Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (2:02 PM)

Greetings, everyone. Glad to be here for another Friday chat. We have a ton of questions already, so let's get going.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich,Just saw the presser and as always like you said one big smokescreen. I do beleive they will drafta QB on the first day. Either trade down after they get the 13th pick for Revis and take either Maunel or Nassib plus get an extra 3rd pick. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:05 PM)

They won't take a QB at 9. If they get 9 and 13, maybe there's a small chance. If they can trade down from 13, there's a better chance. Hearing they like Nassib a lot. Manuel is telling everyone the Jets have expressed strong interest, but you never know with that stuff.

Jack (Denton, TX)

Hi Rich, I know that you're on record saying that the new GM is playing the Revis trade just right, but I wonder about that. It seems that the Bucs are the only suitors, and if the price stays high and they don't trade for him, then aren't the Jets in a bad state? They can't franchise Revis at the end of 2013, so they either have to meet his salary demands (because someone will), or they lose him for a compensation pick. It seems to me that although the Bucs really want Revis they have less urgency to trade for him than the Jets do to trade him.

Rich Cimini
  (2:06 PM)

That's a matter of perspective, Jack. The Bucs have a gaping hole in the defense at CB and they will take a huge PR hit if they don't pull this off. They have a lot to lose, too.

Angelo (Philadelphia, PA)

Great job as always, Rich. What is your sense of Rex's role in the draft under Idzik as compared to Tannenbaum? I had gotten the sense that Rex isn't adamant on having complete control over personnel, "buying the groceries" as one coach famously put it. But it seems as if he may have even less say under Idzik given Idzik's approach to team building and the fact that Rex is a lame duck this year. What are your thoughts on Rex's role?

Rich Cimini
  (2:08 PM)

Very good question, Angelo. Rex will have input, but it won't be the same as with Mike T, who really listened to Rex -- maybe too much. Idzik's hardest job in this process will be deciding who to listen to. Remember, these are holdover scouts, personnel people, etc. These aren't "his" guys.

Rich (New Jersey)

Hi, The Jets first four games, Tampa Bay, New England, Buffalo and Tennessee, how do you see them starting off the season?

Rich Cimini
  (2:09 PM)

I had them at 2-2.

Gary (York, Pa)

Good Afternoon, I believe safe is the beat approach and I don't think any of the DE/OLB are safe. I'l take the guards, Austin or Vaccaro. Your thoughtd

Rich Cimini
  (2:10 PM)

It won't be Vaccaro at 9. That's a reach. Cooper and Warmack are pretty safe bets. Personally, I like Austin, but it would take some onions to pick a 5-8 WR at 9.

Bryan (CT)

Rich, that schedule looks brutal....seriously, under/over 5 wins?!

Rich Cimini
  (2:11 PM)

I picked 6-10. Call me an optimist (for a change, lol)

Todd (CT)

Does the resigning of Pace indicate the Jets aren't in love with any of the pass rushers at 9? If that's the case is Tavon Austin going to be the pick?

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

Pace gives them some depth and flexibility. If they can't find a starting OLB in the draft, at least they have Pace and Barnes. In an ideal world, they'd like to make Barnes a situational rusher. Don't think it'll be Austin. I'd say 10-20% chance.

Mike (Brooklyn)

did Idzik wait too long to pull the trigger on this trade? Bucs said the deadline was a week before the draft

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

Believe me, it ain't over until it's over. If the Bucs make a pick at 13, then you'll know for sure it's over.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Hottest & the Coldest MLB Game that you have been To?

Rich Cimini
  (2:15 PM)

You mean baseball or football? Can't answer on baseball, but coldest NFL game ... a couple -- Pats-Titans playoff game in Foxboro, Jets-Bills in Buffalo in the early 90s (think it was the Cary Blanchard game).

