Kicking off early because I'm going to have to cut out about 1:45 to 1:50. Fire away with the questions.
How do you personally feel about the repeating statement heard recently for our beloved Bucs "They are not that one piece away from a Super Bowl! i.e. Revis trade" Any team can be built for a title run, but one tipped pass, sack, blown coverage, etc?. can be the difference between a title and a wasted season [example: Denver] Our team was 6-4 at one point, missing starting DE's, missing starting Guards and almost all losses came to within one possession. Even getting to the playoffs is satisfactory in my mind at this current time and I think a shutdown corner is exactly the missing piece!!!
They obviously have a huge need at CB. I say go ahead and do it, but try to keep the compensation price down as much as possible.
Hey Pat,Any chance that Revis is dealt before monday to avoid any further distraction with the NY media? He could see the Giant's doctor on monday morning and then fly to Tampa for our physical!!!
Perhaps, but I'm not sure Jets care about avoiding distractions. They seem to thrive on that kind of stuff.
Do you see the Panthers struggling for a few seasons as we get out from under some of the cap problems we've accumulated recently?
I think they have enough talent to turn things around, if a few things break differently than last year. Cupboard is not bare.
Hi Pat... Even though the Bucs resigned Dan O, do you believe they will sign a free agent QB or draft one? Thanks!
Think there will be another QB added in some way. My guess is a mid-round draft pick.
Pat basically every mock draft I?ve seen lately has Carolina taking Sheldon Richardson at 14. Do you think he is the most likely player to be picked by the Panthers at that spot?
Yeah, I do think Richardson is the logical choice. But I'll throw out one alternative option that's kind of growing on me -- Kenny Vaccaro.
I don't understand why Atlanta isn't going after revis. I get that he costs a lot of money and demands a huge contract. But our two biggest problems las year were qb pressure and coverage. He would help both out instantly. We won't be getting any probowlers with the late first round pick or second round pick, let's trade them away for revis. Ask Matt Ryan to take a smaller contract for the better of the team. Agree or disagree?
There's no way they can pay Revis and Ryan both long term. Idea of a guy taking one for the team is nice and Matt's as nice a guy as there is, but he's not going to play for peanuts. Also, try selling his agent on that idea.
Do you think Thomas Dimitroff should trade up to get a top DE or CB in this draft?
Maybe a few spots up for a CB.
why not hold off on revis and trade up for milliner this year, then attempt a trade for revis later in the season for next years pics after we have seen revis in action still knowing the jets dont want to resign him, that is if we would even need revis at that point?
That's something I think Bucs should at least consider. No guarantee Milliner is going to be anywhere near as good as a healthy Revis. But Revis may not be the same guy he was before. Cost of getting Milliner also would be less -- both in draft picks and salary.
With the loss of Grimes & Robinson, and the pressure on Umenyiora to perform as well (or better than) Abraham, do you feel that Atlanta's defense, as of right now, is the same, if not worse, than last year's?
I'd agree with that. But they obviously are going to get a CB soon.
with some of the big linebackers that were available in FA why not cut vilma and smith and go after one. Smith is not great and vilma is in decline
If they were going to cut them, they would have done that back in March instead of restructuring both their contracts. However, I will say I think they would have been better off cutting them then. Could have made a fresh start on rebuilding the defense.
So don't pay revis long term then. Do a two yr deal with a big signing bonus. He has shown that he wants to be paid at the top of the league, with a short contract he can play and try to get another big guarantee in two yrs. skip all the holdout garbage.
You think Revis would go along with that?
Hey Pat. Loved the blog post attributed to my revis to falcons question in last weeks chat. As a follow up, do you see the falcons signing a veteran DB after the draft, such as Charles Woodson?
Very possible. Could see them drafting a CB early as well as adding veteran insurance after the draft.
I just saw a post about Frank Alexander being a break out player this year for the Panthers. Any possible way that they ask Alexander to move inside to the DT position or may be run a hybrid 3-4 and draft Vaccaro?
No, just think you'll see them get Alexander on the field more often. They can swing Hardy inside in some sets with Alexander and Johnson on the outside.
Last year the Falcons were burned by the TE in the playoffs, does it not make sense to improve the Linebacker position in the draft to take care of that problem? With that resolved and the running back positon upgraded I like their chances this year.
I think you could see them trying to find an upgrade over Stephen Nicholas.
Hey Pat, do you think there is any chance the Bucs make a trade with the Vikings giving the 13th pick to Minnesota in return for the 23rd and 25th? Minnesota needs to fill that hole that Percy Harvin left and 13 seems to be where everyone is putting Tavon Austin.
