Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to a special Thursday chat. Was not able to do the usual Friday noon chat because I will be on my way to NYC to cover Donaire-Rigondeaux on Saturday night. That's a big-deal fight. So I'm here for you on Thursday to talk about that fight and all the other fights coming up. Plenty to discuss. So consult the schedule, check out the rankings, blogs and news stories from the week and let's get to it.

Coach T (Atl)

any fights being discussed for Alvarado yet ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Nothing specific yet other than his next fight won't be a third fight with Alvarado and Top Rank is interested in going to his hometown of Denver for his next fight. I think he could draw very well there for his next bout.

Garth (Norwalk, CT)

It was funny to see Guerrero talk about being a role model and then go and get himself arrested for trying to carry a gun through JFK.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

You're not the first to mention it. Can't disagree but I will say this -- as stupid as Guerrero was for doing what he did, it's not like he was acting the thug and trying to sneak a weapon a plane. I make no excuses for him and it was dumb but he disclosed it, had no ammo and was not trying to hide anything. Legally that makes no difference but I do think it's important to understand there was no threat involved.

Jan (Suprise, AZ)

Your prediction on Donaire-Rigondeaux this Saturday? Who wins, and how?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

My official prediction is Donaire by knockout. I have loved Donaire in this fight since it was first brought up. I think he will have to figure Rog out and adjust to the hand speed but eventually he is going to land that great left and good night. I dont think Rigondeaux has a good chin and I think Donaire scores a mid-rounds KO.

Chris (Tempe)

Dan, do you have any updates on Andy Lee?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Nothing specific. There was some talk about a possible summer fight between Lee and Macklin but Macklin is taking the Golovkin fight so as far as I know nothing specific is on tape for Andy at the moment.

Luis (Chicago)

Hey Dano, has the Love Child congradulated you on the upcoming birth of your child?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. No, not yet. lol.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Is HBO only showing the main event Saturday with no undercard televised?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Correct, a one-fight telecast starting at 11 pm ET/PT.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Did u catch the All Access last night Dan? I noticed Mayweather is producing it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I saw it. I noticed that too.

Quinn (Central PA)

With Spadafora's win last week, do you see him making a pay day in the next year? I can't see him actually being able to compete against the 140 pound shark pond but could make a good fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I saw the fight. He looked ok against a low-level opponent. He needs to step up the opposition at this point. He's 37 and has not fought a good opponent since the draw with Dorin forever ago. I can see him getting some sort of notable fight but to get it I believe he will have to take a risk and beat somebody solid first.

Brandon (San Diego )

Do you think there is any truth to Guerrero's belief that Floyd has slowed down and he's not as quick on his feet?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Absolutely. It was evident against Cotto. Floyd is still great BUT he has most definitely lost at least a LITTLE bit of his speed.

Eduardo (Pharr, TX)

Any thoughts on Omar "Panterita" Figueroa vs Abner Cotto on April 20th? If Figueroa wins, who would you like to see him face next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Solid fight between two young guys. Figueroa is excellent on offense but neglectful on defense. I think he might be able to get Cotto out of there. Neither one are ready for a top contender yet though.

Mike (Houston)

Dan, I read an article about Chris John early and he said he still had the fire to box longer than what was first reported. I think him VS Donaire would be a great fight? Do you think they would consider it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

John has showed no interest in returning to America to fight. I very much doubt that fight will happen. I would say the one way it MIGHT is maybe in a place like Macau, where having Indonesia vs. Philippines would probably draw. But John may still have some association with Golden Boy so if that is the case forget about it.

Chris (Jersey)

It seems like NY has become a boxing hotbed again lately. Lots of big fights that happened already - Hopkins, the triple header at MSG Theater, cotto-trout and many lined up - donaire, fury, garcia judah, broner, etc. I love being able to go to them all.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

NY is a good fight town, obviously. With opening of the Barclays Center there are now regular bigger shows to go with the less frequent bigger shows at MSG and the Theater as well as the regular club shows DiBella puts on.

Mario (Houston, TX)

Dan, Marquez is set to announce his next fight next week. He keeps saying that it will be Bradley not Pacquiao? Do you believe him and if its true who is a viable opponent for Pac?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I have said from day 1 that I believe when it's all said and done Marquez-Pacquiao 5 will be each of their next fights. When somebody explains the numbers to Marquez and he realizes he can make probably $10-15 million against Pacman and probably half that or less against Bradley the decision will be obvious.

