Hey gang. Right off, I'll hit on the thing burning on your minds: Quinnipiac and Yale in the NCAA's first all-Connecticut college hockey Finals. "Only seven miles distant of each other as the crow flies," said Bucci. This is true. Rivals meet. The cutting board will be hoisted. Lots of smart, fairly rich dudes on skates. Anyway, we can answer your many questions about that. But first: URIAH HALL. You see what he did to Dylan Andrews' face? Lawd. Let's get this thing rolling.
Who do you think rich franklin will fight next and what do you think of rodger bowling in his fight?
Not sure what's happening with Rich Franklin. I'd still like to see him in another fight. And when the time comes for him to hang them up, maybe he goes out like Jorge Rivera and Chris Lytle did...he makes sure we know it's a swan song. As for Bowling, dude is fun to watch (like all brawlers). Still remember him clobbering that kid with the Nazi tattoos...you could hear every blow.
Did meathead deserve the suspended contract? And will the "review" lead to just a slap on the wrist (fine), or do you think they cut him.
Hard to say here. In my mind, the UFC needed to make an example of somebody, and here stumbles Mitrione with his smug opinion. So he becomes the cautionary tale. Now, will that lead to people behaving themselves in situations like this? And will the UFC be consistent when bigger stars make insensitive statements in public? A lot remains to be seen.
Is Uriah Hall willing to fight top 10 opponent?
First thing's first, he has to fight Kelvin Gastelum, who is all sick and tired of the hype choo-choo waking him up in the night. Say Hall does the same thing to Gastelum that he's done to all the others...he'd still need to beat somebody else in the Octagon before I'd stick him against a viable top-tenner.
Any chance they stick GSP on the Milwaukee card in August?
Originally I thought that might be the case, Omar. It is, after all, Harley's 110th birthday, and only vampires have that kind of longevity. But, given that Pettis/Aldo is happening (probably in Rio) in August 3, I think they'll have a decent non-title fight as the headliner. Maybe a top contender's bout. But no GSP.
People who got to Quinnipiac are not smart. I went to high school with a few.
Blasphemy!!! (Wish I could dispute you).
Looks like there's a Twitter beef between Tomas Rios and War Machine. Can I have an line?
I think Rios is only asking for a date, right? My guess is Rios makes a better conversationalist than some of the cats War Machine has spent time with in jail. Plus: Rios could be blog fodder. They can use each other for their writing projects.
Do you ever get confused between the Uriahs and the Urijahs and so forth?
I still envision Uriah Heep whenever I hear Urijah Faber. It was Urijah Faber's parents that should get the wrist lashings here. Who sticks a random "j" in there? Both Heep (fictional) and Hall (fictional seeming) at least spell it right.
Lot of talk about whether Urijah Faber is a HOF type fighter or not. What's your take?
Been seeing some of that. Guess it was an article by somebody at B/R, which I didn't see (traveling yesterday). My take: He's had a solid career, been a champion, beat some guys early in his career that still look impressive, but it hasn't sustained over the years in big fights. I remember talking to Cruz a couple of years ago, and he thought it was because Faber got to become a star and got into too many business....spreading himself too think. This is possible.
Do you think MMA will exist in 50 years?
Of course. It existed 50 years ago (piecemeal). It'll exist in 50 years, too. Even if they ride hooverboards to the cage.
How long is Matt Mittriones suspension. Will his "suspension" even matter if he wouldn't fight for 4 months anyways?
Not sure on the length of his suspension, but it might dovetail real nicely with the usual amount of time between fights, too. The question is: Will the UFC cut him? I doubt it. He just had a good knockout, and the heavyweight division is still wadeable it's so shallow.
Do you think that Dana agrees with Mitrione but obviously can't say so? It'snot like he was wrong about what he said, just the way he said it.
It's true his should have expressed his opinion a little less Meatheady. It made him sound dumb to come at it like he did. As for Dana, I have no earthly idea what he thinks the subject. More than anything, if Fallon Fox began to look like a 37-year old transgender fighter with star power, Dana White would see this and this only: Star power.
Is Sonnen really this cool and nice of a dude?
