Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks. Sorry for the delay today but I was literally bringing my newborn son home from the hospital. But the Freaks know I dont miss chats, especially on a huge fight weekend with Canelo-Trout as the highlight not to mention FNF tonight, Epix with Cleverly-Krasniqi and Fury-Cunningham on NBC. So check out all the coverage and news stories and the sked and let's get to it.

Dee (Mountain View Ca)

Happy Friday Dan...I saw on an ESPN scroll last night that JM Marquez has committed to fighting Timothy Bradley in September. If this is the case does this leave Paquiao with maybe Bam Bam Rios as I believe Arum wants that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

A Bradley-Marquez fight is NOT done. I repeat not done any reports saying it was were simply wrong. Will the fight happen? Good chance, yes. But to report that it is done is not accurate and crappy reporting. Marquez may be OK to fight Bradley and may have agreed to a deal but Bradley, although I am sure will take the fight, has not deal. Top Rank specifically told me that they have not even talked over any particulars with him or his team yet as of yesterday.

Don (Miami)

Dan do you think Rigondeaux will move up to 126 to chase some bigger names or will he stay at 122?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I would imagine he will stay at 122 for a little bit and defend.

chis (CT)

will nonito donaire move up in weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Yes, Donaire almost certainly will next fight at featherweight.

Adam (DuPage)

Congratulations on the birth of your son! I have a two year old boy of my own, and even though I'm a big boxing, WWE, and UFC fan, my wife and I make sure to never have anything that involves people hitting each other on TV when he's in the room. What's your plan in terms of when and how you're going to start exposing your son to boxing, considering it's central to your professional life?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Thanks. Haven't given it a lot of thought but boxing is a significant part of my life and he will be exposed to it early but I will do my best to explain what he is seeing. That said, I would not even consider bringing him to a fight until he is probably at least 10-12.

Don (Miami)

Dan do you think that the Canelo-Trout winner has a chance to land a big fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the fall?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Yes, but I am skeptical.

David (Bethel, CT)

Dan I know its not finalized but Marquez-Bradley? I mean l like the fight and all but it sure seems like Marquez is doing what he can to not give Pacquiao his rematch! Even if it costs him millions of $$$$. Is this just of a way of making the eventual Pacquiao rematch more lucrative?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Pacquiao side is not so keen on an immediate rematch with Marquez either. I think both sides just think it might better overall to do something different next. I cant argue with that. If they do fight others next, fine. If they did a rematch next also fine.

Dude (have no idea where I am)

How many folks are expected to watch the fight at the Alamo Dome tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

They have expanded capacity and when it's all said and done they are saying the crowd will be about 40,000.

Notorious JTB (Chicago)

Congrats on the baby, Dan. Bigger idiot: Donaire for admitting he didn't study Rigo as well as he should have, or Arum, for not making the Donaire-Mares fight when he had the chance?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Donaire for not studying. Anyone who would take Rigondeaux lightly in any way, shape or form really screwed up.

Jake ((Arl Hts, IL))

Dan,My feeling on tomorrows fight is that the only way Trout wins is by KO, he has no chance of winning a decision in Texas.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I dont agree with that.

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Dan, after you have had time to reflect on the fight, do you still feel it was 114-113 close? I think Harold Lederman nailed the result and I just don't see where Nonito won more than 2, maybe 3 rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I am fine with my scorecard. If anything, I think Harold was way too wide.

Joe M (Dallas)

Congrats on the son Dan. Really really looking forward to Canelo-Trout but I just have a sick feeling in my stomach that Trout is going to get jobbed in some way.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

That is a possibility. It's a shame we have to even think like that but it is what it is.

AW (Bostin)

Dan I'm stuck in my house in Boston because the marathon terrorist is on the loose. Thanks for keeping us entertained with your chats. Do you agree with Trout that his (Trout) punching power is underrated? He didnt seem to be a big puncher against Cotto.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I dont think he is a big puncher but I do think his power is underrated.

Mike (DC)

Does HBO have anything in the works for July? Mikey Garcia?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Garcia likely will be back in July, yes.

