Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

JJT
  (1:14 PM)

Sorry for the delay, but we had some big-time technical difficulties. We're on track now, so let's roll

Tony (Richmond, CA)

What do you think about Dez Bryant's comments on the radio about the "hatred' of the Cowboys fueling his fire? What took him so long? And who makes more news off the field, instead of on, Dallas, or the Jets?

JJT
  (1:15 PM)

much ado about nothing. These days, the Jets make a little more news to me

Kenny (new york)

How come the Cowvoys never looked at Free Agent Safety Courtney Greene

JJT
  (1:15 PM)

short answer: they didn't think much of him and they didn't have any money to spend

Andy (Chicago)

Any worries so far about Harrison?

JJT
  (1:16 PM)

nope. If he makes 30+ starts, he'll do what he's supposed to do

Frank (Laredo)

JJT What about Christian Michael for the Cowboys in the third round? !2 touchdowns for A&M last year in a limited role. Could be that goal line presence the Cowboys have lacked in recent years. I like him better than the Michigan St. guy.

JJT
  (1:16 PM)

not bad. The Cowboys need better blocking at goal line. DeMarco Murray is good enough to score if given some holes

traci (napa)

Any truth to the Eric Winston talk?

JJT
  (1:18 PM)

there's a HUGE difference between talking and seeing where someone is as it relates to contract parameters and getting into serious negotiations. It's the difference between buying someone a drink at the club and getting a phone number

James (Dallas)

Thanks for the chat JJT, I've been looking at a lot of the mock drafts done by both Kiper and Todd. A lot of them have both Cooper and Warmack being drafted early, but I still remember last year when Decastro fell to the Steelers, do you think they'll be around when the Cowboys are picking?

JJT
  (1:19 PM)

Someone always falls. And you should never be shocked if a guard falls because they're not sexy picks, especially high in the draft

JJT
  (1:20 PM)

you can follow me on twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas. I answer a lot of questions on Twitter, especially if I don't get to yours today

Ian (Atl, GA)

The Cowboys are in serious talks to sign OT Eric Winston. He is 29 and is the 9th rated RT in the NFL. He is an obvious upgrade over Doug Free. Do you know if the deal is imminent or should we not get our hopes up. Also, do you like the strategy of adding an cheap veteran or do you think they should be focusing solely on the draft to build long term?

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

I don't believe that is the case as we speak right now, so I wouldn't get my hopes up. If you can get a vet at the right price, then make it happen. If not, the go with Parnell or Free at a reduced rate

Jorge (DFW)

Do you think the Eric Winston deal gets done?

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

too early to say. Their talks, from what I've been told, are exploratory, which is less significant than preliminary

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Could you envision any kind of scenario where the Cowboys would either trade up or trade down in the first round?

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

trading up? no. Trading down? yep. This is a deep draft. I could see them going backward pretty easily. I wouldn't do it, but I can see it.

Brady (TX) [via mobile]

It frustrates me that Craig Gentry isn't the full time starting center feilder. Leonys Martin hasn't proved himself at all. What should the Rangers do?

JJT
  (1:28 PM)

Craig gentry has proved himself? I don't think so. I think he had an excellent season as a backup last year and is trying to prove he can start at this level. Baseball is a long season. Martin has more tools and should eventually be better. Gentry is better now. Martin needs some time. Let's let it play out. there's no need to rush right now

landry locker (irving)

JJT why you so ugly, short fat guy with a bald head who talks smack on all athletes in the metroplex

JJT
  (1:28 PM)

yo mama

Lance (NYC)

yo JJT- me thinks the Dallas Cowboys should go OL with the first two picks in the draft then DL in the 3rd round. This team needs some beef on both sides on the line. S & RB can be found later or in post draft FA. Thoughts???

JJT
  (1:29 PM)

I just never believed you can say that. What if there's not a lineman there who fits the criteria or your particular need. You don't wanna take an OL with a 3rd grade in the 1st because you need a lineman. You take the best players. You can never go wrong doing that

though cowboys earn (chihuahua mex)

durant the new ilb, is a improve over connor ?