Chris (NY)

Who is Donaires promoter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Top Rank.

Dan (San Diego)

Chances Manny's next fight is really in Asia?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Top Rank says 100 percent. We shall see.

Duane Ford [via mobile]

Gale Von Hoy is the best judge in boxing

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

mjay (can)

who do you see to win fight dawson vs stevenson????

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Not sure how much the loss to Ward took out of Chad. I know one thing, whether it toook out a lot or not, IF Stevenson lands the big right hand forget about it. Dawson goes to sleep. But if Dawson is on his game and can box, he can probably make Stevenson look like an amateur. To me it's all about if Stevenson can land the right hand. If so, he wins violently. If not, Dawson probably outboxes him.

Mike (Phoenix)

I heard youre a big collector. Which items should I invest in? I especially like boxing art.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I dont collect artwork. I collect posters, cards and programs. I tweeted this the other night of one of my personal favorites in my collection, a rookie card of Jack Johnson in a high-grade condition that is virtually impossible to find for a card more than 100 years old: http://twitpic.com/ci9jpa

Too Dope (TEXAS)

How do the hookers in Jersey compare to the ones in Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

These are my readers.

Luke (Harrisburg)

Do you think that the gun charges habe been clouding The Ghost's head and interfering with his fight prep?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Hard to say but I dont think it's possible for the prospect of four years in prison to not be on somebody's mind.

Mike (Pittsburgh)

DTM, can you please settle a work argument? I think that Ben Tackie should at least be on the nomination sheet for the HOF based on his record and the people he fought. I'm not saying he should be in it, but I do think the voters should have a right to select him if they so choose.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I do not think Tackie should even be on the ballot. I hope that question was a joke.

Chris (Ny)

What were your overall thoughts on All Access?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

I liked it. It was very 24/7ish.

Ian (Montreal)

Dan, will you be in Montreal for Bute/Pascal on May 25th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Not sure yet.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Here's my story on BHop's decision to fight his mandatory: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9157371/bernard-hopkins-agrees-light-heavyweight-title-defense-karo-murat

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

And here is my newest blog with some notes. Enjoy. http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3699/gamboa-andrade-in-the-news

Andy (Dublin Ireland)

Hey Dan what do you make David Haye's comeback, do you think he can win another world title, ie beat a Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

No, I dont think he beats a Klitschko. Never have thought that. No evidence to suggest that if he got another shot that he would do anything other than run and flop like he did against Wladimir. He talked a big game and then, well, blamed his #toe. That is just the fact.

bbqjohn (Texas)

Canelo or Trout?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Yes.

Justin (Seattle by way of Jersey)

Good p[lace to find fight posters?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

SPBoxing.com.

Matt (Pittsburgh)

Everybody keeps on reporting that Marquez wants to pick Bradley. If that is the case why would Bradley accept the fight? Why wouldn't he just turn around and make a fight with Manny for much more money?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Exactly. Marquez can say all he wants that he prefers Bradley. But it takes two to tango. So I agree with you. If Marquez doesnt take Pacquiao again, Pacquiao needs an opponent and Bradley is the obvious guy. Bradley will make WAY more against Manny in a rematch than he would with Marquez. Here's the thing: Marquez-Bradley is probably too expensive of a fight for HBO to buy for the network. So that means it would have to be a PPV. But I dont think it does THAT much business for either guy to get huge guarantees. I think it's a real risk for Top Rank. Does that fight do 300,000 buys? I am not so sure it does. It's a very hard fight to make economically if everyone is honest in their expectations of the money. Pacquiao is still the bigger A-side. So Marquez and Bradley need him to make the biggest fight and fighting each other means the money would pale compared to a Pacquiao fight for either.

Buzz (Brookline)

Hi Dan have you seen a guy catch more flak for his professional debut than Zhou Shiming. I thought he showed great poise to headline an event like that and decent skill against a bigger and better than the usual 1st opponent (ie someone who isn't paid just to fall over). Why all the hate?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Honestly, I have not seen the hate you speak of. Anyone with a clue should understand he was the main event because of where the fight was not because of the match.

JJ (New Orleans)

Dan, why do you make it sound like Marquez can choose Bradley? Bradley will never fight Marquez if he can get Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

What are you talking about? I never said Marquez could pick Bradley. I mean I guess he can but that doesnt mean Bradley has to fight him.

