We just completed the hoops season and the championship game was off the charts. Unsung heros. You could have scripted a movie with Spike and Luke Hancock. He comes off the bench and hits the threes. Louisville marches on and wins the title. It was just amazing. I had a great fall sitting with Brad Nessler and then calling the title game for ESPN International.
Hi Dick, Great game Monday night. Did Coach Beilien ride the Spike train a little too long particularly in the 2nd half?
We can sit here and second guess, but when he was as hot as he was, you ride it. I don't agree with the critics that say you bring in Burke with two fouls. It was the right decision.
Can you believe that Spike Albrecht got on fire earlier in the game? Wow!
I thought I was watching Larry Bird! I thought it was the kid from French Lick, Indiana! Here is a kid averaging a couple of points a game and he's hitting all of the shots. But the Spike train ran out of gas.
With Indiana losing Oladipo, Zeller, Hulls and Watford will IU have any chance to repeat as BIG10 Champs? MSU has to be the early favorite unless Harris or Payne decide to declare.
Depending on how the new kids blend in, they have a tremendous class coming in. But losing Oladipo and Zeller is not surprising. Both are rated very highly. Chad Ford has Oladipo in the top 5 and Zeller at No. 11. People look at his skills, his size and his potential, I think he goes higher than that.
Between N.Carolina and Duke, who would most likely win the ACC?
It depends on what's coming back at UNC. We're waiting to hear on UNC's big three. If they all come back, I give the edge to UNC. Duke has Jabari Parker coming in and they have their transfer stepping in.
Because Michigan made it to the National Championship and 4 teams in the Sweet 16 were from the Big Ten, should the Big Ten still be considered the most overrated conference in college basketball.
I don't see them as overrated as all. You rate the conference on what they do all year long and all year long they were a great conference. Great coaching. Great players. It's not just based on tournament time. The tournament is based on matchups and all that.
Dick, I am curious why you don't have syracuse in your top 6 for next year, I know that they are losing mcw, but they have a very good incoming recruiting class, and the transfer from duke. If cj fair comes back, he will be one of the best players in the country.
It's so tough. You have the top 6 and you only have so many teams. You base it on who's coming back and who's not. My real top 25 list will be done in September when we know who is where. Right now it's just a guessing game.
Hi Dick, as usual at this time of the year guys are declaring for the NBA draft. Some guys clearly aren't ready. Is it the lure of fame and fortune or taking bad advice?
It's a combination of everything. There are egos involved and there are dollars. I agree that many are not ready, but they're drafted on potential. I was looking at Chad Ford's mock draft and he has three Michigan kids going early. They'll get top dollars.
How can a team like Duke get slaughtered by Lville, while Wich St almost beats them? I say coaching... If Petino had Dukes talent over the years, he'd have 10 CShips
No, I don't buy that at all. How can you question Coach K? It was Louisville's pressure defense. They had the emotion with the Kevin Ware injury. That is crazy to sit and question Coach K's coaching in that game. Give credit where it is due. Louisville held them without a basket for 8 minutes. That was quite a defensive spurt.
Dick, do you think rules should be put in play to prevent players from leaving school early to head to the NBA.
It's just not going to happen. It's a way of life right now. I would like to see two years as a minimum. The kids play with passion and pride. The enthusiasm and energy will not change.
Seriously! How good will we be next year? Also do you have an ear to the ground on Andrew Wiggins?
I was teasing Calipari that they'll be my preseason No. 1. They'll have veteran players to blend in with the young kids. That didn't have that this year. They'll be hard to beat. I was teasing Calipari that his second team might be a top 15 team in America.
From what you've heard or seen, exactly how good is Rodney Hood supposed to be for duke?
He's going to be very good. He's a talented player. He was talented at Mississippi State. He's stronger, bigger. He'll be a dynamite duo with Parker.
Xavier, surprise team in the big east next year?
Xavier did a solid job this year. They had some quality wins. They'll be a factor. That league will be dynamite. Real basketball crazy. Filled with unbelieveable talent. Great coaches. The excitement will be unreal.
If McGary and Robinson return, would Michigan be in your preseason top 5?
We'll have to see what other teams do, but if they come back with the guys they have coming in, they'd be right there in the argument.
With all the talent coming in next year for the Wildcats do u see them having any issues with coming together as a team like they did this past year. I know they have the most talent in the country but will they be the best team in your eyes? And if they get Andrew Wiggins could they possibly go 40 and 0?