Young Jords (New York, NY)

Assuming the Jets get the Bucs 13th overall pick, don't you think it would be a great day 1 if the Jets could land de/olb Ezekiel Ansah (9) and wr Tavon Austin (13). The Jets would come out with a difference maker on each side of the ball... Something the Jets soarly lacked last year.Mingo worries me. He sounds a lot like Maybin except less production in college. Too small to play in the 3-4.

Rich Cimini
  (2:17 PM)

Austin at 13 would be fine. I have some questions about Ansah. Where would he play? He can't play OLB; he barely knows the game, so you can't ask him to play LB. Too much responsibility. He could fit at DE if you switch to a 4-3 -- Coples and Ansah at DE, Wilkerson slides inside to DT. You're right, some questions about Mingo -- size, production. I watched some tape on him. Wasn't blown away.

MB (NYC)

Strong work as always Rich - Lets assume Revis deal happens and the Jets also end up with #13 - with Milliner and Dion Jordan likely off the board already do you see them doing something along the lines of Cooper or Warmack @ 9 and then either Mingo or Jarvis Jones @ 13 - or maybe Tavon Austin or Corradele Patterson @ 13 and best available RB (Jonathan Franklin?) or Def player (Tank Carradine?) in 2nd round.

Rich Cimini
  (2:19 PM)

Sounds good to me. Small chance Milliner could slip to 9. If you come out of the first round with Cooper and Austin, you're doing ok.

John (Brookline (via Boston College))

Hey Rich, thanks for the chat today - locked up in my apt. Appreciate the time passer...as for the Jets, what're the Jets opinions on Jarvis Jones? I get the health concern, but he reminds me a lot of Suggs (doesn't test well in shorts, but tremendous in pads)...obviously not at 9 but maybe trade down to mid-teens and pick up a 3rd round pick along the way?

Rich Cimini
  (2:21 PM)

Thinking of you guys in Boston. It has to be surreal. I can buy the Jones/Suggs comparison, except for 1 thing: Jones has the medical issue. That concerns me more than the speed. Could be a thought at 13, not 9.

Brad (Birmingham)

So far Idzik has looked for FA bargains due to injuries. Do you think he could take the same approach in the draft? If Lattimore recovers as well as McGahee did after a year off, why not build for the future and take him in the 2nd or 3rd?

Rich Cimini
  (2:24 PM)

Interesting question, but no. There are fixed salaries in the draft, so you'd better maximize every pick. In free agency, the costs fluctuate. More often than not, you get what you pay for. If Lattimore passes the physical, he'll be on the draft board. If not, they won't draft him.

John (Long Island)

Hello Rich - I have read that the Vikings want to trade up to take a wr - would the jets consider trading down from 9 for the vikes two lower 1st round picks? Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (2:25 PM)

I think Idzik would love to get out of 9. If he got 2 first rounders for moving down that far, I'd think he'd be enticed.

westcoastjetfan (los angeles)

Do you think there's a silent second team interested in Revis? Kind of like when Philly came out of no where and signed Nmandi a few years ago?

Rich Cimini
  (2:26 PM)

No. I think it's Jets or Bucs.

Tanner (Chapel Hill NC)

Do you think there's a chance that Revis signs a long term deal with the Jets?

Rich Cimini
  (2:26 PM)

No chance of that happening before the draft. If they keep him through the summer, see him healthy, then maybe .. but not a strong maybe.

Darsh (University Park/ New Haven)

Good day, Rich. Gotta love the warmer weather nowadays. Which of these do you feel is more of a priority in the FO's mind? WR or TE? The whole receiver group looks like a total wildcard right now and it'd probably be a good idea to find an eventual heir to Holmes in round 2 or 3 (I like DeAndre Hopkins and Robert Woods, Personally), but we barely have 1 starting-caliber tight end on the roster (depending on what one thinks of cumberland). I'd be ecstatic with Zach Ertz. Do you see a scenario where both positions are addressed in the first 3 rounds?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

TE is a huge need. Wouldn't be shocked if they took Eifert if they traded down into the 20s. WR also a need for the reasons you mentioned. I like Woods. Heard good things about Hopkins, but this hotel-room episode raises some concern.