Peter (New York)

DTM. Congrats on the new addition. As a father of a 18 month old son let me just tell you to relish every day. It flies by and is the most rewarding thing in the world. That being said if you need the baby to fall asleep maybe you should make it watch the Donaire Rigo fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

LOL. Thanks. He has literally been home for about a half hour and is sitting next to me in his car seat out cold like he was cracked by a Tyson left hook.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Weights from London: Cleverly 174, Krasniqi 173.

Shaun (St. Louis)

I've heard Harold talk about ring generalship a lot. While Rigo was brilliant at times, it definately did his fair share of running. Did you see that as well, because it didn't seem to be recognized by the HBO team?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I thought they called a more one-sided fight than it was and that has a huge impact on the viewers.

Jeremy (Louisa, KY)

Dan were you surprised with Bob Arum's reaction after the fight? He seemed a little disappointed that Rigo won and even admitted he didn't know how to market him or how to promote his fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I dont think Bob was necessarily disappointed that Rigo won the fight. He has both guys. I think he was, like a lot of people, was disappointed in the way Rigo fought.

Mike (NYC)

Dan, congrats on the birth of your son! So did you name him Arturo or Acelino?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

No. His name is Jesse Stephan Rafael. What I was amazed by when I was told that he shares the same birthday, April 15, as Arturo Gatti, my all-time favorite fighter. That just blew me away.

Don (Sunny San Diego)

The Ring Mag loss all credibility when they kept Donaire I there P4P top 10. And Rigo is on the outside looking in. What gives?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I kept Donaire in my top 10 too and didnt include Rigo. I dont get hyped by only one fight. Yes, it's a huge win for Rigo and he belongs in my top 20 (which he is) but it does not erase the massive accomplishments of Donaire that he racked up over an extended period of time. So I am fine with Donaire still being top 10 and Rigo not being in there.

Rick (Corpus Christi,TX)

Dan, who wins Canleo-Trout?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I have picked Trout by decision.

Dr. Rockso (Zazzblammymatazz)

Dan,I usually enjoy the work you do for ESPN, but I thought your criticism of Rigondeaux was completely uncalled for and frankly a bit unprofessional. It wasn't the most exciting fight, but it was never a great matchup stylistically. I think I speak for the majority of fight freaks when I say that it was an impressive performance by Rigo against a much bigger man, and he should be commended for that. Objectivity should be paramount for ESPN articles.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

It was my opinion. If you dont like it I couldnt care less. I am paid to give my opinion.

Josh Breese (Canmore,Alb)

Dan, I have a question in regards to the brand of gloves fighters wear. I know many fighters have deals with certain companies, do the gloves they wear get decidided in the actual contract?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Sometimes they are specified in the contract as for the brand or even the color. The commission determines the weight -- 8 or 10 ounce depending on the division. In some place, the fighters can pick their own brand as long as the commission is OK with it. Some fighters do have deals with specific manufacturers.

Fabian (San Francisco)

How big would a Canelo TKO of Trout make Canelo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

A KO is always good. A win is most important though.

Mike (DC)

Were the Watson Brothers standing behind you and Mrs DTM as you signed the birth certificate?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny.

C.Butler (Los Angeles)

Do the commissions have any "re-hydrate" limits? Or is it only an issue if stipulated in the contract?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Not that I am aware of. But the IBF has a rule that a fighter cant put on more than 10 pounds for the next morning weigh in.

Jason (Atlanta)

Congrats on the newest addition to the family! Just remember, don't pull an Arum and let the dirty diapers "marinate" too long.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Amad (UK )

Congrats on the birth of your son. Random question. Most big fights end up in Vegas because of the casinos. Do Casinos actually pay to hosts the fights and if so how much exactly do they pay?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Sometimes they pay a fee or put a up guarantee. A lot of times they do a big ticket buy for their customers. If they dont pay outright they often give promoters great deals like free rooms and meals for the fighters and their camps, which is a big savings for a promoter. Casinos like to have fights part of their overall entertainment offerings but fights in particular often bring in high rollers. A casino with a big fight will bring in a lot of customers who will spend a weekend gambling and that is what the casino wants most -- a big drop on fight night.

JoJo (NYC)

Dan, who do you think Devon Alexander will face now that Kell Brook is out? Any chance he'd face Ajose?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Nothing definite. Totally fluid but I would say there's no chance Ajose gets that fight.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Dan you honestly think Trout is going to get a fair shake in Texas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Who the hell knows?

