Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the Friday chat for a huge fight weekend. We've got Garcia-Judah, Quillin-Guerrero and Khan-Diaz on Showtime and Sergio Martinez-Murray, Abregu-Decarie and Arreola-Stiverne on HBO. And next is the return of Floyd Mayweather to face Robert Guerrero. Plus Malignaggi-Broner was just signed. There's a lot going on. So check out all of our coverage, the features, blogs, news stories and the updated schedule. Now let's get to it.

Scott (Raleigh)

Have been reading all the chat about Murray, and how they say he's the best out there, and not just a showcase for Sergio's "coming home" fight; agree or disagree Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Martin Murray is no showcase opponent for Sergio. He's a solid contender with credentials, good power, good heart and I think a good chin. It's a real fight. Is Martinez the favorite? Of course, but this is legit im my opinion.

mg (okc)

what do you think of broner/malignaggi?Good fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I am interested in it and have been since it was first brought up.

Dan (Boston)

Hey DTM, congrats on your son. Just wanted to see how you had the Trout Canelo fight. I had it 115-113 for trout and acknowledge it was a very close fight given the amount of hard punches Canelo was landing, but 118-109?!?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Thanks. The baby has been great! I had Canelo winning 114-113.

Craig (Sarasota)

Good afternoon Dan, is Saturday night the night when Sergio's age and injuries finally catch up with him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

He had knee surgery, an ankle injury, a broken hand and stitches for two different cuts after the Chavez fight. He was really banged up but says he is in perfect health now. So we shall see. He is 38, but I think he is a relatively young 38 in that over the course of his entire career he has not taken a lot of punishment. That said, it is obvious that he has begun to slow down and the CompuBox stats are interesting -- he is getting hit more and more over his last four, five fights than he had been. That's a bad trend.

Norbert (Chicago)

Is Canelo ready to carry at PPV event on his own?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Absolutely.

JR (Los Angeles,CA)

i Noticed they didnt have a face-off with rios -alvarado. Are they still doing them ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Yes, but HBO doesnt do them for every fight. Usually just PPV fights.

Greg (Brooklyn) [via mobile]

Bernard Hopkins during his middleweight reign vs Sergio Martinez. Who do you take???

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

As great as Sergio has been, I would pick BHop.

Joe (Vancouver)

If Arreola beats Stiverne and Vitali retires, will the WBC award the heavyweight title to Arreola, or will he have to fight someone else for the vacant title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

That's unclear. It could do either. The wretched WBC often makes stuff up as it goes along. #wbcisdisgusting

Robert (Coal Valley)

Well, I must say, I was pleasantly surprised to read your article on the $23.3M bid for the Klitschko vs. Povetkin fight and not see Don King's name attached.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Exactly.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

DTM, just for fun, what's your early predictions for the 9/14 date(who fights who, & when)

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Based on his history of layoffs between fights it's hard to see Floyd actually getting back in on that date. I guess you never know. But I will believe it when I see it. I would imagine that Floyd would not fight and Arum will go with Bradley-Marquez. However, if Floyd doesnt fight I would guess Golden Boy will try to do Canelo-Cotto and then there will be a battle royale over the PPV date and it will ultimately be up to the promoters to see if they want to be stupid enough to compete with two good fights and split the audience and make way less money OR the cable and dish people will throw their support behind one of the fights and make it tough on the promoter with the fight they don't support, ultimately forcing the promoter to move that fight to another date. It's a fluid situation.

O'C (Denver)

Dan, What do you make of the Judah/ Garcia press conference yesterday. Why was he so upset an the Golden Boy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

It was interesting. He was made because GB made him wait and did his part after Garcia, leaving Judah in a room in the arena, he said with no water or food. He was upset and felt disrespected and really went after Oscar.

Tim (Philly)

Tyson Fury is entertaining as hell but his talent is questionable.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Well said.

Markus (NYC)

Welcome to the world, baby Danimal! Dan, having just experienced the birth of your son, can you understand Nonito's absence of mind in preparing for the Rigo match. Im not saying he would've won otherwise but he definitely can come up with a better game plan than that!