Bob (NYC)

Rich, Isnt it getting too close to the draft for the Revis trade ? Are you still sure he will get traded ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:29 PM)

Close? We still have 6 days, an eternity in the NFL.

Mike (Wplains)

Glad to see Sanchez call out the jets for the Tebow circus. Also knw the Holmes contract does not rquire his presence but it is telling that they put the screws to Revis while Captain Holmes skids the workouts. J-E-T-S

Rich Cimini
  (2:34 PM)

Holmes has no workout bonus and he's probably pissed because he had to take a $3.5 M pay cut. I'm sure the JEts aren't thrilled he's rehabbing elsewhere. As Idzik said, the team wants to be intimately involved in a player's rehab. But they know Holmes is a diva and they don't want to inflame the matter by making a stink.

Rob (Syracuse)

Who do you think the Jets are targeting at 9th overall. There hasn't been much said on them targeting any top prospect specifically, at least not that I have heard.

Rich Cimini
  (2:34 PM)

Here's what I'm hearing: Cooper, Mingo, Milliner (if he slips).

Mugatoo (Nevaland)

Rich, lets say the jets aquire the 13th pick . What do u think if they went tavon austin with the 9th pick and cordarrelle patterson with the 13th pick? That will sure help the explosivenees department!

Rich Cimini
  (2:35 PM)

You're giving up on Stephen Hill already?

Mike (PR)

nice article about KOB, Brady was equally stauesque but Pats keep him upright. Toobad Jets never gave KOB a decent line, the man could throw the ball

Rich Cimini
  (2:36 PM)

You're right, Kenny could spin it. Surrounding cast started to deteriorate, and Kenny got beat up physically. A shame.

gareth (pentagon)

Do the Jets really think they can get anything for Tim Tebow in a trade?

Rich Cimini
  (2:36 PM)

Maybe a conditional pick ... in 2020.

Greg (Phoenix)

Rich, since draft is next week, I'll try some predictions:1. Revis is traded to TB for 2013 1, 2013 5 and conditional 2014.2. Idzik looks to trade out of picks 9 and/or 13 to stockpile picks in rounds 2-4.3. Jets trade two 5 th round picks to NO for RB C. Ivory4. Round 1 picks- Sylvester Williams DT UNC and EJ Manuel QB FSU

Rich Cimini
  (2:38 PM)

Two 5th rounders for Ivory? Hmm. Don't see Williams. Manuel, maybe. The Revis trade could be right on.

Francis (Cortland)

Any chance they resign E. Smith after the draft ? Still need safeties that know Rex's system.

Rich Cimini
  (2:39 PM)

I wouldn't rule it out.

Matt (Brooklyn, NY)

Hey Rich,With the announcement of the NFL schedule, the league seemed in a split second to send this trade talk regarding Revis into overdrive! Now knowing that we are going to play in the "Revis Bowl" in week 1, how do you feel this information is going to affect trade talks? [1] Will this possibly force Idzik to speed up the process and get something done within the weekend? or [2] Could this actually make Idzik take a step back and truly re-evaluate the entire situation? I have a feeling the NY media is going to be attached to Idzik's hip if Revis is still a Jet going into Monday!!!

Rich Cimini
  (2:40 PM)

They knew they'd have to play TB at some point at home. Opening day makes the situation more uncomfortable, but not enough to scrap the trade.

Derek (The Great White North)

What do you think about Justin Pugh with the 39th pick in the draft. He could fill the Guard need right away and he has the versatility to play any position on the line. He is ideally sized for a guard in the west coast offense.

Rich Cimini
  (2:40 PM)

He'd be a solid value at 39. Only knock on him is short arms. Lot of versatility, very smart kid.