Ruben (Houston, TX.)

Dan, do you think Trout has enough pop in his punch to keep Canelo at bay? I don't recall seeing Cotto hurt by Trout, and with all due respect, who hasn't hurt Cotto. I'm going with Alvarez on this one. Trout will be fighting the crowd (noise swayed judges) too.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

The topic of Trout's power came up on his conference call with the press yesterday and I agree with him that his power is underrated. He's not a big knockout guy but he can hurt you.

Matt (Virginia)

I see Mosley is fighting again. Does he have financial issues or something?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

He got hit hard in his divorce but as far as I know he is still OK financially. But he just still wants to fight and he is making very little for this fight anyway.

steve (oklahoma)

how good of a chance would we have of getting a martinez/golovkin fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I dont see it happening, certainly not this year.

Percy D. (NYC)

Dan, I'm going to the Donaire fight on Saturday. Any undercard fights that I better make sure not to miss?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

It's not a big undercard but Seanie Monaghan, really a club guy, is on the show and always is in a slugfest. Felix Verdejo, the PR Olympian that Top Rank signed, is on. No one big matchup but some good prospects and popular ticket sellers.

Mario (Houston, TX)

Arum mentioned Alvarado as a possible Pac opponent. I might be in minority but I'm kinda done with Pac-Marquez, Id like to see them move on and fight new contenders. Not saying I wouldnt watch if Pac-Marquez 5 goes down, just would prefer different fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I think Alvarado could be a Pacman opponent but probably not for the September fight.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Dan - Could the sanctioning bodies start barring Don King from their purse bids? Do they have to continue to accept his bids if he continually defaults on them?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

They could.

Adam H (Seattle)

Is it just me or is this hype of the Mayweather fight not the same regardless of the press conference not happening. I think the move to showtime might come back on bight Money

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

The hype has been considerably less in IMO. I dont think it's only the network though. Showtime has a lot of stuff coming up. A lot of it has been Mayweather's unwillingness to do any media for the fight other than his CBS appearance at the NCAAs. He has turned down numerous interview requests from boxing media for weeks. And now Guerrero is not doing anything either because he doesnt want to talk about the arrest. Mayweather also has his money guaranteed by Showtime so where is the motivation to sell the PPV beyond doing the minimum he is contractually obligated to do?

Greg (Canada)

I wouldn't take anything Marquez is saying seriously, I think he's just enjoying being in a position to dominate and control the negotiations for one of the first times in his career. Must be fun.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Agreed. Right now it's all hype and him saying what he wants to say. But the dollars will speak at the end of the day.

Matt (Virginia)

Last I heard was GGG/Macklin (assuming it gets made) would be on the east coast. Have you heard any updates on that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

It will be. No set site yet but I would expect it to be at Foxwoods.

John (Fredericksburg, Va)

Dan, Can you tell me a little on Murat and what chances you give him against Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I have him ranked 8th in the ESPN 175 rankings. His only loss was by TKO10 to Cleverly in an eliminator. His draw is with Campillo. He's very solid. He's a traditional European standup boxer. Not big power but decent. He basically is solid all around but does nothing great. I think he's made to order for BHop. A younger BHop beats him 10-2 with ease. The 48 year old? Maybe a tougher night but I still think BHop outpoints him.

Alfredo (Canada)

Have rigo power to ko nonito?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

They both have good KO power.

Jordan (NM)

BiG dog!!Heard roach say that Juan is asking for close to 50 percent of the cut for a fifth fight. I agree that a bigger purse than previous is acceptable but do u think he deserves 50?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

He can ask for anything he wants. I might ask ESPN for a 50 percent raise next time around. Doesn't mean you get it.

Albert (Spring Lake, NJ)

Dan-- your take on Ring Magazine recognizing Canelo-Trout as 154 lb. world champ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Couldnt care less because the Ring title means nothing anymore.

Ryan (Ohio)

I heard recently in an interview that Andre Ward would prefer to fight Chavez Jr, you think Bob Arum would let this fight happen ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Better chance of Pacquiao-Mayweather happening than of Bob allowing that assault.