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Thank you. I am not sure if the baby on the way impacted Nonito's prep. What I do know is that even though you think about it, I spent nine months in the exact same situation and continued to work just fine and focus very well when I needed to work and travel. So, to me, using the baby as an excuse is not legit.

Amaury (Florida)

Hey Dan, if I mug and knock down Andre Berto in a street alley, do I get my shot at Mayweather too?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Very solid chance of that. :)

Scott (Raleigh)

Wow D$, I think Broner is gonna STARCH Paulie....doesn't have to worry about power, and way faster than Magic. What am I missing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Maybe Broner will but I know he is going up two weight classes to fight an experienced guy with a lot of confidence, in his hometown and who can take a good punch. I am a big Broner fan but his competition has been pretty lackluster because 130 and 135 did not have a lot of talent when he was there. Although I see vast potential in Broner let's not make him out to be Floyd just yet. Malignaggi is a good opponent for him to face, especially considering there is nobody notable who will fight him at 135 (Burns has dodged) and the top 140s are scheduled with other fights.

Matt (Virginia)

The idea of Martinez fighting Cotto is absurd to me. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

That was something Martinez threw out there. He has something against Cotto because he feels that he disrespected him at an event they were at together. Can't blame Martinez for calling him out. A fight with Cotto is a big payday and a big promotion.

Saul (Toronto)

For all the smack Tyson Fury talks...he sure can't back it up. He beat a small HW that happened to drop him hard on his rear...big deal. Wlad, Vitali, or Haye would seriously inure this disrespectful fool...just sayin...

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Agreed. Either Klitschko murders him. I spoke to Wladimir Klitschko at length this week and he said as much as he can't stand Haye, he would pick Haye to knock out Fury pretty easily.

Bing (Philly)

How likely is this scenario: Golden Boy really tries to stick it to Arum by making Canelo vs. Cotto on Sept. 14th AND THEN makes a Floyd fight for October

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Certainly possible, although I would not term it as GB trying to stick it to Top Rank. I would say if that scenario plays out it is because it is what is best for GB and those fighters. If it happens to mess things up for TR I think GB would consider it just a nice bonus.

Robert (Florida)

What have you thought of All Access so far? Haven't enjoyed it nearly as much as 24/7. Considering Liev Shreiber is about to start a new series on Showtime, can't they throw him some extra money to narrate All Access?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Liked the first episode, was bored by the second episode and have not yet watched the third episode. I have it on the DVR.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Dan when does the Berto tickets go on sale for the at&t center go on sale? When I heard its gonna be here I got more excited than for the Canelo fight. Real boxing fans will be at this fight. Cuz outside fans wont know any of the fighters on the card :)

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

That July 27 card is a good one but no ticket info has been put out yet. I would imagine after the Mayweather fight is over and the GB people come up for air. Here's my story on that show: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9206297/omar-figueroa-joins-tripleheader-andre-berto-keith-thurman

Tim (Alexandria)

Dan, if Broner gets by Paulie, do you still think there's a chance he could move down and take some of the good 140 fights available (Garcia, Matthysse, etc.)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Yes, based on what Richard Schaefer said to me. Those quotes are in my story on the Malignaggi-Broner fight from yesterday. Check it out right here: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9212818/adrien-broner-moving-2-classes-fight-paulie-malignaggi

Tim (Sydney)

How highly do you rate Daniel Geale? Do you think he could clean out the mw division and beat guys like Andre Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I like Geale and would like to see him mix it up with Martinez, Golovkin, Quillin, etc... But Ward is a different level. No shot in my view.

