Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

Thanks for stopping by on short notice. This is an impromptu Jets chat session. With all the Revis stuff flying around, we figured why not? So let's get started.

Greg (Midtown)

Hi Rich,Any chance the Jets actually keep Revis and he plays the season? Is it just a matter of time before he's a goner?

Rich Cimini
  (2:06 PM)

Greg, I don't see that scenario at all. He's a goner, it's just a matter of when. I have a strong feeling it will be before the draft. I think the Bucs will make an offer that Idzik will realize he won't be able to get later on.

desmond (rochester)

rich who says no to a kapernick for revis straight up trade ? jets should do it niners surely would if proposed ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:10 PM)

Is there something funny in the water up there in Rochester? Hello? There is absolutely no chance of a Kaepernick-Revis trade. The 49ers have what most every team covets -- a young, athletic, rocket-armed quarterback with unlimited potential, and on a cheap contract for at least another year. You don't trade those guys. For anyone.

Ben (Fairfield, CT)

Rich there are a lot of people out there who would show up at a work sponsored activity for 3 million injuried knee or not. Revis already held out twice and I understand where the team is coming from with their position to have him come to workouts. How is this any different from other workout bonus players receive and why are the jets getting blasted for this?

Rich Cimini
  (2:12 PM)

The point is, he's not looking to skip the entire two month program. He just wants to be excused for a couple of weeks. I think the Jets could be a little flexible here.

Nick (Mahopac)

I have a feeling the Jets are waiting on seeing if Milliner is there at the 9th spot before making a move with Tampa. What do you think Rich?

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

No, I don't think that's the case. The Jets have 2 starting CBs under contract and, if they trade Revis, CB still won't be a major need.

Matt (NY)

Agree of disagree, Kyle Wilson is a below avg starting cornerback?

Rich Cimini
  (2:15 PM)

No, he's not a below-average CB. Believe me, there are some below-average CBs in the league, and he's not one of them. Ideally, you'd like him as your No. 3, but I think you can get by with him at No. 2 as long as he has a strong supporting cast.

Aaron (Syracuse, NY)

Rich, any truth to the report that the Bucs are willing to offer a 1st, 3rd and 6th rounder in the upcoming draft for Revis? Initially, they were only going to offer the 1st rounder in the 2014 draft, so this sounds like a potential major breakthrough. If this is the case, the Jets need to jump on this ASAP! very good value.

Rich Cimini
  (2:16 PM)

Why would the Jets jump on it ASAP? The offer will be there in two weeks. Idzik is playing his hand correctly. You wait to see if another suitor emerges. If so, you have a bidding war. No harm in waiting.

Andrew (NY)

The Jets need a playmaker in the worst way. Please tell me they are seriously considering Tavon Austin

Rich Cimini
  (2:19 PM)

I agree, I think Austin would be perfect for the Jets. They could use him at WR, RB and PR. He'd bring home-run ability to the offense, something they desperately need. Many would say 9 is too high for Austin, but I say why not?

Peter (Syosset)

Is it just me or have the few moves Idzik has made so far actually seem to make sense for the team. I know they're not splashy but Goodson, Barnes, and Garay are all decent options and we didn't break the bank on them. Do you think there will be any more significant FA signings, like at the saftey or guard spots with the remaining cap space we have?

Rich Cimini
  (2:20 PM)

The remaining signings will be of the same ilk -- 1-year deals for modest money. I think they'll sign a guard, a safety and perhaps a TE -- all hold-the-fort guys.

Larry (Glen rock)

Will idzik be calling the shots on draft day? He seems to have muzzled Rex and the news leaks from jet camp. The circus atmosphere seems over.

Rich Cimini
  (2:21 PM)

Yes, Idzik will be calling the shots. Rex will have input, just as he always has ... but probably not as much as in the past. It's Idzik's show.

Jon (Syracuse, NY)

What unexpected pick could be made at the 9th pick in the draft that would have people outside the organization surprised?