Matt (Seattle, WA)

Hi Dan, What do you think the chances are that Floyd follows through on all the fights he's obligated to have under his entire CBS contract? He's either going to be very old (if he keeps fighting at his current pace) or be fighting very frequently.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

First off I dont think Floyd is "obligated" to fight. If he does fight, however, CBS/Showtime have the rights and he has guarantees. I am also told he has out language at various times too if he is unhappy. In other words, he doesnt have to fight if he doesnt want to.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Why would Fox and Golden Boy pick Monday nights for their series? There are other nights during the week when the NFL isn't on during the fall.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Why not? I would imagine that is what worked for FS1 and since they are the buyer you do what the buyer wants. And not everyone watches NFL anyway. Plus, NFL is only 17 weeks of the year.

Sal Rangel (El Paso, TX)

On what Adam asked. Showtime just doesn't have the spark that HBO does. When you think of the biggest fights, you think HBO not Showtime.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Maybe that is the case now but Showtime, by the way it is buying fights and the deal it made with Floyd, is obviously trying very hard to change that. So credit to them for that.

Jesse (El Mirage AZ)

Thoughts on Curtis Jackson's promoting career so far?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Nothing special whatsoever.

Ryan (Ohio)

What would you rate the Mayweather under card,? For some reason I'm not as excited for this fight as I usually am

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Ponce-Mares is a top-notch fight. I like that one a lot. My rule of thumb for a big PPV is at least one of the non-main event bouts should be HBO or Showtime worthy. Ponce-Mares absolutely is. So that is good. Santa Cruz-Munoz is a little disappointing in terms of the opponent for Santa Cruz but still a reasonable fight and I love watching Santa Cruz so I am cool with that fight. Love-Rosado is a very solid fight to me and I am surprised Love and his team took the fight. I could see Rosado winning that for sure. That's an interesting match. Overall, I would rate the undercard a B+.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Bat text message: Golovkin-Macklin is done for June 29 at Foxwoods.

Mike (UH Rec )

Mikey Garcia VS Who? In June or in July?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Date is not set. Looks more and more like it could be Orlando Cruz.

Ryan (Ohio)

I've been an avid boxing fan since 2008. would you agree that the sport has become more popular since then, slowly getting back on cable an the idea that HBO has became more global. All good for the sport

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

It has become more popular it seems to me.

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

Nice. There will be blood June 29.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

LOL. Exactly.

raymond (toronto)

Why can know one answer why the Mathysee-Peterson fight is not for a unification title and insted a catchweight fight?GBP won't mention why-do u know?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

It is at 141. Matthysse didnt want to give up his wretched WBC interim title. IBF, obviously, is not going to allow its title to be unified with an interim title. That makes sense. Peterson, OBVIOUSLY, wasnt going to give up his IBF title to fight for a crappy interim belt. Schaefer didnt' give a damn, just wanted to get the fight on, so they did it at 141 with neither title. It's stupid and makes no sense and I blame Matthysse since the whole damn purpose of an interim is to get a shot at an actual title, which he would be getting with Peterson. He wanted to still be Garcia's mandatory, which is also stupid since Schaefer promotes three of the four guys and wants to match the Peterson-Matthysse winner with the Garcia-Judah winner. (Schaefer doesnt promote Judah but could easily make a deal.) So it makes no sense for Matthysse to be worried about an interim belt. Furthermore, if he were to lose to Peterson or win and still be Garcia's mandatory and the fight went to a purse bid his percentage is less than what he would get as an equal titleholder in a negotiated deal. Whole thing is just stupid but still a good fight.

Garth (Norwalk, CT )

Any particular reason you stopped doing your monthly P4P rankings? The new ESPN P4P rankings just don't cut it for me.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Was not my call. I'd prefer to be doing them each month as I have done since I was at USA Today.

javier gorbea (Puerto Rico)

dAN a quick comnent on the return of baby bull

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Good luck to him. Maybe the break did him some good. He is not in too tough Saturday but we should see a little something of what he has left. He's still in his 20s so he is not an old man. Here's the story I wrote on his comeback a few weeks ago: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9045250/juan-diaz-ends-retirement-face-pipino-cuevas-jr

Chris C (Washington DC)

Hey Dan, I agree that the ring title doesn't mean anything anymore but what is wrong with canelo-trout being for the title? Don't most people have them as 1-2 at 154 considering floyd is defending his welterweight belt?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

I didnt say anything was wrong with it being for the Ring title. I said I just dont give a damn.

