Chat with Dan Graziano

Dan Graziano
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings. I imagine you have questions. Please ask them.

Dustin C (Fort Wayne In)

The eagles need a cb or another safety i know he is old but why not take the chance at vet min and take charles woodson he would be a solid starter or great off the bench. That would put depth in those position in case some one got hurt. What do you think???

Dan Graziano
  (12:02 PM)

I think they should add another piece or two to the secondary, yes, but the Eagles are focused on younger players and, I believe, wisely so. Chip Kelly's focus is a long-term one and not a 2013 one.

Rahul (Singapore)

Hey Dan With the Raiders and Browns looking to trade down according to NFL.com, is their anyway the Giants would consider moving up to take Dee Milner or Ezekiel Ansah?

Dan Graziano
  (12:02 PM)

Doesn't seem like them to trade up that high.

Daniel Badajosa (El Paso Texas)

Do you belive all the Cowboys need is a good o-line?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

I think if they had a good offensive line (instead of the very bad one they have right now), the Cowboys would look like a playoff team to me.

Jake (Arkansas)

Why dont the Cowboys snatch up one of these tackles that way it will free them up to get a guard in the first and a saftey in the second. Solves most of their problems.

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

No rush on the tackles that I can see, if you're talking about Winston & Co. The market isn't pushing teams to sign those guys right now.

chris (Rochester)

Hey Dan, I was wondering if you see the Eagles resigning Jeremy Maclin? I saw a video on NFL.cm where they listed him as a potential trade target as well. Your thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:04 PM)

I think this is a big year for Maclin and that decision. He has the talent to be a long-term piece for them, but I'd make him prove it, and I think they will.

Tanard Jackson (DC)

What's with all of the talk of the Skins needing a Free Safety? I'll be good.

Dan Graziano
  (12:05 PM)

You are suspended through at least Aug. 31. And no guarantee to return after that. The Redskins must make another plan.

Tom (D.C.)

Should the Eagles trade down and draft Tavon Austin?

Dan Graziano
  (12:06 PM)

No, I think they should stay put and take the best player who's there at 4.

Brad Girson (New Orleans, LA)

Hey Dan,What are your thoughts on the guards going in the top ten in so many mocks? Obviously, guards are not normally considered top 10 or even top 20 picks. Decastro went later than expected last year. Do you believe either Cooper or Warmack are available at 18?

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

I think there's a chance. As you point out, history tells us it's likely. I guess the relative lack of skill-position talent at the top is moving those offensive linemen up those mocks.

Kyle (VA)

I've seen a lot of mocks having the Skins take a CB at 51. If we did this, do you think it'd make sense to move D-hall to Safety?

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

I like the idea of Hall at free safety. What I don't know is whether Hall does, and that matters a lot.

Tommy (MD)

How long do you think Kyle Shannahan stays the OC in Washington before he moves to aother team, or do you think he takes over his dads job?

Dan Graziano
  (12:10 PM)

Well, if they have another 10-win season this year with the QB hurt, I'd have to think he gets a long look...

Matthew (Westminster, MD)

Do you think Goodell is going to come down on Chip Kelly at all for this Oregon situation?

Dan Graziano
  (12:11 PM)

Nope. Did he do anything to Pete Carroll that I forget?

dan (syracuse)

what do you think the cowboys plan is with Free

Dan Graziano
  (12:11 PM)

I think they'll probably cut him June 1.

Erik (Il)

Will Ware have a "bounce back" season, or should we expect to see Lee and Carter become the stars of this defense?

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

I mean... yes to both?

Steve (Delaware)

The mock drafts have the NYG selecting O-Line (Fluker) in the first round, but I suspect they go DL or DB in the first round....What do you think?

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

I think you're right.

Jim (Dallas)

With Jerry's habit of wheelin and dealing do you see him trading up if one of the guards go early to take the other one?

Dan Graziano
  (12:13 PM)

Yeah, possible, but I'm not sure how far. I think they start making calls at around 14 or 15.

skoolz (nyc)

is this Tuck's last season on the Giants? he hasn't done much the last couple of seasons to warrant an extension IMO.

