, JMM, or Bradley. I think all would be entertaining fights.
I dont know who Alvarado fights next but I think Top Rank will look to bring home to Denver, where he will draw. TR had success selling Stevie Johnston fights in Denver, which is an underrated city for boxing.
If Floyd/Guerrero does less than a million PPV buys do you see Floyd running back to HBO?
Who knows? But if the fight does not top 1 million it is simply a failure.
I'm just curious - do you have any idea how much money the international broadcast rights for a major fight tend to go for? I guess it must vary for every fight, but I was wondering if it's usually in the thousands or the hundreds of thousands (or more), any idea?
For huge fights international TV rights generate seven figures overall. The promoter sells the fight country by country. They might get $50,000 in one place, $10,000 in another and $100,000 in another. You keep adding it up for 100-plus countries and it adds up.
Dan, after my absence last week, I figure it is time to give the Freaks (including Keith H. in Seattle) what they want. Thus, NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you see GGG live, do his punches make that heavy sound that say a guy like Julian Jackson or Gerald McClellan make?
Not quite like that. They have a very crisp, thwack! sound to them. He's a very sharp puncher not not what I consider a knockout artist, the Ishida KO notwithstanding.
Dan, did you just stick up for Floyd??? Now what are the morons that think you hate on Floyd gonna say?
Dan, you think Wilder has finally stepped up a bit by taking on Harrison?
Is it a step up? Yeah, sure. But if the staircase was 25 steps it's like two steps. I fully expect Wilder to knock Harrison out cold and do it rather early.
Thank you, Dieter...
Pretty amazing how HBO turned the tides on all the bad outside-the-ring news with two epic inside-the-ring battles. Because that's really the only place this sport matters.
When the fights kick ass it shoves all the other stuff to the side.
prediction for the viloria fight?
I think you have to like Viloria but Estrada gave Roman Gonzalez a very, very tough fight on Viloria's last undercard. I expect it to be a very solid fight whoever wins.
hey is there any news about James Kirkland?
No. I would imagine he is in class at the WWSOBB.
Dan, predictions for this week for HBO2's fights?
I think Zou takes care of Valenzuela in his debut. I like Viloria and I am torn on the Martinez-Magdaleno fight but I will go with Magdaleno on points for the mild upset.
Who do you think has the higher potential ceiling? Rigondeaux or Gary Russell?
Winky Wright Schook of Boxing Business.
Danomite, seems like no one is really mentioning the fact the Rigo has only 11 pro fights. I think the experience is the difference in the fight...reminds me of Reid (very Talented) getting in over his head vs Trinindad. Your thoughts?
Cant compare Rigo to Reid. Rigo had 400 amateur fights and won two gold medals. He is vastly experienced. Reid won a gold medal but did not have anything close to that amateur career. Also, he was moved fast not because of his experience but because of his bad eyelid that everyone knew would not hold up. He had a short window to make money and do something. So he was rushed.
When you started covering boxing, did you learn the ins and outs of the business yourself or did you have formal training?
I learned from experience and by asking a lot of questions and having some great people in the business show me the ropes.
Who's the grestest trainer not named Anglo Dundee?
Emanuel Steward and Eddie Futch.
What is Mrs. DTM's occupation?
She's a newspaper managing editor.
What do you think when Zou says he wants to break the record of winning a world title the fastest? Least amount of pro fights I mean by that.
It is unlikely. The record I believe is in a third pro fight.
Dan, I think it's great that HBO is putting their viewer numbers out front & center now. I don't recall that being pushed as much before and it's a reminder to those GBP/Haymon fighters that they are still the place to get more exposure.
You're 100 percent right.
Is it safe to assume that there is not All Access for Canelo Trout?
There is a one-episode All Access.
Hey DanO, seems like Weisfeld is getting free money from HBO, I think he spoke 1 time on a telecast so far
From what I am told he will become the unofficial judge on future BAD telecasts with Harold doing only WCB and PPV shows going forward.
