Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Let's do this thing!

harry (miami)

I'm seeing more draft "pronostigators" linking Eric Fisher to the Chiefs with the first pick in the draft. Do you see this as possible and in what order do you rank Joeckel, Fisher and Lane Johnson? Thanks...

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

I can def see Fisher going first overall. I think the pick will be Joeckel, but I also think all three are very close. Johnnson has the most work to do, but also is a rare rare athlete. I think all three go in the Top 5. BTW, part of me thinks Star should be the first overall pick and just lock up Albert long term...

Max (NY)

REALLLYYY intrigued by EJ Manuel - if the Jets get the Bucs 13th pick is that too early for him or should they pull the trigger?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

I wouldn't go that early on Manuel, but I too am very intrigued. I don't see him getting past Philly's second pick...maybe earlier in a trade up

John (Wisc)

If the Packers traded down from the 26th pick, lets say to the Eagles for the 33rd pick. What else would they receive in compensation?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

3rd rounder or so

Anthony (NYC:NY)

What's playing in the background bro? The 10th pick in the 2nd round of this year's draft doesn't seem to be too much for a top 5-7 LT in the prime of his career (w/o any significant injury concerns). Seems like a win/win for both teams (especially when Miami have the cap space for Albert). What's the hold up between the Chiefs & Dolphins trade here?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Right now Eminem 8 Mile...reminds me of the Pitt highlight tape while I was there that I showed recruits 500 times-Larry tearing it up back then for the Panthers. Anyways...yeah, I agree that Miami lands Albert, but I think they would prefer Lane Johnson in a trade up. Albert will be pricey to sign remember.

Harrison (Minneapolis)

How much will Keenan Allen's reported 'red flag' drug test at the combine affect his draft stock? Where do you think he will go?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

If it is true, it hurts. Because he also has a medical red flag and a speed red flag, which is part of medical obviously-not that speed was ever his strong suit. SO many WRs too. But I still REALLY like the player. Someone will get a steal.

Steve (NY)

Is Is FSU DE Tank Carradine a better long-term prospect than his teammate Bjoern Werner?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

I think so, esp as a pass rusher. More explosive. Werner is pretty safe though. In a 4-3, Werner is more the LDE type while Tank is more of the open side edge guy type.

Xander (Philly)

8 too high for Patterson? I get the feeling the Bills are going offense/offense in Rd. 1 and 2. Dream scenario is they trade back and get Patterson mid to late first and then the QB of the future in Rd 2.

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

8 is too early for Patterson. Immense ability and utterly amazing with the ball in his hands, but if he truly struggles to learn, that is a major problem and could really stunt his growth. Not bashing the player at all and he can be GREAT, but eight seems rich.

frank (lebanon)

matt barkeley reminds me of .. clausen...mcCoy.... NOT WORTHY of NFL.

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Pennington

Adam (Oregon)

You know TD in Atlanta is ready to make another splash during the draft...my question is who does he target when he moves up.?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

It better be someone to help the Falcons defend the pass...CB or DE...they are VERY light in both departments right now

Harry (Babylon, NY)

If the Revis trade rumors of a 1, 3 & 5 are accurate wouldn't that be close to a homerun for the Jets?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

I thought TBay's first for Revis straight up was fair...that sounds too rich...Jets must say Yes to that. Is TBay bidding against themself? Seems that way. BTW, the Jets new front office has been quite impressive this offseason. Also, if I were TBay or ATL, or others I suppose, I would be calling Philly for Cole/Curry/Graham...three high quality 4-3 DEs

Handel (Canton)

I know this draft doesn't point to trading up but no way the 49ers can add as manny guys as they have draft picks. Are they more likely to trade up this year or package a couple of picks for future picks?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Both...I expect a lot of Niners movement because you are right-can't use all those picks. If I was SF, I would target S, TE and DL with my three picks-and where they sit, there should be great options. I want to see Jesse Williams in SF! AFter that, start selling picks.

