We'll get rolling here in a sec. Keep sending in your questions and comments. Several Tim Kish inquiries already in...
If Blake Bell wins the starting QB job as many people predict he will, do you believe either Thompson or Knight will transfer?
No James, at least not right away. I also don't think that Bell being named the starter necessarily ends this competition, either. What if OU goes up to South Bend, and Bell really struggles? You don't think Thompson or Knight would be given a chance to spark the team? As for Knight, he would still have two years to QB the offense after Bell graduated.
Should my Husband be looking for another job next year?
Angela, I didn't know you frequented the chat! Seriously, I knew this was coming after Akem committed to OSU over the weekend. Yes, OU wanted Akem, but Akem grew up an OSU fan, and already has a teammate in Devon Thomas committed there. It was a longshot. Then again, Curtis Lofton grew up an OSU fan...
DT situation. Any news?
Yes, Jordan Phillips has put on 100 pounds of muscle, Jordan Wade ran a 4.2 40-yard dash and Torrea Peterson is thinking about turning pro.
Is OSU out recruiting OU in the state of Oklahoma so far?
Of the top guys, OSU has 2, OU has 1. So, I guess you could say that. Several guys, though, like Steven Parker (who is a heavy OU lean, as least compared to OSU) still on the board.
I love OUs jerseys but any news of Pro combat or anything on new Uniforms?
Nope. And if there were, I have no indication it would be nothing more exciting than what we've seen in the past, unless someone can change Joe Castiglione's mind. One idea I think that would be cool that could be sold to Joe is going white helmets with a crimson interlocking "O" "U." Before Jim Mackenzie was hired in 1966, OU was still wearing white helmets.
Hey Jake,I'm thinking OU has a chance to run for about 3000 yds as a team this year. Do you think that's a realistic goal? The Bradford teams (07 and 08) rushed for about 2700 yards. I obviously don't see the pass offense being that prolific, but I predict a physical balanced offense next year.
Did Joe Washington, Jamelle Holieway and Lydell Carr re-enroll?
How would you rank QBs in the state of Oklahoma? Bell, Walsh, Knight, Lunt, Thompson, Chelf
This should be a fun exercise. I would rank them as follows: 1. Chelf, 2. Bell, 3. Walsh, 4. Thompson, 5. Knight, 6. Lunt -- with the bottom two, Knight and Lunt, owning the best upside of all six. Agree?
What's the latest on Alex Ross. Should we be worried about his tendency to be injury prone?
He had some kind of concussion issue among other ailments which kept him from scrimmaging this spring. Still too soon to worry about him being injury prone, though I am concerned a bit with his upright running style. It worked for Peterson, but A-Ross is no Peterson.
Do you feel like we are headed in the right direction as far as recruiting goes?
I do. Boulware, Montgomery and Bedenbaugh all appear to be enthusiastic recruiters, which is three steps in the right direction.
If you were coach, when would you name the starting qb? Now? Summer? Week before game 1?
Depends. If it was obvious, I wouldn't wait. I don't think it's obvious enough yet in Norman, so I'd be fine waiting until a couple weeks before the season. Who knows, maybe Thompson and Knight will show something during the first couple weeks of two-a-days.
Millard's odds at becoming an all american?
They would be great, if All-American teams recognized fullbacks.
What % would you give Keith Ford of redshirting?
50 percent, meaning there's a very good chance he plays.
How fast do you think the hurry-up offense will be this year w a new qb?
Slower than it's been since 2007.
Are you still predicting Cody Thomas to play football at OU instead of minor league baseball?
Yes. Don't think he'll be drafted high enough.
I know it's early but how has DJ Ward faired lately? And what does mr. Trotter think of Mel Kiper saying Landry was surrounded with mediocre players?
He hasn't really fared at all, since he wasn't allowed to practice until a couple days before the spring game. I disagree with Mel. Landry had a first-round LT, and a third-round WR. How many QBs could say that last season?
So about that ACC GOR....
The granting of rights would seem to thwart any future conference realignment there, unless some lawyer can unearth a loophole (which, btw, has been done before).