JJT
  (1:30 PM)

durant will play SLB. Yes, he's an upgrade over Kyle Wilbur

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

he's on the fringe. It doesn't matter why he's not getting it done - only that he's not. I wouldn't expect to see him in any close game for a while

Dan (Dallas)

With FC Dallas top of the entire MLS and unbeaten at home since July, do you see this as a Championship year or is there still too much work to do in order to maintain a genuine title tilt?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

I have paid no attention to FC Dallas.I like the Premier League and watched some of the MAn U -City game yesterday. So I'm not anti-soccer. FC Dallas just does't excite me

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

depends on when he might be available. I wouldn't take him before the 4th probably. Sometime in the next year or 2, the Cowboys must invest a HIGH pick on a QB

Ray (From Southside)

Hey JJT love ur work...do u think the cowboys should sign a free agent OT in Winston or Smith, or just draft one later this month??

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

thanks much. It depends on the price for any of the FA tackles. If you don't like it - the Cowboys still don;t have much money - then it might be better to pass and draft one

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the First National League Team that the Rangers will face this season?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

cubs

Candy (Slippery Rock)

What makes more sense with Profar? Move him to second and Kinsler to the OF or just move him to the OF?

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

let him play short and second in Round Rock and see what happen. He's only 19-20. There's time

Keanu (Honolulu)

Hey JJT, what's your biggest surprise so far with the Rangers?

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

Tanner Scheppers has been dealing. 27 of 30 pitches for strikes. He's been obliterating batters. Impressive.

Mike Ho (Hong Kong)

JJT, the bullpen looks a little rough but what do you think of Scheppers?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

Scheppers, as I just mentioned, has been outstanding. Ortiz, the rookie lefty, has been good too. Everyone is fighting to define a role right now

Matt (San Antonio)

JJT, which sport do you enjoy covering the most?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

football, but I like the access of baseball. If you have a question in baseball, you can get it answered

raul (rio grande city)

JJT, does luck play a part when it comes to the draft?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

a little bit, but over the course of time I don't think luck has anything to do with it

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

a little bonus breaking news. Jered Weaver to DL with fractured elbow. It happened on Mitch Moreland's shot back up the middle, when Weaver tried to avoid the ball

Andy (Chicago)

How much will the Angels miss Weaver since he now out 4-6 weeks with a broken elbow? I have to think this is a huge loss for them.

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

the best thing for the Angels is that it's early in the season. Maybe he'll just miss 6 or 7 starts. CJ wilson is now the staff's anchor. Make of that what u will.

raul (rio grande city)

JJT, do you see the Rangers scoring alot because Dave Magadan has coached up the hitters?

Reuben Johnson (Nashville)

How comfortable are you with Matt Johnson as a starter?

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

I don't the offense has been that good thus far. But it does seem like he has made a connection with Ian Kinsler, which is good, and it looks like guys are really working the count and trying to get good pitches to hit

JJT
  (1:50 PM)

@Reuben: My parents are each from Nashville. Shout out to North Nashville, Pearl High, Fisk and Tennessee State. Now that I have that out of the way, I"ve never seen Matt Johnson play. BUt he must be pretty good to last this long with no playing time.

Corey (D.C.)

How well do you think Bruce Carter will transition from ILB next to Sean Lee, to OLB in the 4-3? Will he be asked to rush the passer?

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

at weakside linebacker, where he doesn't have to deal with as many blockers he should be outstanding chasing plays from the backside and making a nuisance of himself. He may get some sacks, but he should have a ton of tackles

Morice (Virginia Beach)

Will we ever know what David Arkin's role on this team will be?

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

I'll be shocked if he makes the team

David (Iowa)

how content are the Cowboys with Durant and Wilber at SLB? can we expect to draft someone to compete? if so who?