Harrison (Minneapolis)

What WR's do you think will still be available at 23 & 25 for the Vikings?? Of those, who do you think the Vikings would take?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Betting only Austin and Patterson (most likely) are off the board. Patterson would be FANTASTIC. I LOVE Hopkins too. Hunter makes some sense as well. They obviously need a WR, but waiting until Round 2 for a guy like Wheaton wouldn't be the end of the world

Dan A. (Rochester, NY)

Matt, the Raider have a huge need for pass rushers. Do you think Dion Jordan as a good fit in a 4-3 DE?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Better in a 4-3 and I expect OAK to go DT with a guy like Floyd or Star...but that team needs EVERYthing

Paul (Albany, OR)

Matt, with the two picks in the first round, who do the Rams pick that allows you to say they nailed those two picks? Thank you

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Unlike most experts, I don't see WR as STL's biggest need...instead, they NEED Safety help and if they could land one of the two guards, that OL would be set with five quality starters...but I am betting Cooper and Warmack are gone-too many teams in front of them need OL. So, Vacarro and Patterson perhaps? Ogletree also makes sense

Johnny (Denver)

Given the patterns of the last draft and the depth of defensive players in this draft, it's pretty much a given the Broncos trade out of the first round right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

They can really go any direction on D, which is a nice position to be in. Certainly could move back, but if a guy like S Williams is sitting there, I think you just grab him

frank (lebanon)

TEO IS THE NEXT RAY LEWIS... WHAT DO U THINK

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Not even close. Teo is the next Puz..give or take

Tarek (NYC)

Hey, the Raiders don't need everything! They have a great kicker and.....Okay we have a kicker!

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

They have a LT too! Some RBs! I like the new LBs! Good young center!

Tim Tebow (NYC)

How much longer should I try and be QB? Is the time now for me to try a position change,I'd be a decent 3rd TE/HB wouldn't I ?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Well that depends Timmy...Can you catch? That is a slightly important aspect of playing TE that many tend to overlook in these position changes.

tippy (michigan)

Hi Matt, Who makes the most since for Detroit at pick #5?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

I think they end up with Fisher or Lane J...and that is awesome...worst case is a DE like Ansah, but I would go LT in Round 1 and DE in Round 2!

frank (lebanon)

youre in for a rude awakening...TEO is toooo underrated.

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Good player, but no skills that leap off the page...two down guy? If so, ouch

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

I agree Star is top 5 worthy...if he drops to around the teens, should the Broncos package up and nab him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Wow, that would be great. One of these big time DTs will fall a bit. Could be him, but I have him pencilled in as going to Philly in Round 1

james (nj)

what are you hearing with the eagles at 4?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Philly is in a GREAT spot at 4. I would want Star there as a 5T/NT in their new 3-4, but would CERTAINLY settle for one of the three stud LTs...GREAT spot for Eagles

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Top 3 teams that could draft Geno Smith...

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

1. Buff 2. Philly 3. Clev...Don't feel strong about the last two though...I think he goes to Buff

Paul (Denver)

Do the Bears go with a CB in the first or possible Eifert?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Eifert is possible, but I could also see him going to PGH or NYG...Bears are in a good spot too...can pretty much nab best player available, but I tend to think CB...need three CBs to keep up with GB

Eddy (Spokane)

I know the Seahawks just signed a back up QB, but I like Matt Scott alot out of Arizona. Is there a chance the Hawks end up with him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

I like that fit quite a bit

Jon (CT)

Would Star make sense for the Jets at #9? Then they could look to address the pass rush with the 13th pick if they get it.

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

I really think Star makes sense for ANYONE expect maybe DET, ZONA and BUFF in the Top of the draft

Coy (Lexingtoy, KY)

What about Ogletree as 3-4 OLB like the Steelers use? I know he'd need some teaching but I see MLB as a waste of his athleticism.