Jimmy (London)

Congrats on the baby Dan. I watched the TR international broadcast of the fight (who had it very close), and I had Rigo winning by a wide margin. Do you think the TV announcers make that much of a difference?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Massive difference, which is why a lot of times I watch TV fights with the sound down.

Atrain (Alexandria VA)

If Trout wins who are money making opponents for him other than Money May??

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Canelo has a rematch clause so it could be a big pday for a rematch. A rematch with Cotto would not be out of the question. And then look around at 154. It's a good division. There are also quality 147s who might want to move up.

Jackson (IA)

Sad that all these questions are more about the judging tomorrow than the fight. Trout got a fair shake against Cotto in NYC, I'm still assuming he will in Texas.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Good point. The judges were good for the Cotto fight.

Colin (NJ)

Who do you like in the NBC fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I like Steve Cunningham as a fighter and personally. But it is hard to pick against Fury in this fight given the huge size difference and I also dont think Steve is a very big puncher, especially at heavyweight.

Jay (Orange County )

Dan, whats next for Gary Russell Jr

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

TBA, of course. He is supposed to be back in June or July. Getting over a fractured hard.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Saying you couldn't care less if someone liked your article makes you sound like even more of a jackass. Stop the bleeding~!

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

I really dont care if somebody likes or doesnt like an article I write. It'd be nice I guess if everyone liked it but whatever.

Peter (NYC)

Derrick Findley going to get his chin checked tomorrow against Curtis Stevens?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

One would think.

Tom (ATL)

What kind of PED's testing if any are being used for the Canelo-Trout fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

As far as I know there is no special PED testing.

Juan (Bay Area, Ca)

I know you won't be attending the Canelo/Trout fight. What was the last BIG SIGNIFICANT fight you weren't able to attend? (Canelo/Lopez was not significant)

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I have missed some big overseas fights obviously but as far as big US fight I honestly dont recall. I think maybe De La Hoya vs. Sturm.

Jameson (Ireland)

As a journalist, shouldn't you care about the public's opinion's of your journalism? You write to be read, no? Or is it just a job to you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

People read the stories. That is what counts. If they dont agree with my view, so be it. As long as they read.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

All the best with the new addition, Dan. Hope your wife and baby are doing well. Of all the bouts on the schedule right now, where does Canelo/Trout rank in terms of your most anticipated?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

WAY up there. I am very pumped for the fight. As excited as I am to have my son born and home from the hospital I'll be honest -- I'm disappointed I wont be at the Alamodone this weekend.

Steve (Kansas City)

After talking to Alexander and his team I am under the impression they will fight anyone as long as it fulfills the IBF mandatory.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

That's pretty much the case, but even if it doesnt they just want to fight.

Kimosabe (The Range)

Do you think Soto-Karass can win against Berto? I believe he has a really good chance.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I dont think you count out Soto Karass in a fight that is likely to be a slugfest. If he was facing a very technical fighter, maybe. But not against Berto, who still is the big favorite.

Vin (Little Rock)

Here's my take: most of us(the fans) were so shocked at the upset, we expected of favorite journalists to be tweeting "Unreal! Amazing upset and a dominating performance!", but knowing Rigo better than we did, you weren't THAT shocked by the outcome. So you guys just went straight to "Boring fight", rather than writing about the incredible upset most of us perceived it to be.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I didnt think it was that big of an upset.

Gale Van Hoy (Judgeville, USA)

I like how you pointed to Tim Bradley's card of 114-113 to help justify your own. Did you also score Bradley Pac 116-112 like he did? Seeing as how Timmy is apparently some great judge and all...

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I was not justifying anything. I was telling people how he had it since he came over the ringside media after the fight to talk and we asked him his score. Pretty basic.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Rigo hardly threw a punch in rounds 7 and 8. In 9 and 10 he threw some that barely touched gloves. I gave all 4 of those rounds to Donaire. Had it 6 rounds a piece with knock down giving Donaire 1 point win on my card. Rigo moved great, but didn't do enough most rounds for me. No problem with Rigo winning, but can't see wide score cards.

J.G. Jefferson (North Carolina)

Dan, who would give Mayweather the stiffer test, Trout or Alvarez?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Both are legit fights but both guys present different issues.

