Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Codey (Indiana)

Colts biggest needs heading into the draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:00 PM)

Cornerback, receiver, offensive line.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings everyone. Thanks for coming. Looking forward to a good hour.

Chris (Tenn)

Paul, it seems after the combine everyone is saying that Cooper may be a better guard than Warmack. Do you think the titans prefer one over the other if they go guard?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

My gut feeling says Warmack, but no one outside the building knows for sure.

Brian (Charlottesville, VA )

I love your stuff PK....but isn't Caldwell being happy staying at number 2 kind of a non-story story? What's he supposed to say "There is no one at number 2 that we can't live without and we'll move down to 5 for a few good bananas" ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

I understand your point. But given the overall interest in the NFL and the draft, almost anything anyone in control of the No. 2 pick says about the No. 2 pick qualifies as news on some level. And the trade part was secondary. Saying they have two guys they like there is bigger.

Ken (Indy)

Colts taking back the South this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

Should be a very good two-team race.

Brian (Charlottesville, VA )

Jaguars roster...more-talented/optimistic on April 11, 2012 or April 11, 2013 (feel free to factor in player development from last year)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

I feel better about the team, but not because of the roster. Because of Dave Caldwell and Gus Bradley.

Atzel (Texas)

Paul, prediction for you the Texans end up with Robert Woods within first 2 rounds either by trading back to get better value in the second or with first pick.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

I'd like that. And 27 may be a bit high for him depending on what receivers are still there, so a dip back would make sense.

Brian (Charlottesville, VA )

In your opinion, is Roy Miller a better player than Terrance Knighton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

In my opinion he's not going to wander and fade in and out like Knighton did. I expect he'll be more consistent. But will his highs match Knighton's highs? Maybe not. But when did we last see Knighton play at his high?

Ken (Indy)

Any chance cordarrelle patterson is available late first round formColts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Seems unlikely.

Zach (Flo Rida) [via mobile]

Any chance teams decide to go QB crazy and start drafting them in the early half of first allowing guys like Richardson, Jones, Mingo, and such to fall to the second half of the first?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

I don't have a good feeling about the QBs, and believe it would take multiple teams really forcing it for your senario to unfold. But I've written I think a team like the Titans certainly roots for QBs to disappear before their pick, pushing guys to them.

Joseph (Glendale, AZ)

I've been hearing from NFL experts Tennessee should draft either LG Jonathan Cooper or LG Chance Warmack. I don't understand this, considering the fact that they signed LG Andy Levitre last month to a big contract. Whats your input?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Cooper or Warmack would play right guard for the Titans, who have no clear-cut starter at the spot.

Zoltan (Budapest)

Dave Caldwell said the Jags really like 2 players at the 1/2 pick. Any guesses who that 2 might be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

I'd guess Dion Jordan is one of them. I'd hope Geno Smith is not the other.

Chris (Lubbock) [via mobile]

The right side of the Texans line still worries me. There was an obvious drop-off in the run game and it became terribly predictable as well with most runs going to the left. Could the Texans bypass a receiver in the first for a lineman instead?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

I certainly think an upgrade would make sense. But they've said and done nothing to indicate they will move away from Derek Newton.

Hanson (DC)

Colts faced a rebuild last year and drafted to quickly rebuild the offense.Since there is no franchise QB for the Jags to pick will they take a different route and just take best players possible or will they focus on one side of the ball this year and work on the other next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

The Colts were focusing on offense to surround Luck. Jaguars need to find the guys who need to be surrounded. Odds are they draft close to half and half.

justin (corpus christi )

Do you see brandon Lloyd heading to the Texans?...or which other wr may fit in ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

I think they are drafting their receiver.

Hanson (DC)

Colts trade 1st rd picks with 49ers and pick up a 2nd or 3rd rd pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

Sure. Probably don't get that much. And the 49ers need to want someone at 24.

Doug (MD)

Interesting you put OL, CB, and WR before a pass rusher in your Colts needs... reason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Accident. I should have included that. Though they talk like Walden is a three-down guy.

Kris (Nashville)

Any chance Michael Griffen gets cut with the additions at saftey?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

No. A big piece of a big salary has locked in as guaranteed.

Jon (Rhode Island)

I believe the Colts are a good DT short of having no holes in their D. However, they should consider taking a WR with some upside in the 1st round considering DHB is not a long term solution and Wayne is 34. What would you take with their 24th pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

With Ricky Jean Francois (swing tackle/end), Aubrayo Franklin, Brandon McKinney and Josh Chapman, they may not need a DT at all. But I certainly wouldn't say they are close to no holes on their D. I'd lean corner but be OK with receiver or offenive lineman or pass rusher.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (TN)

Was signed to mentor Jake or compete with him for the starting job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

Neither. To back Locker up. Mentoring is a bonus. It's not like you've done all that much in the league.

Sawyer10311 (Soaked, Texas)

Do draft picks count toward the salary cap the same as the rest of the roster? How does the cap hit for a team drafting late first round compare to that of a team drafting at the top?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

There is no cap hit until a guy is signed. When he signs, it's safe to presume he costs more than the 51st-most expensive guy on the roster. So he takes the place of that guy against the cap. More expensive at the top, for sure, but not in a killer way like it used to be.