30 Days in May treated Mayweather like he was Nelson Mandela about to do 20 years for a political crime instead of 90 days for assaulting the mother of his children. PATHETIC!
All I have to say is FLOYD HAS A NICE A**!!! Wouldn't you agree Dan?
Dan, where in the world to Crawford come from? I was thoroughly impessed with the way he boxed, ducked punches, and attacked. When will we see him again and against who? Thanks
He was a top amateur who has been brought along on Top Rank undercards the past few years.
How big would a Shiming vs Viloria match be if Shiming ends up doing well?
That's the fight Arum is looking toward. That is why Viloria is on the card.
So now it begs to be asked, has Mrs. DTM ever edited any of your articles?
Absolutely. I have had her read many stories before I have filed them to the office.
Wow, Dan! Did Showtime just botch up a major PPV? Why was there no press conference to announce Mayweather-Guerrero? The fight's almost here!
That is a huge mystery. It's not so much that there was no presser. It is that there has been zero effort to get the fighters with the boxing press. Mayweather has closed his camp and is not doing intereviews, which I guess he doesnt need since his money is guaranteed. And Guerrero has stopped doing interviews because his camp doesnt want him asked about the gun charges. It's really been a poor promotion thus far. They missed the initial burst of hype that a big fight needs. I dont blame GB or Showtime though. Part of the reason was because it took so long to get Mayweather's deal done that it ate up valuable time that would have been used for a press tour or at least a kickoff media event.
Who is this guy that Thurman is facing? Is he any good or another al hayman delivered poo poo platter?
He is facing Diego Chaves, who is 26 and undefeated. He's from Argentina and I have seen him fight. He is solid and has good power. I think it's actually a very interesting fight. Chaves is not known in the US but that doesn't mean it's a bad fight. I am very interested in it and think it's a great test for both guys.
I'm sure I'm not the only person in this chat wondering this: what does "DTM" in the context of your Misses stand for? "Dan the man"? I've wondered this for a while (lol).
Yes, some Freaks have been calling me that for years as short for Dan the Man.
Dan , what do you need to see from deontay wilder to make your top ten.
Some wins against guys who have a pulse.
Who would you like to see GGG fight?
Obviously, Martinez. But since that isn't happening at the moment, I love the Macklin fight. Would like to see Geale as well. I'd be happy with a Peter Quillin fight too, but that is an HBO/Showtime thing so forget that.
Dad, I heard hard work and dedication really works. Do I have to go run today?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
Respect is what Tim Bradley earned back two weeks ago
GGG is completely overrated! If it wasn't for his style, no one would be on his train! He's all style, no substance. And he hasn't fought any serious one of note. I'll get on that train when he beats someone of name.
Rick, Rick, Rick. I like you, man. You're a loooonnnngtime Fight Freak and a regular in these chats for years who I respect for generally making well-reasoned comments and asking good questions. So I am going to give you a pass today and just want to believe that somebody cracked you in the head with a baseball bat and that you are just not yourself today. Golovkin was a decorated amateur with an Olympic silver medal. I had him on my prospect list a few years ago. He is a terrific fighter with a style we all love. He has faced some good opponents too. Maybe not the elite yet, but that is because they wont face him. He has seven title defenses under his belt and has said flatly he will face anyone from 54 to 68 and I believe him. For you to make that comment surprises me but I hope your head injury from the bat attack heals.
Dan, who was Mayweather's toughest fight besides Castillo?
I'd say his tough fights were also with Emanuel Augustus and Cotto.
After Bradley-Provodnikov and Rios-Alvarado II, I would say that HBO is off to a superb start in the Haymon Buzz Off era, wouldn't you?
Yes, but HBO would have aired those fights anyway even if they were still doing biz with GB and Al.
dan a quick coment on jorge maysonet who fights tonight on espn 2
Good prospect and I am looking forward to seeing him tonight. I'm actually more interested in his undercard fight than the main event.