Basement (ESPN)

If you don't care about our opinion, maybe we'll just stop reading your articles?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

You wont because if you do you wont know what to rip me about.

Guillermo Rigondeaux (Miami)

I will try to be more exciting next time I thoroughly humiliate a top-5 pound for pound fighter in my 12th fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Thank you.

danny (new york)

Do you come up and write the entire divisional rankings by yourself?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Yes.

Rudy (Bell, CA)

Dan, I'd appreciate a little help from you or the fight freaks here. Can you please tell me at what time the Cunningham-Fury card starts and what channel will it be on Direct TV? Your help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

It's on NBC at 4 pm ET.

Philippe (Montréal)

Do you think Antonin Decarie will get destroyed against Abregu in Argentina?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I dont think destroyed. I think it's a pretty interesting fight. Winner takes a big step forward.

corey (westwick)

Guillermo Rigondeaux reminds me of Joel Casamayor

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

No shock. They are good friends, Joel was there with him in NY as part of the team.

Peter (Ireland)

When writing the Rigo article did you anticipate it would get this much heat?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

No. But I dont ever think about that sort of stuff.

Tom (ATL)

If everyone hates your opinion Dan, why the h3ll are they here reading it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Because they cant get through a day without ripping me.

Luis (Chicago)

Congrats on your baby! I hope u where there during delivery. Did u cry? I ask because when my daughter was born I was told by a few friends that it is the best experience and tears of joy would pour. They were correct! I hope the Love Child congratulates you.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I was present and it was a truly amazing experience.

Adam (DuPage)

I was setting the DVR for next week's Showtime card and I didn't see undercard fights on Sho Extreme in the guide (like there are this weekend). I would thought that of any card, they would have undercard coverage for that one. Is the Daniel Jacobs fight being televised?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

There is no Extreme next week but I believe Jacobs is on the regular Showtime broadcast.

Richie (Bronx)

Dan, alot of the people are on the rag today, is it a full moon?

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

How eager would Cancelo be to invoke that rematch clause if he gets schooled like some suspect?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I suppose it will depend how the fight goes.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Here's my blog on the similarities between Canelo-Trout and Whitaker-Chavez. http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3725/deja-vu-at-the-alamodome

Antonio (Philadelphia)

Dan, is it true that your babys first words were Hardwork Dedication? LOL!! Congrats!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

No, the first words were, "I'd like to thank Al Haymon and God."

Nonito (Bay Area)

I really wish Bob would have let me fight Abner Mares.

Raymond (Toronto)

I am totally underwhelmed by the Mayweather PPV promotion.Do you think Showtime is going to take it on the chin in terms of PPV buys?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

It has been a very disappointing promotion in my opinion. It got off to a bad start with no real hype to kick it off and has not really picked up steam. It doesnt help when the star of the show declines numerous interview requests. It is what it is.

Steve (Boston, MA)

Do you know how many PPV buys Showtime needs not to lose money on Money's deal?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I dont know the exact numbers but the number floating out there is that they guaranteed Floyd $30 million. That means to me on a rough crunch of numbers that it needs to do a bit more than a million buys to break even.

Jesse (Car seat)

Dad, who's this Love Child dude? Is he gonna screw up Christmas?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Jertle (Dallas)

Any talks of bringing any fights back to Cowboy Stadium in the near future?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Nothing going on on that front at this point.

Ace (Sactown)

BTW, I think people are going a little overboard. I dont always agree with you but I can say that about 90% of the time i think you are right on the money. I'm not gonna jump all over you because I disagree with your OPINION.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Exactly.

BBWME (home!)

This is the problem. Rigo won, nobody says he didn't. Rigo's fans are all whining that people say he ran the entire fight. He did run. And he did win. But landing 10.6 punches per round is boring, and we all watched the fight and he was constantly running in a circle along the outside of the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

What he said.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Here's my story on two fighters Top Rank signed this week: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9189366/vic-darchinyan-luis-carlos-abregu-sign-top-rank

Jason (PA)

is there a chance Mayweather is taking Guerrero too lightly?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

For all the grief Floyd takes from a lot of people about a lot of stuff, one thing he cannot be criticized for at this point is taking opponents lightly. Floyd always comes in great shape and I have no reason to think it will be any different this time.

