WHat do you think the chances are that the Falcons move up in the second round to get someone like Zach Ertz
Possible. But they might be able to stay put and get Gavin Escobar, who is pretty good.
Alright Pat, who do the Panthers select in round 2? I'm hoping for Cyprien, but he may be gone by then...
That wouldn't be bad. If not, maybe Swearinger or a CB.
Do you think Blount will be traded during the draft? If so , whats logical compensation.
Think it certainly is well known that he's available. But doubt they'll get more than a 6th or 7th round pick.
With Wright, Revis, Goldson, and Barron how does the secondary compare to last year?
What do you see as the Falcons biggest need now that the CB hole has been filled
Don't see any remaining huge need areas. All about depth now. Maybe d-line, maybe LB, maybe a TE and maybe one more offensive tackle. That's about it.
How would you grade the 1st rd picks for the NFC south so far?
I just did that. Go take a look at the blog.
Pat, Gruden seems to think Mathieu is the best corner in the draft. What if carolina takes him in the 2nd? he could play safety as well couldnt he?
Not sure Jerry Richardson would sign off on that one.
Any word on Ronde?
Should the Saints have gone with a LB or DL instead of taking Vaccaro when they did?
You could make that argument. And a part of me believes they should have gone with a pass rusher. But Vaccaro is versatile and he'll help a secondary that needs help.
Panthers had their choice between Star Lotulelei and Sharrif Floyd. If you were GM, do you go with Star as well?
Do you still see a possibility of the Falcons drafting Lattimore? Or did that go when the Falcons traded up?
No, still think there's a chance.
whos tampa targeting in the 2nd and do they move up to get him
Think Zach Ertz could be a possibility.
you keep saying the Falcons filled their last need and are just now building depth but wouldn't you agree that defensive end is a bit of a need right now?
Yeah, they could use another pass-rusher type. But it's not a desperate need. Right now, they could take the field with Umenyiora and Biermann and at least be decent.
How good is the Star really? Can his drop in the draft all be explained by the non existing heart problem?
I think he's very good. I think it was a great pick by the Panthers.
Pat will their be any problems for the Panthers coming from the story that ran in Yahoo yesterday about Richardson using his "stroke" with the Commish to get the Thurs. opening game moved to Wens. for the DNC and then using that to get the Charlotte leaders to help pay for his stadium renovations?
Don't know. I'll have to go back and read the story. Didn't see it yesterday because I was a little tied up with the draft.
Have we seen the only trade from Dimitroff in the draft?
Think "Trader Thomas" still could be active.
I disagree with the TE pick for tampa and am convinced they will take a D lineman what are some good options for tampa on the D line?
I wouldn't argue with d-line. Margus Hunt or Carradine or a DT.
Since there has been no movent on the Abraham front is there a good chance he lands back with the Falcons?
Still think it might be a long shot. He's likely to get some offers after the draft.
I know you said ATL could take the field with Osi and Biermann and be fine but considering they have no other immediate needs and that not many DEs were taken late last night, could you see them moving up in the 2nd for Carradine or Hunt?
Wouldn't rule that out.
Should I give my #24 to Revis?
Yep, but make sure you get paid nicely for it!
Hey Pat! What do you feel are biggest needs for the Panthers to address in today's rounds and who do you see them drafting? Thanks!
Secondary. Not sure they can trade up. They only have four picks remaining.
Here's the story - http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Jerry-Richardson-tells-city-council-of-his-influence-in-NFL.html
Thanks. Will take a look after the chat.
Are you surprised Manti Te'o and Eddie Lacy both fell out the first round?
No, not really.
Do you think with the addition of Star that the Panthers now boast the most feared front 7 in the NFC South ?
Right now, yes. But Tampa Bay's front seven has potential to be pretty good.
With the overhauled secondary and Rhonde still undecided, would the Bucs still reach for a Nickel DB? Maybe Mathieu in the 3rd?
It's just my opinion, but I'd steer clear of the Honey Badger.
Assuming Revis returns to his past self, is he the best player the Buccaneers have ever had on their roster?
He'd be close. But there were guys named Brooks and Sapp that once played in Tampa Bay.
Is it possible we could see a QB drafted to the NFCS tonight?
Would think it's possible for Tampa Bay.
Hey Pat...So Abe is still out there. Are there ANY rumblings that ATL will be able to scoop him up at a reduced rate. You'd have to think they could be open with him in saying, "Hey, this is all we got left in the bank for 2013...ya want it, its yours," sorta approach? Is this thought even feasible anyway? Man we put him opposite Osi with all our loose ends tied, and we can feel REALLY good.
Again, on Abe, I think it's a long shot. Think he already had chance to stay at reduced rate and wanted to be cut free.
TURN ON AUTO-UPDATE
It's on on my end. You need to turn it on on your end.