Let's see what happens on Revis situation first. That's the key to anything to do with Tampa Bay right now.
Would you be shocked if the Falcons traded up to get Millner, if somehow he slipped to the 6-10 range? They are in a win now mode!
Wouldn't be totally shocked. They did something similar a couple years ago with Julio.
Any chance the Honey Badger falls far enough for the Falcons to grab him in the 2nd or 3rd round? And would TD and Smith take a chance on him and his past?
Think they might have opportunity to grab him, but suspect Smith and Dimitroff would probably pass.
Any chance the Panthers can get a few more contracts (Williams, Beason) restructured in order to get further under the cap to make more moves?
Possible. And it could be others besides Williams and Beason.
Hey pat, I saw your reply to a question reffering to Tampa picking up a QB, saying it would be a mid rounder, but do you think that they might try to go for a one of the higher QBs in this years draft with their Second round pick? (Obviously using the 13th to either get Revis, or draft a high end CB)
Wouldn't totally rule it out. Could possibly see them taking someone like Ryan Nassib if he's there in the second round.
I only suggest that because it solves the compensation issue. We would have 2 1st rounders and would obviously be more willing to part with one.
At least worth considering.
Hi Pat. Have you heard any rumblings linking the Falcons to Antoine Winfield? Best CB left on the market, and frees up the draft to get some pash rushing help.
Surprisingly, I've heard nothing that indicates they're interested in him.
Pat, how do you not include cornerback in the Panthers need this morning? And why does everyone have Richardson to the Panthers? One of Patterson (WR), Rhodes (CB), Lotulelei or Sylvester Williams (DT) will be available and are far better prospects.
Those were ESPN Stats & Info's needs, not mine. On Richardson, I think the common assumption is they'll go for a DT since they've had trouble at the position for so long.
Any word on Ronde in Tampa
All quiet. Just waiting for Ronde to make his decision.
Do you feels like the stories about Freeman are true. And why
Can you be a little more specific on what stories you're talking about?
Do you see the Saints still willing to trade Pierre Thomas or Chris Ivory or will they be returning next year?
Think it's possible they could look for a trade. They could use the draft picks.
Will deangelo get dealt on draft day?
Never say never, but I haven't heard any rumblings of interest. At least not yet.
I've seen several mock drafts that have the Bucs taking Tavon Austin. With such need in both the secondary and Dline, is this really a strong possibility?
I doubt it. They're already pretty well set at WR. Plus, they have big money tied up in Vincent Jackson and probably will be giving Mike Williams a new deal before too long.
Hey Pat any chance the Saints move up and grab Jordan
Not sure Saints are in a position to be trading up.
Please explain the wisdom of the Falcons drafting a TE in the 1st round and "grooming him to replace Gonzalez". That just means the 1st round pick isn't going to see the field. Don't the Falcons have too many holes to fill for their #1 pick to not play?!?!
Think it's more likely they'll take a TE some time after the first round.
Do you think Jason Smith is a good addition to the offense in New Orleans?
He's worth a shot at least. At one time, he was considered a big-time talent. It hasn't worked out for him so far. But, at worst, he's a guy with some experience.
Pat, What do people see in Byron Bell? The guy is terrible and good for 2 flags a game. He is simply a product of Hurney failing to find a better option.
I hear you. Kind of ironic because a lot of people were giving me grief before last year's draft when I said they needed to upgrade over Bell.
How about the Falcons taking Margus Hunt? He seems to have a really high ceiling.
I think that's at least a possibility. See blog post on him from yesterday.
Is it Super Bowl or bust for Mike Smith and the Falcons? What if the Falcons have a disappointing season. Could we see a coaching change in Atlanta?
I don't think Roddy was giving away any big secret when he said Super Bowl or bust. That pretty much is the situation. Can't see Smith getting fired though, unless things really go badly.
Did you ever hear if the Falcons even made an offer to Brent Grimes before he flew the coop to Miami?
Pretty sure they at least made offer, but think it was a one-year deal for not a lot of money.
Pat...what should the Saints do in the S Roman Harper?i really dont think his contract is too rich to cut...just imo
If they were going to unload him, they would have done so before free agency. Think he had a fairly big roster bonus on something like the fifth day of the league year.
What's the deal with the Clabo release? That seemed to come from out of no where, and he hasn't garnered much (public) attention around the league. Large dropoff in performance? Injuries? Age? What gives?
Preparing for the long-term impact of the Ryan contract. And people I've talked to think his performance dropped off last year.