javiguani (Puerto Rico)

dan I read salido may face Roman martinez in september does that have fight of the year wrote all over it

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I wrote that yesterday. It could be a helluva fight. Read this: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3693/golovkin-macklin-close-plus-more

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

It appears that the Diaz-Cuevas fight will not air Live on Fox Deportes, it will air on Sunday afternoon.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Live on FSN, tape delayed on Fox Deportes. But not evey FSN affiliate shows it. Where I live in Northern Virginia, we never get the shows on English FSN affiliate.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Here's my story on the Dawson-Stevenson fight. Some great quotes from the fighters: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9157835/chad-dawson-set-title-defense-adonis-stevenson

Jamie (NH)

I know the Viloria-Estrada fight was just last weekend, but who's next for Estrada? A rematch with Viloria, or perhaps a rematch with Roman Gonzalez?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

Estrada is supposed to fight in Mexico in June but nothing specific on the opponent yet.

Jamie (NH)

What is the likelihood that Oosthusizen will be on the GGG-Macklin undercard? Regardless, do you think B Gonzalez is his next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

He is on the undercard and his fight will be on HBO.

Val (Cali)

Dan, saw some clips of the stare down between Donaire and Rigo. That was one of the longest and most intense ones I've seen. What other memorable stare downs pop in your head that match it for intensity?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

I tweeted that yesterday that it was a very intense staredown, one of nest I can remember. Nothing really comes to mind though as far as others.

Matt (Pittsburgh)

IMO, Until Showtime upgrades their Play by play guy, and drastically upgrades their lighting and sound they will always be inferior to HBO.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

That is a common complaint I hear from the Fight Freaks.

javier gorbea (Puerto Rico)

dan you wrote a couple of days ago about ishe smith vs carlos molina hapening please tell me they are not going to pair up with the hopkins fight because it is we can call it sleepless in Newyork

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Nothing is determined on that yet but I doubt they will be on the same card. Here's the story I wrote on it: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3666/holt-cleared-of-taking-hcg

Fred (PA)

Who do you think is Cottos likely opponent for his fall comeback?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Not sure but I am told there is also a chance Cotto could be back in July.

Jamie (NH)

Showtime also needs the truck.

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Fletch (Tybee Island, GA)

The Streak lives on! Enjoyed your live-tweeting for Wrestlemania, Mayweather vs Undertaker at the next WM?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Thanks. 21-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mac ((Sin City))

Dan, any idea how big a check Donaire and Rigondeaux will be cashing after their Saturday bout?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Rigondeaux purse is $750,000 as per the New York commission. Donaire contract is not officially filed with the commission yet but it's supposed to be $1,320,000. I'll find out for sure once it's filed with the commission.

Rick (STL)

Prediction on "The Irish Outlaw's" fight on Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

The fight is not on Showtime, rather on the untelevised undercard.

Bishop (Kansas City, Mo)

Pelullo said, "50 was unable to deliver the number he was supposed to pay me." Any idea on what that number was?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

I dont know for certain but I believe the offer was around $300k total package then reduced to $200K and that wasnt going to fly.

Eric (Tampa)

Dan, did you alter your Jack Johnson card like the Honus Wagner which was just sold?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

LOL, no. I love that Johnson card and had been looking for one in that kind of grade for a long time and finally found one. It was not cheap but I am proud to own it.

Nick (Clothier, WV)

DANaire, still nothing on IF or when Vitali will fight again? Also anything on Kovalevs next bout? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Nothing specific on either sorry to say.

State Trooper (Las Vegas )

I've got a 510, speeding semi-truck going west bound with a huge HBO signs, clocked at 85 in a 55

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

LOL!!!!!! PAY THE MAN, SHIRLEY!!

Guano man (Puerto Rico)

dan is it me or its the abregu vs decarie fight not recieving as much attention as it should that is a terrific and may probably be the best fight on the 27

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

I like the matchup but I understand why it hasnt got much pub. It's a very busy fight day and not a big fight for US fight fans.

Jose (Lennox, CA)

D$ congrats on the babay freak on the way. Any word as to when tickets for the June 8th Maidana-Lopez card go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Thanks. No announcement yet on specifically when those tix go on sale but when they set the prices and on-sale date I will tweet it.

Mike Rodriguez (Los Angele)

Do you think Vicente Escobedo can make a comeback & become a champ at 130?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Unlikely.