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

I think he is best as a WLB in the 4-3, but MLB in that scheme needs to be a big time coverage player now against today's TEs-he fits that, but will need protected by quality DTs in the run game. Could see him being used like Timmons though too

david (Halifax)

Are there any of those top 10 players that you don't think Philly will take? seems you've suggested Star, Geno and any of the 3 tackles

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

I don't think they take Geno. I bet they end up with Star and Manuel with first two picks

Blueman (INDY)

See that Jarvis Jones is dropping like a rock,is this just pre draft smoke or is he really falling that fast?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

I am not buying it...Can't get past Pittsburgh...Can't

Paul (Indy)

First, miss you on the Football Today Podcast. I hope it will be back soon. If you were Ryan Grigson, what would you target for the Colts 1st round pick? Or back trade back to get more picks?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Thank you....as for Indy, they should grab one of the two OGs, but doubt they fall...otherwise, honestly-best D player available-positon doesn't even really matter

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

So what does NEng do for pass catchers? No E-Sanders, and both TEs are battling injuries...bring back Deion Branch and Troy Brown?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Gotta draft one high, but that has not worked well in the past and that complicated passing game is awfully tough on a rookie WR to adjust to. But maybe a guy like Hunter and just keep it simple for him. 9 Routes

Nick (Los Angeles)

Who currently is your pick to win the Super Bowl? I know its early.....

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

A combo of SEA/SF vs. NENG/DEN

Luke (Waterdown, Ontario)

What Dolphins O player besides the Tannchise will benefit most from Mike Wallace's big threat capabilities?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

I see what you did there...fine work...Should def help the running game-will help everyone really...what Wallace brings is very frightening

Dan A. (Rochester, NY)

Matt, I know the Raiders need EVERYthing on Defense, but why not draft whichever OT isn't taken #1? They could have a solid O Line for many years.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

That would be fine...it would

Norman (NY)

Could Sheldon Richardson's age hurt his draft stock (will be 25 by the end of the season)? Also what would be a better scenario for Dallas, draft Richardson in round 1 if he falls and target Larry Warford in round 2 or take one of the two guards in round 1 and best DL or S available in round 2?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

It might be a slight red flag against Richardson, but doubt it allows him to get to Dallas' pick...don't think the Cowboys will have such options

Jeff (NYC)

G-men going with best available?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

They never go LB or OL in Round 1...so I am thinking Eifert or best available DE like Werner

Dan (DC)

He really just said "the Tannchise"? Have Miami fans learned nothing from the Jets?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Not sure what to add to that!

Derek (Minnesota)

Do you believe the Dion Jordan hype? Feels overrated to me...I'd rather have Mingo

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

I prefer Jordan...more ability...more production...more versatilty...that being said, both players strength at the POA is a concern to me

Blueman (INDY)

Do you see a RB going top of the draft anytime soon? the guy would have to AP/Barry Sanders type skills and college game has changed and probably won't see that kinda guy for a while.

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

We saw it just last year!

frank (lebanon)

TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT THE RAVENS

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

They won the Super Bowl last year...they have recovered very well after having their roster pillaged...but they still have big holes at LT, WR and SS...ILB could be useful as well

CT (Erie, PA)

Is Jarvis Jones' speed a legitimate concern?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Not to me...watch his tape...he runs well enough...great player

Otto (CA)

Do you think this is the year Gore starts his decline?

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

No, but with Hunter and James, I think this is the year that his workload is decreased...gotta think big picture (playoffs) if you are SF...save him up

Matt (Houston)

Since Trestman is labeled as a QB guru, and the Bears have no other young talent at the position on the roster, do they spend 1 of their 5 picks on a young QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Either this year or next, yes...CHI doesn't have a ton of needs, so I can buy that

Mike (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

MW, who is the better route running receiver and who will go first DeAndre Hopkins or Robert Woods?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Hopkins on both accounts

Jon (CT)

Do you think we'll ever see prospects where pads at the combine? Does it make too much sense?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

No...they want to see the player move just as he is...effective as it is now

Max (NY)

Agreed about T Rich. People need to watch some of his tape from last year, ridiculous!