Jake, does LJ go in the top 70 picks?
Is he an early third rounder? I predict yes. But if he went in the 6th round, would I be shocked? No.
Lane Johnson is #3 on Mel Kiper's Draft Board, yet last summer he was battling Tyrus Thompson and others for a starting job. What does this tell us...are other OT's on Sooner Team that good? Did Lane get that much better over the last year? Or did coaches not evaluate differences between the tackles very well?
Lane has rapidly developed as a LT, considering he never played the position before 2011. When he gets drafted, that team will be drafting Lane on what they believe he'll be in 2017, not what he is in 2013.
What have you seen from the Sooners regarding overall depth? I'm curious to know if/when a starter goes down where can the Sooners take that hit and where can they ill afford to lose anyone.
The defense pretty much across the board is thin. Lose an Aaron Colvin or a Jordan Phillips, and things could go south quick. The offense is much deeper, especially at RB (where they might go 6 deep) and WR (where there are 8-9 guys fighting for 6 spots).
I was looking forward to watching Alex Ross in the Spring Game. Sounds like he could be a big star for OU. Was it an injury keeping him out of the game?
Yes, he didn't scrimmage during the closed practices either because of a lingering head injury, among other maladies.
Do you feel like this year's young defensive line combined with new energetic coaching and a more aggressive scheme will yield better results than last year?
I actually do. I liked what I saw from the d-line this spring in terms of where they are from where they came. Phillips showed flashes of becoming an impact guy, Peterson/Wade continued to improve, Chuka looks like he can help at DT, and Onuoha/Tapper still look very promising. It won't be a great d-line, by OU standards. But it's very possible it's not horrible, either, which is what I was afraid of in February.
Whats the latest on Quincy Russell. do you this he still shows up on campus?
I think he still shows up, but I thought Courtney Gardner would, too.
I agree it's two different rankings: Today's performance versus potential. However, I would flip Bell and Walsh. Walsh was the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year. Bell was a "special package" player who hasnt shown QB skills in game action.
Here's another question... would OU fans take the production Walsh delivered the games he started last season? I think the answer for many of you is probably, "yes."
Say Blake Bell starts the whole season and does decent (say 9-4). Will Stoops open up the QB competition again next spring to see if the extra year has given Knight/Thompson the time to pass Bell's ability?
Possible, but unlikely. The way, I think, it becomes an open competition again is if all three struggle this season, or if all three play due to injuries.
Do we get revenge in South Bend this year or will their defense be too much for us?
Probably too much.
When OU came calling, it meant something. What's happened? Our status seems to have really declined, from elite to average.
It's better than average, but you're right, the brand has suffered. Why Stoops made three coaching changes over the winter.
What does OU need to do this year to be in real contention of a BCS Championship
Kidnap Nick Saban.
That was cold Jake. My scenario it would go something like this:Bell (who had 201 yds on like 60 carries last year): 125 carries for 625 yds, 8 TD (including a 45 yd TD against OSU somewhere)DD Williams: 175 carries, 975 yards, 10 TDBrennan Clay: 100 carries, 500 yds, 5 TDTrey Millard: 80 Carries, 410 yds, 7 TDFinch: 40 carries, 220 yds, 3 TDRoss/Ford/Whomever: 80 carries, 520 yds, 6TD's
Are Duke Robinson, Phil Loadholt and Trent Williams all re-enrolling?
Where can OU afford to lose a starter if an injury occurs? What is the last place OU needs to see a starter injured?
Colvin is obvious because he's the only star on the defense. But really, if they'd be in trouble if they lost Cortez Johnson, Corey Nelson maybe, Jordan Phillips and possibly even Geneo Grissom defensively. There's just not a lot of experience there, and the offenses of the Big 12 will light you up if they find just one weakness (see Gabe Lynn/Texas Tech/2011 and Javon Harris/Baylor/2011)
Haven't been keeping up with reports, but how're the big uglies (on offense) looking so far?