Haven't spent enough time with him to know. At one point, when it looked like he'd be helicoptered into Brazil for the second Silva fight and asked to sort of Bear Grills his way out, I wanted to do a feature on him that would attempt to get to the bottom of that very question. Alas, that didn't happen. He has an on/off switch, though. He's really pretty level-headed.
tiger v field? who you got
You don't like John Huh?
Hi Chuck, what's the favoreite place youve visited in covering the UFC?
Got to be Rio for obvious reasons. The crowd there was berserk.
in your opinion did mousasi move up the ranks at all after beating a volunteer from the audience (lattifi)?
No. He didn't move up or down. He hovered right in place, and fired a utilitarian jab into Latifi's grill for three rounds. He'll get a top ten guy next (hopefully nearing on Gusty's level), and then his stock will be at stake.
Does Carlos Condit remain a top-5 talent at WW without greatly picking up his defensive wrestling?
I thought he might still get MacDonald, if MacDonald was wanting of that fight. Now that they've made MacDonald/Ellenberger (which makes more sense from a rankings standpoint), I'm not sure. Since this is the case, I'd like to see him get a guy who's maybe a cusp top ten guy, give him a little less after bouts with GSP and Hendricks and Diaz (a champion and two top contenders).
Not too much hype for El nino and Henderson fight considering its a champion vs champion match. I'm going to be there on 4/20 !
Strange how quiet that lead-up has been; guess the PPV a week later is gobbling up the hype machine. But that's a great fight. For so many years people were openly accusing Melendez of being an imposter in the top ten P4P conversation because "he hasn't fought anybody." Well, he's the day of truth. I for one will be glued to that fight.
Quinnipiac or Yale? might go to the window with your john huh recommendation
Haha. I can understand that. No Michigan representation. I'm going Yale.
Will Rampage Jackson fight in another organization?
Good question. I'd like to see him in Bellator, but all's been quiet on that front. Might be time to check in with his camp and see what he's got going on.
Do you think Uriah Hall has the mental game necessary for long term success? Can't put my finger on exactly what it is but...maybe it's just the TUF editing/setting.
Yeah, they did sort of frame him as a little bit introspective and doubting. That could be editing, but my guess is it's fairly real. Some people use those kinds of doubts to ascend right up the rungs. GSP comes to mind. It's hard to say how Hall's career will play out. In the fight game, though, it's great that he's entering it with so much intrigue.
Travis Brown or Gonzaga?
Going Browne. I think that Bigfoot fight (and injury) lit a fire. He was rolling before that, too.
Where do you recommend I place my bets for UFC? Always wanted to have a bet on it but never know where to look. I git Cole Miller and Cat Z winning. You heard it here firsy!
You mean besides a sportsbook in Las Vegas? If you mean Vegas, you can get decent odds at MGM (I can see my Vegas-based colleague Brett Okamoto shaking his head as I write that). If you mean online, there are a bunch. Bovada?
Any initial thought on who'll be considered the favorite in the Macdonald/Ellenberger fight?
So tough. Ellenberger has the better track record, but Vegas has to also field perception/momentum. MacDonald is just one of those guys who's been so dominant. I think MacDonald will end up being the slight favorite (again, Okamoto is shaking his head and audibly sighing).
Why is the UFC Ring is Octagon instead of Square?
Geometry was never my strong suit. So long as they don't refer to it as a triangle, I find little reason to quibble.
It's Friday, the sun is shining, the girls are out, and Mindenhall has the auto update ON. Life is good.......
I always have the auto update on, Ken, but sometimes it ignores me. (And the sun isn't out in Connecticut...unfortunately).
Which is/was the more lopsided fight beforehand, Bigfoot/Overheem or Cain vs Bigfoot II?
Don't know the official odds, but has to be Velasquez/Bigfoot II, right? The image of that first fight was a strong one. Within seconds Bigfoot was on his back...a few seconds later squeamish types were turning away in mute horror! That's the kind of thing that stays with the better public.
Seattle Fox card off to a great start, DJ/Moraga (Likely), Rory/Jake, Tarec/Robbie, who do you think completes the card??
No idea on who else, but that card is definitely shaping up. Ellenberger/MacDonald is a crazy fight. I've contemplated that before, and am glad to see it happen. Think Tarec/Lawler is good too.