Julian (brooklyn)

Al haymon has a multitude of fighters in the 140 and 147 divisions (Mayweather, berto, broner, Garcia, Thurman just to name a few) do you think he is really willing to put those fighters against each other consistently?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

As far as I can tell he has never had his fighters face each other until this weekend when Quillin faces Guerrero. So maybe that's the start of his willingness to match his guys together.

todd (sf, calif)

memo heredia recently said on twitter that USADA costs around 25k, and that fighters pay out of pocket for testing. is that true?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I dont know the exact cost but USADA is way more expensive than VADA. Who pays for it is determined when the fight is made. Sometimes the fighters pay for it, other times they negotiate to have promoters pay for it and I would imagine sometimes they share the cost.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - with the Mayweather fight about a week away, I get the feelng that his PPV numbers for this one aren;t going to be that impressive. Guererro is good, but unkown to the general public, no Canelo on the undercard and not a lot of buzz out there right now. Do you see a sub-1 million buy rate for this show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I dont know about sub-1 million but nothing shocks me really. I can say this -- to me -- MY OPINION -- this has been a lackluster promotion. Way less stuff than other supposed major fights I have covered. The most significant thing is that the fighters, mainly Mayweather, have been WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY less available to media than other fights. I guess we will know soon enough.

Johnny (Brooklyn)

Congrats on the new addition to the Fam Dan. I am excited about Judah v Garcia, but I feel like Garcia should get knocked out by a hopefully in shape and focused Judah, I have not been impressed with Garcia's boxing skill--what say you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

As Garcia says, skill or not, he knocks guys out.

Bing (Philly)

Predictions for this weekends bouts? I think Judah frustrates Garcia early but then falls apart en route to getting KO'd late. AKA your typical Judah fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I like Martinez over Murray, Arreola to knock out Stiverne, Garcia by knockout, Quillin by knockout and Khan by decision over Diaz.

Timmy (Los Angeles)

Canelo landed less punches than Rigondeaux, had a horrible workrate and stayed on the outside the whole time, why no post about Canelo fighting boring?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Because it wasnt boring to me and most others I have heard from. And he did not stay on the outside the whole fight. Not sure what the heck you were watching. I rather enjoyed that fight.

Oral B (Ohio)

Pleased to announce Adrian Broner as our new spokesman

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob (Denton, Tx)

I know he is not the best HW out there but Tyson Fury has lured me in with his WWE approach. Starting with tomorrow night with Areolla, there is a lot of fun HW fights that could be made.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

There have been several good heavyweight fights that could be made, but the promoters generally dont make them because everyone is petrified to take a chance and just wants the Klitschko fight.

Tim (Sydney)

Would you pick Golovkin over Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I would pick Ward to beat anyone in the world from 160 to 175.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - am I crazy to think that Arreola v Stiverne fight may steal the show this weekend? Bombs away!

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

It certainly could. They're both big punchers with limited defense.

Brandon (Jacksonville)

Dan-o, now that Ortiz is done dancing, is there any talk of who his next opponent could be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Not yet. But he has said he will be back in the fall. There are plenty of solid fights for him.

Berndawg (CHI)

Triple Thumbs up to ESPN.com for the LIVE weigh-ins today. Well done!!!

Tim (Sydney)

Prime Kostya Tszyu vs Danny Garcia?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

No offense to Garcia, but that is easy work for Tszyu. Made to order.

BlackRobbb (Bronx)

Does Richard Schaefer think he's fooling anyone when he says he plans on the winner tomorrow night fighting Lucas Matthysse? Matthysse-Garcia is the LAST fight GBP wants because Matthysse will flatten Danny.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

You're wrong. GB has both guys and wants to make those top fights at 140.

Tony (Miami)

Mayweather is about to be humbled a little buy the PPV numbers from this fight. He's going to find out that the threat of Pacquiao has helped make him millions.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Very possible. I have believed from the start of this that because Manny got knocked out that the prospect -- however remote it was -- of a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight going away hurts the selling of a Floyd fight. The carrot of that big fight is no longer there for this promotion. Before, the prospect of the big one hung over both of their fights and kept people interested. Now Mayweather is just fighting a guy they probably havent really heard of. And if he wins, there isnt even the remote prospect of Pacquiao being next so the interest dwindles.

Jim (Santa Monica)

I really thought we saw someone die in the ring on ESPN last weekend with Fortuna's knockout win. Absolutely obliterated Zamudio. When someone is in that bad of condition, are you generally for or against the multiple replays like they showed on FNF last weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

As long as the guy was ok and there was no gruesome injury I have no issue with replays. That's part of the deal.