Pat how much of a priority will the Oline be for CAR in the upcoming rounds? Byron Bell makes for a nice story but he is clearly not a long term solution on the line.
Think that has to be a fairly big priorty.
Is the risk or the reward bigger with the Honeybadger?
Just my opinion, but I think there's huge risk.
Do you think the panthers go with a wide receiver like keenan allen or justin hunter in round 2 or a DB like Jonathan Banks, John Cyprien, or DJ Swearinger??
I'd rather see them work on the secondary.
Over/UnderBucs draft 2 players from Rutgers
I'll take the under and say one.
In my opinion, Desmond Trufant is going to be able to improve his game a lot more than Milliner, Hayden, or Rhodes (the other first round CB's) because everyday in practice, he is going up against Roddy White and Julio Jones, two of the best WR in the game.
Working against those guys certainly won't hurt him.
What are the Bucs doing with RT? No one behind Dotson, plus he is making backup money! I have not heard any mention of filling that spot. Your thoughts Pat. Thanks
Still think you could see something happen there in the draft ...or after it.
We can't seriously not bring in anyone to Stephen Nicholas after the way the wegot exposed by TE in the playoffs can we?
Draft is far from over.
Pat why are you pulling against me you don't know the struggle that I have been through in my life just to make an NFL team.
Just being honest.
Think the Saints try to get into the 2nd round? And do you think The Chris Ivory trade is coming today or tomorrow?
I think a Chris Ivory trade will come at some point during the draft. But don't think the Saints have the resources to get into the second round.
Would you put Carolina as a day 1 winner with Minnesota and St.Louis? seems like those are the only 2 teams analysts are talking about when it comes to winners
I put Carolina as my winner of the first day in grades I posted on blog a little bit ago.
Ok so now here is the current list of our "Swag D Team" members: Spoon, Asanta, Trufant, and Decoud. Am I missing anyone?
You might be able to include William Moore in that group.
Hey Pat do you see the Panthers taking a receiver somewhere in the draft or do they feel that is not a priority right now?
Think they've stockpiled a bunch of No. 3 or 4 WRs. Only way I saw them taking one was if it was someone that eventually could take over for Smith as No. 1. Think that had to come in first round. So probably not.
Dimitrioff said on local radio this morning that "the door is far from closed" with Abraham.
Well, TD is an honest guy, so we'll see.
I know the Panthers haven't made any big splashes in FA this year, but I think they have brought in a couple of guys with potential to contribute. Do you see Hixon as a legit No.2/3 WR?
Think Hixon could be a nice No. 3. They like LaFell as No. 2.
To backtrack for a second, based on your perception of his rehab and what the Bucs gave up to get him compared to what they could've gotten last night, finals thoughts on the Revis trade as it currently stands?
I think they got a good deal.
Was a bit disappointed that the Bucs didn't try to trade back into the first to try and get Trufant or Richardson, who went well after their projected slots. Do you think it was a simple matter of trade value, or were they just not sold on them?
Don't know for sure. They might have tried to trade back into first but not been able to find a taker.
Do you think the Bucs will take Hankins or Jenkins if they're available in the second round?
Think either is possible. Like Hankins slightly better.
Is it possible for the Bucs to select Tyrann Mathieu with their second round pick? They need all the help they can get in the secondary.
Think that's a little early for him.
Confidence Holmes/Johnson will be able to start in place of Clabo next season?
Not sure. Offseason isn't over yet. Could see one more guy brought into the mix.
I see you gave the Saints a B for grabbing the believed best safety in the draft. I just don't get that thinking. The Saints had the two worst safeties in the league last year, statistically, and people are boo-hooing this pick? You say they should have gone after a pass rusher. Well, if you would have done your homework and analyzed what the Saints had then you would know that Martez Wilson and Junior Gallette took a quarter of the defensive snaps and still had 5 and 6 sacks for the season. Now that they're in a 3-4 they'll be getting MUCH more snaps. The Saints will be just fine with their pass rush. The Saints needed a safety more than they needed a pass rusher.
I am well aware of Wilson and Galette. But still would have liked to see them get one more pass rusher. I'm not bashing the Vaccaro pick by any means. I think he will help them out. I gave it a B. Can't give everyone As.
IF Teo is available any way the Bucs take him?
Not ruling it out, if he's still there at 43.
Would drafting a QB in one of the first 4 rounds set the Bucs up for QB controversy?
No, I think they could take one in third or fourth and it would be clear that Freeman's the starter for now.
Pat, Ted Ginn could become a huge offensive weapon for carolina dont you think? he has the speed to stretch the field
I think he's a very good return man, but not sure he'll contribute all that much as a WR.
Pat please tell me that my Panthers will not take Teo with the 2nd round pick today.
Think Carolina's in pretty good shape at LB.
Wouldn't drafting a QB set the Bucs up for all the distractions that come with a QB controversy?
