Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

Let's chat it up!

Max (London )

Any chance of a Charles Woodson return to Oakland before he rides off gloriously into the sunset?

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

Why on Earth would he want to do that?

kc (oakland)

See the Niners moving up for Austin? What would it take?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Bet it would take more than the Niners could/should offer considering how late they pick. I could see a trade up or two during the entire draft process, but also could see them chilling with those first two picks and landing really promising TE and Safety...then start wheeling and dealing to start landing quality over quanity

Zach (Spokane)

Do either Von Miller or JJ Watt have a chance to break the single season sack record, or possibly the total career sack record further down the road?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

I love Watt-who doesn't, but I bet this past year is the most sacks he ever posts. He is an interior player! Amazing, but just such big numbers. Miller could do it. But who is going to take attention away from Miller now from opposing pass pro schemes?

tim (ny)

If Fisher is not there at #5 who should the Lions look at taking?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

To me, the Lions pick is very easy-best OT or DE available. Fisher would be a home run-no doubt. Would consider L Johnson as well, but otherwise, one of those DEs that can get after the QB

Mike (Ireland)

Matt, who are your favorite 2nd/3rd round receivers in this draft class?

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Guess it depends what you need, but Wheaton is going to be very valuable with his speed. Love Bailey's game too. Harper from K St might fall due to speed, but I like his game a lot too

Luke (Waterdown, Ontario)

What's your draft strategy for the Fish?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

MUST get a OT. It can be Winston as free agent (although sounds like he is going to Dallas), Albert in trade or Johnson as a trade up pick, which would prob cost them their 1st and 2nd. Albert would cost a 2nd. One of those moves has to get done, which leaves some picks-CB is next on my list

Anthony (Queens)

Based on all the Jets needs, how should Idzik approach the draft? Draft based on production or potential? Example: Jarvis Jones or Mingo?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Good question. Everything is just so unstable there. I think at this point, I would lean towards Safe. Not a ton of risks. Build a nucleus that is young and "Your Guys"

Mike (Pgh)

Steelers match offer sheet to Sanders?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Just posted on this: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/68395/patriots-force-steelers-hand-with-sanders#comment

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

But I tend to think they don't match, which leaves them SO short at WR. Take the extra pick and extra cap space...but again, bet PGH isn't happy at all about this development

Lucio (Houston)

I know the drafting depends on how players fall, but if all positions were graded equally and the players available were graded the same, what position would you draft with the Texans first round pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

WR...I think NT (Jesse Williams?) is also a major need, as is ILB...I don't think I am as high on Houston's roster as most "Experts"

Tarek (NYC)

I think Max was wondering if he would retire as a Raider but I think he has been in GB now as long as he was in Oakland if not longer. But he will be more famous for the Tuck Rule than the SB he won in GB. Sadly.

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Prob all good points...Still, "Hall of Famer Woodson is...yes"-Yoda

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Dude, you're up against Barry Sanders right now! Where would you rank him among all-time RBs???

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Very cool....interviewed Barry on the podcast over the summer-track that down in the archives. I have him VERY near the top. Maybe third. Two of my favs that I think are often underrated though are E Campbell and The Juice

Johnny (Denver)

Is Marcus Lattimore a fit for the Broncos in the third round?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Very much so...and I think that is about where he goes....late third to a contender

Matt P (Colorado Springs)

Any updates on the Broncos DE situation?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

I like Ayers and Wolfe is okay on early downs. Miller obviously acts much like a DE on throwing downs. I bet Freeney still ends up there and they draft one high as well

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

AC/DC "Let There Be Rock"

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Back to Yoda real quick...during the slow time (July), I might make it mandatory that we all speak as Yoda does.

Tom (NH)

Is Sanders a legit deep threat for Brady & Co?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Doesn't play real big to go up and get the ball deep downfield, but he does have speed. He is best after the catch though with quickness and vision.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What do you think of Keenan Allen after running 4.7's? I mean Von ran a 4.49...or is he a guy that you just believe in the film?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Not sweating it. Supposedly still isn't real healthy. Doesn't look like a 4.7 guy on tape. Coudl make him a steal.

Lou (RI)

"The Patriots, win the AFC they will?"

