Chat with William Wilkerson

William Wilkerson
  (3:59 PM)

Hello everyone and thank you for joining me today for HornsNation's weekly Tuesday chat. There is a lot to get into so lets not waste anymore time.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the Very First Longhorn to be selected in the 2013 NFL Draft?

William Wilkerson
  (4:01 PM)

That's gonna be Kenny V Chris. I expect he'll go somewhere in the middle of the first round.

Nicolai (Denmark, Europe)

Hi Will!First of all, thanks for all the stuff that your and the rest of HornsNation brings us!How do you see a guy like Sheroid Evans fit in the secondary this season? He seems like a really talented guy! Also, which OOS (not counting Louisiana) prospect do you feel Texas has the best shot at?

William Wilkerson
  (4:03 PM)

Appreciate that Nicolai and thanks for reading us overseas. As for Sheroid, I think he could really be an asset on this defense in 2013. He's purely football now, no more track, which has helped. He had a really good spring game. I think his height can really come in handy against some of the bigger more physical WRs in the Big 12. Look for him to get considerable playing time.

Adrian (Austin)

Any word on whether Hicks will get the medical redshirt?

William Wilkerson
  (4:05 PM)

No word yet. I expect him to get one though.

Adrian (Austin)

Is this decommitting become more commonplace nationwide or is just unique to Texas?

William Wilkerson
  (4:06 PM)

It's definitely unique for Texas just because its never happened to the Longhorns in bulk like it has lately, but it is becoming more commonplace nationwide. I do think that Knox's decommmitment is going to be one of the few that happen in this class though. Texas just needs to win and all else will take care of itself.

Jake (Krum, TX)

two question topics: 1) As the draft nears, Brandon Moore's chances of being drafted seem to be getting lower and lower, he has the "measurables" but most mock drafts to not include him, I personally think he would be a late round steal but what do you think his future holds, as he can not regain eligibility after declaring.2) It seems like its all coming together for Ash, it seems like he has the skill set to be a very good QB this coming year but lacks drastically in confidence still. In my opinion this is the thing holding him back from being the next memorable QB at Texas, I wont throw him in the category with his 2 previous (I'm furloughing the Gilbert debacle) but I do think that he has all of the assets needed to succeed. IMO, this is what people loved about manziel, he had nothing to loose so he could just run around like a chicken with his head cut off and see what happens; Ash's introduction to the league was polar opposite in which we wanted him to do nothing special and just don't turn the ball over, will Texas let him loose this year? Will he play confidently with the "swagger" that Mack wants? Is he lacking in any other areas or can he be a great QB his last 2 years? Thanks for acknowledging the long post

William Wilkerson
  (4:10 PM)

Moore didn't have the type of impact in the middle of that DL as most expected. He was average at best. I think he should have stuck around another season and tried to improve his stock. Because that is no longer an option, as you've mentioned, I think he would be a solid late round selection for a team looking to build depth in the middle of their DL. However, I'm not sure if that will happen. Free agency might be the way to go. ...

William Wilkerson
  (4:13 PM)

As for Ash, he's never going to be the rah-rah type of guy that McCoy and VY were. That's just not his character. But he is definitely growing comfortable in his roll as the clear-cut starter at UT. That can't be easy. His way of going about things is probably not ideal for what most programs are looking for in a college QB. By that, I mean, he's not that fiery type that demands your respect through his actions. But he's garnered the respect of his peers by the way he's handled adversity. I think he'll be one of the top 2 or 3 QBs in the Big 12 this season. He's got the weapons and a solid OL in front of him to succeed. He has to keep his INT numbers down though. Has to.

Austin_44 (Wichita, Ks)

Is Tyrone Swoopes the next Vince Young? And if so should we expect more zone reads and pistol sets in offense?

William Wilkerson
  (4:16 PM)

A little early to call him the next VY, but I think their skills are very similar. For as much as VY liked to run people forget how well he was able to sling the ball around. His throwing motion may not have been ideal for NFL scouts but it got the job done in Austin. Swoopes, as we all saw in the spring game, is more than capable of doing things with his feet. But he's going to have to learn how to stay in the pocket, use his feet to give him that time, and trust his arm and his WRs to complete the catch. He's a work in progress. But his play at the spring game leads me to believe the progress has progressed much faster than a lot believed it would.