Rich Cimini
  (2:22 PM)

Interesting question, Jon. A guard (Warmack or Cooper) would be a surprise. So would a QB (Smith) or a safety (Vaccaro).

Jon (Syracuse, NY)

Any chance jets go anything other than OLB with their first round pick? Does Geno Smith get picked if hes there?

Rich Cimini
  (2:24 PM)

I'd be very surprised if Geno Smith is the pick. There are a lot of questions about Smith, and I don't think you'd want to hand your franchise to him. Other than OLB, it could be a DL or a WR.

George (Westfield)

Highly unlikely Dion Jordan falls to 9. If you're the Jets, do you go with a pass rusher like Mingo/Ansah or get a solid Revis replacement in Dee Milliner? What do you think Idzik is thinking?

Rich Cimini
  (2:27 PM)

You're right, George, it's unlikely that Jordan falls to 9. Ansah is a physical freak, but he's basically the same kind of player as Coples. Do they really need another DE? Mingo, I think, is a reach. He's an undersized pass rusher with suspect production. I suppose Milliner could be the pick if he's clearly the highest on the board, but I don't think they're looking for a CB, even if they trade Revis.

Len (CT)

Any chance Jets pickup Tavon Austin ? Should they go for a QB this year or wait until next year?Len

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

I think they'd pick a QB if it's an obvious value. For instance: If EJ Manuel slips to 39, I think they'd have to think long and hard. Otherwise, I think their mindset is to focus on a QB in '14.

John (America)

Who do you like more if they fall to #9 - Dion Jordon or Star?

Rich Cimini
  (2:29 PM)

I'd take Jordan in a second.

Brian (Ramsey NJ)

Hey Rich, thanks for taking some time. Has there been any recent news regarding possible safeties for the Jets? In my opinion I'm not sure why they let Bell leave, not to mention Landry. I know the cap is tight, but the two safeties we have now won't cut it, and Bell would have been a relatively cheap re-sign.

Rich Cimini
  (2:30 PM)

The two starting safeties haven't walked through the door yet, Brian. They will sign a vet (perhaps Dawan Landry) and draft a safety in the first 3 rounds.

Doug (Pittsburgh)

Desmond, that was the dumbest statement of all time.

Rich Cimini
  (2:31 PM)

Easy, folks, let's not have any in-fighting here. We're not the 2011 Jets.

David (NJ)

Is there one player in particular the Jets have their eye on to draft, or is there 3-5 guys that they have narrowed things down to?

Rich Cimini
  (2:34 PM)

All they do it set up a draftboard, based on grades. By draft day, they will have 9 players they'd be comfortable picking at No. 9, knowing they're assured of getting one of those players. They can target players, sure. If the No. 1 guy on their board slips to, say, No. 7, maybe they think so much of him that they call the Cards and propose a deal to trade up. That's how it works.

Brian C (Franklin Lakes, NJ)

Where do you think Margus Hunt falls? Would he still be around at pick #39?

Rich Cimini
  (2:35 PM)

I think there's a chance he could be there. But as I stated early, how many DEs can you draft -- Wilkerson, Coples. Hunt is raw, but I suspect he'll go late 1, early 2.

Taylor (Manhatta)

Rich, do you see the Jets taking a "top 5" RB in this years draft such as bernard, lacy, ball, bell, etc. They need a RB with home run potential and can also catch the ball out of the backfield which is vital in WCO. Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (2:36 PM)

If Lacy slips to 39, then, yes, I could see it. I could see Bell in the third round. Don't think they're as high on Ball as some others. They signed Goodson and they think he can be that guy. We'll see.

CeeJay (Spring Valley)

Hey Rich, Love you work! With the Jets owning the 9th overall pick and rumors swirling about them possibly trading Revis for the 13th pick.. what are the chances they could get Geno Smith at 9 and Tavon Austin at 13? Would that not bring excitement to a lackluster offense?