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

We will do this in July Lou, but I do love the effort. Two horse race in AFC it is....Broncos or Pats

Jeff (Nashville)

I'm getting annoyed at GB drafting OL or OLB in the 1st round every year, but...don't they kinda have to do that again?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Yup

Jack (Scotland)

Could you see JAX using their high 2nd on Margus Hunt and play him like Red Bryant in SEA?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Maybe, they don't have that Bryant type on their roster right now. But not sure Hunt is that guy either. Stout enough? Hunt reminds me more of Watt-although that isn't close to fair to Hunt

Sean (Los Angeles)

We chatted last week about the potential Winfield fit with the Seahawks. Well, he is in Seattle now... any inside info telling you he is getting a contract done?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

No inside info here, but again-PERFECT fit! Rich get much richer. Winfield can still really play and is a superb slot CB

Tarek (NYC)

On to something you may be, hmmph. Love Yoda speak.

Patrick (Warner Robins, Ga)

If Lacy is there at 26, do the Packers take him? It would assist Aaron Rodgers staying upright with a very good running game.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

It would and a good fit considering who else they have, but my hunch is they would pass...for OL or OLB!

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Once teams get to assess their drafts can you see a team with a young, inexperienced safety bringing in Woodson as a mentor type player?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

For sure...but only a contending team

Tom (California)

Are you suprised about lack of interest in Danario Alexander? I know about his knees, but I figured if nothing else a team with tons a cap space (Cleveland) would give him a big enough 1 yr offer that SD wouldn't match

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

I am suprised based on what he has done on the field, but that one HAS to be all about his knees

Paul (Albany, OR)

Matt, can we revisit history for just a moment please - back when it was Bradford or Suh for the Rams I was a big Suh fan, and he apparently is a knucklehead. But football wise, with a few years behind us, who should the Rams have drafted and why? Thank you.

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Suh is a better player today than Bradford is,but I still say Bradford-who I do not love and think is very much in a Prove It Year...but I also think he can become a Franchise QBs...and Franchise QBs make the world go round

B (NC)

Any rumblings about the Giants being interested in Clabo or Winston? Or are they really content to let Diehl and Brewer battle it out for the league's worst starting tackle award?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

I kinda like Brewer...I kinda don't like Diehl-as a starter. Bet they wait until post-draft, but those seem like legit names to consider for NYG

Paul (Albany, OR)

Grumbling from St. Louis that they may like Franklin over Lacy - posturing or might they grab him? And is it in the first round or can they wait until their spot in the second to get him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Can see why any team might prefer Franklin to Lacy, but if I am STL, I am not going RB in Round 1...I just ALL OVER Cooper/Warmack with that first pick if available...Vacarro otherwise if there. Otherwise, WR I suppose-and they should have several to pick from

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

If DJ Fluker fell to the Broncos, should they consider him? Or is he redundant to their current RT, Orlando Franklin?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Nah, Franklin played well and they signed Vasquez-Fluker might be a better OG than OT...kinda like Osemele

David (Halifax)

Why is andre smith still a FA? Where do you think he ends up?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

This one is odd...don't even hear his name with any visits, etc. Makes me think he is a Bengal

Kyle (St. Louis)

Many experts have said that Bradford hasn't had the players around him to succeed. Does he now with J. Long and J. Cook?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Those two are far from sure things, but the OL should be MUCH better, esp if they snag one of those stud OGs...I also like Givens and Quick....again, Put up or Shut up year for Bradford

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Maybe Jonathon Franklin is more simiilar to Chris Johnson, Pead types..seems like that may be what Coach Fisher prefers..

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Decent point, but he has two of them already and while Franklin is more like CJ than Lacey is, Franklin doesn't have that kind of long speed

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Which player(s) would shock you the most if they were drafted in the top 10?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

If ANY long snapper goes in the Top 10, I would be utterly shocked. But seriously, hmmm...guess you should structure it the other way: who wouldn't shock you...Either or both OGs (which could mean four or five out of top 10 are OL), Austin

Darth Maul (Tatooine)

Doesn't GB have more pressing D-Line needs than OLB? Pickett is getting up there in age, Worthy is hurt, and Raji was so inconsistent and they may let him walk after resigning CMIII and Rodgers.

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Would say those needs are about equal. DL is a need for sure-but their outside pass rush isn't good enough. They know much more about Perry now that we do...we shall see how high they are on him. But good point by you

Jacob (Omaha)

Which WR in the draft do you see as the "best fit" for the Vikings in the 1st round?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

They need speed. Patterson

Ross (NY)

Where would you rank Decker/Thomas duo in the NFL? I got them after White/Jones..