Taylor (Denton )

So... The All Saints boys... What happened? And is it likely we miss out on Thomas, Adams, AND Gresham now??

William Wilkerson
  (4:17 PM)

Knox and Texas just grew apart. We've got a really good piece on Knox on our homepage in which he speaks about that. Check it out. I'd be worried about Gresham if I'm a Longhorns fan. ... As for Thomas and Adams, I think Texas is in a better position for Adams than Thomas but are in the picture for Thomas as well.

Stephen (Seattle, WA)

Sup Will, Carter had a good take on Ash needed to embrace the leadership role. What kind of impact can naming Ash the starter so early on in the off-season translate into the success that UT is trying to reach?

William Wilkerson
  (4:20 PM)

Sup Stephen. I think it will have a huge difference. In one instance, looking over your shoulder and worrying about who is behind you and if they are good enough to take your job, is a good thing. it keeps you on your toes. But I truly think it got to Ash at times. Now that he is the clear-cut starter I think he'll relax a lot more. It's his third year in the system. He has more weapons this season than ever before and probably his best offensive line too. He should be able to focus in on the big picture a lot more instead of having to worry about the little things so much. The team is rallying behind him. They believe in him. He has a different way of going about things publicly than most high-profiled QBs. But that's something that Texas doesn't care about as long as he wins.

Adrian (Austin)

Is Gresham the next decommitt?

William Wilkerson
  (4:20 PM)

There is a decent chance of that being the case.

Ryan (Smalltown, USA)

Has Santos officially won the MLB battle? Or is everyone just expecting that he'll be the starter?

William Wilkerson
  (4:22 PM)

Nothing official has been declared but I do think he is in a really good position to take it over. He got himself in better shape and has not been bashful in asking his teammates for advice. He's earned it whether that becomes the case this year or not.

gary (stillwater)

What kind of season should we expect from Malcom Brown (DT) this season? What's this situation with Darrion Johnson? Any chance Texas lands any big time oos recruits this year? Thanks William!

William Wilkerson
  (4:24 PM)

What's goin on Gary. I think you should expect, at worst, an honorable-mention All-Big 12 type of season from MB. The dude is a freak, who started to show that late last season. He just needs to see the field a lot more, which he will in 2013. The one thing you worry about is how he'll be able to hold of multiple blockers now that Texas only has one dominate DE in Jeffcoat and not two like it had last season.

Ryan (Smalltown, USA)

How are Daje hands? And if they are good enough do you see him lining up in the slot this season? With all the running backs I think it would be good to get him some looks at the slot this season, and with his speed, getting him the ball in open space would be a dangerous weapon.

William Wilkerson
  (4:25 PM)

His hands are really, really good. That was the main difference between he and D.J. Monroe, and the reason he got more time than Monroe last season. Texas will likely toy with him in several different positions. Just get the ball in his hands and let him do his thing.

Ryan (Smalltown, USA)

If you were the Texas AD, would you have replaced Rick Barnes with Andy Enfield?

William Wilkerson
  (4:27 PM)

Well Andy seems pretty comfortable at USC but I do think it is time for change.

William Wilkerson
  (4:28 PM)

Especially if Barnes can't get something done next season.

Mike G. (R.G.V. Texas)

My main man Will!, glad your chatting with the HornsNation Amigo! Great job on following up on all things Longhorns and dropping us with the business and insights. Quick question..With the recruiting stampede that we just went through these past weeks; Who do you see being our next commit? Maybe Solly Thomas? or Nick Watkins? Hoping to hear read Jamal Adams' name on out commit list, but with saggy showing him a great time at A$m land, I don't see that happening soon..Thanks Sir William Wilkerson..Keep us posted Bro.

William Wilkerson
  (4:30 PM)

My man Mike G, appreciate you stoppin by. Solly isn't going to commit anywhere for a long time, Watkins too. They'll both come during the season or even afterward. Texas is still in good position with Jamal despite his good trip to College Station. He's really established a solid relationship with the Texas commitments and Quandre Diggs is a good friend. I think Texas' next commit will be from the secondary.

Chris (San Antonio)

If Cayleb Jones' ruling gets downgraded to a misdemeanor, and receives a 1-2 game suspension, will he still be able to participate in all the summer and fall workouts and practices?

William Wilkerson
  (4:31 PM)

I'd imagine he will but that won't be known for sure until Brown makes an announcement after a ruling is made.

