When talking about the Panthers receivers, you seem to never mention David Gettis. If he gets back to full health he's pretty darn good. Especially as a deep threat. He had 600+ yards and I think 4TDs his rookie year (great for that QB situation then). I say he's better than Edwards,Adams, and Pilares
That's a very good point. Guess I tend to forget about Gettis due to the injuries. But, if he's healthy, I agree that he can be better than the guys you mentioned.
Do you see the biggest needs for the Saints being a LT and NT? If so, how do you see the Saints filling these positions free agency or the draft?
Seem to be having a little technical difficult on my end. Let me sign out and sign back in. Be back in a minute.
any chance the falcons go after revis?
No, absolutely no chance. They wouldn't be able to pay him and Matt Ryan both.
Hey Pat with Goldson and Barron, do the Bucs have the best safety tandom in the nfc south?
They could get to that. But right now I've got to say Moore and DeCoud in Atlanta. They both went to Pro Bowl last season.
What range should we expect matt ryans extension to be in?
Right around $20 million per year.
With the Saints switching to a 3-4, do you think they are done addressing the OLB position? Or do they switch focus to NT and CB?
Think they're probably done in free agency because they've got no cap room. Can see them going for OLB, NT and CB in draft.
Hi Pat, the general consensus seems to be that Clabo was cut because of cap-issues - but what about the simple fact that he was cut because The Falcons simply just want to get a younger O-line (Kontz already replacing McClure)?
There's some truth to that. And people that know more about o-line play than I do seem to think Clabo's play dropped off last season.
Afternoon Pat, Any word on the Bucs and Jets working out this Revis trade?
Nothing new, but I think it remains a good possibility. Might come closer to draft or maybe even draft day as both teams see how the draft starts to unfold.
How much of a difference will we see in the Panthers offense now that Shula is the OC?
Think it will remain largely the same as Chudzinski. But I think you'll see less read option and more of the traditional power running game.
Do you think the Saints will try to trade Chris Ivory?
Doubt that they're actively shopping any of their RBs. But the rest of the league knows they have more RBs than they need and may come to them with trade offers. Pierre Thomas might be the one with the most trade value.
I dont get it. The Flacons R in need of a CB yet make no effrot 2 trade 4 Reavis. Why?
They can't pay him. Simple as that.
Do you think John Abraham will be falcon by the start of the season
I really doubt it. I think once you make a decision like that it's final.
Any chance the bucs go after Mathieu in second or third round?
Maybe more toward the third. They at least appear to be doing their homework on him.
Pat, what have you heard about Nnamdi Asomugha's reasons for choosing the 49ers over the Saints?
Think he just wanted to get back to Bay Area.
Pat, do you think that the release of Clabo was a move to maybe sign a veteran corner or maybe bring back Abe?
No, I think it had more to do with getting a Ryan contract extension done.
Wow...The Falcons totally killed it in free agency. They have to be Superbowl bound.....Do you agree?
I'll wait until September to make predictions, but I like what they've done.
I'm tired of the Bucs-Jets rumblings involving Revis. At this point, would it be more of less expensive for the Bucs to trade up high enough to get Dee Milliner? Younger, no ACL injury, and much cheaper. Win?
It is tiring. But sometimes that's how this league works. You've got to be patient to get the best deal. Revis is proven. But I don't think that trading up for Milliner is a bad idea.
I entirely agree with your article on Williams and Stewart. It was so frustrating for me watching that first half of the season. Let Cam be a qb and let double trouble do their thing. What are shula's tendencies when it comes to offense? will he do just that?
I'm looking forward to seeing Shula's offense. I think he's a better coach than people in Tampa Bay and Alabama give him credit for. He worked with what he had to work with in those places. He's got the talent to have an explosive offense now. I don't see him being nearly as conservative as he was in the past.
with the extra money the falcons have now I think the falcons should add a veteran corner in fa and get a tackle in the first round that could be a starter. What are your thoughts.
They don't have that extra money yet because Clabo was a June 1 release. His cap room doesn't come available until June 1. As of now, I think Falcons are only about $2.4 million under cap.
Since D. Franks is seemingly inept at punt returning, what kind of plan are the Falcons looking at to get more explosive in the return game? Special teams can spark a drive and the Falcons had very few, if any, explosive returns last season.
I have to believe they'll be looking to get someone with return ability in the draft. That's something they have to upgrade.
I don't get it why the release of Clabo is linked to an extension of Ryans contract? As we've seen with Flacco and Romo, those contracts are cap friendly in the beginning, so why cut Clabo if an extension of Ryans contract would probably give the Falcons 5-6 mil. more in cap space?