Mick C (New York)

Hey fat man, you ever stepping into a ring?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Yeah, maybe to take great pleasure in crushing you.

Mike (Macomb, MI)

Dan, Nonito didn't answer my question in his chat. Do you think he'll ever face his stablemate Mikey Garcia?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

I really doubt that. They are friends, they have the same trainer and they have the same manager and the money for the fight is not overwhelming enough for them to go there.

steve (oklahoma)

hate to bring up the past, but who did you have winning the De La Hoya/ Trinidad fight? Just to settle a point with a friend. I believe you are the top p4p boxing writer in the game right now, so your answer would be crucial to settle this argument

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

Check out my FAQ for that answer and many others: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8834349/dan-rafael-frequently-asked-chat-questions-part-2

Dieter (From Sprockets)

I know it is Thursday, and that we are not on the regular chat schedule, but I can bite my tongue no more! Thus, NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

The D-man has spoken.

joey (reno)

do you play boxing video games?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

I have but have not in years. I do own the first couple editions of Knockout Kings, which was an awesome game but have not played in years.

korrey (NYC)

Wait, so Demetrius Andrade can get a shot at a title? Are title belts on sale at Target. Please this guy's resume is softer than the tissue he uses to wipe himself.

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Agreed.

evan (venice, ca)

those john ruiz dvds you have will do wonders if you're ever looking to soothe your newborn to sleep.

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

LOL.

javier gorbea (Puerto Rico)

have the finally settle who will fight willie nelson?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Not yet but I wrote a blog on the situation that should be published shortly.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Dan, just as an addendum, Mike C from New York is NOT allowed to dance. He is probably a bad dancer anyway. ...

Omar (Philly)

Nice comeback on Mick C, Dan. I had an image in my head of your saying that in Ivan Drago's voice lol.

Carlo Follo (Merrimack NH)

Any word on if Golden Boy is going to have a Web Site like TOP RANKS that allows us to see all the undercards. I think its just fantasatic.

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

I've asked them about that but so far they have not made that committment. Hopefully, in the future because I agree with you -- the TR website is awesome for undercard action.

Sean (CT)

Has location been announced yet for GGG vs. Macklin? Hoping it is in NYC

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

Foxwoods.

Jamie (NH)

I think Mick C should walk in front of the HBO truck.

Pedro (Albany, NY)

Which current boxer do you think has the harriest chest?

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

These are my readers.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Although I can see your scenario of a Donaire KO, I can just as easily see Rigo boxing Donaires ears off for twelve rounds, bloodying his face and getting a decision win.

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

I dont think anyone on planet earth boxes Donaire's ears off.

guano man (Puerto Rico)

dan have a final decision been made on kessler forch been taped delayed?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

As far as I know, it is on HBO on tape delay at this point. I hope they change their mind because that is just horrible.

Chris (Ny)

Is Jim Lampley going to be commentating for Martinez-Macklin?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Yes, Lampley, Max and Roy will call the fights in Argentina. Papa and Andre Ward will call the Arreola-Stiverne fight on the other part of the split-shite show in California. Lederman will be unofficial scorer in Argentina. Steve Weisfeld will handle the California show.

AJ (DC)

Hi Dan, I was getting ready to do some yard work since the grass is starting to come out and all, but decided to come here and procrastinate instead. So far so good. The grass will still be there when chat is over.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Great call.

scott (KY)

why i won't watch golf: it's against the rules for competitors to punch each other in the face.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

LOL. Punching should be allowed, at least in Masters week.

Nad Leafar (NS)

Have you every wrote a boxing article in reverse lettering? That would be fun...

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

on i tnevah.

Jeff (Denver)

is Arthur Abraham done as a legit title contender? he seems to be on the cusp of gatekeeper status.

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Other than a tight win against Stieglitz in their first fight he has been a complete bust at 168.

Joe (NJ)

What type of opponent do you think Kathy Duva will allow Adamek to fight next time out? Considering how he has looked last since the Vitali beat down.

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Adamek is not working with Main Events anymore. He is a free agent.

Randy (NYC)

Chat beverage of choice today?

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

A little grape gatorade.

Laser (Long Island)

Do you think Larry Merchant would call a Showtime fight? Do you think any of the HBO announcers would crossover to Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

At this point Larry still has paper with HBO that does not allow him on Showtime.