Chris (San Antonio)

Chances Gresham sticks to his pledge?

William Wilkerson
  (4:32 PM)

Tough to say this soon afterward but I'll give it a 48% chance.

Chris (San Antonio)

If Texas woud have beaten TCU on Thanksgiving, would last season have been considered a success?

William Wilkerson
  (4:33 PM)

It would have given them 10 wins, which would have been a considerable improvement from the previous season. But I wouldn't call it a success though. No Big 12 title, got throttled by OU and KSU.

Chris (San Antonio)

Idk, with Solly's remarks about Texas' DE situation, he seems a little taken off by the numbers we have. Is Texas still considered the frontrunner to land him?

William Wilkerson
  (4:33 PM)

Wouldn't say they are the frontrunner but are in the conversation. There is a team out west that is really appealing to him right now.

Stephen (Houston)

What do you know of D'Onta Foreman? How good is he? Rivals has him rated as one of the top 50-60 players in the state of Texas. He currently only has 2 offers listed. Seems a player ranked that high in the state of Texas would hold more offers - especially considering his brother, Armanti, is likely to go to the same school so that they can play together.

William Wilkerson
  (4:35 PM)

D'Onta can play. He's a legit running back, who would like to play RB in college. But he might have a future at LB too. I think he's one of those guys that teams need to see more of in the fall now that they know how good his brother is.

Darrion (not Brenahm )

Where am i going to go to school william? will i even have a chance to play college ball anymore?

William Wilkerson
  (4:35 PM)

You tell me Darrion!

Jeremy (Oregon)

Did any coaches visit the Edna Carr and St. Agustine kids?

William Wilkerson
  (4:35 PM)

Not sure if they've made it out there yet but they certainly will.

Jeremy (Oregon)

Did Shaw say anything about getting the UT offer? any word from the kids that got offers yesterday being 2014 or 2015?

William Wilkerson
  (4:36 PM)

We will have much more on these guys in The Heard on Friday.

Stephen (Houston)

If Caleb Jones is eligible to play next season, do you feel significantly better about the offense? Would Duke move back to D?

William Wilkerson
  (4:37 PM)

"Significantly better" would be a stretch, but he would def. be an asset. I dunno what they'd do with Duke. He looked comfortable as a slot WR in the spring game. I think he'd be better served on defense though. Thing is, Sheroid Evans has really improved at CB.

Andrew (Texas)

Who's the next commit for Texas? What do they do with the OL now that Knox is gone?

William Wilkerson
  (4:38 PM)

I think it'll come in the secondary. OL is interesting because Texas has targeted many high-profile OOS guys. I think there are some sleepers in state that would jump on an offer.

Nick (United States)

After looking at the Texas Longhorn football schedule, I see Texas's only regular season loss being the TCU game what do you think?

William Wilkerson
  (4:39 PM)

BYU game is going to be tricky. KSU is early and at home but the Wildcats have owned Texas. OU is OU. Never know what Ole Miss is going to do. Think only 1 loss in the reg season is a stretch right now.

Jace (The Rock, Texas)

Which games do you feel we lose next year? I think we will come up short to BYU and to OU again

William Wilkerson
  (4:40 PM)

I think BYU could be one of the tougher games for Texas all season. The Cougars are just a solid ball club that is not going to beat themselves. Can't forget about KSU. OSU too with its quarterback play.

Mark (corpus christi)

Do you think we have a shot to win the Big 12, also what true freshmen will make an immediate impact.

William Wilkerson
  (4:42 PM)

Without a doubt Texas has a chance. No question. Texas just has to prove it now. I think Darius James is going to find a way to have an impact on this team despite the logjam at OL right now. Jake Oliver and Antwuan Davis are two others to keep an eye on.

Andy (Frisco)

Think Lorenzo Joe will be ranked higher in the next update in the 150?

William Wilkerson
  (4:43 PM)

I do. He was among the best WRs at the Dallas NFTC a few weeks ago. It's tricky simply because scouts aren't getting to see him as a WR right now. But I do think he'll make a jump.

Andy (Frisco)

Think Gresham goes? If so how many more rb's do you think we will go after?

William Wilkerson
  (4:44 PM)

I think there is a 48% chance he leaves. I also believe Texas is looking to take at least three RBs in this class.