Michael (Nashville, Tennessee)

I believe Tennessee needs an interior DL. I also believe we need a good 1-2 punch at the CB position because Alterraun Verner cant get the job done opposite Jason McCourty. Your take on this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

I'm OK with Verner starting, but I want him in the slot in nickel and if that means adding an outside guy who will start, great. Interior defensive line is a possibility, but with Sammie Hill, Jurrel Casey and Mike Martin, they've got a petty good three pack.

Guy Whimper (Unemployment Line)

Hey PK, remember me? What would make me more likely to get on a NFL roster again...continue playing tackle or swap out to TE....BTW, is Marcedes Lewis a better blocker than me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

You're not a tight end for sure.

Paul (Bloomington)

I think a lot of people feel that the best way to build a team is through the draft, which the Colts certainly did really well (it looks like thus far) last year. But then they go out and sign a bunch of defensive players this year.. Why dont they just stick to the draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

You only get so many draft picks. It's not like the Colts will pass when their name is called. They are still going to draft. Back end of the roster stunk last year. That won't be the case this year. They don't have to do one or the other, they can do both. They had a lot of money and have to spend a good share of it over time.

Jim (Jax)

How long does Gus get to get this team into the playoffs before being fired?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

At least three years.

Jason (Brooklyn, NY)

When do you think Geno will be drafted?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

I'd guess between eight and 12.

Jamal (WI) [via mobile]

You've said you suspect Ruston got his way over Munchak in the CJ roster decision. Any indications on how strong opinions were (namely Munchak)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

Maybe he settled down after some time passed. But I think there was a time when Munchak was very unhappy with the prospect of CJ long-term.

reality (in play)

Seriously, how do the Colts not win the division this year? Texans are declining, Jaguars are lost, and Titans are mediocre.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

Let's not get carried away with Texans declining. They have a lot of talent. A bad finish last year doesn't automatically carry over, just like a good one doesn't.

Blueman (Indy)

Will Coby Fleener playing split out be a reliable option should a wr not fall to the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

They have receivers. Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton, Darrius Heyward-Bey, LaVon Brazill. I'm sure Fleener will split out some, but it's not like they'll need to play him as if he's a receiver. And it's not like if they don't draft a receiver at 24 they can't take one later.

Reid (Jackson TN)

Any chance the Titans go CB like Xavier Rhodes at 10? Then hope they can land their guard at 40? Maybe Warford?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

Sure. I think 10 is probably a little high for Rhodes, however.

Fahad (Oklahoma)

Yes, A. Johnson is in his 30's and HOU doesn't have another vital WR, but HOU defense IMO collapsed in the 2nd half of 2012 because of the injuries they had at LB and they lost Barwin to FA. I'm thinking draft Manti T'eo in the draft. Are you with me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Nope. They need linebackers for sure. But I don't think they need that one, not in the first round.

Dan (Iowa)

I've been hearing the colts should look at safety with Bethea's contract up next year, which I honestly think is ridiculous. It would be smart to add depth, and Bethea is from the old regime, but to me Bethea is a guy you don't let get away if free agency.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

They need a third safety anyway. You draft a guy who can be third this year and gives you insurance for Bethea next year. You can't bank on re-signing a guy. But if they lost him next year and needed a replacement, they's have 2014 free agency and draft to replace him too.

TNTitans74 (Indy)

Any idea on how much Gregg Williams will be playing a part in the defense this year vs. Gray? Will Gray be up in the Box or will Williams be up there for better view of the field?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

I'm not sure they know who will be in the box and who will be on the field. I think Williams will want to be on the field. Gray remains the coordinator with play-calling power. To me, on defense, it's more important who's drawing up the plan than who's making the calls. And they will both be very involved in the plan.

Ray (Indy) [via mobile]

With RB values so low, does it make sense for the Colts to take one in the 1st Rd. if its one of the Top 3 RBs off the board?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

I would, as a policy, just not take a first-round running back unless he's clearly Adrian Peterson. And there is no Peterson in this draft.

dave (Indy)

Do you think putting Luck in a completely new offense will kind of stunt his growth from last season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

I think there is no stunting his growth. And he's worked with Pep Hamilton before, it's not like he's starting from scratch with someone.

Shoney (Houston TX)

PK, should the Texans draft a QB this year since they have an extra pick and knowing that Schaub can't get this team to the superbowl?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

If they see a really great prospect they really like, sure. But not to force it to satisfy Schaub critics, no.

Paul (Bloomington)

As interesting of two-team race as it may be for the AFC South, who do you give a slight advantage to?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

Sorry, I think it's crazy to be asked to make predictions before the draft. I don't know who will be on the teams yet.

Carmichael (the Fort) [via mobile]

I believe I've read from you before that you like Iaria's in Indy. Where does it rank in terms of local restaurants that not everyone may have heard of? Unlike St. Elmo's which everyone's heard of...

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

Iaria's in Indy and El Tiempo in Houston are my two favorite road restaurants in the AFC South. Add breakfast and we'll add Pattachou.