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

A little bit like what we said with Maclin earlier in the chat. That decision's probably going to rest on his on-field performance in 2013.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

Put your Kiper wig on and let us know who you think the Eagles will take at #4.

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

We have our blogger mock draft next week. You'll have to wait until then for my Eagles pick.

Tom (Donnellson)

Of the NFC East teams, do you have one that you would feel most likely to make a trade up?

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

Dallas.

Andrew (DC)

You gotta think if there's a top safety still there in the 2nd when the Skins pick, they have to take that over a CB right? I know their CBs aren't a strength, but having a better pass rush with Orakpo and Carriker returning should make things a little easier for them, right? Meanwhile their safety situation is such a mess.

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, I think you have assessed the situation well.

BKW (Mount Airy, MD)

Will you be in NYC for the draft? With Twitter updates?

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Yes. Yes.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Does Dez Bryant become a superstar this year? Or will be 2013 be another season of unfulfilled potential for the talented, but troubled, wideout?

Dan Graziano
  (12:17 PM)

I'm fairly certain he became a superstar in 2012.

Wayne (Va Bch)

The Giants finish at 8-8 this year or worse. What's your argument?

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

I don't have one. The last four years they've been 8-8, 10-6, 9-7, 9-7. Your prediction is incredibly reasonable.

John (Crofton, Maryland)

Would it surprise you if Chip Kelly implemented a "quarterback by committee" this year in the NFL, switching between 3 guys (Foles, Kelly and Vick)?

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

Yes. And who's Kelly?

JJT (TX)

The Giants finish at 11-5 this year or better. What's your argument?

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

What have they done to make this their best team since 2008?

Carlo (Toronto)

In light of yesterday's devastating attack, do you worry when attending large functions like the Draft?

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

A little bit, yeah. You think about it from time to time. Never worse than when I went back to covering Yankees games after 9/11.

matt (USA)

in case you didn't hear, the NFL schedule is to be released Thursday @ 8pm!

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

I heard. I still can't figure out why it's such a big deal. We already know the opponents.

Matt (Tampa)

Can you beat any of us in Madden?

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

Probably not. I don't play it.

Steve (Delaware)

Sorry a Cruz question, but I couldn't help it. There seems to be a lot of worry about the contract situation, but why would either side want to sign before the RFA offer sheet deadline or the draft, which could offer leverage to either side. I just don't picture Cruz playing for 2.7 million this year and I think he signs a long term deal before training camp. What do you think?

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

Possible. But one side would have to dramatically alter its position. As you mention, that could happen after Friday, which is the offer-sheet deadline.

dan (syracuse)

Rt tackle is as big a need as guard in big D if dallas cuts free, what do you see them doing at tackle

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

Draft Fluker or sign Winston?

PooPooLighter (Chillin like Villian in Pvillian)

What are your thoughts on Honey Badger making it to the skins at 51?

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

Oh I think he'll be there. I haven't seen anyone give him a second-round grade.

Carlo (Toronto)

Lol if you had to watch one which would it be.... Schedule Release Show or TOP 100 Players of 2013??

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

I do have to watch one. It's the schedule release. And it really ticks me off that it's up against Parks & Recreation.

Jay (Philly)

Have you seen the Cordarelle Patterson youtube highlights? He is like a 6'3" Barry Sanders. Any chance the skins go after him?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

He's a first-rounder, right? Skins can't get him if that's the case. And in general, I have to imagine almost everyone looks good in their YouTube highlight videos.

Tom (D.C.)

Adam Scott golfer > Adam Scott Parks and Rec?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

No way. Not with that cheesy putter he uses.

Chris (Hoboken)

They televise the release of the NFL schedule? If someone is watching (not work related) I'd say they need a hobby.

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

Oh, they watch. We'll get the press release on Friday about how the ratings were higher than any World Series game ever, etc. It's a football-crazed world we live in.

Nate (WV)

Do you think the Eagles will trade Nick Foles on or before draft day?

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

No.

Mike (NY)

What do you think about Garcon's refusal to have surgery? Am I totally nuts to think that the Skins should consider cutting him if he isn't close to 100% by the time the season starts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

Yes. You are nuts. Weren't they 9-1 with him in the lineup?

sean (SoCal)

I been bugging you about this but I say the Cowboys and 49'ers trade 1st round picks and Boys bet extra ammo in 2nd and 3rd rounds........