Bill (PA)

Mayweather made a comment about Guerrero having to do jail time for the gun incicent - is it true that the Ghost is going to jail after the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

He faces a max of four years if convicted. But nothing has been decided yet as to what his punishment will be.

Fabian (San Francisco)

What is with Rubuen Guerrero am I the only freak who hates that guy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

He's enjoying his 15 minutes.

Marc (Philadelphia)

Cunningham KO ..Bank it Danno

Luis (Chicago)

I noticed on HBO that the mic has TR as the logo. Do u think HBO is rubbing it in to GBP?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I noticed that also. I think it was something Top Rank demanded. HBO would much prefer to have its logo on the mic.

Steve (Park Slope)

DTM, congrats on becoming a dad. So what fights are on the regular Showtime broadcast along with Canelo-Trout, and what fights are on the Sho Extreme broadcast?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Canelo-Trout and Figueroa-Cotto are on Showtime. Scheduled for Extreme are Jermall Charlo and Julian Williams bouts with Terrell Gausha getting on TV time permitting.

Antonio (Philadelphia)

BTW, I hope Mrs. DTM is recovering well Dan. Was Roger Mayweather in the room telling the Drs that they dont know S#!t about Labor & Delivery? LOL!

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Hilarious.

Dwelle (jackson, Michigan)

rigo is good, but he actually turned and ran a number of times, smart sure pleasing...not at all

Richie (Bronx)

Will HBO broacast 2 fights for Martinez fight from argentina the 27th?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Three fights on the telecast. Arreola-Stiverne heavyweight fight from California opens the show. Then in Argentina it's Abregu vs. Decarie followed by Martinez-Murray.

Matt (New York)

Dan you run from the facts. Rigo used movement while throwing more and landing more than Donaire. How in the world can you say he ran? If anything Donaire should have been throwing more.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

He did run at times. Fact. Donaire should have thrown more but it does not change the fact that Rigo did run at times.

Sal (NY)

Who is your son's favorite fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

He's 5 days old. Doesnt have one yet.

Fletch (Tybee Island, GA)

Ugh. This is the "bunch of cry-baby losers complaining that Dan told the truth about a crappy fight" chat.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Nice to see Rigo has this many fans. You'd never have known since he didnt sell five tickets for the fight against Donaire.

Joe (Frankfurt)

"Run" has such a negative connotation. Perhaps we should use the phrase "effective punch avoidance". Or maybe we could stop overreacting the word run.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

LOL. EPA for short.

Ian (Salt Lake City)

Dan please stop saying that Macklin scored a "clean" knockdown of Martinez. Anybody who saw the knockdown could tell you that Macklin's foot played a bigger part than the punch.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Punch that lands cleanly, opponent goes down = clean knockdown.

Bobby (New Orleans)

"Nice to see Rigo has this many fans. You'd never have known since he didnt sell five tickets for the fight against Donaire."Haha so you just basically admitted that the boxers who sell the most tickets get preferential treatment in your articles? You are a SHILL

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Not true at all. I have written tons of stories that are highly complimentary about fighters who couldnt sell a ticket in their own house.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa Il)

Freak, Please write articles that everybody agrees with. Doesnt that sound fun? LOL.....I mean come on freaks. We are all adults. If you dont like dans opinion, get ovder it. You have one of your own.

LD (Houston, TX)

I hate it when people say Martinez is ducking GGG. But where I do take offense is when Lou Dibella argues and rants that he brings nothing to the table i.e. money or people yet Martinez can fight Barker, Macklin, or Murray. Am I missing something? But I'm fired up about GGG finally stepping to the plate against Macklin!

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

It's not Sergio avoiding GGG. It's Lou not wanting his meal ticket to fight that animal.

Chris (NYC)

Trout sold all of three seats in the Garden and I think Dan was/is more than fair to him...

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Some people have short memories and dont let the facts get in the way of a good conspiracy. Glad you have a good memory.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Dan stop ducking the real important questions. How do Thunder and Popo feel about the new arrival?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

It's been interesting. There has not been a formal introduction yet but they know something is up and were sitting and staring at the car seat with the baby in it on the couch. It was hilarious.