Rich Cimini
  (2:38 PM)

Thanks, CeeJay. It would generate buzz, all right, but buzz doesn't win games. Austin would be great at 13, but Smith? I don't think he's a franchise QB. I'd rather have Manuel or Nassib in the second round.

Marc (NYC)

I know they have holes to plug on D, but if Rex is the defensive mastermind, you should be able to find guys he can coach up in later rounds - so why is nobody talking about an OT like Lane Johnson for the Jets, wouldn't Idzik be best off putting Sanchez/Garrard in a better position to succeed by keeping them upright / under less duress. Seems like a building block you can rely on for the next decade is exactly what they need and something they haven't really focused on other than the Ducasse disaster since the Brick/Mangold draft.

Rich Cimini
  (2:40 PM)

The Jets like Austin Howard as their RT. They gave him a $2 million tender. I don't see that as a need.

Chris (Calgary, AB)

How do you think Sanchez does in the new offensive system that being put in to place? I really want the Jets to trade back and grab more picks to help . Thoughts? Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (2:41 PM)

Sanchez has to clean up his fundamentals (a lot) to succeed in this offense. There's no room for sloppy footwork. He also has to improve his accuracy -- a lot. Otherwise, he's perfect for the system. lol.

Brian (Staten Island)

i assume that in the Bucs' reported offer of a 1,3 and 6 that the 1 is in '14. If Bucs move off that and make the 1 in '13, does this deal get done?

Rich Cimini
  (2:42 PM)

You would think the Jets would take that deal -- if that is the deal the Bucs are prepared to offer. But like I said, we still have 2 weeks.

Bobby (Morristown, NJ)

Why is it being viewed as such a negative if the draft compensation for Revis is all in 2014? If I am Idzik I look at it like this, in 2014 I will a lot of cap room, I could have 4 picks in top 50 or so of the draft, and possibly be hiring a new Head Coach. Why "waste" picks this year when there is so much in question regarding the Head Coach?? Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (2:44 PM)

He wouldn't be wasting picks. If you can get 2 first-round picks into the fold a year ahead of time, you do it. What if they take TB's first rounder in 14 and the Bucs make the playoffs? It could end up being the 25th pick. Too much uncertainty.

Anthony (Canadian in Michigan )

Hey Rich, sorry big blue had to beat your orange on Saturday. Few questions regarding the Jets and the draft. The safety and tight end talent pool is clearly there early in the draft as well as the middle rounds. Clearly, the Jets need to draft a safety. Could you see them signing a veteran like Charles Woodson though to fill the other spot? Also, can you really see Cumberland and Hayden Smith being starters this year while a young TE is groomed on the sidelines. Thanks as always.

Rich Cimini
  (2:46 PM)

Yes, I can see an older vet like a Woodson alongside a rookie. Cumberland could end up being the starter (he played 55% of the snaps last year), but I think they're looking for an upgrade. Smith still has a ways to go.

Naveen (Birmingham, UK )

Rich, your prediction on when Revis deal gets done?

Rich Cimini
  (2:47 PM)

April 24.

Jose (Norwalk)

How come there is not more interested teams in a player the caliber of Revis?

Rich Cimini
  (2:49 PM)

Two words: Knee surgery. That's why it was ridiculous to think a trade would happen last month, as one report suggested. Not many teams want to pay major bucks to a CB coming off ACL surgery. The Bucs apparently do, but they're in the extreme minority.

Panda (Wantage, NJ)

What's the likelihood of Garrard taking the starting QB job before Week 1?

Rich Cimini
  (2:50 PM)

I wouldn't rule it out, but it's less than 50 percent.

Dec (Ireland)

Hey Rich, thanks for the impromptu chat. I've been reading that the Bucs are offering a 1st, 3rd and a 6th for Revis. Assuming this is true are these 2013 picks? If so, I'd take chat - the jets would then have 20 picks over the next 2 drafts (I'm figuring they get at least 3 comp picks next year).