So most Thai fighters have long, hard to pronounce names, but I honestly don't have a clue how to pronounce Koki Kameda's opponent's name.
Mrs. DTM can pronounce all the Thai names.
Hi dan, can you please tell me when in odlanier Solis next fight?
He fought and won about a week ago in a fight that put me to sleep.
Mayweather's most recent toughest fight was obviously against prison tap water.
With all of the changes lately do you spend more time corresponding with the Showtime guys or the HBO people?
I am in contact with people from both networks on a regular basis.
Dan, do you think provodnikov would come back down to 140? Would love to see him against Alvarez or rios even if at catch weight!!!
No. He looked good at 147 and announced that is where he is staying.
Knowing your dislike for flying, do you ever see yourself going to Macau if someone like Pacquiao is fighting there?
I've been thinking a lot about that this week and if Manny fights there I would make the pitch for ESPN to send me, yes. I'd have to suck it up but I'd do it.
How will Arum translate giving the middle finger to the Asians?
Pay the man, Shirley!
Dan, you mentioned that Arum has been floating Macau for a long time and that you and others thought it was just bluster. Now that it has come off, do you think it is still bluster that he will put a Pacquiao fight there?
I think there is a lot possibility to Manny fighting there than I once believed. It is very serious to the point where HBO and Arum are talking seriously about how they would go about mounting the promotion and crunching their numbers to see if it works.
Dan have you ever been invited to Mayweather's post fight parties?
Dan stop making fun of my school. Esteemed lecturer Hasim Rahman is teaching a 3 credit hour course this quarter entitled, "The Art of Negotiating a Rematch".
PAY THE MAN, SHIRLEY!!!!
Hey, after watching "30 Days In May", do you think Barack Obama will make the Clark County Detention Center that jailed the great martyr Floyd Mayweather a historical landmark like South Africa did Robben Island in honor of Nelson Mandela?
OMG that is hilarious.
Arum's quote from last weekend needs to be repeated here: ?HBO?s new policy is no more bullsh*t Al Haymon appearance fights. Berto with tomato cans, Keith Thurman with tomato cans. Competitive fights, that?s what the fans want.? HALLELUJAH!
Yeah, but it's easy for Bob to say that. He's the guy that has done his fair share of HBO appearance fights and got mad when he got ripped for it.
I thought the deal between HBO and ESPN included some advertising. Am I wrong? I never see any adds for any of these fights, but I always see UFC adds. Thanks Dan
The HBO/ESPN deal is centered on PPV bouts.
Dan, off the top of your head, who are a few of the most genuinely kind and nicest prominent boxing figures you?ve met in the sport? Emmanuel Steward gave me the impression of having been that sort of person.
Absolutely, Emanuel was one of those guys. Would give you the shirt off his back. Awesome ambassador for the sport. Angelo Dundee was like that too. Bert Sugar was a great guy who always had a ton of fight fans around him. There are a lot of scum bags in boxing but there are also a lot of great people I have met over the years too.
If Manny fights in Macau, would he fight in the morning in Macau for US PPV buyers to watch in prime time? Would Americans buy a PPV shown in the morning?
The fight would take place in the morning Asia time and air at the same time it always does on PPV in America.
Which one of the following 5 events would you choose to attend:KISS concert (Destroyer tour), The Thrilla in Manila, Duke-Kentucky (92 NCAA Tournament), Any Wrestlemania, Yankees World Series clinching game?
Brutal, brutal question. Duke-Kentucky 92 regional final is one of the highlights of my life as a sports fan. I think I would pick that one believe it or not.
King, I'm thinkin' now that HBO has booted Golden Boy, that Top Rank will use this as political clout and really work to make some outstanding fights in a sort of one upmanship kinda' way that GB will in turn respond to and US the fight fans will be the beneficary of some solid, solid cards. Could that play out?
It could but the unfortunate part is that many of the best fights in the sport will go unmade because the companies dont work together.
Did you ever meet Eddie Futch?