Melville (New England)

The real blame for the disappointment people are expressing here should not be lobbed against either Rafael, nor Rigo. Rigo fought the way he had to to win. Styles make fights. Arum deserves 95% of the criticism for making fight in the first place.

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

HBO wanted the fight more than Arum did.

Lou (Los Angeles)

Rigo is super talented, he won the fight...and he ran a lot and is exceedingly boring. Why are dudes mad at Dan for speaking the truth?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Exactly.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Breaking news from the Bat email: Devon Alexander will fight Lee Purdy on May 18. Purdy was next leading available IBF contender and the fight counts as the mandatory, Richard Schaefer told me. Schaefer said he made a deal with Purdy promoter Eddie Hearn.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Gun to your head do you watch Rigo-Donaire 5 times or 5 old Billy Dib fights?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Use the gun.

Jimmy (London)

Purdy??? I've seen him fight several times and all I can say is Devon is in for an easy night!

JD (DC)

Did your baby weigh in wearing his diaper, or was he in his birthday suit behind a towel?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Birthday suit and no towel!

Aaron (Sactown)

Have you ever called a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Of course. Many for Epix.

Juan (Bay Area, Ca)

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)Gun to your head do you watch Rigo-Donaire 5 times or 5 old Billy Dib fights?Dan Rafael (2:43 PM)Use the gunPost of the YEAR

Fletch (Tybee Island, GA)

Gotta feel for Kell Brook. Just terrible luck for that young kid. Hope to see him back soon.

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

I'm sure he will be fine from his injury but he wont get the shot at Devon as a mandatory.

Ali (Tampa)

Hey, at least the Ghost's dad is trying to sell the program. At least he understands the importance of being interesting on TV

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Totally agree.

Richie (Bronx)

Dan, were you putting vasaline between contractions on your wife's face or just iceing the neck?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

LOL.

clay (chattanooga)

DTM, wow! just joined and was catching...what the hell is the deal with ppl freaking about the Rigo fight? Geez... moving along! what r your instant thoughts on Alexander-Purdy? don't know much about Purdy myself.

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

My instant thought is easy fight for Devon. Easy work.

Rumpoffsteelskin (Bronx, NY)

Djan-O, when your kid was born, did he slip the doc's slap or counter over the top of it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Landed a nice check hook to the nurses chin.

Frank (PHX)

King freak, no more delays on chats please, it was almost as bad as all the delays for Alexander/Brook fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Hey come on -- I am chatting on the day my son came home from the hospital! I could have just canceled it.

Steve (Kansas City)

Any truth behind the rumor going around about Broner getting knocked out cold in sparring?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

I've heard the rumor but do not know if it's for real or not.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Dan, does your son have enough hair to brush?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Yes!

Ace (Sactown)

Man, you just brought your son home lol Tough crowd in here today

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

I'm used to it. I have a great chin. lol

Rudy (Bell, CA)

Dan, While your wife was in labor, was Andre Berto's cornermen in there with you guys screaming at her that she's got to be a soldier?

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Holy crap that is funny.

Adam (DuPage)

What's the latest on Chavez's fight date and opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Likely June 22 with outside shot at June 15. Opponent is not set.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan have you made your Daddy debut diaper changing duty. There no tune ups in this sport!

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

I confess -- I have yet to change a diaper. I'm not ready for that yet.

Frank (PHX)

Lol ya jk, I was actually surprised you were still going on with the chat for this week I just assumed it be cancelled for the week. All of us freaks appreciate your HARDWORK and DEDICATION. Congrats on your new baby boy!

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Thanks.

Andre Berto's Corner (Rafael Hospital Room)

Be an assassin!

GGG (Cali)

that son of yours Jesse, he a good boy, good boy

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

LOL

Robby (Rancho, CA)

Is there a Heavyweight today that could have competed well in the Ali/Frasier era?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

Obviously, the Klitschkos.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

You could have canceled the chat!?!? When would we have danced!?!?

Joe (Frankfurt)

Glen Tapia seems to have stalled a bit, looking rather unimpressive lately.

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

He didnt look great on the Donaire-Rigo undercard but he dominated and won 80-72, I think on all three cards.