Travis (San Antonio) [via mobile]

DTM, any idea on how many watched Canelo-Trout or the Fury fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I dont have exact numbers but I am told that the overall audience for Fury-Cunningham was a lot more than Canelo-Trout, which is not a big surprise since one was one on NBC (100 million homes or whatever) and one was on Showtime (22 millionish homes).

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Here's my feature on Garcia-Judah and the nuttiness of yesterday's pretty conference: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9211944/danny-garcia-zab-judah-wait-settle-score-saturday

Brandon (Jacksonville)

Dan...are people serious about a possible Cotto-Alvarez fight? I love Cotto but do you think he could take the punches?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Of course that is a real possibility. Cotto is one of the biggest stars in boxing, Canelo is an emerging star. Obviously, the fight would mean something to the public. And even though Cotto is not in his prime anymore, he is still a quality fighter. It's not like he got beaten up when he fought Trout. He lost a decision to slicker guy. And now Canelo has proven himself by beating Trout.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Everybodys forgetting PAC-Bradley made 700,000 buys. Now all of a sudden if Mayweather fights under 1 million its a failure.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

First off, Pac-Bradley did more than that. Second, Floyd is the one who constantly harps on the fact that he is the money man, that he is the ppv king, that his fights are huge no matter who he fights. So if he doesnt deliver at least a million buys -- AT LEAST -- the promotion is an abject failure.

JJ (New Orleans)

No place better to read the chat than on the can.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

These are my readers.

Gregory D (Raleigh,NC)

Wow, no love for Judah at all, I guess this is it for him as a significant fighter if he doesn't perform well tomorrow night, what's your thoughts Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Not sure what you mean but Judah has nine lives. He has lost, come back, lost, come back many times. If he loses to Garcia it's not good for him but he has shown a way of finding a way back to a title fight.

Dave (MTL)

I haven't heard much about the Abregu/Descarie fight. Even though the Argentinian is the favorite, do you think Descarie has a legitimate chance to pull the upset?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I like this fight but I think Abregu is going to be too physically strong for Decarie, who is more of a boxer compared to Abregu. But I like it because both guys won on HBO to earn this kind of fight and return invite to the network. That's how it's supposed to be done. The winner of this one will add his name to a good division and make himself a viable challenger for one of the titles.

Lloyd (Brooklyn, NY)

what time will showtime replay the amir khan fight on Saturday night & will it be on the main Showtime channel?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

It is on regular Showtime and the telecast of that fight will come on immediately following the the conclusion of the Garcia-Judah telecast, approx 11:30 pm ET/PT.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, if Judah wins this weekend, would you consider it the biggest win of his career? Only other 1 I can think of is his win over Spinks....

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

It would be pretty darn big and would rival the Spinks win. But I would still rate Spinks a bigger one because it was for the undisputed title in Spinks' hometown in a revenge rematch.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

By the way, purses according to the New York commission: Garcia $1.25 million, Judah $300k, Quillin $340k, Guerrero $100k, Danny Jacobs $30k, Kennan Collins $15k.

Greg (Olney md)

Rios/Alvarado vs Provodnikov on the Bradley Marquez card? Any thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Not happening.

Alfredo (Toronto)

Mikey Garcia again rigondeaux ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Not at this point. Down the road? Who knows. But Garcia will be back in June. He will defend his title -- the two names being discussed are Juanma Lopez (if he gets in reality with his purse demands) and Orlando Cruz. After that, Garcia is probably going to 130.

Jim (Santa Monica)

Biggest upset ever happened in Trout's interview. Seems like the first time ever that someone has ever followed up "No excuses" with a "the better man won" instead of "but....".

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Just another reason to like and appreciate Trout.

The Met (T.O.)

Wow, so Quillin is making more than Judah tomorrow? A still-unknown contender with zero fan base? Truly does pay to be managed by Haymon, promoted by Golden Boy, and fighting on Showtime, doesn't it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Yes.

Peter (Ireland)

If Khan and Mayweather both win, what are the possibilities of them fighting each other next. Not crazy about that fight, but seems marketable.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I am certain that fight is one of the possibilities that was considered as part of Floyd's Showtime contract.