Peter (Indiana) [via mobile]

Is inside linebacker a need for the Colts at some point in this draft ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

I don't think so. Three deep with Jerrell Freeman, Pat Angerer and Kavell Conner. Doesn't mean they don't draft one.

P. Manning (Rocky Mt High)

Peter, don't you think I would have been better suited to play Johnny Unitis than that Flacco guy? Sure, Joe can pull off the crew-cut, but I really rocked the black high tops back when I was a Colt. btw...I feel we are really not communicating well lately...

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

I like what you did with the Peter, there.

Jason (Austin)

It used to be that the AFC South placed a priority on players who could stop Peyton. Who is/are the players the rest of the AFC South has to prioritize containing in order to win the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

They are Andrew Luck and J.J. Watt.

Haywood Jeffries (Oil City)

I've heard rumblings there is one (or more) top ten teams that are looking at possibly taking DJ Fluker. Do you think the Titans are one (if the rumor holds any water) or do you think they are a lock for Cooper/Warmack at 10?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

No one is a lock for anything. But I don't see taking Fluker ahead of Warmack or Cooper.

Trevor ( Iowa ) [via mobile]

Who do u like to win the masters?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

Brandt Snedeker.

Paul (SF) [via mobile]

Do you see TY Hilton being a good fit in with the West Cost Offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

Let's not outright call it a West Coast offense before we see it. Hamilton is smart and won't completely scrap what Arians did most effectively. Hilton will, I think, do more catch and run than run and catch.

Trevor (Iowa) [via mobile]

Is it entiry out of the realm of possibility that the Titans run the ball over 60% of their plays this year? Especially if they draft one of those guards at 10.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Even the best run teams seek balance. You run that much more than you throw, you encourage defenses to play for it.

Jared (Pensacola, FL) [via mobile]

You have tickets on the 50 yard line to the Super Bowl and front row seats to see the Boss on the same night. What do you go see (forgeting that your job would require you to go the Super Bowl)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

Bruce would never schedule against the Super Bowl. My job doesn't require me to go to all Super Bowls. I would go to Springsteen.

Paul (Bloomington)

What are the differences in skills/abilities between Hilton and DHB, and who do you see higher on the depth chart?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Hilton should start out higher on the depth chart. DHB is much bigger and has been less reliable, Hilton is smaller and shiftier.

Doug (MD)

Does Hilton automatically classify as a slot receiver because of his size? Or do you think he can develop into a #2 on the outside?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

I'd play him outside in two-wide, inside in three wide.

Anddrew Luck (IN)

Is there a Peter Kuharsky too?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

There is not. Not one I know.

Steve (Albany NY)

You have to be shocked with the Yankees record with that dismal linup correct?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

I thought people were burying them way early. It's baseball. You have to play some games and see. I thought they might win more than people expected early by pitching. I didn't foresee this power.

Chris (Tenn)

When CJ rushed for 2k yards he was also great in the passing game. It seemed like palmer got away from that, do you think loggains will use him on screens more?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Yes, but that presumes that CJ will be more interested in catching them than he has been in recent years.

Jon (Tennessee)

What do you see the biggest weakness is for the titans? Strength?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Quarterback production is the weakness, right now. Locker gets time to change that, of course.

Brett (Indianapolis)

Paul, have you ever attended the Draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

No and don't really care to.

Brian F. (jacksonville, fl)

The internet confirms there is no Peter Kuharsky. The best you get is Peter Kucharski. Therefore none exists. All hail the internet.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

All hail.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Is there really a chance Warmack or Cooper fall into the second round?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

None at all, I believe.

Trip (Jax)

Think Massaquoi can make an impact this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

Sure. A nice addition at a spot where they lack depth.

Eric(Indy) [via mobile]

How much more improved do you think the Colts OL is this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

Significantly with the two additions, and there could be a draft pick to come.

Trip (Jax)

Jags still have nothing at RT, time to get worried?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

If you have a hole and the draft is two weeks away, why would you get worried now? Worry about holes AFTER the draft.

James Goodman (Auburn)

PK, I read your blog every day. Tell me, do you think that the Texans could use an old OLB like James Harrison as a starter and mentor the OLBs behind him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

They aren't looking for a starter, I dont believe. And they like their defensive chemistry a lot. I'd be surprised if they think he wouldn't potentially mess with that.

Midge (Indy)

Loved the double take chat about changes to improve NFL experience.Any chance we get more of these type things in the future?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

Absolutely. And suggest away ideas for them.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Do the titans fire munch if they go 9-7 but no playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

Depends on how they play to get there, I think.

Doug (MD)

Would the Colts be thrilled if Cooper or Warmack fell or would they go elsewhere anyway?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

Would have to consider either. But I can't see either there at 24.

Jay Z (Tribeca)

Would you consider leaving your agent and joining my team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

Absolutely. See what's out there for me and let me know.

Sam (La Crosse, Wi)

True or False: This is one of the better chats we've had in a while.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

True. But I like them all equally. It's like having multiple children.

Cole (Tx)

Wrap it up... It's Lunch Time! Thanks Paul

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

What he said. Thanks folks.