They started off well, but the defense really won the day the last couple scrimmages. The o-line was banged up (still) with Irwin/Shead at less than 100 percent, Williams coming back from a knee, Ikard breaking his hand, Evans tearing his knee, and Kasitati still out with the knee.
What does Oklahoma need to do this year to get back to the top team in the NCAA... I loved them in the 70's.... They seem to falter since AP went pro.
Get better players. The talent level is down, especially on defense.
Who is your sleeper player that hasnt been talked about that will emerge as a standout player this season? Both on offense and defense.
I still believe in Trey Metoyer offensively. Defensively, look out for Aaron Franklin. He won't start, but he'll play a lot.
will Oklahoma win any games
How many rushing touchdowns by QB's this year?
Not many more than the last couple seasons. Bell got the ball every time OU was inside the 5.
John Gruden evaluation with Landry Jones had some positives for Landry and critique of the Offensive Play calling for Heupal. Said Landry was forced to try to do to much and press because of poor offense strategy? Thoughts? Heupal getting paid $550K year
Gruden overlooked OU's personnel issue when he was criticizing Heupel for not using tight ends. Would you have used OU's tight ends last year? I wouldn't have, especially if I could bring in Shepard or Saunders in instead. Now, criticizing the program for not having a tight end ready to play, that's fair game.
Will they have to switch to a 3 man front if injuries do occur on the d-line?
They were considering that before they felt confident that Chuka could slide inside. It would be on the table if they lost, say Jordan Phillips. Similar to the offense going to a four-wide set. Sometimes your personnel dictates the scheme.
back to the running game. Is under center just not a part of Josh Heupel's mentality? Can Millard not be a bull for Williams?
Heupel likes the pistol, just like Switzer liked the wishbone. I do think you'll see more 2-back pistol sets this year, though, with Millard as a lead blocker.
Hey Jake, how wrong am I in saying Roy Finch is OU's best rb on the roster (not counting Millard since he's technically a fb)? I know he's small and apparently has a poor off-field reputation, but wow, I almost forgot how big-time explosive he was prior to watching the spring game.
Mike Stoops said that he is hoping for Chuka Ndule to develop into a DT that can provide 25-30 quality snaps. That number seems very low to me, especially when you consider the lack of experience at the position. For me, we need at least 50 snaps out of him. What do you think?
I think they want Ndulue to play half the game, whatever number of snaps that is. Of course, that's assuming that Wade and Peterson and Russell are ready to play.
Jake, I was watching some OU highlights over the weekend. Seemed Blake was always one of the first to congratulate whoever made a big play and conversely his teammates "Rang the Bell" whenever he made the play. That is leadership, how big of an impact does it make next year.
Bell is definitely more outspoken than Landry is.
What would you put the over/under on wins? If it is 7.5 which way would you go?
Over. I'd put the over/under at 9.5
I thought GQBC with LJ was good TV and did LJ some service, but after watching it I still question how much LJ actually likes football. The dude is just a snoozer and the NFL guys see it which is why he is dropping. He will have a hard time leading NFL guys..
Some of that is a little overrated. If you're making plays, NFL guys aren't going to care if you're a rah-rah guy. The biggest hurdle for Landry is eliminating the bonehead mistakes that plagued an otherwise sterling college career.
Bring back The Bone!! Worked for texas last year.5 good tailbacks, 3 running QB's., 2 big fullbacks, and ... TE (OK never mind ... Run 4 wide.)
Am I on track to become a more involved, and explosive part of the offense my last year in Norman?
On track, yes. But when it comes to Finch, I'll believe it when I see it. This isn't the first time the coaches have given lip service on Finch and then not play him.
If you can't tell, I'm a big Roy Finch fan. I'd get him on the field.
All he does is make huge plays every time he's given a chance.
OU has one of the most difficult first 6 games of any team in the country. Considering OU has had difficulty early in the season most years, is OU making any practice/scrimmage changes to get team and coaches more prepared to start season. Lots of inexperience, I'd do more scrimmage and game time experiences
Not sure what they'll do, and I'm not sure they know either. Will depend on how they feel about their depth. But you're right, the early schedule is brutal. That 3-game stretch against ND, Texas and TCU could make or break the season.