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

BIG TIME guy! Just needs to stay healthy and I will say, that does worry me

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Those Bama guys come to the league pretty worn out

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Ever have a chance to meet Pat Summerall?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

No...would have been an honor though...he was fantastic and a big part of my childhood NFL memories

Jeff (Md)

Better choice for Cards at 7- L.Johnson or C.Warmack?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

I am on an island here, but Warmack...OG (and OLB) are honestly bigger needs for Zona than OT. Plus, Arians wants a power downhill running game...Warmack!

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Who do you like out of the 2nd tier Safety guys in this class - Cyprien, Elam, Shamarko, Reid, etc...

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Cyprien is my #2 Safety...I see a great player with very few flaws

Roger (Cambridge)

Will the Patriots used Mallett for trade bait or is he Bradys heir apparent?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

I bet the Browns are very interested, but it would take a lot for me to move a talented young guy that isn't eating up much cap space

Coy (Lexingtoy, KY)

Cyprien 2nd tier? I like him 1B!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Agreed

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Does SF & SEA being in the same division hurt or help each others chances from developing into long term powerhouse teams?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Well, I think much like BALT vs. PGH, they must be always very aware of the others moves and how it directly affects them. My worry is when they inevitably have to pay their QB huge money

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Velvet Underground "Sweet Jane"...good stuff

Coy (Lexingtoy, KY)

You're right about 'zona, Brown will be back. Developed depth and Right side last year. Guard would be a better pick. Heck OLB, they have no outside pass rush

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

I can live with Brown and Massie as my OTs and Potter didn't embarrass himself. The protection overall greatly improved as the season went along-but it was too late. Warmack is a GREAT fit

Coy (Lexingtoy, KY)

Speaking of Arizona, any chance they are moving to a 4-3. Some of their moves lean that way.

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

It does have that feel with those backup DEs they got....Dockett would LOVE it as a 3T...I see more 4-3, yes

Blueman (INDY)

If Star does start to drop and is available at 10 do you see SF packaging some extra picks and moving up for him ? Not a huge need for them but the chance to get a potential Pro Bowl guy has to be slightly enticing?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

He would be Perfect for SF, which is also why I really like Jesse Williams for Niners...but from 31 to get to 11ish is just such a far climb-don't see it

Gary (Silver Springs)

Would there be any takers if the Skins dangled Kirk Cousins for a potential trade or will they keep him as insurance in RG isn' t ready?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Oh there would be takers...they should consider it, but that also depends on RG3's current condition...shame

Craig (Braintree, MA)

Don't the Vikings have to think at least one game changer in round 1 as opposed to need. Could they draft QB, TE, S, or DE?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Vikes need a starting OG, WR and ANYThing on D...should fill two of those in round 1

David (St. Louis)

I just can't shake the feeling that Jeff Fisher will take a DT (S. Williams?) at #22.

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

DL is pretty set, OG and S are massive needs...OLB is big too as is WR...but that man does love his D Linemen!

Justin (Frankfort, KY)

Will the Bills plan their draft around Nassib, or do they take their chances on getting a QB in the 2nd round?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Would be foolish to plan around Nassib...I think that they grab Geno in round 1 and also consider Manuel in a trade up from Round 2 as well as Nassib...believe it not though, Kolb isn't terrible

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Does Burner Turner end up somewhere, or is it a career?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

I think he gets that late call ala Ced Benson when teams are already in camp and a RB or two goes down

Nicole (Cleveland)

Can't wait for the Browns to win the division this year

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Oh my

Craig (Braintree, MA)

How much longer will Allen be productive for the Vikings?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Like I said, Minny needs a little of everything on D...still a great player, but shouldn't turn away from from a young DE

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

BTW, on Tues, I will be hosting a huge chat...all the bloggers are going to have a Mock Draft and I will kinda be the judge-analyze every pick...should be a blast! Will have details on Twitter ASAP @WilliamsonNFL

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Well, I gotta run folks!