JJT
  (1:52 PM)

they hope Wilbur wins the job, but they have Durant in case he doesn't. Think Dan Connor and Bruce Carter last year.

raul (rio grande city)

JJT, whats up with this Lawrence Okoye? can he come in and be a backup at one of the DT spots?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

he's never played pro football before. Practice squad for any team would be major accomplishment

Peter (Atlanta, GA)

How many more chances does Tony Romo get to win a big one?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

4-5 years worth

Jorge (DFW)

If we can get Austin the in the 1st round, Pugh in the 2nd round, Honey Badger in the 3rd (high reward-playmaker) and trade up to the 3rd to get Lattimore(high reward) would you like it?

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

cowboys WILL NEVER EVER DRAFT the Honey Badger. Not even in the 7th round. They wouldn't even sign him as FA. Garrett wants right kind of guys./ He's not it

shawn (NC Mountains)

JJT, Thanks for providing us with some solid opinions. Will the cowboys invest in a solid back-up in the running game?

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

I know y'all get sick of these answers, but it depends on who's there. You don't have to force it. Follow the board and good things will happen

Peter (Atlanta, GA)

Thoughts on Britney Grimer?

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

great women's college player. Would have no chance at here position in the NBA to do anything

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Blessings JJT - Thanks for hosting today's chat. With the Mavs unlikely to land another superstar in the offseason to complement Dirk, what should be Cuban's strategy moving forward to make this team a title contender once again?

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

there is no strategy. Either draft a star or sign one in FA. Those are your choices

Peter (Atlanta, GA)

Who is the greatest Cowboy ever? Emmit? Irvin? Aikman? Staubach?

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

staubach

Chris (Kansas)

Everyone seems to be so hung up on the Cowboys getting a Safety in the first round. I however am not in that club. In my opinion the Cowboys MUST address the Oline with the 18th pick. With the investment made in Tony Romo, I think it is time that a priority is placed in keeping him upright and healthy as well as giving him more than 1.5 seconds in the pocket before he is scrambling for his life. Im agine if #9 could sit back there and have a picnic, write his grocery list and call his Mom like Tom Brady or Drew Brees can!!

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

what if the top OL are gone? If it don't fit, don't force it

Steve (Raleigh)

Jean-Jacques...enjoy your articles. It appears that due to the quality depth at RT in FA and the OL and Safety depth in the draft that immediate help for the Cowboys is on the way in those areas. Can they address these areas and still realistically find quality additions to the DLine and RB?

JJT
  (2:01 PM)

sure. It depends on how the board has been prioritized and who's there when it's time draft. Too many folks want to draft this guy or that guy but until you know who's on the clock when it's time to draft, it's hard to make such grand proclamations

Jeremy (DFW)

Love hearing you on the radio taking it too Locker and McMahon on Saturdays. Whats your reaction to the ump messing up last night? My only regret is I wish it had been Hamilton at the plate when it happened

JJT
  (2:02 PM)

he's human. We've all screwed up. But that was an awful call

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Thanks JJT. Looking at how things shaped up for the Mavs this season, is there anything that Mavs fans should be encouraged about looking ahead to 2013-14?

JJT
  (2:03 PM)

nope. They're gonna miss playoffs again next year unless Dirk is 2nd best player on the team. Period.

traci (napa)

the Cowboys scouting department did a pretty good job last year finding players off the street, why do they have such a hard time getting the draft right?

JJT
  (2:04 PM)

64,000 question. But they have added Murray, Dez, Bruce Carter, Sean Lee, Dwayne Harris and Tyron Smith in the last few years

Mike (Easton, PA)

I've seen some questions on various chats about the Cowboys taking Tavon Austin at 18. Why would they consider that? Considering their o-line, d-line, and safety issues and the strengths with pass-catchers (Bryant, Austin [when healthy], Harris, Witten, Hanna, Beasley), why would anyone want a 1st round WR?

JJT
  (2:06 PM)

I hate hypotheticals, but hypothetically speaking: if the top 5 OL were gone, the top 3 DL were gone and Vacarro was gone. If Austin was there and let's say the Cowboys have him 5th on their board, then I'd take him. It gives you a dynamic player who can play in the slot and do some things and it might allow you to cut Miles Austin the next year. It's not the preferred choice, but it's better than trading down for the sake of trading down

JJT
  (2:06 PM)

nice chat today. Sorry about the technical issues. Talk to u next week.