Danny (Chicago)

DTM , your blog on gamboa isnt up yet and I cant link it from my phone. You mind sharing gamboa news?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

It's right here. http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3699/gamboa-andrade-in-the-news Just updates how the Burgos fight fell apart.

Peter (Davis, CA)

The Donaire-Rigo staredown was legendary!! I love how the guy who tried to make them look at the camera understood the queue to leave them alone.

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

It was awesome.

Matt (Pittsburgh)

Dan, is it Harold Lederman's or HBO's decision for him to stop work BAD cards?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

HBO's call. Harold would work four-round off TV cards if he could.

Berndawg (CHI)

http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3699/gamboa-andrade-in-the-newsVery interesting stuff in the new blog from the GOT!!!

Chris (Tempe) [via mobile]

Any truth to the rumor that you will be naming your child Butterbean?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

This is not true. lol.

vito (jersey shore)

dan, do you like big butts and can you lie?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny.

Joe M (Dallas)

Read the blog, kinda wish Chisora would just go away. Not a fan of him personally or as a fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

I hear ya. He makes fun fights though and has a big personality. That said, you gotta win sometimes.

Garth (Norwalk, CT )

He's no Liev Schreiber but I felt Common did a good job narrating All Access.

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Common is not my cup of tea and will take some getting used to. Honestly, that was the one part I personally did not like.

Tom (Yonkers)

Any word or rumor on who could potentially be on the B-Hop undercard for his mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

Way too soon for that. They just got the OK from BHop to finalize the fight and do not have a set date or venue or TV deal yet. Patience.

Justin (Seattle by way of Jersey)

My girlfriend is Filipina and said that Pac Man announced retirement last week in the Philipines. Obviously not true but did you hear any rumors

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

A bad internet rumor with no basis of fact.

Fabien (London)

Dan I like common but liev had that beautiful story telling voice who do you prefer?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

I'd listen to Liev read the phone book or even a story about soccer.

Chris (NYC)

I build the Friday chat into my week's schedule. This Thursday chat, plus Campbell yesterday is KILLING my productivity!

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

LOL, well there wont be a chat tomorrow so you can get some work done brother.

daniel (zongambia)

dan you think dat the 1 lb over on matthysse peterson, is a move of golden to not give vacant tittles to top rank fighter???

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

Not at all, it was strictly thanks to the ridiculous Matthysse camp.

Luke (Harrisburg)

Your thoughts on Zou Shiming's debut? Secondly, your thoughts about pro boxing cracking the Chinese market?

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Shiming looked very average and very amateur. His punches are massively wide with zero snap or leverage because they are slaps. His jab is a pushing jab, again with little zip. He looks quick but his style is totally amateur and needs to be remolded into a pro style. At 31 not sure that happens. He will need to be VERY carefully matched.

Jordan (NMd)

Do you usually laugh out loud when you are responding with " these are my readers"?.. That hairy chest question cracked me up

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Yes I do.

GUS (BAY AREA)

Dan is it a crime to giggle like a school girl whenever David Haye calls out the Klitchskos???

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

No because it is somewhat hilarious.

Brandon (Chula Vista)

DTM, Today's chat is throwing off my work week. What do you say to a quickie tomorrow? lol

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Not happening. The reason for the change is because I will be in transit at noon to NYC to cover Donaire-Rigondeaux and didnt want to just not have a chat at all this week. So I moved it to Thursday.

David (Cape Canaveral)

D$, what the hell is up with Khans #2 slot at '47? Is it a blatent attempt to boost him as Floyds next foe? #wbcisbogus

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

#wbcisdisgusting plain and simple. It's so laughable it's pathetic.

scott (KY)

ask liev schrieber to narate your birthing video! "sliding through the birth canal is a ritual as old as the stars themselves...nine months of gestation becomes just backstory to what will soon be the event of a lifetime for all those involved... it's both a birth and a rebirth..."

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

Absolutely epic. Thank you.

Darian (Chandler)

Is Joe Goossen still training? Seems like I haven't seen him working a corner in quite awhile. I miss the shirts!

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

Yes he still trains some guys. The shirts are epic. I do a great Joe Goossen impression by the way.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

I loved hearing Tim Ryan's voice last Saturday and I was happy that he mentioned his old partner Gil Clancy.

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Was a pleasure to hear him. When I was growing up watching boxing on TV to me the voices were Barry Tompkins and Larry Merchant on HBO and Tim and Gil on CBS.

