Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! What a week last week. 14 year old gets a slow play penalty, Tiger hit's the flagstick heard round the world, and Adam Scott breaks the glass major ceiling. This is gonna get GOOD I can tell already.... BRING IT!!!!!

Mellow Man (Hindsight, USA)

Kendra Graham, former USGA rules official, wrote that the Tiger penalty had nothing to do with Decision 33-7/4.5, which says a player is not protected from being DQ'd due to ignorance of the rules. The Rules Committee decision looks to be correct under her analysis. There was a lot of inaccurate reporting around the decision, similar to what we see in cable news with breaking stories.

15th hole flagstick (Augusta)

Wasn't I just cruel a week ago?

Sun Shine is mad (Hot, Humid, S. Florida)

Unbelievably disappointed w/your attitude towards TW. ASAP, you called him out, DQ. Never considered 33-7. Faldo's vitriol, Nantz's outright venom towards Tiger and Ridley was disgusting. For you to turn on someone with the best professional reputation and record next to 18v14, turned me off to you altogether. PS: You'll never have another pro who breaks the color barrier again be the best ever. Shame on you. You lost a great follower. Perhaps we can hear from Shoshana, and possibly the voice of sanity. You are done, cooked, fried, and not de-boned. What a shame. S. Williams, also. Your opinion is just as bad as Reilly's rant over the Nike commercial. That's how much it hurts to see you stay w/the pack!

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

So let me get this straight... you ok with the fact that I defended the Nike commercial and ripped Reilly. And when EXACTLY did I call Tiger out? Because I don't remember making any public comments until after the committee decided that the 2 stroke penalty would be given. Part of being a well rounded person is to have the ability to not follow blindly. I feel like I'm not just a round person, but pretty well rounded as well.

Joel (Niagara Falls) [via mobile]

Hello Mr. Collins, Six or eight yerars ago, Tiger, Phil, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen were considered to be the "Big Five" of golf. Today, what golfers would you say are worthy of a moniker like that ? Are there even that many golfers who have earned a designation like that considering all of the different majors winners over the last, say, six years ? Thank you, Joel

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

Tiger and Phil still have to be there but who now other than maybe Rory (because of his two majors and his age) would be considered a threat week in and week out?

Scott (SC)

Do you think everyone else (except Tiger and Phil) would have been DQ'd for the drop?? I do. TV ratings rule everything.

seak (lockdown)

Curious if you position has changed given opinions from rules experts and the prior decisions in the Fitzenwald and Janzen cases

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

Maybe softened I'd say. When Ridley decided no rule had been broken before Tiger was even off the course he put the Masters and Tiger in a no win situation. It's the best they could do with the mistakes that were made. And I don't fault Tiger for not WD'ing.

Tom (LA)

MC, I think that this chat absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part... and we're just the guys to do it.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

What does futile mean? HAHAHAHA

birth.golf.death. (endicott, ny)

what's deeper: your mind or player's divots?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

divots, no question

Dan (CA)

Michael, how does the Augusta Media lottery work? Are the TV guys (Tirico, Nantz, SVP, ect.) involved? How many people get picked to play?

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

If you win you can't try again for 7 years. I don't think it's open to tv media the same way. If you win it's the full treatment with your own locker in the locker room and everything!! Still burns me that I didn't win

Jeff (Chicago)

MC, great coverage from you at the Masters! Thank you! Will we ever see a time when players do NOT keep their own score? And instead allow technology to take the place of signing score cards?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Thank you, And never. Electronics can fail, how hard is it to get a new pencil?

Jeff (RAINY GA...again)

Hope you enjoyed the Masters. I was sitting on 18 green soaking wet but it was worth it. What makes Bill Haas so good? Seems he is always near the top of the leaderboard. Thanks.

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

He's just a very solid player, does everything well so he's very consistent and that's why he's always on the leader board

Dave (Augusta, GA.)

Do you think Adam Scott starts winning a lot of majors now that the majors monkey is off his back?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

define a lot. I think he can win at least three more. would four be considered a lot? But he has to do it before 2016! Anchor rule

seak (lockdown)

Can we end the scorecard - DQ rule?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

I really believe that's why so many people were so angry at the people who were saying Tiger should be DQ'd or WD. The punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime.