Kristie (Nanuet)

Agree with Maycock, Jets should keep Revis. he probably has 4-5 prime years left and CB is not a high stress postion (D. green played until he was 40) but J-E-T-S have decided long ago that they don't want him anymore.pc nice article about KOB a class act and a guy who could make all th ethrows.

Rich Cimini
  (2:41 PM)

I agree with Mayock as well, but you can't pay $16 M a year for a CB. It's just not prudent.

D (NNJ)

Do you think if Dion Jordan falls to 9, the Jets will take him?

Rich Cimini
  (2:42 PM)

Yes, but I think he'll go anywhere from 2 to 7.

kman (NYC)

Rich,What are you hearing about Holmes? Is a full recovery this year possible with that type of injury? It seems like he's done with the Jets after this year and the good news is he will be playing for a contract. Maybe he shuts up and plays this year.

Rich Cimini
  (2:43 PM)

He'll be very limited in camp. Everything is geared toward getting him ready for opening day. It will affect him, no doubt.

Nathan (New Jersey)

Rich,Mark Dominik has a press conference scheduled for Monday I believe. Do you think at that point he will be able to finally answer questions regarding Revis [trade completed] or will he still be dodging questions with no trade answer in sight?

Rich Cimini
  (2:44 PM)

You're probably referring to the Bucs' pre-draft press conference. Every team has one. The Revis talks still could be ongoing at that point.

Brian (Tampa, FL)

Rich,Just 6 days till basically the draft trade deadline, i'm going out of my mind! Have any encouraging words for me besides "Keep Calm"?

Rich Cimini
  (2:45 PM)

I still think Revis will be traded to the Bucs. Not sure if that'll calm your nerves or not. I tried.

Kyle (NJ)

Rich, realistically, what are the top 5 options or selections the jets will likely make at the 9 spot in the draft. You could include trading down this pick if that is a likely option in your opinion. Very interested in hearing your feedback as draft is less than a week away...

Rich Cimini
  (2:47 PM)

Kyle, I'm told Idzik really wants to trade down. Thing is, who wants to move up to 9? It takes two to dance. If one of the OTs drops to 9 (unlikely), it would create some interest in the pick. Otherwise, what?

Raaj (Jersey City)

Even last year, I wanted the Jets to sign D. Garrard and have a QB competition. I am happy that Idzik signed Garrard this year. I see a good chance of Garrard starting for the Jets. But you think the Jets draft a QB in the second or third round, someone like Zac Dysert?

Rich Cimini
  (2:48 PM)

They had Dysert in for a visit and I hear he'd be a good fit in a West Coast offense. He's probably a fourth rounder.

Jon (Halifax)

Odds the Jets draft a QB in round two?

Rich Cimini
  (2:49 PM)

Possible, not great. They like Nassib, but he won't get to 39. Neither will Manuel.

Chris (The Big Apple)

Rich, it seems like J.I. is trying to quiet the circus around this team. Your thoughts on how hes handled the team and media so far?

Rich Cimini
  (2:50 PM)

Zzzzzz ... oh, I'm sorry, I was just listening to the Idzik press conference. Does that answer your question?

Scott (NYC)

Hey Rich, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. What is the status on Brandon Moore? Do you think the Jets might look to bring him back like they did Calvin Pace? Would def help with the OL depth.

Rich Cimini
  (2:50 PM)

I think they should bring him back, but I don't see that happening. I'm not sure he wants to come back.

Ryan (ct)

I think the Jets should give Sanchez a shot to play the entire year this year to see if he can bounce back because I dont believe this QBs in this years draft are any good. Id rather draft a QB in next years draft. I dont even want to waste a mid round pick on a QB this year Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:51 PM)

Your scenario could very well play out.

Jon (Halifax)

The jets brought Corradelle Patterson in for a visit. They can't seriously be considering taking him over Tavon Austin can they?