Who do you think has a more promising career ahead of them, Hall or McGregor?
Tell you what, McGregor was very impressive. Whereas Hall is calling people crazy to fight the likes of Anderson Silva, it feels like McGregor would fight anybody, anywhere (anytime). I liked his poise. There was something about his decimation of Brimage that looked...too easy. Think he'll end up making the bigger splash ultimately.
Sonnen have a shot to beat Bones?
Let me see how I can put this without sounding like a cynic....LOL! No.
Who has a legit shot of beating Benson? He's got size on most and those leg kicks are deadly and have range.
To me, the one guy who sits out on the horizon that looks like Bendo antidote is Gray Maynard. Big, strong, wrestler like that, who won't be pushed around? I like his chances. Not that Gil (or Pettis) can't beat him, though. Glad we get to find out how Melendez fares against the best.
I am surprised at how much love Cat is getting from the betting lines. Who do you think will win versus her and Tate?
If you'd mentioned Cat Zingano's name six months ago, people would have thought you were talking about a pink wine. But here she is, thrust into the spotlight, and with that comes some loose expectations. She's tough. I still think Tate wins it, though.
You see Uriah Hall as a future contender?
Since we have that big word "future" in there, then yeah, I do. If he can keep his head on straight, I think he can make a run for the belt. Will Silva still be the top man at that time? Or will we be talking big about Weidman/Hall II?
(It took everything in my power not to type Weidman/Hall 2, Electric Boogaloo).
Is BJ Penn done?
I doubt it. I think he'll fight again, hopefully at 155. Two completely different careers between his time at welter and his time at lightweight.
Since you outfox the foxes each fall, where to do you fall on Fallon Fox?
I love my Seussian chatters. Very nice.
GSP will get a lot of boring chants if he fights outside of Montreal
Very good question. This last time when GSP was fighting Diaz, and shot for his umpteenth takedown (and got it for the umpteenth time), the Montreal crowd still burst into raptures while the media grunted. My guess is, if he does that fight in the States, he might hear a few boos. Out there, though? No sir. They love him. And everything about him. From the Gi on down.
So your power gave in to the boogaloo........you weak , weak , man.
It *nearly* gave in. I held myself back.
Have you ever undergone Psychoanalysis?
Aside from getting hit in the head by a Jung book that somebody threw at me in college, no. This feels like a loaded question.
how excited are you to see big dave herman come back after his suspension?
This is tough, for obvious reasons. It reminds me of poor Alex from the Clockwork Orange, who was reintroduced to society after being conditioned out of his violent impulses. I feel the same for Pee Wee. That pot rehabilitation is no joke. Not many people come out of that "the same," if you know what I mean. Guess we'll see what his mettle looks like soon enough.
am i the only person excited for the larkin carmont fight and the elkins mendes fight?
Trey, no sir, you're not. I am looking forward to Elkins/Mendes. Elkins is this silent creeper at 145, and Mendes is really right up there in the top three or four. Anxious to see how that plays out. Also, any Carmont fight gets me interested. Larkin has good hands. I think that'll be fun. (Never forget Scott Lighty).
Chuckie, who would you say is currently the best P4P fighter outside of the UFC?
Maybe Pat Curran. So young, and adding wrinkles. His all-around game is sound. I'd go with him.
How does Lawal get beat in the 8 man light heavy tournament and then get put right back in the next FOUR man tournament?
Is that what's happening? Well, I guess because he's King Mo. Hope he doesn't take anything for granted next time through, either way. He'd either lose his credibility, or the Bellator tournament really does begin to look like the "toughest in sports."
Watched the Super Fight League stream today and couldn't believe this is their 15th event. Is India becoming a valid MMA market?
I know the UFC has been talking about breaking into the Indian market for a long time. Yeah, I think it is.
CHUCK! Long time, brutha. Hate to ask another Uriah Hall question but this feels a lot like another guy I really enjoyed watching and who impressively destroyed nobodies pre-UFC. Buy or Sell on Hall?
Ash, my man. It would seem...shrug-offish to sell Hall who has shown nothing but brilliance this season. Level of competition is what it is, but he's been well above it. I'd buy Hall. His only losses were to Weidman and Philippou, both of whom show up in the ESPN top ten rankings. My guess is he's a better fighter now.