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Well, the DEN Trio is awfully tough! As for those two, love Thomas, but not so hot on Decker...ATL's are better...Nicks and Cruz too if both healthy I think. That's about it. GB is loaded, but their beauty is depth

Maxwell (NY)

2 years $3 million for Dawan Landry. Gotta like what Idzik is doing

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Ys, I do...he has impressed thus far...Landry is solid...and solid is good enough

Geoff (DC)

Half way through and no Revis comment? Would you trade #13 for the Island? What kind of season do you expect from him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

I would trade #13 for The Island if I were TB...I think Revis is a Hall of Fame CB with 8ish more great seasons ahead of him

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Are you kind of surprised no one has touched Karlos Dansby? Guy is very above average, wisht eh Broncos would bring him in...

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

VERY above average indeed! Not a big need position, but would be upgrade for DEN, would have preferred him to DJ Williams in CHI...BALT?

Harry (Babylon, NY)

How much of a factor is Tavon Austin's height when teams look at him - say he was 6'-1" 200 with the same everything else - would he be a no brainer top 5 pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

If his weight went along with it, yes-Top 5...but he is LITTLE...not close to even Harvin's size. More worried about him being 180 lbs soaking wet than his height...some LB is going to drill him...it will happen

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

Some see two qb's in top ten, others say none. Which is it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Only Geno at most...the Kolb/Palmer/Flynn moves assured that I think

Drew (Green Bay)

Where do you see Justin Hunter going in the draft? He has the tools to be a Top 15 pick.

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Just drops a LOT of passes and doesn't play tough over the middle...still, he could be a Vike

Al (Wausau, WI)

Matt, assuming the Vikings go WR with one of their 2 first-round picks (would LOVE to see Jennings and Patterson there!), would you suggest DT, MLB, or CB for their other first-round pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Much like MIA MUST get a OT, MINNY MUST get a WR with one of those first rounders. Other than that, and maybe a OG, I would totally go Best D Player available for Minny with every other pick

Rob (San Antonio)

Does Palmer have enough left to help out the Cards? I know he is better that what they had but I am not convinced he is the answer.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

He has enough to help-and I am operating under the assumption that the OL will be improved...but he is not The Answer

John (Wisc)

I really am thinking the Packers go DT with their 1st or 2nd round Pick. How would you feel about adding John Jenkins in Round 2?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Oh I like Jenkins! More than just a Casey Hampton NT type...but doubt he lasts that long in Round 2

Brad (Beverly, Ma)

Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Most Def

Rob (MN)

Any chance Minnesota moves up, and if they do who would they go for?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Maybe if there is a WR run, but right now, I think they are really sitting in a good spot-as are the Rams...great spot to pick, esp with two first rounders

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

why are you down on Houston's roster? They got the best safety available (accoding to them) in free agency, who was able to beat Bellchik & the Pats twice for a little more money this year, but long-term related saved a lot of money to try and extend both Watt

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Not saying the roster is junk, but I don't see it as one of the better ones in the league. Don't think they have handled the past two offseasons all that well-much tougher being the Hunted rather than the Hunter. And not huge on Schaub

Dan (DC)

Edelman re-signed by Pats. If Sanders ends up a Patriot are they set at WR or do you see them drafting one as well?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Still gotta draft someone with size...Hunter?

Corey (D.C.)

Why do teams like Seattle and SF (and others) go out and get backup QBs that simply cant run the same offense as the starter? Dont get me wrong, I dont make a big deal out of backups because if your starter goes down your season is toast anyway, but still, I dont get it.

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

A little surprising, but in those cases, with those Ds and running games, a true "Game Manager" QB might be good enough for SEA and SF to win plenty of games 13-10ish and go back to just grinding out wins

John (Wisc)

What do you think about Datone Jones as a 3-4 DE?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Like him an awful lot in that role-as well as an interior pass rusher on throwing downs-as long as it is a penetrating 3-4 scheme....not great hold-the-point player

tony ((owosso))

you forget kurtis the pats spanked houston... twice... ed reed will not be the difference... what do you think matt?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

I actually think Reed might be a slight downgrade from Quin right now...but that locker room could use a guy like Reed for sure-with rings/Hall of Fame credentials

Craig (Braintree, MA)

I haven't been thrilled by the stuff I read/hear about the WRs. I know that people have to find their holes so they can rate them but can you sell me that there are wide receivers who deserve to be in the first round.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

First round-Yes, but not Top 10 like most years. Certainly not a Julio/Calvin type-or anyone close. But, this is a very deep WR draft and will be good ones in Round 3

Tarek (NYC)

Do you think Tommy Kelly will have a great year with NE? I'm sure BB can get the most out of him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

They have enough DTs to rotate and keep Kelly fresh, which is key. Kelly, when fresh and motivated, can really be a problem up the middle...and the Pats have gotten very little interior pass rush...great signing