@DwnTwnDelFuego (Twitter)

Do you think we'll ever see players in shorts on the PGA? What is the biggest obstacle?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

Not for a long time. It's a traditional look that the tour doesn't want to get away from. And after seeing a couple of these guys legs in shorts... I don't have a problem with it although I would like to see at least one event with shorts just to see the reactions from players and fans

Josh (Orlando)

@DwnTwnDelFuego Tim Herron

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

AAAAAHHHHH MY EYES!!! LOL

Tom (LA)

OK Mike, Powerball or win the Media Masters lottery? Before you answer, remember, you can't buy your way into Augusta!

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Powerball. If it's a choice between my family's well being for life and golf, I'd give up my dream in a heartbeat with no regrets.

Jeff (Chicago)

Sony Open...require every player and caddy to wear shorts and Hawaiian shirts...everyone wins!

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

That'd be awesome... except for the shirts

Tom (Verona, WI)

Merion uses wicker baskets to top flagsticks. Will the winning player's caddie claim the basket from the last hole at the US Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

Irony... the give the winning PLAYER a basket. They better give the basket from the 18th to the caddie. If not there's gonna be a whole flagstick hanging out a car window sunday night speeding away from Merion!

seak (lockdown)

Given that in the last 35 years only 3 guys have won more than 4 (Tiger, Seve, Faldo), yeah that's a lot. Ernie and Phil have won 4 a piece, and both have won a ton of other events.

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

It is but Adam Scott has the exact personality to win that many also. Oh, and he has some game too.

@DwnTwnDelFuego (Twitter)

What's in your bag (manufacturer/clubwise smart guy)? You sponsored? Availble for sponsorship? Make your pitch.

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

I have a Frankenstein bag. TaylorMade R11 driver, Adams 3 wood, 5 wood, and hybrid. Nike Pro Forged combo 4-PW irons. Titleist Vokey Wedges 54, 60 Scotty Cameron Putter. Pro V1 balls. But I'll try anything and everything and the bag is always morphing.

DB (Panama)

MC more impressive amateur performance, Guan at the Masters or Beau at the US Open last year? Who will have the better career?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

Great question. I'd have to say Guan because he went 72 holes without a 3 putt! And bogey was the worst score on his card. BUT, i'd say Beau has the potential to be very successful because he is so much longer off the tee.

Jeff (Chicago)

Do you see any scenario where long putters are banned at the US Open and the British Open but allowed at Augusta and the PGA Championship?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

No. If they ban them, everyone will get in line but the PGA Tour will back it's players when the lawsuits are filed.

Dave (Augusta, GA.)

Enough about the Tiger penalty. He wouldn't have won either way.

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

True dat!

Josh (Orlando)

When you said "Golf lost its honor" Saturday morning, what, specifically, did you mean by that?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

I was so disappointed that a decision was made without speaking to the guy who was involved (Ridley before Tiger was done playing) that when I saw all the arguing between people about integrity and honor of the game I thought. That's all gone now. I was hurting because the game I love and the tournament that stand alone made such a big mistake.

Andrew (SLC)

so i'm curious, have you gotten a chance to talk to your boy Bubba about his feelings on getting beaten by an 8th grader last week??! :) kids these days...it's amazing

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

he just tweeted a picture of some new game being put in his game room, maybe he'll invite the kid over?! They'll get to go toe to toe again at the Zurich, I REALLY hope they get paired together. Bubba will hit it 100 yards by him off the tee

Tom (Verona, WI)

Great coverage by your team at the Masters--hope you are not having nightmares about stuffed bears! We saw again that Tiger really moves the dial. Amazing that he has done this for so long.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

Those bears really freaked me out but the dolls in the closet scared me. Tiger is SO polarizing. That's why I'm in a no win situation with him. If you say he does something wrong you're a racist and a hater, and if you say he does something great you're a just a lover and supporter.

seak (lockdown)

Interesting to see Uhlein on top of the board in Spain, their was a lot of talk when he initially went over to Europe that this might be the waive of the future. Since then though, Cantlay, Speith etc have all gone the sponsor exemption/NTW route. Seems like that route still gets you to PGA Tour faster if you're good enough

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

And 33 of the top 34 in the world are members of the PGA Tour. For some though it's good to go there and get confidence before trying to get here.

Keith H (Seattle)

Any word from Shoshana in Boston? Just to let her know we're thinking of her.

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

I have a feeling she's watching right now. And I'm sure she appreciates all our good vibes we're sending her way.

Dan (CA)

I don't see Rory winning any tournaments in 2013. Priorities seem to be favoring personal live (jetting around, famous g friend) than practicing.

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

I wouldn't go that far. But I think he has got to fill up his schedule and play a bunch more tournaments. If he was planing on twenty he needs to add at LEAST 5 more.