That's a good question. That's always something you have to worry about. But John Calipari has proven over the years that he's able to make it work. This year, the problem was they didn't have any veterans, any stabilizers. They'll be concerned with only one thing, standing alone with the championship trophy. They kids two years ago only cared about winning, winning, winning.
Will the point guard Sean Miller has coming in be able to keep all the bigs, which now includes freshmen Aaron Gordon, happy? The lack of true point guard hurt them last year in my opinion. Your thoughts?
I think Arizona will be in the argument for a top team, no question. They had some scoring guards, but no true point guard. But they still had some great guard play.
Your opinion-Who on Michigan should declare or stay another year?
It's easy for us to say stay or go. We don't know their financial situation or their desire for academics. The bottom line is I think Robinson could have a dynamic sophomore year if he stays. He has the big body and he has some areas to work on. But everyone has to make decisions and I don't criticize them for making decisions. I might not agree. I respect their decisions. They can make millions with one decision.
Hi Dick, Louisville with it's 3rd National Championship, how would rank them with the other schools with multiple championship? And where would this game rank all-time in NCAA Tournament History?
Louisville has a great tradition. I think the big question people want to know if this was the best Louisville team. I have to go my era with the teams they had then. That was a great basketball team. But this year, they did everything they had to do and they won the title. It doesn't matter if they were the greatest of all time.
Your thoughts on the ACC with all the new teams added.
The ACC, with basketball, is growing up big time. Any time you add Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse, it's unbelievable. I just don't like what's happening in college athletics. It's sad to me that the Big East is coming to an end. It was a tremendous league. It's sad we won't see those rivalries.
Mr. Vitale, does the VBDI see another green jacket for Tiger this weekend?
I don't know much about golf. I put up on Twitter this morning that I don't know golf, but I know people. I see that smile on his face and he's got the swag back. He'll be tough, tough to beat. He's on the prowl!
where do you project mason plummlee in the draft? also your thoughts on dukes future with jabari parker
Any time you lose a player that's going to be drafted in the top 15, that's a big loss. Duke has had losses over the years. They regroup and reload. Mason came on strong and performed well during his college career. I look for him to be drafted from 12-17.
Will Maryland turn the corner in 2013 and become a consistent Top 20 program again?
The one thing they have to do is improve their preconference schedule. They loaded up on too many cupcakes and then it's a shock when you lose those conference games. They're moving in a positive direction. They've had solid play. It's hard to believe that I will not see Maryland in the ACC. That bothers me.
As a Rays fan, were you beside yourself on Marty Foster's call on strike three against Zobrist? You gotta love Joe Maddon, he's always professional and handles himself with dignity.
It was unbelievable. You look at the replay and the official himself said that he made a mistake. That was a sad, sad moment for baseball. That was not debatable.
Think the Cardinals can repeat next year?
Right now, they're celebrating this championship. Siva, Smith are going to the draft. New players, how do they blend? Pitino always has talent.
How would you evaluate Oregon going forward into next season?
They have some good young players there. You look at what Dana Altman has done is creating excitement. He's a solid tactician. I don't see them taking a backseat. I see them moving forward.
They'll be in the upper part of the Pac-12.
Dickie V. Any chance that Don Donoher gets into the Hall of Fame anytime soon? And, do my Dayton Flyers get an invite to the new Big East in the future?
It hasn't been decided yet. They have great basketball tradition. I remember them from my days in Detroit. This year, they didn't have the season they were projected to have. But you don't become a superstar in college athletics unless you recruit, recruit, recruit. It's all about getting the good players. Coach Wooden won all the titles and he was a great basketball mind, but don't you think that Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton and all those guys helped?
Right now, I'm really concentrating on my Dick Vitale Gala, and my goal to raise $1 million to help battle children's cancer. Bobby Bowden, Jim Calhoun, Bill Self will be honored. It will be phenomenal. We'll see out. Call immediately, 941-350-0580, because we're almost sold out. We'll have a number of celebrity coaches and former players. It should be a great, great night. We have a special video we'll show that was run on TV about a little girl named Lacy. She'll be there as well. Adrian Payne from Michigan State befriended her and he'll be there too.
My new book on motivation: "Getting a W in the Game of Life" is out. Every dollar made on the book goes to my goal to raise $1 million to fight cancer.