He died in 2001, about a year or so after I came on the beat but I did meet him 2-3 times. Was a very nice man.
Why as fans do we get 45 minutes of analysis after Abril's last fight on Showtime, and HBO cuts the broadcast seconds after Rios vs Alvarado is over? Are they limited to how long they can run?
I wish I had an answer for you. Each network does things its own way. I would love a little more postfight on some HBO fights and a lot less on some Showtime fights.
Which Event or fight really kicked off the TR GB fued?
When Oscar gave Pacqauiao a bag of money in the back of a limo to sign him when he was still under contract to Top Rank. Read this: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/140/blame-manny-pacquiao-top-rank-golden-boy-battle
This story also goes back to when GB signed Pacquiao. It's a follow up to the story I broke the day before: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=2602660
Buy or sell on Dibella's no-profanity tweets holding up?
LOL, maybe for a few days. Lou is Lou.
Is Lewis a top 10 all time heavyweight?
In my view, yes.
Nice to remind everyone how it all started. Filipinos hate when you do that! Because it's fact and no way around it.
Facts are facts.
Dan - Have you heard anything on Vic Darchinyan lately?
He recently signed with manager Frank Espinoza, who also manages Ponce De Leon, Abner Mares and others. Vic does not have a promoter but he is supposed to fight April 20 in Mexico on the Victor Terrazas-Cristian Mijares vacant junior featherweight title undercard.
Dan I know I'm in the minority but while I think Alvarado-Rios 2 was a terrific fight. I thought that Alvarado's movement towards the end of the fight was a bit of letdown. Personally i liked the Bradley-Provodnikov fight better.
That movement is called "boxing" and he did is expertly. He did not run. But he fought smart.
I was working on my tax return and needed a quick distraction so I came here just to say hello and procrastinate a little.
My taxes are done, thanks to Mrs. DTM.
"Many believed Pacquiao would sign a long term deal with Top Rank after the fight, and Arum was making plans for Pacquiao to fight in the Chinese territory Macau next spring at the Wynn Macau resort. "And here we are 7 years later
Dan, aren't you excited to see how much camera time, and under those brighter lights I might add, HBO will give the lovely Rachel Cordingley when Froch takes on Kessler? (lol)
Pay the man, Shirley!
dan if juanma lopez vs Mickey Garcia end up happening do you expect that fight to be in Puerto Rico, Mexico or las Vegas
Arum said it would probably be in PR.
Dan, can you tell us who voted for Mayweather 4th on the P4P list?
I have no idea but that is a bad call. I have been voting him No. 1.
I don't get the criticism of the few people saying Alvarado ran toward the end of the fight. Someone even compared it to de la Hoya - Trinidad, could not be more wrong.
To compare that to Tito and Oscar is just stupid.
Will the Godfather of your child be someone in boxing and will there be a sanctioning fee attached?
LOL, not to both questions.
Good thing Arthur Mercante Jr wasn't reffing the Louisville vs. Duke game, he would have made Kevin Ware continue playing.
WOW. That is the harshest thing I have ever seen about a ref. Ouch.
If HBO was so tired of the typical Al Haymon fighter vs COMPLETE BUM card, why did they keep showing them? This is not a new occurance. Haymon's fighters have been facing subpar opposition. Hec, some of them had even been PPV fights.
Al had a ton of leverage because of Floyd and HBO basically did what he wanted on a lot of shows. Now that Floyd is gone from HBO, Al has no leverage there.
Dan - I think I'd rather have HBO show Abregu-Decarie instead of Arreola-Stiverne. Am I crazy?
They are showing both. It's a tripleheader.
Any truth to the rumor that Arum toked after Rios/Alvo fight?
I can neither confirm nor deny.
Hard Work and Ammunition
Saw Tyson was at the fights last week. Which active boxer do you see as being the biggest general boxing fan?
Lots of fighters go to fights so I couldnt name one but Mike had a blast last week at the Rios-Alvarado rematch. He was sitting in front of me, slightly to my right and jumped out of his seat more than once.