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Who will be better next year - David Wilson or Doug Martin?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Martin...far more touches...I like Wilson and expect a break out season, but A Brown isn't going away and Coughlin isn't easily convinced on reliability

Mac (CT)

If Dallas lands Winston and drafts Warmak would that make that offense click?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Now that would be an upgraded OL!!! I love it...Romo fan here, not a Murray fan, but yes, that could be an awesome passing game

Quinn (Apopka)

do you see the Jaguars being willing trade partners for any pick willing to take less to get more bodies in camp?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Sounds about right...thinking they will take Floyd at #2, but trading back would be fantastic for them...same with Raiders...those two rosters stink

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Def Leppard "Photograph"...my boy Murr Man and I totally wore the Pyromania tape out in junior high

David (Nevada)

Do you expect the read option to last? Seems like it increases the chance of getting the QB blasted.

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Sure does! And EVERY DCoordinator will be studying it to no end this offseason. It will last more than the Wild Cat, but will not be a staple of anyone's O in two years.

Ross (NY)

Have the Cardinals given up on Ryan Williams?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Don't think so, but can't totally trust him either...adding Mend was smart

joe (uk)

How do you think Chandler Jones is going to do this season? can he become like von miller aldon smith as a pass rusher?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Not as dynamic as those guys, but I love Jones...Jared Allen type? Long body and strong/limber...going to be a star

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

To your scouting eye, is there an attribute that you look for that Colin Kaepernick DOESN'T have?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Nope

Paul (Albany, OR)

Can the Rams go OL and Safety in the first round and still have someone like Wheaton available when they pick in the second?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

For sure...that would be my plan...I am in the minority, but I don't think Cook/Quick/Givens/2nd or third round WR is such a terrible stable to throw to...If I am STL, I would LOVE one of those two OGs first and foremost...that OL now has four quality starters-just needs an OG

Jon (CT)

Hey Matt, let's say the Jets convince the Bucs to include the #13 pick in a Revis deal and Mingo and Jarvis Jones are on the board there. Who should be the pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Not sure that NYJ would pass on either of those guys with their first pick, let alone TBay's first rounder. I prefer Jones

Tarek (NYC)

"Better to burn out, than fade away", love Leppard.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Oh they are strong Bro...very

Gibb (Ga)

is their a possibility that McCoy will start for 49ers

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Over CK? Never in 100 years

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Jimmy Page and The Black Crows Live "Custard Pie"....Oh Baby!!!

Blueman (Indy)

Please if you go better to burn out than fade away you really have to credit Neil Young.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

That you do...very much so

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Everyone chatting with Barry now? I can understand that, but some pretty crappy questions rolling in right now

Kev (Chicago)

In the NFC, is it SF, SEA, then everyone else? Or ATL/GB on that level? Seems like those will be the teams for the foreseeable future.

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Just like in AFC, there are two teams in the NFC (SEA/SF)...then everyone else...but unlike the AFC, there is that next tier that you mention

Harry (Babylon, NY)

How does Patterson compare to Stephen Hill?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Not as much of a straight line guy...much more agile and dangerous with the ball

Kev (Chicago)

How close are my Bears?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

CHI had a great offseason and are set up well for the Draft to take value..close...also love the coaching change

Blueman (Indy)

Realistic numbers for DHB with the Colts, and are the numbers as important as the threat he will be to go deep every play?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

The threat is more important...thinking 45/800/5ish

John (Wisc)

Do you see the Eagles looking at EJ Manual? Do they trade up for him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Philly doesn't need much...could take best available in Round 1, trade up a few for Manuel with their 2nd rounder, trade Foles and keep being aggressive with picks on best available

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Thinking of Barry..rank the 2000 yd-season club...Barry, OJ, TD, CJ, Jamal Lewis?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Wow: Barry, Juice, TD, Lewis, CJ

Jacob (Omaha)

Do you see Greg Jennings having the ability to be a true #1 WR for the Vikings? And how much do you think he and Kyle Rudolph will help each other?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Jennings isn't a true #1 WR any more, but there are not 32 #1 WRs on the planet either. And of course, this will be the Peterson show. Let's look at this way, add a OG somewhere and a WR in round 1...that gives you a very good OL, Rudolph, Peterson, Jennings, First Round WR amongst other things around Ponder...that should be good enough of a supporting cast. Put up or shut up Christian!

Chris (Cleveland)

Miller and Jordon both there for the Browns at 6, who do you take? They are so thin at CB but pass rushers seem key in the league.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Very well said...Millner fits much bigger need and they don't have that early 2nd rounder, which stings. But Jordan is the much better prospect-I go with Jordan

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Folks, that is a wrap! Adios!