It's not just about this year. Ryan's second-year cap figure likely would be a huge jump. They're looking a few years down the road.
Alot of talk this week on the PFW scouting report on both Geno Smith and Cam Newton. What are your thoughts on that report? Accurate for Cam?
Appreciate the repeated questions on this one, but it's not my job to criticize other media. The guy wrote his opinion.
Any truth to the rumor us fans have created about a revis and tebow trade since we don't have a back up qb?
You think Tebow's a QB? I don't.
Will Vaccaro be there for carolina when we pick at 14? He instantly makes our secondary a lot better. He also will help out our young corners
I think there's a pretty good chance he'll be there.
What's it going to take for Mike Smith to abandon the "let's ease up on the gas when we have a lead" mentality?
He's a smart guy. I think he probably spent some time reflecting on the past this offseason and will make some adjustments.
Do you think Tebow could be a effective TE or FB for the bucs?
I think he'd have a shot if he switches to TE or FB.
I had to laugh at the Tebow coming to the Bucs comment. He doesn't strike me as the type of QB Schiano or Sullivan want under center. If they think Freeman is inaccurate and inconsistent. . .
Yep and he doesn't strike me as a QB.
Well for us Panther fans, that was the big news this week - that people are saying Cam is still immature and not a team leader. So i was just curious if you agreed.
I thought Cam progressed nicely the second half of this season. When I interviewed him at the Super Bowl, I saw no signs of immaturity. But, again, the PFW writer wrote his opinion and he's entitled to that.
Tebow doesn't strike me as a TE or FB either (he can't block or catch). He's how many seasons into his career? Kind of late for a massive position change like that. Tebow should take the offer from that area team when the Jets release him.
All right, maybe linebacker then?
Any chance the Falcons make a major splash on draft day to acquire an immediate impact player, whether draftee or veteran?
Think there's a chance you could see them trade up. They've got draft picks stockpiled.
When's the blogger mock draft coming out? Any surprises in store for us?
Believe it's the Tuesday before the draft. Right now, I'm thinking along lines similar to what most of the mocks have had. But, if there are surprises in front of me, then I might pull a surprise or two.
Who would you rather have as your QB? Clausen or Tebow?
Clausen. He can at least throw a spiral.
Chances Brian Banks actually makes the roster? Or is he just there to provide inspiration in training camp?
No, he's got a legitimate chance to make roster or at least practice squad. Falcons aren't about gimmicks. This isn't some publicity stunt.
Is there a list of who the Panthers have met with anywhere?
I stick them into the roundup posts when I see them, but I don't see them all. Think walterfootball.com does a pretty good job of tracking the visits and private workouts.
Your thoughts on Manuel to the Bucs? If he works out and Freeman regresses, money saved and a year to work on mechanics. If Freeman works out, Manuel becomes trade bait. Or, if they're confident, maybe even trade Freeman?
I was out at Gruden's QB Camp the day Manuel was there and was extremely impressed with him. But if Bucs take him in the first round, they'd be pretty much pulling the plug on Freeman right now. Think you have to give him this season to really judge him.
So is Cedric Ellis gonna get to stick around I thought he would gone by now, or is there a reason financially teams wait ti release players.
Sedrick Ellis is a free agent. They didn't release him. His contract has expired.
How much of a rebound do you see from the Saints this year?
Potential is there for a big rebound. They obviously have the offense. Just need to get up a little better on defense.
I am a huge fan of the (REAL) USC and Panthers!!! With that being said do you think the Gamecocks Safety D.J. Swearinger would be a good pick for the Panthers?
Could be. They definitely could use some more help at safety.
Does Carolina still have the best RB tandem in the NFL?
Could if the coaches use them properly. And I think it would be trio, not tandem, if you include Tolbert.
Pat, I'm a big Saints fan and I read you blog daily. Do you see Clabo pulling a Lofton and going over to the Saints? Even though he's older and not great, I see him being a good fit because of his price tag and the fact that the Saints have solid guards to pair him up with, like Strief. Thoughts?
I would not totally rule that out. Think he could fit there. Problem is the salary cap. Saints really have very little room to work with and I think some other teams are willing to pay Clabo decent money.
How could ATL have so much confidence in Larry Holmes, given how few snaps of real game action he actually played? Quite a leap of faith, no, given the team's aerial attack focus??
Lamar Holmes, unless I missed them picking up the former boxer. I think they have some hope for Holmes, but not sure they're completely counting on him. Could draft an OT early.
Panthers can't afford to keep the RB trio can they?