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

Anything's possible.

Agent P (Tri State Area)

The schedule release is so us losers can plan the fall trips to see our teams play...

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

Oh, I understand. I just don't get why it's a TV show.

Andy (K.C.)

Given how the playcalling was at Oregon & Kelly's desire to play fast, do you think the QB with a headset in the helmet gives him some advantages?

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

Maybe. But I still think it depends on the QB.

Curt (Dallas)

do the patriots make a play for Cruz now that Sanders was resigned by the steelers?

Dan Graziano
  (12:30 PM)

Doubt it. That was for a third-rounder, right? This would be a first-rounder. Big difference.

Don (Indiana)

Hey, the Cowboys need offensive lineman. This shouldn't be news. They will try to get one in the first couple rounds. Still not news. I am concerned with what they do at the 1. Clearly Brent is out and Ratliff has shown durability issues recently. I think that this position may be more important to address right now then Safety, what do you think.

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

I think I agree with you. The conventional wisdom says the Cowboys need a playmaking safety because they haven't had one in so long. And that may be so. But I think you're right that the line might be the more pressing need.

Kevin G. (East Rutherford, NJ)

What will it take for the Giants to fire their offensive coordinator?

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

Probably a new head coach.

sam (nyc)

Question Breakdown: WAS: 9, PHI: 9, DAL: 9, NY: 9. Misc: 8Pretty nice balance, there.

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

Thanks. Now it's all 9s.

Nick (MD)

If not CB and S what do skins get in 2nd?

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

Linebacker?

Isaac (Wautoma WI)

Would you say that its pretty safe to say that the Cowboys draft Vaccaro

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

No. I don't think they should, first of all, and moreover I don't think it's "safe" to say anything with any certainty about who'll be picked 18th in the draft.

Lupo (Chicago)

Is the news of the Oregon "violations" a 1)big deal 2) little deal 3) non-story , as it relates to Kelly's NFL coaching career?

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

Non-story.

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

As it relates to his NFL career, that is. It's certainly a story about the problems with college athletics, not the least of which is these coaches' ability to run out on a problem and make it someone else's.

Dale (NY)

Any chance the Giants nab Te'o at 19?

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

Hang on. Trying to see if I can remember the last time the Giants took a linebacker in the first round. I know I have it somewhere in my notes...

Wayne (Va Bch)

1985!

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

So close.

Isaac (Wautoma WI)

What guy would you draft if hes there at 18 Fluker, Cooper, Vaccaro, or Patterson

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Cooper.

Carlo (Toronto)

You really thin the skins next biggest need is Linebacker?Skins Needs = S, OT, CB, WR, LB

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

I didn't say that. I said that might be what they pick if not CB/S.

greg (va)

i predict redskins in Denver on the shanahan Denver comeback Reunion plane week 1 vs payton .

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

Maybe, but I thought Denver was the most likely first week opponent for Baltimore. Or am I remembering wrong?

Farooq (Birmingham (UK))

Carl banks back in 84. But was also long time (Dayne in 2000) before Gmen took a 1st round RB until last year

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

Wait. Your contention is that 12 years is a comparatively long time to 29 years?

PooPooLighter (Chillin like Villian as a Pvillian)

In regards to the sanctions, isn't it more of a disservice to the players that need work to handicap 2 of 32 teams that need their services? I know the skins and boys were the ones punished but it seems that the players are the ones to really suffer (except for us fans)

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

Yeah, and especially so when you consider that they're two of the bigger-spending teams, traditionally.

Joe (DE)

The Eagles added players at almost every position but O-line. Does this make you think it's almost certain they draft either Fisher, Joeckel, or Johnson?

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

I am far from certain about the Eagles' plans at No. 4, but I think that taking one of the tackles would be a good idea for them. And if they don't, it's likely because they believe a return to health is all their line needs right now.

sean (SoCal)

don't you think with all the changes in Dallas it appears Jason is there for the long haul? He seems to be turning that aircraft carrier around and Jerry just needs to stay patient now that Romo is there long term.......

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Yeah, I don't think Garrett's position is as precarious as many seem to assume.

sam (nyc)

Better games next year: NYG v. PHI or DAL v. WAS?