Jeff (Scottsdale AZ)

Dan,Help me understand why Povetkin's promoter would over pay for the rights to the Wlad fight....what's the angle?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I have no idea. The purse bid they put up -- $23.3 million -- was mind boggling. They obviously wanted to make sure they won the bid.

Willy (BK)

Any idea if the Khan fight be shown to the Barclays crowd?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

It wont be.

Ricky (NYC )

Dan how high would you rank Marquez vs Morales as great fights that never happened? I still hope they would fight but with Marquez tied up and morales barely hanging in there it seems doubtful

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

To me, it is WAY up there. I always wanted to see it. I wrote columns about it, always wrote I wanted to see it. I thought there was a good chance last year but it didnt happen. Now I think the door is probably closed. I would say that fight not happening is up there with the likes of Tyson-Foreman, Lewis-Bowe, a Trinidad-Oscar rematch, etc...

The Hard Y (PDX)

Do you consider Khan chinny?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Is the sun hot? Do I despise the wrecthed WBC? is Bing an idiot? Do TR and GB hate each other? Is the truck in the HBO opening credits stupid?

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Forget Garcia, I wanna Zab v Oscar lol

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

LOL!! Exactly. I exchanged some emails this morning with Richard Schaefer, who is in England for the Khan fight, and I joked about that, said the exact same thing.

Ken (OH)

DTM, which fight will you be watching live Saturday, Martinez/Murray or Garcia/Judah? Looks like they will be on about the same time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I will be at the Barclays Center tomorrow covering Garcia-Judah. I will watch the rest of the fights on Sunday when I get home.

Donell ((Pgh,Pa))

Good afternoon dan. Do you think that mayweather and pacquaio will fight in sept-2013? I still think its possible. Do you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

There is no chance of that happening. None. Nada. Nyet. Zip. Zero. Fuggetaboutit.

Guano man (PR)

dan will you be back to covering fights next week with the mayweather card? and do you plan to be at mathysse peterson on the 18 and pascal vs bute on the 25 th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I will be in NY tomorrow, I will be in Vegas next week for most of the week and I will be at Peterson-Matthysse as well. The 25th, not sure yet.

Jimmy (London)

Good to see you over here on Ringside with the boys again, Dan! Any news on Haye's opponent for June?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Thanks. Nothing concrete yet on his opponent.

Jeff (Scottsdale AZ)

Give me your P4P Clown rankings for April... My top three are Angel Garcia, Tyson Fury and the guy that overpaid for a Povetkin fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

LOL, very solid!

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - When you watch recorded fights, does your job force you to know the outcome already or do you try not to spoil it for yourself?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Nothing forces me, but I generally find out. It's no big deal.

Joe (NJ)

After Fury's showing vs. the much smaller Cunningham, how do you see the potential final eliminator vs. Pulev playing out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Very tough fight for Fury IMO. Pulev seems like he has good power and a good chin and he also has a bit of an ackward style. He has also faced a huge opponent before in Ustinov so I dont think Fury's size would be a big shock to him.

Fred (CT)

I hope Floyd comes out to the Ghostbusters theme on fight night. That would be awesome.

Mike (Vegas)

How does the Barclay's stand up as a boxing venue? On TV it looks great!

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

It's very nice. I like covering fights there.

brian (ca)

Is there any legitimate way for the Povetkin-Wlad promoters to make $23.3 million on that fight? They are going to lose a lot of money, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I see know possible way they can make money on that fight unless they have some sicko sponsors. There is no PPV in Germany or Russia so that limits the money in a major way. The revenue they would have is the ticket sales, sponsors, the TV rights each individual country pays (not even close to $10 million, much less $23 million). It's a bizarre bid.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Update from Brooklyn: Quillin and Guerrero are BOTH overweight. Quillin was about a pound and a a half over, Guerrero about a half-pound over. They have an hour to lose it.

Hiubert (Miami)

Lets cut to the chase, Whats up with Joel Julio?????

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

javier gorbea (PR)

Dan If you have to choose to cover only one fight on sept 14 will you prefer to cover cotto vs canelo or marquez vs bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I'll cross that unlikely bridge if I ever come to it.