Bob (Florida)

Dan, do you put much stock in rumors about guys struggling in sparring? Always seems we get a rumor like that before big fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Usually I dont unless I hear it from a source I trust.

Notorious JTB (Chicago)

DTM is scared his son's diapers are more disgusting than the WBC and more rancid than the WBA.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Come on, NOTHING is as bad as that.

Kevin (Boston)

Dan any truth to the rumor that Gale Van Hoy was at the birth and declared your son to be a daughter?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

This is not true.

Rumpoffsteelskin (Bronx, NY)

Dan-sanity, will your son have automatic freak status? And does he inherit the power to ban chat posters who ask idiotic questions like "why were you late for the chat on the day your son came home?"

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Yes. I still need to teach him the secret handshake though.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

If Canelo loses to Trout, does Cotto-Canelo become a big possibility for the fall?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Yeah, I think so.

Kristian (Wall Street, NY)

What a better venue for a boxing match; Balrcyas Center or Foxwoods?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

Both excellent but different. Barclays is a major arena. The MGM Foxwoods arena is a lot smaller and more intimate.

Will (okc)

Do you think Victor Ortiz is done as a boxer?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

Not at all. He is on a break healing from his jaw injuries and should be back later this year.

the duder (PDX, OR)

Dan, do you watch really old fight tapes? Like stuff from the 30s? Do you have a favorite old fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

I have some old tapes for sure. Not necessarily full fights, but I watch stuff I have on Jack Johnson a lot and some Jack Dempsey.

guano man (PR)

dan considering is rare saturday and you are not covering the fight will you stay at home with the baby and watch cunigham vs fury and then at night canelo vs trout on tv

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

I will watch everything I can live but Mrs. DTM and I have a lot of family coming to town this weekend to meet JTB (Jesse The Boy).

Joydeep (Philippines)

Where do you put rigondeaux in the p4p rankings?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

In my personal list I have him 12th.

Steve (Kansas City)

For those interested the weigh in is about to begin here: http://sports.sho.com/live

javier gorbea (PR)

dan how great is that hbo came to his senses and decided to do the froch vs kessler fight live instead of tape its just a shame Sho did not do the same with khan vs diaz

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

Agreed. I saw Ken Hershman at the Donaire-Rigo fight and made a point to tell him that I and all Fight Freaks appreciated the live coverage of the bout.

Frank (PHX)

I would love to see Ortiz come back to avenge his loss vs Lopez or Maidana winner and rematch with Berto again

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

I agree. I would very much like to see an Ortiz-Maidana rematch at some point. Berto rematch would also be excellent but if I can only have one, give me the Maidana rematch for sure. Lopez rematch would also be fine.

Warren (NZ)

First time my daughters saw me watching boxing they were 4 and 3, the oldest asked me "Dad, why are those men naked?"

Anthony (Houston)

Bill Simmons mentioned Rios - Alvarado in his NBA trade value column yesterday...I think he's appealing for freak cred.

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

He has none until he has me on the BS report. lol.

Juelz (MD)

bold prediction - mayweather/guerrero doesnt crack a million buys

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

Wouldnt shock me.

The Hamburgler (Ogden, Utah)

Did you get a little uneasy when they predictably announced Lawrence Cole as the ref for Canelo - Alvarez?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Doesnt shock me at all.

Bruce (Alexandria)

Speaking of old fights, do you have any recommendations. I would suggest the Floyd Patterson / Ingomar Johanson trilogy and the Archie Moore / Yvan Durelle fights. They used to show them on ESPN classic and they're all worth seeing.

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

Archie Moore-Durelle is one of the great all-time action fights in the history of the world. Just a wild knockdown filled fight.

Peter (NYC)

More Felix Verdejo please

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

Yup.

Matt (San Antone)

Rumor surfacing that Canelo will get arrested after the fight due to a warrant???

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

That is possible, in connection to the supposed street fight with Ulises Solis.

Jean Pascal (Canada)

Why am I not disclosing what agency I am using for drug testing?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

I wish I knew.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Speaking of Victor Ortiz, how dare he challenge the Freaks and I with his primitive dancing skills on Dancing With the Stars. Thus, NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

classicboxfan (nyc metro)

Dan, your impression of Fury: putting on a show or self-delusional?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

Both.

Joe (Canada)

By the way DTM, what's the official weigh-in of the newest freak?