Not if it's in the third or fourth round. Then, the distractions would come only if Freeman really struggles.
What was the biggest day 1 surprise for you, Pat?
From an NFC South perspective, probably that Star lasted as long as he did.
And this is coming from someone who really wanted Jarvis Jones.
I said I thought they should pick Jarvis Jones, yes. Did say I wanted that to happen. I'm not a fan. Again, I didn't say the Vaccaro pick was bad at all. I just stated my opinion that I thought they might have been better off with another position. But it's their pick and they get paid well to make it.
Dan, are you serious? I'm pretty sure I've written more on the Falcons than any team in the last year -- because they were winning.
What was the atmosphere like last night at One Buc? Did the bucs even attempt to get into the 1st round or were they not totally sold on anyone?
It's not like I was in the war room. I was in the media room, which is just a bunch of reporters sitting around and watching the draft and waiting. They might have tried to trade but not had a taker.
Hey pat, what number you think Revis will be if he cant be 24?
I think Revis has the resources to make sure he's 24.
If they are all available do you think the Bucs would take Ertz, Hunt, or the cornerback from Boise State?
I don't think they could go wrong on any of them. But I'd say Ertz.
Hey Pat, what round does Mathieu get taken? Sorry if already previously stated.
Fourth or fifth would be my guess.
I know as an organization the Bucs expect a playoff birth, as a fan should I have the same expectations?
That's up to you. But shouldn't you want the best-case scenario?
Do the saints make a trade of Ivory or Roman Harper (or combo) to get into the 2nd round?
Ivory's not going to be enough to get them a second rounder. Harper would be almost impossible to trade because he's got a big contract.
Did Gettleman break a record for turning in his pick the fastest? He must have been salivating as Star slipped down the board.
Pretty close to it.
In a deep safety class, what do you think about Carolina targeting a safety with their day 2 pick?
I'd be in favor of it. They need safety help.
That doesn't answer my question, though. Of course I want the best case, the question is what should I expect. You are the Insider, I thought Id ask for your take: do you think they'll make the playoffs?
I think they have a shot. They've assembled some pretty good talent. But it's all going to come down to Freeman. I think he can be consistently good, but we don't know for sure yet.
Pat, what do you about the Falcons taking Xavier gooden or Sean porter for somehelp at linebacker
I wouldn't mind seeing any LB that could have a shot at covering a TE.
With Vacarro taken, do you think the Saints release Harper?
They'd take a big cap hit if they released him. Best approach might be asking him to take a pay cut.
Any chance that atlanta takes another CB in the 2nd round? Im seeing your boy Taylor fall in a couple of mock drafts.
Wouldn't rule it out.
Do you see the Falcons taking a QB late? 5th round or so?
No, I think Dominique Davis is their project QB. Think they'll bring in a veteran at some point.
Pat, who on the Saints is going to rush the passer? Do they have any chance of signing anybody or do they have to try and strike gold in the 3rd or 4th round?
Galette and Wilson, maybe.
Lets say Freeman is inconsistent again this year. Is There any QB in this draft that would be able to takeover in 2014? or do the Bucs look for a free agent or trade?
Manuel was only QB in this draft I really liked. So I think in that scenario, they'd just deal with it next year.
Falcons get DE Alex Okafor at 58. Mark it down.
I just wrote it down CC. That's not a bad call.
who should be more excited about the addition of Star, Johnson and Hardy or Kuechly?
All of the above.
Pat can you please call Rich McKay and let him know that I would love for the BUCS to draft today in the 2nd round.I can help the BUCS make the playoff.
You are aware that Rich McKay is now employed by the Falcons?
What round do you think lattimore will go? What are his chances of staying in the south?
Maybe around fifth or sixth round. I think Atlanta is one team that could afford to bring him in and give him a red-shirt year.
Carolina also has the most hideous back 4 in the NFCS. Ryan, Brees and even Freeman are salivating.
True, at the moment.
Just a couple more questions. I need to run to get my computer fixed before tonight. Have been using my backup computer for this chat.
Dimitroff was on the radio this AM and said the door was not closed on Abe. I think it is on Abe's end however... but you never know.
Yep, I think it is all on Abe's end.
Is there any chance the Bucs would go after Abraham?
There were some early rumblings about Bucs having interest. Think there could be still if they don't add a DE fairly early in the draft.
Any word on Matt Ryan's extension? Have not heard anything lately, a change in the day of "unnamed sources"
It will come sometime after the draft. Dimitroff has been a bit busy lately.
if wilson, bray, jones and dysert are on the board who to you take if your mark dominik
I'm not sold on any of them. If I had to take one, probably Jones.
All right, I'm going to cut it off there. Thanks to all for stopping by. Join us tonight. We'll be chatting live, starting at 6 p.m. ET. Module for that chat will appear on the blog sometime before 6.