Bob (Seattle)

If you paired Bubba with Guan, get ready for some fireworks... the Sabbatini/Crane kind. Remember, Bubba went off on the slow play at the Grand Slam of Golf. Just imagine him having to wait 3 minutes for Guan to play a shot.

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

even MORE of a reason to put them together!

Sun Shine still mad (Hot, Humid S. Florida)

Nothing wrong with being a supporter. They call you a lover, tell them to be "gentlenmen" and choose another sport. Over 3.5 years and nobody tells the haters to get lost!!!!!!!!! Pick a side and stay with it.

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Because as part of the media, it's my job to see all sides and report them. And even though these guys are my friends, if I didn't call them out when they made mistakes neither you or they would respect me. I'm not here just to blow sunshine and rainbows at everyone. Just tell the truth even when it's not pretty.

seak (lockdown)

I feel for Guan getting a slow play penalty, but apparently he got warned over over his routine at an Open qualifier. And in his Zurich press-conference (!) he said he thought his routine was good. Yikes! Come on kid, time to learn to pick it up

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

heard thru the grapevine he was warned a few times over the weekend at Augusta also. Kid really needs to learn etiquette of pace on tour. Maybe an afternoon with Sabatini would help! haha

@DwnTwnDelFuego (Twitter)

You're not here just to blow sunshine and rainbows at everyone? Shame. I'm out. Good day Sir!

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

haha!

Kevin (Louisiana)

Dufner's play has cooled and alhtough it hasn't been advertised there has been times when he has showed uncharacterisitic temper issues (ie kicking putter).... do you think he was a flash in the pan or can he get back to contending?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Duf is definitely not a flash in the pan, all golfers go thru down stretches, it's just how long do they last. I expect a win from Jason later this year.

Not-A-Rules-Official (Indianapolis)

Am I the only one tired of people calling in for rules judgements? I think it's absurd and makes the game of golf look silly. Tiger should have worn a shirt that said "Snitches get Stitches" on Saturday

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Other than the shirt, I agree. No one should be allowed to call in. If a mistake gets made, so be it. Doesn't hurt NFL. Maybe college basketball, but it would be good for golf if people could not call in.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Besides Guan Tianlang were any players put on the clock during the Masters? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

not to my knowledge but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Unless it's a lead group, it's not reported when a player gets put on the clock

Sun Shine still mad (Hot, Humid S. Florida)

Understood, OK, truce for now (meekly), as I still value your opinion and know you must be impartial. BUT if not for the head trip done to Tiger, he COULD have won. Not "true dat" (he never would have been in contention after his being villified all day) He knew what the announcers would be saying.

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

I applaud and appreciate you being able to get there. I will say (and there's video evidence on ESPN2's First Take) I said Tiger would not win. His weekends just are not good enough yet. He needs to play better in majors on the weekend. BUT I also said he would win the US Open this year. Count on it!!

John (Denver)

So, WHY can people call in. Seriously...Is there a rule that says they have to take a call from somebody a thousand miles away on the couch in their mama's basement?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

No, but if I know a rules officials number and see something on tv, I can text him and say, " No penalty for ____ on the 3rd hole?" Guess what he's gonna go do?

seak (lockdown)

The irony is that Tiger was "saved" by the call-in. I still think we should just go to open scorecards, though. Also think if it's not Tiger (or ANGC) nobody gets nearly as worked up over this.

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

I said that in Quiet Please... if it was Scott Piercy who was in the group it would NOT have cause even a 10th of the stir.

Josh (Orlando)

If Adam Scott wins 1 more major, he's done well - borderline HOF. If he wins 2 more he's in HOF no question. If he wins 4 total he's a top 20-25 all-timer. I think it's a longshot for 4 majors.

Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)

One of my favorite young guys on the tour is Luke Guthrie. Thoughts on him and his potential?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

4 cuts in 7 starts not bad with one top ten. He's got a huge upside but needs to hit more greens in regulation (65.7%) abd get that Strokes Gained Putting average up (ranked 165)

John (Denver)

So then, if you saw a violation while cover an event that was spotted by another player or official, what would you do?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

If I was at the event, I'd say something because I could talk to the official and go show him what and where. If I was at home, I'm not picking up the phone. Too many different camera angles and stuff that I don't see. Plus, I don't wanna be "that" guy

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

told y'all it go too fast!!! Let's do it again Monday. Same time, same place ok?!Have a great weekend.@ESPNCaddie on TwitterESPNCaddie@gmail.com is my emailPlay well.MC