If Roy Finch was on Nick Saban's roster would he be headed to the NFL by now?
Ha, with a Heisman in his trophy case.
Will we see much read option out of these qb's?
Yes, lots. The offense you saw in the spring game is not the one you'll see in September.
Jake how are the Book sales going?
Haven't checked in a long time, but they were going well when I last did. Thanks, Adam.
Did anyone on the planet actually believe that LJ believes he is better than RGIII. That was worst sell job I have ever an individual give...
Yeah, it was stupid. I get he was trying to project confidence, but there are better (less awkward) ways to do it. Landry is not the smoothest cat in the alley.
How's Jordan Phillips doing thus far? Any new news on QR?
I thought he had a terrific spring game, especially that second half.
Jake, as an outsider looking in, it sure seems like the '13 offense could be very lethal, possibly national title lethal. W all the receivers and rb's this team has, how far do you think the offense can carry the sooners this year if the defense does, indeed, struggle this year?
That's too optimistic. I like the depth and talent at RB, WR, but when I think about an offense capable of carrying a team to a national title, I think about the 2008 Sooners or 2011 Cowboys, both of which were loaded with first-round draft picks. Who is the first-round pick on this 2013 OU offense?
Do you think Huggins or Russell can come in immediately and make thier presence felt on the defensive line?
Russell yes, Huggins no.
I thought the new coaches would jumpstart recruiting. Hasn't worked out that way and I know it is early but it looks slower than expected.
Rome wasn't constructed in a day.
My point is that there are guys like Kiper going off on how little skill talent we have, yet Stoops and Co. continue to shelve one their most talented players. There seems to be a dis-connect in Norman.
When it comes to Roy Finch, there seems to be a big disconnect.
Cornwell and Hansen are both hightly touted quarterbacks both within the state and nationally? What separated Justice in the minds of the coaching staff and made him the priority QB recruit for the Sooners in Oklahoma? Also, how often has the state had two ESPN 150 top notch quarterbacks in the same year?
Cornwell is the better prospect, but I think OU liked its chances of getting Hansen and solidifying that position quickly. In a vacuum, Cornwell might be the guy. But everyone is after Cornwell, who might wait til the end to choose a school. And by going after Cornwell, you'd risk losing Hansen, who is big-time, too. I think what I just wrote makes sense.
Over/Under 15 catches by TE?
Ha, over, but not by much.
In Recruiting do major schools ever offer a 3 star kid in the hope to get his 5 star friend or relitive as well? Or is that just kind of a myth.
Think that happens in basketball more than it does football. That 5-star recruit can mean a lot more in basketball than it does in football.
What type of linebacker do you think Corey Nelson can be for us next year? I think he'll surprise a lot of critics.
The talent is there, for sure. I think you might be right.
Who will start opposite Colvin on the corner?
Breakdown the percentages of carries for the team this year...
Williams 40 percent, Clay 17 percent, Millard 16 percent, QBs 20 percent, Ford/Ross/Smith 6.9 percent, Finch 0.1 percent
What are the odds of us running the table in the Big 12?
Slim, but not impossible. I will have my annual story breaking down the odds of OU's schedule later this summer.
Truthfully WHY doesnt roy finch get the ball ?
You're asking me? I have no idea.
Does Bob finish his career with 1 National Championship?
Assuming Bob only coaches 5 more years, my prediction would have to be yes.
Do you think Gabe Ikard will be in attendance for the OKC Thunder playoffs?
He's usually a fixture. Hopefully he does a better job of taunting LeBron in the Finals than he did on Valentine's.
Great chat today Jake! Thanks
Thanks, Kris. Thanks, guys -- sorry I couldn't get to all the questions. I did my best. We'll do this chat throughout the offseason, every Monday at 3 p.m. CT. Otherwise, continue to stick with SoonerNation for the latest in OU football coverage.