Rich Cimini
  (2:51 PM)

I wouldn't, but they might. Don't see it at 9, though. Maybe 13.

Lou (New York)

Life long Jets fan since days of Matt Robinson. Only Question I have for you and your peers, Why is everything you people write so negative. Everything. If you guys knew so much, why arent you a coach or GM. And what is up with unamed sources. If a person is afraid to give their name, then they dont deserve to be quoted or taken serious.

Rich Cimini
  (2:54 PM)

Fair questions, Lou. If the coverage of the Jets is negative, it's because the team hasn't won a championship in 40+ years. Champions tend to get the benefit of the doubt. Unnamed sources are useful, and sometimes necessary, when reporting actual hard news. I'd never use unnammed sources to trash a player or a coach, but I'd use them to (for example) report a Revis trade.

Lee (NYC)

Hey Rich, Love your work. If the Jets do trade Revis, any chance they would draft 2/ 3-4 Lbs, say Jordan and Mingo, if they are both on the board?

Rich Cimini
  (2:55 PM)

That would bring back memories of Ellis and Abraham in 2000, even though Ellis wasn't a LB. Highly unlikely both would be available to the Jets.

westcoastjetfan (los angeles)

Rich, don't you think it's kind of strange for Rex to be commenting on the Ravens opener? He's got so many issues with this roster, why would he be concerning himself with another team

Rich Cimini
  (2:56 PM)

Maybe he's looking for a nice ovation from the crowd when the Jets play there in November.

Alan (New Jersey)

Rich,Just read your prognostications for the 2013 season and it doesn't look very promising for the team or Rex's future. If Revis is traded, wouldn't the team be better off getting another first rounder in 2014 to use as a possible chip to to move up if needed to take one of the QBs coming out next year?

Rich Cimini
  (2:57 PM)

I'd want this year's first rounder because of the certainty. What if the Bucs make the playoffs in '13? All of a suddenm your first rounder is in the 20s.

R (in CT)

Hey Rick -- thanks for taking the time. Although it appears as though Idzik is pretty methodical in his approach, do you think Woody will have the patience to wait for him to build a winner?

Rich Cimini
  (2:57 PM)

good question, R. Wish I had the answer.

Steve (SoCal)

Love your work Rich. You keep us out of town Jets fans current. Regarding Revis, wait because you TB may offer more, or some other team gets involved?

Rich Cimini
  (2:58 PM)

Thanks, Steve. Bingo, you're on it.

Jeff (NY, NY)

If the Jets don't trade Revis then they need to re-sign him provided he looks healthy at the start of the season - Agree?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

Agree. It would be an absolute debacle if they let him walk away and they get nothing.

SouthOJet (Riverside, CA)

Do you honestly believe the Jets can play Sanchez before the home crowd again?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

Why? Isn't he beloved by the fans?

Aaron (Syracuse, NY)

Rich, your prediction on the day the revis trade goes down is...?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

Wednesday.

John (Hillsdale NJ)

Do you get the feel that Slauson wanted out?

Rich Cimini
  (3:00 PM)

No, I just think he wanted the most money.

Anthony (Lyndhurst, NJ)

With the 9th pick can the Jets surprise everyone and take OLB Alec Ogletree?

Rich Cimini
  (3:01 PM)

That would be a surprise all right. Doesn't project as a 3-4 OLB.

Rich Cimini
  (3:01 PM)

That would be a surprise all right. Doesn't project as a 3-4 OLB.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Is there any correlation between the Revis trade and Ivory trade such as they need the additional 3rd or 5th rounder from Tampa in order to feel comfortable giving up a pick to NO?

Rich Cimini
  (3:02 PM)

No, the Jets already have a 5th rounder.

Rich Cimini
  (3:03 PM)

I'm outta time, folks. This is a busy time of year and I appreciate all the questions. I hope we have another chat before the draft or in the middle of draft days. I'll have to check with the boss man. Have a great weekend and be safe. Rich