Chris (Redondo Beach)

ESPN Deportes is reporting that Donaire will fight Victor Terrazas next. Shouldn't his team be focusing on a rematch with Regondeaux?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

ESPN Deportes is wrong. That is one possibility.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Garcia and Judah are being kept separate at their weigh in. There wont be a faceoff.

Willy (BK)

Zab's team was forced to wait around during final presser in Barclays basement? I'm just glad they didn't put them in one of the locker rooms near the shower doors.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Dan, with a great weekend of fights on the horizon, I can barely contain my excitement. Thus NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Danny Garcia about to weigh in.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Garcia 139.8 pounds.

Peter (Ireland)

Sergio Martinez has a great story. Imagine leaving your country simply for more opportunities and coming back 10 years later a national hero. Must be surreal.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

It really is a great story. I know Sergio is very excited to be fighting at home again.

Mike (Irvine)

Are you holding the little booger as you chat king freak?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

No, Mrs. DTM is in the room with him.

Frank (PHX)

You didn't give us your prediction on the Wilder fight and are they showing that on Showtime too?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Wilder's fight is not going to be on Showtime. Maybe highlights. But I think he knocks Audley out cold.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - When voting for the HOF, do you or would you ever consider a fighter that was either busted or suspected of using PEDs?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Yes, I take that into consideration along with everything else.

Mike (Irvine)

Isn't Donaire on the shelf for a while after the surgery on his shoulder?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

He told me about 7 weeks before he can train but then he will take some time off because his wife is due with their son in July.

Brett (Minneapolis)

Danimal, Have you heard anything about the ramifications if Floyd does not fight 6 times in the next 30 months?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

There are no ramifications. He doesn't have to fight that many times in 30 months. He can fight fewer but the terms are outlined if he does fight that many.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, do you think fighters like Ward and the K-bros are actually hurt financially by being so much better than their peers, since theres really no good matchups for the public to look forward to?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Of course, that has an impact. If there was a big rivalry for the klitschkos they'd have bigger fights. Same for Ward.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Now Zab getting on the scale.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Zab slightly over, will strip down.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Zab stripped nudie style and makes 140.

Simon (London)

Have Quillin and Guerrero joined the 'Jose Luis Castillo' school in weight making?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Not yet. They still have time to shed the weight.

Gil (NYC)

Berto Ortiz 2 in the fall would make for a good scrap

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Agreed.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Here's my feature on Amir Khan's fight tomorrow: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9214532/amir-khan-expecting-megafight-saturday-juan-diaz-bout

Steven (Chicago)

Have you heard any rumor to fights happening where the White Sox play, US Cellular Field, here in Chicago?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Yes, there is an August ESPN2 card that will take place there.

Derek (Boulder, CO)

Dan, 1.5 lbs seems like a lot to lose in one hour, do you think Quillin even tries?

Hiubert (Miami)

Does Quillin get stripped if he doesnt make weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Yes, obviously.

Markus (NYC)

FNF on the southside of Chicago! Yes!! My hometown, my ballpark, my favorite sport (Boxing), and I love the White Sox as well! Thanks for the good news! I will have to fly in.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

It should be pretty cool. I know covering the Cotto-Foreman fight at Yankee Stadium was a great experience.

Markus (NYC)

What ever happened to Alfonso Blanco and/or the Velasquez twins? I was looking forward to those prospects and have ot heard anything about them.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Blanco went home to Venezuela and I have no idea what is up with him. Velazquez twins had some injuries. One of them (cant recally which) is actually on the GB Fox card in Vegas on May 3.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Is having to lose 1.5 lbs. significant enough to have an effect on Quillin?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Maybe. I saw his interview with Showtime after he was over and he said he was not totally dried out yet so he think he can make it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Maybe. I saw his interview with Showtime after he was over and he said he was not totally dried out yet so he think he can make it.

Anthony (Chicago)

Freaks, before you type your question say it yourself. If it sounds stupid, it probably is.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Probably best chat advice ever.