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

DAL vs. WAS. I think of the four teams, the Eagles are the most likely to have a bad year.

Kylan (Mexico)

Do you think Dez Bryant would have a more prosperous career if he was on a team with a more capable QB, such as the Redskins or Eagles?

Dan Graziano
  (12:44 PM)

I mean, there's just no way to make people happy. Bryant just had a season with 92 catches for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns from a QB who threw for 4,903 yards. Who on the Eagles is a better QB than Tony Romo?

Troy (Camp Pendleton)

would you rather the cowboys draft cooper and sign winston or draft a tackle and look for a guard in house?

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

I think the Cooper/Winston plan would be a good one for them.

Steve (Bristol)

Do you see DeAngelo resigning as a change with him and putting the team first finally, or was there just no really market for him so he might as well go where he knows?

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

I think the second thing you said.

LB (Tallahassee, FL)

You saying Eagles are likely to have a bad year? Can you please explain that some? Offseason looking good when others (Cowboys, Redskins) can't do nothing due to cap reasons.

Dan Graziano
  (12:49 PM)

I don't know that they're likely to have a bad year. I'm not making predictions in April. What I said was that, of the four teams in the division, I think they're most likely to have a bad year. They were 4-12 last year and have made a number of changes with a long-term vision. They don't have a quarterback about whom they or their fans can feel confident. I have more questions about them than the other three teams, and I think of the four, they're the one most focused on the years beyond 2013. Obviously, I could be completely wrong and they could go 13-3 and make me look foolish. But that's how I read it from April 16.

GM (Miami)

Dan, since the 3-4 usually takes a year to implement do you think Kelly might just be using this year to assess players and wait for a better QB crop? Even though he might never admit this?

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

Yeah, that's along the lines of what I'm saying.

Troy (Camp Pendleton)

have you done any research to see who the cowboys should have chosen had they not traded their second pick away last year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

Just looking at who was still there, the guy who jumps out to me is Peter Konz, the Wisconsin center. If Dallas stays put, they could have ended up with Konz and, say, Fletcher Cox. I think that would have looked pretty sweet.

9to82 (Anywhere)

The Boys would have chosen Michael Brokers in the first and then Bobby Wagner in the second if not for the trade.

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

I mean, that's what they've said. But I don't trust what teams say publicly in general, and certainly not the things they say to justify the moves they've made after the fact.

9to82 (Anywhere)

Cox was gone to Eagles by the time Boys picked in the first and Jerry said he wanted Wagner

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

Eagles traded up to get Cox, and didn't need to trade their second-rounder to do it. Again, it's an example. The kind of players they could have had if they'd stayed put. Obviously, if Claiborne becomes a star it looks like a good move.

Brian (DC)

I am a diehard Redskins fan and by default have nothing but disdain for the Cowboys, but bias aside: how can you continue to argue that Tony Romo is a quality quarterback? He's talented, and I like him personally, but he has done nothing but fail when it counts.

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

I don't know. I guess I have this crazy idea that my job is to present the whole picture as opposed to just always parroting standard conventional wisdom lines like "he has done nothing but fail when it counts." I'm a little crazy like that.

Greg (Greenbelt, MD)

What's the first thing you're going to do after the chat?

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

Eat.

Nathaniel (Canada)

I just read that Houston is going to have the biggest video boards in the NFL. Will this bother Jerry in Dallas?

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Probably.

Anthony (nyc)

Brian's arguement is idiotic. Please dont answer questions like that. Most fans know better than him. Is this the yr Hankerson breaks out or is he is what he has shown so far. below average?

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Third-year WRs are supposed to be guys to watch. Can't write off Hankerson yet.

Glenn ((Fort Bragg))

What does it take for Tom Coughlin to get fired?

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

He'd probably have to punch every member of the Mara family in the face once a day for a month.

Andrew (NY)

Trying again to get under the wire, why wouldn't the Skins take a look at Woodson in a Winfield like situation?

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Don't know. But to this point, they haven't. They must have seen something in Winfield they like better.

Andrew (work)

how many questions did you get today?

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

552. Light day. Maybe it picks up next week, two days before the draft. See you then.