If you don't mind me asking what are you and mrs dtm having?
That will be announced after the baby is born but we know. We're in crunch time.
Anybody else notice how damn fast Donaire's hands were in the Road To show when he was doing the step ups with the band attached to his waist? He threw a flurry of about 20 uppercuts in 1 step
Donaire has tremendous speed.
When Mrs. DTM delivers the baby, will you weigh him/her at the time of delivery, or let the baby rehydrate more to his/her natural weight?
Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!!!
Just saw that Mauricio Herrera vs Ji-Hoon Kim is on FNF in may. How can that not be awesome??
It should be a good old fashioned slobberknocker.
Oscar confuses me some times, is he aware of the GBP-TR feud...seems to make an inordinate amount of dumb tweets regarding matchups that are never going to happen..
Dan, have you got plans to hide away to write your stuff when the baby is born? As wonderful as they are they steal all your time ! :)
It's a fluid situation.
Dan, there are points in a marriage when you just need to keep your mouth shut. Pointing out to your Filipina wife that Manny was one of the instigators in the GB-TR feud is one of them.
DTM, you mentioned some good matchups for Ward at 175- who are you thinking of specifically? Aside from the remote chance of Hopkins.
I'd say the Pascal-Bute winner would be the most interesting one.
Dan - Anything in the works for Juan Carlos Burgos?
The plan is for him to be the opponent for Gamboa in a June fight, but it is not set yet.
D$, will the weigh-in for Donaire-Rigo be open to the public or no word yet?
I do not believe it is open to the public but I am not sure.
On the subject of your baby taking up your time, just write articles ahead of time with whatever results you think are right. Duane Ford does it all the time with scorecards and so far he still has a job.
What is your general opinion of a guy like Zou getting so much attention and money for a debut? Good for boxing to have young stars so early or are we setting ourselves up for a Bojado-like failure?
I have no problem with it. He wouldnt be getting $300K if it wasnt there. He is driving the event so he deserves what he gets.
Will HBO use Larry Merchant for anything else besides Saturday's Fights in Macau?
HBO is not using Larry for the show on Saturday. Larry was hired by Top Rank, which is producing the show and selling it to nations around the world. It sold it to HBO, which is taking Top Rank's clean feed and will add its own graphics but HBO is not involved at all in the production, which is why it is on HBO2 not HBO.
Was your dad a big boxing fan, and did that help peak your interest? Mine used to watch occasionally, and even the occasional exposure has me sitting here at this chat!
My father was a mild boxing who watched basically the biggest fights. I recall watching some Ray Leonard fights with him when I was a kid.
Newer Fight Freak here, have to give you credit for spending so much time with your readers. Very refreshing and rare in today's sound-bite, over-exposed media culture. Thanks DTM!
When Rios and Alvarado have the rubber match whether it be a fight or two from now do you see Top Rank putting it on PPV so they could earn more $$ maybe with a stacked UC along with it? I would have no problem paying PPV to watch them fight again
I still think it winds up on HBO but for a bigger license fee.
Dan, what are your thoughts on Terrance Crawford after his performance last weekend?
Good fighter with a lot of ability. Not the most exciting but he can definitely fight and I think he will be better at 135.
Floyd was quick in '30 Days In May' to say he would fight Superman or Batman. Just not Pac-man, I guess. Right?
Boxing Scoreboard (End of 1st quarter)HBO: 2Showtime: 0
The year is very young.
Have you ever got distracted while covering a fight and missed a knockout punch?
It's happened and then you watch the replay.
Whats up Dan, I finally saw the new HBO intro with the truck you guys are talking about. LOL
Sorry to hear that.
Meant to ask this last week, but my big question about the return of 'Legendary Nights' is this: will Merchant be returning to write the installment? The original run of episodes no doubt benefited greatly from his words.
As far as I know, Larry is not involved in the project. He did an awesome job on the original series.