C. Butler (Los Angeles)

I've seen recently that the tape on boxers gloves have signatures by 2 different commissioners. Is this normal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Those are signatures by an inspector. Defintely could be -- and often is -- two different people from a commission.

Markus (NYC)

How did you like Radio City for a fight? were the bad seats really bad?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I enjoyed it. The press was seated on the stage very close to the ring, but there was one row in front of us where there were fans who sometimes liked to stand which was not good. The public was on the theater watching the fights on the stage. There were also plenty of screens with replays and the live fight so it seemed like it was good for everyone. The seats were better than the fight.

Frank (PHX)

DTM, I heard about the CBS documentary special on Mayweather airing this Saturday. Is this the same episode of 30 Days in May or something different?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

No, it is different. This Saturday's docu (8 pm on CBS) was produced by Ross Greenburg. I spoke to Ross the other day about it. He said he had a two-hour sitdown interview with Floyd for the docu and they covered a lot of territory, especially about his time growing up. I am interested in seeing it. And knowing how great of a producer Ross is, I am sure it will be excellent.

KJ (fairfax)

Dan what do you say to JMM remarks about Manny not being enough of a challenge?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I cant argue with it if that is Marquez's opinion, although I would remind him that Manny is still up 2-1-1 in their series.

Ange (Farmville, VA)

Tyson fury grabbing the mic and singing was probably one of the biggest recent 'what the hell?' moments. I wonder if he thought he'd make any fans with his singing voice.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

He sings better than he fights. :)

Frank (PHX)

I didn't get to see the Juan Diaz fight couple weekends ago but I heard he looked good, what do you think is next for him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Considering the time off, I thought he looked pretty good, yes. He fits in with any top fight at 135 but there is nothing set for sure. I think Golden Boy might try at some point to make a big Texas fight with Diaz against Omar Figueroa.

Nick (DE)

Are the divisional rankings coming back next week? Will they continue to be weekly?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Yes, they will be back. The birth of my son mixed up my schedule and I am doing the best that I can to keep up with everything but the rankings had to be held off. I dont think anyone realizes how work intensive they are every week.

Armand (New Orleans)

Did Zab Judah really get naked for the weigh in??

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Yes, not unusual to have that happen at a weigh in. They put up a towel in front of him.

Joe (PA)

What happens if Povetkin's promoter can't come up with the money, will the fight fall through again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

The purse bid winner is not Povetkin's promoter. Sauerland Event is and they were third in the bidding. If Hrunov defaults the fight rights would fall to K2 Promotions, which had the second-place bid at $7.1 million.

Armand (New Orleans)

When Wladamir defeats Povetkin, will he now have the WBA Super and WBA regular belt?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

No, the stuid regular title would be vacant.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, is the danny jacobs fight going to be included on the showtime broadcast this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Stephen Espinoza told me Showtime would air highlights of the bout.

Timmy (Los Angeles)

Wlad doesn't want to fight Povetkin, he wants to continue racking up money against garbage competition like Pianeta, Mormeck and Wach

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Fact: K2 twice won purse bids for the fight and Povetkin walked away from career-high money to avoid it. Klitschko has wanted the fight.

Ange (Farmville, VA)

Just curious, does Gary Shaw have any marquee fighters?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

At his point Gary's only major fighter is Chad Dawson although he has several others on his roster, including Antonio DeMarco and some prospects.

Matt (Philly)

Just a quick update: The WBA has 31 champions.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

That would be ok -- if there were 31 divisions and not 17.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

So if Todd duBoef has a good relationship with Floyd, how come he can pick up the phone and make the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Because Top Rank is still Arum's company.

Frank (PHX)

Has Showtime announced who's going to be calling the Mayweather/Guerrero fight? I hope they replace Renallo

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

It's not something they need to announce. It will be the regular crew -- Mauro, Al, Paulie with Brian Kenny hosting.

FabFlo (Austin)

what is the highest purse bid ever? i think you had mentioned the one for Wlad/Povetkin was the 3rd highest. what's second too?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Read the end of this story: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9207679/eventual-wladimir-klitschko-alexander-povetkin-fight-fetches-233m-purse-bid

Ricky (OH)

Dan, is Showtime Extreme airing some undercard fights too?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Not this week, no. There is no Extreme this week because Showtime did not want fights on Extreme to be on up against the Mayweather docu on CBS.