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

Jesse weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces.

Mike (Portland)

Hey Dan, who has better defense, Floy or Rigo?

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

Floyd.

MIKE DIAMOND (NY)

Just admit your a homer, with a crush on Donaire, it killed you to see him lose..Loser

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Honestly, and you can believe it or not and I dont really care, but I do not root for fighters. I like Nonito as a fighter and personally as I have gotten to know him and his wife over the years but I simply had no dog in the hunt and did not care who won or lost the fight. It's that way for virtually every single fight I have ever covered.

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

By the way, Larry Merchant is working the international telecast for Canelo-Trout.

Julio (Dallas TX)

Not that its official or anything, but what is your assessment of Marquez vs Braldley? Aside from the possible low PPV's I think it would sell, I fee it's a bad matchup for Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

It's obviously an interesting fight between two of the best. Personally speaking, I am interested in the fight.

Peter (Maine)

What happen with 50 cent and Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

Lovers squabble.

Stiffy (Wisconsin)

Was Chris John's cut that bad that the fight needed to be stopped?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

Yeah, I watched the fight. It was a vertical cut and pretty bad. Totally legit stoppage.

Michael C (Houston, TX)

A) Congrats on the baby B) See the renewed push to get Jack Johnson a pardon? Looks like that rookie card of yours may be going up in value soon....

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

Thanks. And that would be nice!

Richard (Georgia)

Did George Foreman commentate recently? Or is that coming soon?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

He worked with Larry Merchant and Tim Ryan to call the Macau telecast two weeks ago.

Derek (Brooklyn)

DTM, what's with Alvarado possibly being served up to Pacman, can the guy get an easier hometown fight as a reward, he's been in tough every time out for over a year now

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

Pacquiao-Alvarado is one possibility. Obviously, if that fight was made Alvarado would earn WAY more than a hometown fight. I'm pretty sure Alvarado would rather make a few million to fight Pacquiao than a fraction to fight at home.

Cheese (Baltimore)

How is it possible for you NOT to root for fighters, and love boxing? Your human-- everybody has things they prefer and dislike. Your role as a responsible journalist, however, is to present the story without favor. Which I think you do, more often and not...

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

It is possible. You just learn not too. After a long time of covering fights, you dont root for individual boxers. I root for a great fight, a great promotion, that sort of thing.

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

Weights from San Antonio: Canelo 153.5, Trout 153.25.

Wade (San Diego)

Love your work Dan! You are the most legit boxing reporter on the web and I don't consider anything finalized until I see you report it. With that said, are you going to update your divisional rankings for this week? I look forward to every Tuesday when you do your updates but you still have Donaire #1 at Jr. Featherweight. With Rigo's win and Mares moving up in weight, there will obviously be some movement there. Also, with Chris John's TD this past weekend, any chance Mikey Garcia moves to the #1 spot at Featherweight? Congrats on the baby. I am having one myself in Nov. Keep up the good work Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

Thanks. No, they are not being updated this week or next because of the birth of my son. I was at the hospital all day Monday and Tuesday this week and have family coming in the next few days.

Brock (Miami)

What would you consider to be Donaires career defining win?

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

At this point the Montiel fight.

Jerry (Seattle)

Would you have been so critical of Rigondeaux is he was not an African-American?

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

Are you that dumb? He is not African-American. He is Cuban.

Austin Trout (Texas)

I look huge! Canelo is in trouble!

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

LOL

Nick (DE)

LOL @ Jerry (Seattle) Rigondeaux is as "African-American" as Mikkel Kessler

tyson (toronto)

is figueroa cotto fight going to be televised?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

Yes, it opens the Showtime broadcast.

Mark (NYC)

I'm looking forward to that day when there are no complaints in the boxing chat. However, I am pretty sure that will only happen on the day of the Rapture.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, your buddy Kevin Iole just tweeted that the 2nd episode of All Access dropped in half in viewership. I'm not surprised as the first one was BORING! Doesn't look good for fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

If that is correct, that does not bode well at all.

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

Thanks for chatting today Freaks! Hope you all have a great fight viewing weekend and enjoy Canelo-Trout and the other bouts. Check out all of our coverage please. Have a great weekend and talk to you next week. Peace.