Hey big Dan, what's your opinion on New York prospect Marcus Browne, maybe future champ, great power and speed
Good amateur, good prospect but too soon to tell. He looked good in NY last month in his knockout. But it wasnt a surprise based on who he was facing. I had a chance to meet him at the weigh in and talk with him for a few minutes. Came across very well. Good personality and nice guy. I am interested to follow his progress.
Hey Dan - interesting hearing your take on Rios - who has been your most boring interviewee?!
John Ruiz, Frankie Gomez come immediately to mind.
I actually can't believe HBO has now replaced the iconic B.A.D. theme with a truck as well. What, did all the negative feedback about the new WCB music and the truck just encourage them?
To dump the BAD music was a sin. Shame on HBO.
I am a warrior in the ring. You are a chat warrior. Respect.
Hey Dan, hbo ruined the WBC intro a few years back by changing the music, now the did it to BAD, what's next? New 24/7 music? Changing the intros truly sucks, there was no need to do it.
Dan, Who is training Andy Lee now that Emanuel is no longer with us?
I believe he is with Adam Booth.
Yes. Read this: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/33/recalling-punch-changed-my-life-boxing In addition, I have my bout sheet from the Antonio Diaz-Hector Quiroz rematch that I was at. I sat by the ring apron for that fight next to Top Rank's Lee Samuels. My bout sheet is covered in blood. I saved it.
Dan - How many fights is HBO2 showing Saturday?
Three -- Zou's debut and the two world title bouts with Viloria and Martinez. The Wilfredo Vazquez fight will be on Saturday night on UniMas' Solo Boxeo Tecate telecast.
Dan I cancelled my HBO two weeks ago. Im sure I didnt miss anything , right ?
ZouDan, will Arum ever retire? I mean the guy has to have all the money he could ever spend, does he just love the game so much...or is he just so competetive he wants to bury Oscar?
Bob is never going to retire. He loves what he does and will die someday doing it.
Dan, after spending some time with Tim Bradley, did he give you any insight as to who he wants to fight next?
He said over and over he didnt care.
Hey Dan, any truths to the rumored Golovokin-Macklin fight and if so who do you have winning that fight?
It's not a rumor. Read this piece I wrote the other day: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3628/promoters-working-on-golovkin-macklin
Dan, when was the last time you heard someone get so much money for a 4 rounder like Shimming is.
Never. I think it's a record.
I was reading through the Rio's chat and he was talking about how much Alvarado ran, wouldn't fight etc. I didn't see it that way at all. I saw a smart fight from a guy who knew what it would take to win. Your thoughts?
I dont agree with Rios' take on the fight. Alvarado did not run. He fought his rear end off and also outboxed Rios.
I read the Grantland piece on Don King. I'm sure you've interacted with him many times. Does he really give those strange long winded answers to your questions?
Yes, that is Don.
Have several people send in some of the same questions I get all the time, which is why I did a two-part FAQ awhile back. I encourage you all to check this out: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8834349/dan-rafael-frequently-asked-chat-questions-part-2
If Cunningham does beat Fury, and I think he can, where does he go from there?
Whoever wins that fight is going to be in a great spot.
DTM, i think Floyd is a great entertainer, but i thought 30 days in May was kind of boring. And the whole nudity scenes was just not necessary. I think HBO is more classy and has done a way better job with documentaries; sticking with the focus on Boxing. I hope All Access does a better job with the build up for the actual fight, any thougts?
As I answered earlier, Showtime did not produce the documentary. They bought it and aired it as part of their deal with Floyd.
Macklin vs GGG will be a war, they may as well paint the ring red right now!!!!
Who are the boxer's who you have covered that have the biggest whale reputation when it comes to wagering, besides Floyd?
I once saw a prominent fighter drop about $60K at a craps table at Mandalay Bay in about 5 minutes.
Thanks for chatting today Fight Freaks. Hope you enjoy the fights this weekend. I'll be appearing on FNF tonight with the latest news and notes. Hope you have a great weekend. Talk to you next week. Peace.