Berndawg (CHI)

Iron Sheik Chat tomorrow at Noon? I would go for that...

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Respect the legend 000000000 bubba.

Peter (NYC)

Thoughts on Edwin Rodriguez's last fight? Didn't have his best night

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Being honest, he looked like crapola.

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

Your assessment of Zou is what may have been termed "hate" in an earlier question. I couldn't agree more with your assessment btw.

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

What I said was not hate, it was an honest view of his boxing ability that he displayed in his pro debut. An educated opinion is not hate.

Joe (NJ)

Dan, how can Boytsov be rated in the Rings Heavyweight Top 10 for over 200 weeks, yet still manage not to fight a legit contender, or lose his spot in the ranking?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

I have no idea but Boytsov being ranked in any heavyweight top 10 is not legitimate at all.

Anthony (Sacramento )

Dan a week or so in another chat you mentioned you were offered the job as editor of Ring Magazine. Was that after or before Golden Boy took it over?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

Yes.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, I agree with your thoughts on Zou Shiming looking very average and amateur, craziest thing to me though is that he won 2 olympic gold medals?! Just shows that amateur and pro boxing are 2 COMPLETELY different sports

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Hows Canelo's english coming along? Will be really difficult for him to become a crossover star if he doesnt improve it IMO

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

Canelo's English is getting a bit better as far as I can tell. Seems he understands more in English but is still a bit reluctant to speak in English. He did say a few English words on the conference call yesterday.

Muhammad (Dothan Al)

Dan 2hrs Chat session... A little Hard Work Dedication huh?

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

HARD WORK, DEDICATION! HARD WORK, DEDICATION!HARD WORK, DEDICATION! HARD WORK, DEDICATION!HARD WORK, DEDICATION! HARD WORK, DEDICATION!HARD WORK, DEDICATION! HARD WORK, DEDICATION!HARD WORK, DEDICATION! HARD WORK, DEDICATION!HARD WORK, DEDICATION! HARD WORK, DEDICATION!

Lee (Salisbury, MD)

Thanks to Scott in KY, I cant get the visual image of your childs birth out of my head.

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

I believe the term "hating" has evolved from individuals lacking the education to intelligently defend their position.

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

I agree.

Wilson (DC)

Dan, am I crazy for thinking that Soto-Karass has a pretty solid chance to upset Andre Berto? I can see Soto-Karass coming on late and wrecking him down the stretch.

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

Soto Karass is no worl beater but he is a tough as nails opponent for anyone. Win or lose you are going to know you were in a fight. There is always a place for a guy like that in boxing.

Angel (Carson City)

Do you think Cunningham will be able to outbox Fury?

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

Not sure how that plays out. Cunningham is a better skilled boxer for sure but Steve also likes to rumble too.

robin (sweden)

what time is it? CHAT TIME! I SAID WHAT TIME IS IT? CHAT TIME!

Reid (Cleveland)

Better fight atmosphere on May25 - England or Canada?

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

Both will be great but I would imagine it will be crazier in London. Having been to major fights in both Montreal and England, no doubt the Brits are far loud and crazier than the Canadians.

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

By the way, the wretched WBC announced moments ago that it has stripped Andre Ward and made him "champion emeritus." What that means is that you can count on the Bika-Periban fight on June 8 on Showtime being for the wretched vacant title. #wbcisdisgusting

julio (dfw)

would you agree that Chris John will be remembered as the Calzaghe of asia. Fought almost all but 2 fights in the comfort of his backyard, and never fought any real dangerous opponent.

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

At least Calzaghe fought big name guys BHop and Roy even if Roy was past his prime. I dont agree with you.

Ryan (UK)

Does kessler also hold some portion of the WBC belt? Being billed as a unification match over here..

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

Froch has IBF, Kessler has WBA "regular" nonsense.

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

Froch has IBF, Kessler has WBA "regular" nonsense.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

So if Ward is stripped by WBC, does the WBA strip him of his "super" title because he isn't unified anymore?

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

Good question. Probably.

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

Thanks for the Thursday chat Fight Freaks. Glad you showed up today. I'm off to NY for Donaire-Rigondeaux tomorrow. Should be a good fight. Make sure to check out all of our coverage and the various blogs and news stories and have a great Friday and weekend. Talk to you next week. Peace.