They have so far, which surprised me. If they're going to trade anyone, Williams is the one that makes most sense.
Am I the only buccaneer fan who thinks trading for Revis is a mistake? Look at the money he wants... It ridiculous!
Yep, but it would help them spend all that cap money they have!!!
It was Marvin Hagler that the Falcons signed.
As a long time panthers fan I appreciate the Nick Goings shout out earlier in the week
Nick's a good guy. Enjoyed covering him back in the day. But hated to see him running the draw play on third down.
Peria Jerry......Is this his last year as a Falcon?
More than likely, unless his play really improves.
Murph, send your question again. You've got a type-o in there that I can't use. But it's a good question.
Any reports of Robert Meachem surfacing on any NFC South team?
Have not heard his name tied to anyone in NFC South.
Historically, you seem to think Ronde Barber is on the outside of the HOF bubble. Could one more season of solid stats put him where he belongs? We love him as much as Brooks!
It can't hurt him.
Do you think the Bucs will draft more than one cornerback in the draft?
Depends on if they make the Revis trade and if they keep Wright.
would you rank the saints top 5 needs as NT, LT, CB, S, LB.. in that order?
Probably pretty close to that. Might go with LT as No. 1.
Any reason to be concerned about Doug Martin regressing his second year? More focus on him?
Doubt it. He'll have his two Pro Bowl guards back and that should make him even better.
When is Bowers next court date?
Believe it's next week. Think the date is April 11.
Is there any chance that the Saints surprise everyone and take Tavon Austin if available? Logic says defense here, but if none of their prospects are available, BPA comes into play, correct?
Would not totally rule it out. Payton's an offensive guy and they're a little lighter on WRs than they've been in the past.
About Revis being the right move, Mark Dom has to put a playoff team on the field or he's gone. His short term goal is to keep his job. I'm with Sam to a pretty large degree.
Agree, it's an important year for Dominik.
How is Roddy White handling the success of Julio Jones?
A very good question and something I tried to keep an eye on. Roddy has a little of the "diva" WR personality. But I saw no outward signs of jealousy last season.
In your honest opinion... Is Josh Freeman the guy?
I can't give you a final answer yet. I see a lot of good things and I think he can be the guy. But he needs to go out and play consistently well for an entire season.
I say give up THIS years number 1 pick for Revis and put Freeman and Dominik's jobs on the line with results. We can't have no first round pick and no QB next year IF Freeman is up and down and Dominik can't assemble a playoff team.
Any chance they cut Clabo because his hip injury is worse than we knew?
Haven't heard anything along those lines.
Just how amazing is Thomas Davis?? Don't think he gets enough credit. Think he'll be even better this year?
A big tip of the cap to Thomas. Amazing comeback last year. And a truly good guy.
A few years later, do you think the Julio Jones trade was worth it?
Yes, I do. I think we're only starting to see how good Julio can be.
Compare Freeman's 4th year with that of either Manning brother and he isn't that far off. In fact he was flat out much better than Eli in his 4th year. I think fans forget how young he is, how many OCs he had, and just how far behind the Bucs were on offensive talent.
Good point, but he still has to produce this year.
Looks like Steven Jax is already working out, I think he's going to be extremely driven by having the opportunity to play on a hopefully winning team. I think he's going to be a vast improvement on Turner, seems Turner just about never came into camp in shape (except the first season). Your thoughts?
I'm in complete agreement with you.
What do the Panthers have to do To get DeAngelo to see That restructuring is the best thing for him?
Give him money up front and don't ask him to take a cut in pay. In other words, convert most of his base salary into signing bonus money.
Do you think Devery Henderson won't be back? His 2012 seemed a shadow of what he was in 2009.
Think his days with Saints are probably over.
So, is it pretty good bet BUCS draft a QB now?
Yep, unless they've got some veteran up their sleeve. But the free agents that are out there aren't that attractive. Maybe there's some vet they think will get released or maybe there's someone they want to trade for.
What are the Falcons going to do about Tony Gonzalez replacement? Would be nice to have someone learn from T.G. before he retires and takes all that knowledge with him.
Think there's a chance they could draft a TE somewhere after the first round and groom him.
Better group in the backfield: Saints or Panthers? (not most expensive, just better overall talent)
Apples and oranges. Saints and Panthers use their RBs in very different ways. But I do think both backfields are loaded with talent.
Will the Falcons pick up another DE or CB this offseason?
Yep, probably both. Just not sure if both will come in draft or if they'll try to squeeze in another veteran or two. All right, time to sign off. Great chat! Thanks to all for stopping by.