Tony D got fired in Tampa after not winning in the playoffs consistently, I could def see the same in ATL. Think about it... that would be six out of seven years of choking in the playoffs... something's got to change... not gunna be Ryan
At some point, it could come to that, but I don't think they're quite there yet.
With the Saints salary cap situation, will they be able to sign all their draft picks or will some more contract reworking have to happen first?
They'll have to do more. Think they're right about $1 million under the cap and that's before the Jason Smith deal has come in. But I'd imagine that's only for veteran minimum.
Panthers should draft Vaccaro in round 1 then, draft a big body DT in round 2, then focus on the OL the rest of the draft
I don't think that's a bad idea.
Do you think the Saints will take Jarvis Jones (OLB-Georgia) if he is available at their 1st round pick?
He and Mingo are the two guys I think are most likely at the moment.
With the Falcons losing Luke McCown to the Saints, do you see them drafting a QB with one of their later round picks, say like a Tyler Bray or Landry Jones?
Think they already have a project in Dominique Davis. My guess is they'll add a veteran backup at some point.
None of the offensive skill position players scream "Star" power to me in this years class compared to years past, your thoughts?
Definitely not on the QBs.
Who would be the better addition...Mingo or Jones?
Mingo has more upside, but Jones would be the safer pick.
Jason Smith isn't exactly the type of veteran LT anyone envisioned the Saints bringing in. Are Saints still players in that market?
Think you still could see movement there. He's just a guy they think is at least worth a look.
Would the Panthers trade down?!
If the offer is right, yes, I think they'd love to add a pick or two.
Why are you answering so many questions about Mingo and Jones? You're beating a dead horse. We know you think the Saints should take one of them.
Care to send me a different question on the Saints?
Is there a consensus for what Revis is worth in draft picks? What is the gauge for whether or not the Bucs cough up too much (if the deal is worked out)?
That's pretty much up to Mark Dominik.
gut feeling right now- will Freeman be the QB of the Bucs when 2014 season starts?
I see yes. I think things click for him this year. Just my hunch.
What's more difficult, fixing the Saints defense or singing the national Anthem?
Best line of the day!
Do you believe the reports from other news media that Dominik's job is on the line if the Bucs don't make the play offs?
Think that's a fairly obvious assumption.
Is Tiquan Underwood likely to be the third receiver for the Buccaneers after the addition of Ogletree, Smith, and Page?
Think they'll let them all compete for it in camp.
Are you suprised that the Falcons let both Grimesa and Chris Owens walk while cutting Dunta? seems a risky strategy although Dunta was a liability
Somewhat surprised they let Grimes walk. But Falcons know the medical situation better than we do.
when you you think revis will be traded if the bucs decide to?
Very close to the draft.
Do you think O.C. Sullivan will be around for the 2014 season? He was already looking for a HC job a few months ago.
Isn't just about every coordinator "looking" for a HC job? He needs to have some more success as a coordinator before getting serious interest.
What LB do you see starting with Foster and David this year?
Probably someone that's not on the roster yet.
On Grimes, I seriously can't believe we let him go to Miami for a little as he got signed for. Even with the injury, how can he be good enough to franchise one year and then not be even worth 1 million base with incentives the next? Seems like it would have been worth it...
I hear you. But, like I said, they know far more on the medical situation than we do.
Think this is the perfect year for the Falcons to be featured on "Hard Knocks", agree? So many good storylines to watch in Gonzo's last year, Brian Banks, new FA additions in SJax and Osi, Matt's contract extension, plus rookies and such. Think it happens?
While some in the organization would love it, I sincerely doubt Smith and Dimitroff will go for it. It's a huge year and there already will be enough distractions and pressure.
Who do you think the Bucs will draft with the 13th overall pick if they decide not to trade for Revis
In that scenario, I think they trade up and try to get Milliner. If they stay at 13, maybe Xavier Rhodes.
I have always said I wanted buccaneer ,end who play buccanner style darrelle is great. But he's a headache to the team and doesn't want to anything but ask for more money eyes every year why do I want him?
Just a thought, but ownership might want him more than you do.
Couple more questions. As I said at the start, I have to cut out of here in about five minutes to get on a conference call with Todd McShay.
Milliner and Barron reunited???
same question asked 10 different ways, Pat :Dwill the Falcons re-sign John Abraham?
Getting this from a lot of you. I doubt it. Unless absolutely no one else out there will offer Abe a little bit of money and a starting job.
Saints explosive or mediocre this year??
Think they'll be explosive as long as Brees is QB and Payton is coach.
Vaccaro on run support....... how is he?
Scouting reports indicate he's solid.
All right, I have to cut it off now and get to my conference call. Thanks to all for stopping by. Have a great weekend.