Rich Cimini
  (2:51 PM)

You're welcome, Dec. I don't know if they're '13 picks, but I can tell you this: The Jets will be making a lot of draft picks over the next 2 yrs.

Ryan (NYC)

Rich -- I don't understand this Revis controversy. How often in your experience do teams or agents go by "the spirit" and not the letter of a contract?

Rich Cimini
  (2:53 PM)

He wants to be excused from 2 wks of workouts. What's the big deal?

Mark (San Diego)

The Jets were ranked second in pass D last year w/o Revis. I think Bell and Landry had a lot to do with that. What do you see playing safety for the Jets this year? Can they still be that good this year?

Rich Cimini
  (2:54 PM)

That No. 2 ranking in pass defense is totally deceptive. Don't buy into it. The numbers were low because teams didn't have to pass a lot against the Jets. Opponents were playing from ahead, running the ball against a porous run defense.

David (Manhattan)

Strong supprting cast for Wison are not a 6th and 7th round safties from 2012 draft class.

Rich Cimini
  (2:55 PM)

They won't be the starters. I was referring mostly to the pass rush, a CB's best friend.

Reid (New York, NY)

Rich, What are your feelings about the jets Picking up Matt Barkley in the second round. You think he would be a good fit in their system? I am little nervous about USC qb's after seeing Sanchez, Leinart and Palmer.

Rich Cimini
  (2:56 PM)

You should be nervous. Personally, I'd stay away. Arm strength is an issue, and it would be magnified in windy, cold-weather conditions.

Jim (Bridgewater)

Rich- "With the 9th selection of the 2013 NFL draft, the NY Jets select....."

Rich Cimini
  (2:57 PM)

Kyle Brady. Oh, wait, that was 1995.

John (Long Island)

Jeeze Rich, Good thing I follow your twitter regularly... Anyway, I am getting tired of this Revis talk. Is there anything Jets related that isn't talked about much worth talking about?

Rich Cimini
  (2:58 PM)

Get used to it, John. It will dominate for the next 20 days or so.

Brendan (Ireland)

If the falcons restructure Matt Ryan's contract before the draft do you see the jets playing the falcons against the Bucs for a trade, could that be a realistic situation?

Rich Cimini
  (2:58 PM)

Interesting. I've heard rumors about the Falcons.

Gary (Chappaqua, New York)

Rich we hear a lot of talk about Ricky Sapp on Twitter, but from an insiders perspective I'm curious to get your opinion on him. Are the coaches high on him / can he realistically be the Week 1 starting OLB?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

I'd be shocked if he's a starter. He can be a rotational guy, if he could ever stay healthy. Has the ability to line up as a DLM, which helps. But I don't think he's the answer.

Chris (New Paltz)

Is Cordarrelle Patterson a realistic wish at #9. Does he make it to there and would he be there top WR choice

Rich Cimini
  (3:00 PM)

Way too risky at 9. I'd take Austin over him.

True or False: After this season, Mark Sanchez will never start another game in the NFL for any team

Rich Cimini
  (3:00 PM)

Reid (New York, NY)

What is more realistic, the jets picking up Geno Smith in the first round or waiting till the Second Round to take Matt Barkley?

Rich Cimini
  (3:01 PM)

Do I have a third choice?

Anthony (Queens)

Rich, do you believe Idzik is a production guy or potential guy? Case in point is Jarvis or Mingo? Hard to go against past production

Rich Cimini
  (3:02 PM)

Great question. Great example. Wish I had an answer.

Dec (Ireland)

Rich, any truth to the rumours you're having this chat to distract yourself from the National Championship game build up?

Rich Cimini
  (3:02 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny that claim.

Rich Cimini
  (3:03 PM)

Wow, that hour flew by. A great rally by you guys, flooding me with questions after a sluggish start. I'm sure we'll be chatting a few more times before the draft. Stay tuned. It's gonna be a wild couple of weeks. Thanks. Rich