What are the chances that Hall becomes TUF and fights a guy like Patrick Cote as a "welcome to the UFC?"
Interesting. Honestly, that might not be a bad idea. A "name" like Cote, before feeding Hall to the bigs (or feeding the bigs to Hall, as the case might be). I'd expect that level of competition for him out of the gate. THAT IS: If he beats Gastelum.
Which UFC fighter has the best entrance and music in your opinion?
There are so many good ones, and so many lousy ones. Always enjoyed Fitch's entrance to Rusty Cage (Johnny Cash version). What I don't enjoy is the early-aughts dance floor/aerobic workout that Wanderlei comes rolling out to (sorry, I know a lot of you love "Sandstorm").
This is a good chat. You have a lot of fans!
Thanks, Ian. Does seem busy in here today. Maybe the chat picks up some steam. I took my cues from Anik, the original MMA chat host who told me just to type as fast as I could. (This should excuse me from some of the brainlessness).
jon jones vs anderson silva catchweight 195 who ya got, what round, and how does it end?
Wow. At a catchweight, I'd tend to lean towards Silva. The extra cut might sap Jones some of his strength, and for Silva that would be nothing.
Coming from Ireland im obviously going to ask about McGregor. Who do you think he should fight next? and how long before he gets a top 10 opponent?
His handling of Brimage was so methodical and impressive that I feel like they'll give him a good leap in competition. Maybe not top ten...but, imagining him and Koch or some of those types is captivating. My guess is he's in the top ten by the end of 2013 easy.
Where is MMA Live?? Do I have to put out a APB?
Crystal, I wish I could tell you it's right around the corner and will be airing again soon. But right now, still on "indefinite" hold. So here's how I'll word it: Hopefully soon.
I thought Fitch came out to A Boy Named Sue? Cowboy and Faber also have great entrances.
You like the Kid Rock entrance? I kind of do, too. Revs the crowd up. Carlos Condit coming out to Rage Against the Machine also foretells something truthful that's about to happen. He fights synonymous with his walkout song.
Any idea what is going on with Matt Hamill and whether he will fight again after winning in September?
I haven't heard too much on Hamill. I thought I read he wanted to fight again, but nothing much out of that camp.
Sup Chuck! Didn't Travis Lutter get a shot at spider silva after tuf season? Why couldn't Uriah Hall get one; he's been quite impressive an gave tuf some well needed buzz.
That particular season was a "comeback" edition of TUF. The dangling carrot at the end of it was a title shot. That's why Serra got one against GSP, too. Not the case this time. Hall will have to keep clobbering fools for a bit.
Matt Hughes walk out was moving.......
Also synonymous. It's easy to believe that he's got a shotgun a rifle and a 4-wheel drive. Just as it's entirely possible that his grandpa taught him to live off the land.
Noticed only one of your colleagues had the testicular fortitude to pick Kelvin over Hall. Kudos to Franklin ........
The limb he's out on....quakes.
Where has Werdum been all this time.
He was ready to fight a long time ago, but didn't get the call. He was doing promotional trips in South America, etc, and TUF came along. So he took it. Does feel like an especially long time for him to be out.
Fedor from Pride. All time great walkout music.
Speaking of Wanderlei...any word on who's next for him? Uriah Hall??
Sorry if this has been asked, but who do you think will be next in line at 155? Is it Maynard? What if he loses? Would Grant be #1 contender?
Grant is a TOUGH out for Maynard. Again, with the influx of great match-ups going on, that one is flying under the radar. If Maynard wins, my guess is he has the inside track to the Bendo/Melendez winner (particularly if it's Bendo). Pettis is tied up with Aldo....
Do you agree with the UFC's decision to still refer to Dominick Cruz as their BW champ?
I've gone back and forth on this. They didn't strip him because it was an injury, and I'm okay with it. But I hope they have solid evidence that he's ready to return soon after Barao/Wineland.
OK, guys, I need to bounce out of here. Thanks for the questions. Seemed like we had a lot of people in here today, very good mix of curiosities. Hit my twitter feed, @ChuckMindenhall, and we'll see you in here next Friday.