Armand (New Orleans)

Has there been any news at all about whether Vitali is going to retire?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

He has not announced any decision yet. So nothing new.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

News from the Bat Email: Both Quillin and Guerrero returned to the scale and both made 160.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Can you clear up the rumor mill for us Dan. Did Errol Spence knock out Broner and rumor has it that he has worked over Floyd a little bit in the gym as well.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I do not have a definitive answer to this. I was not there and have heard various rumors.

Rags (NYC)

Is Alvarado now the official frontrunner for Pacquiao in October?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

No, it's Rios and the fight likely will be in November.

Josh B (Canmore, ALB)

Dan, since we are talking about fights that never happened, I would like to mention the mythical fight between John Ruiz vs Vaughn Bean. That would have been a legendary night to say the least sir........

Brett (Minneapolis)

Bradley vs JMM, could be interesting..... thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

I agree. I dig the fight.

Armand (New Orleans)

What did you think of the Fury/Cunningham fight in terms of excitement? Was it one of the better heavyweight fights you have seen in a while?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

It was defintely a fun fight.

Frank (NY)

Wlad is ducking Povetkin? That is like saying "The Undertaker is ducking Santino Marella."

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

LOL, exactly. Klitschko has never ducked ANYONE.

robert (laredo)

DTM!!! i heard HBO or maybe you wrote stating that donaire vs rigo was 1st fight in years at Radio Music hall....but didn't abner mares fight there during the tournament by showtime?? i might be wrong... thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Donaire-Rigo was the 2nd fight there ever. Roy Jones fought there in 2000. Mares fought the final of the tournament in California.

Armand (New Orleans)

What is your fight of the year so far?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Alvarado-Rios 2.

Jacob (Clovis, CA)

Dan, any word on the ticket sales for Garcia/Judah? Seems like it should do well with the pre-fight shenanigans and having two local fighers headlining . . .

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Havent heard anything specific but it's a good card, has gotten solid pub and the tix are priced well. I think there will be a good crowd there.

David (PWAY NJ)

Are you still at home watching the baby or going to be in BK for the Garcia fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

I'm home but I will be go to Brooklyn in the morning.

Wilson (DC)

Dan, love Pac/Rios, but what's the reasoning behind picking Rios over Alvarado? I would think Alvarado would make for a better promotion since he's coming off a win.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

I am told Pacquiao's team prefers Rios.

Pete (Texas)

You have said Mayweather has been way less available to the media for this fight. Why do you think that is? You would think he would try harder to impress his new bosses.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

No idea why, just the way it has been.

Frank (PHX)

With Larry Merchant working the international broadcast for Canelos fight, can we possibly see him work on future Showtime cards? I heard him say in a interview he was a free agent and free to work with anyone.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

He is not permitted to do Showtime fights as per the paper he still has with HBO.

Edwin (NYC)

DTM. Angel Garcia may seem like a madman to some but if you really listen to what he says, the man gets boxing. Do you agree or do you think he's basically nuts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

I first met Angel way back when Danny had just turned pro. I've talked with him many, many times. He's a little nutty, for sure, but he does get boxing and I also think he's a bit crazy -- like a fox. He enjoys what he does and is having a good time.

Craig (Virgina)

Now that Vic Darchinyan has signed with Top Rank, will he get his life-long wish of a rematch Donaire, and perhaps even a fight with Rigondeaux?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Those are both possible or he could wind up with Terrazas, Gradovich, Garcia. The point is, he fits in at 122 or 126 and TR has a lot of those guys.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Now that Abrugeu signed w Top Rank we gonna see Abrugeu vs Provodnikov?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

TR does not have Provodnikov. He is with Artie Pelullo.

Ed (Queens Village)

Did Donaire cost himself millions and future PPV bout with that poor showing in NYC?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Not at all. There were no immediate plans for him to be on PPV and his next fight probably will be back on HBO anway. Maybe he cost himself a few hundred k from his next purse but certainly not millions and not a PPV fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)