Brooks (Texas)

Why is Marquise Goodwin not a top receiver prospect he runs 4.21 40 and a 42 in vertical he in my mind should be the number 3 WR in this draft class

William Wilkerson
  (4:45 PM)

One reason is because NFL scouts weren't able to see how well he could use that speed and leaping ability in Texas' offense like other WRs of his stature. He is clearly equally as athletic as Tavon Austin. But Austin will go much higher in large part to his tape and the number he put up last season.

Jordan (Quinlan, TX)

what was the reason for texas not offering rawleigh williams? seems like he would have committed if they had. lost out on a good prospect.

William Wilkerson
  (4:47 PM)

Dont think he would have committed on the spot but do think Texas would have been a frontrunner along with Ole Miss for sometime. I can't be certain on why they didn't offer. He has everything that you want in a RB. Texas clearly thinks that there are better ones out there in 2015.

John (Plano)

Which players of the following do you think we will get: tony brown, arrion springs, nick Watkins, Myles Garrett, Solomon Thomas, Jamal Adams, Edwin freeman, kd cannon, armanti foremanAny other espn 150 prospects that I didn't mention?

William Wilkerson
  (4:47 PM)

The guys Texas has the best chance of getting are Springs, Watkins, Thomas, Adams and Freeman.

Josh (Ohio)

How do you like T A&M's chances this year to win it all?

William Wilkerson
  (4:48 PM)

Slim. I think they are a supremely talented offensive team. But there are some questions on that OL and the defensive run game is a question mark.

MMM (san antonio)

whats your prediction (win/loss) for this upcoming UT season???

James (El Paso)

What is going on with Darrion Johnson? Considered him a must have among the DBs in Texas.

William Wilkerson
  (4:51 PM)

Think Texas is in a really good spot right now. Look at his Twitter page.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Have the particpants in the Southwest Classic been announced yet?

William Wilkerson
  (4:52 PM)

LSU vs. TCU

bob (you)

horns are terrible

William Wilkerson
  (4:53 PM)

Longhorns fans, meet Bob. Bob, Longhorns fans.

Rick Barnes (Austin, TX)

Time for change, say it isn't so, Will. Is there any chance I return to Austin for the 2014 season?

William Wilkerson
  (4:55 PM)

I think in order to return in 2014 (as in two seasons from now) you are going to have to at least get into the tournament. And I don't see that happening in 2013.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

With all the recent defections, how do you rate the Horns chances of landing Solomon Thomas and Jamal Adams?

William Wilkerson
  (4:55 PM)

Solomon: 33 %Jamal: 45 %A lot of schools factored in to both of these guys' decisions.

Bob (Texoma)

With Swoopes shooting up the depth chart, does Brewer transfer out? If he does, where does he look? Does Overstreet change position to LB/S?

William Wilkerson
  (4:57 PM)

I don't think so. Not at this point. Brewer looked good in the spring game and should see playing time in backup rolls this fall. If he did transfer I see him heading back to the west coast.

Derek (Indiana)

Who do you think would be the next commit for Texas?

William Wilkerson
  (4:58 PM)

It'll be someone Duane Akina coaches.

kp (houston)

Are you purposely avoiding answering questions about darrion Johnson? What's going on with him?

William Wilkerson
  (5:02 PM)

Not purposely avoiding any question. There are a lot of them to get to and they go in order as they come in. As for your question, there is little known right now. Word is he is no longer enrolled at Brenham. Where he is headed, I don't know. Texas is still the favorite for his commitment.

Keith (Seattle, WA)

Why have iTexas prospects soured on UT Basketball? Barnes owned the state when he first got there.

William Wilkerson
  (5:04 PM)

They aren't winning in the Big 12 and aren't doing anything in the tournament. Basketball programs don't primarily recruit regions like football. It's tough to compete with Kentucky, Duke, UNC, KU, Florida, etc.

Jason (Austin)

Do you think the OL stays the same with Espinosa, Hawkins, Cochran, Hopkins and Walters? Or do you see guys like Flowers, Estelle, Harrison becoming starters? Who is the best backup on the OL?

William Wilkerson
  (5:04 PM)

I see Harrison becoming a starter and either Hopkins bumping Espinosa at center or Hopkins being used as the primary backup.

William Wilkerson
  (5:05 PM)

Alright everyone, that will do it for this weeks chat. Thank you all for joining in. Until next time...
