Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (1:02 PM)

Hello, everybody. Glad to be with you. Coming to you from the Florham Park bunker. Let's rock and roll.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Rich I usually reserve my judgment of the drafts till the season. Granted I'm usually a little happy or a little upset when it comes to the pick but I have never ever screamed and yelled at the TV during the draft like I did last night.... How in the world do they think Milinar will equal the value of Revis and how do they choose Richardson over Star?!?!!?!?! How do they not take Jarvis Jones?!?!?! Or atleast Eifert?!

Rich Cimini
  (1:06 PM)

Calm down, Mike. Milliner is a good player. Is he Revis? No, but there's a $13M per year difference in salary. Richardson is a good prospect, but I wonder about scheme fit. I thought they should've gone offense at 13.

Chris (Cape Cod)

Rich, I know they said these were two of top guys on their board (what team doesn't say that?) but how do you have so many needs and come away with 2 guys who don't play one of those need positions? Even though some of their targets were gone, why not Warmack and Eifert? Why not give Sanchez a chance at least?

Rich Cimini
  (1:09 PM)

Fair points, Chris. You're right, every team says it was the "best available player." But, guess what? Teams adjust their boards based on need. The Jets had Austin among their top 2, and that's absurd - a 5-8 receiver? Gimma a break. Milliner is a really good player. I can't argue that. You can't pass on a top-5 talent.

Bryan (CT)

Wouldn't Chance Warmack have been the logical pick at #9?! I'm very disappointed having passed him over for an injury-prone corner that lacks lock-down skills.

Rich Cimini
  (1:10 PM)

He doesn't lack lockdown skills. His ball skills aren't elite, but he can cover. He has missed 1 game in his career. You're going nuts over passing a guard? Warmack is good, but you can't get crazy because your favorite team passed on a guard.

tony C (Rye Brook)

Thank you for taking my question. I am hopeful the 2nd and 3rd round picks address the safety and TE positions. I believe their decision in RD 2 will be based on who SF takes as they may also be going TE or S in the 2nd. I feel they will go QB in RD 4 or next year.

Rich Cimini
  (1:11 PM)

TE is in play. Ertz and Kelce are the names to watch. S a possibility. They showed interest in Jonathan Cyprien, so there's that. QB will be the big story. I'd be surprised if they pick one.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich,They need to land 4-5 starters or players that will have an impact in this draft otherwise it's a bad job. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:12 PM)

It's hard to get 4 or 5, but I'd say they need 2 or 3, for sure. Milliner and Richardson will play a lot, although I'm not sure they'll be listed as starters. They need a starter in Round 2, not a QB.

Andrew (Hartford CT)

You thought Star L. was going to be a better fit with the Jets, as you guessed he might end up with them. Do you think Richardson a bad fit?

Rich Cimini
  (1:14 PM)

I was hearing they wanted a DT. Obviously, I got the wrong guy. Richardson has more upside that Star, but Richardson was a 4-3 guy. Then again, so were Coples and Wilkerson. I agree, it's a curious choice. Made Rex happy, though.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Do you think the jets kind of screwed themselves letting it known they were interested in Tavon Austin?

Rich Cimini
  (1:14 PM)

They didn't hold up a sign that said, "We're interested in Austin." But, obviously, the Rams knew they liked him.

Tanner (Chapel Hill, NC)

I personally think the Jets should NOT select a quarterback this year, but most of the second-round mocks disagree with me on that one. What do you think the chances are of them taking a QB with the 39th pick?

Rich Cimini
  (1:15 PM)

I doubt it. I think they WANT people to think they're drafting a QB, perhaps motivating a team to trade with them.

Billy (Eastchester, NY)

Rich, lets get right to it: were the Jets caught off guard by the way the draft unfolded last night? It really looked like they panicked at 13 and were trying desperately to trade down.

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

Yes, they were trying to trade down, maybe with the 49ers. To that, I ask? If Richardson was the 4th guy on your board, why would you consider trading down?

John (NY)

If Austin was there at 9, would the Jets have taken him?

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

Would've been a discussion, for sure. Austin vs. Milliner.

Mike (Sunny Hicksville)

What are the odds the Jets trade up to get Nassib or Smith? If I have to watch Sanchez for another year I will be sick

Rich Cimini
  (1:18 PM)

The Jets like Nassib and Smith, but you need a really strong conviction to take a QB at 39. You're basically anointing him as your QB of the future.

Paul (Boston)

Everyone seems to be ripping the Jets for going Defense in Round 1 and claiming that it is a sign of Rex being in charge still - what say ye?

Rich Cimini
  (1:19 PM)

What, didn't you read my column today?

Ed (Queens Village)

Was Dee Milliner taking believing they not sold on Kyle Wilson or they want 3 CB's to play vs rest of NFL? Don't understand Sheldon Richardson pick why not take Geno Smith, WR, TE, or OL? Jets do need offense help. What do Jets do rest of weekend?

Rich Cimini
  (1:19 PM)

Wilson best suited to nickel back. Let's face it, you need 3 competent corners nowadays, especially with all the spread offenses.

Rachel (Hattiesburg)

Rich, please explain why the Jets drafted Richardson and who's decision was it? Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (1:20 PM)

Let's be clear: Idzik is calling the shots. He has final say. But he obviously listens to Rex.

Rob (Montclair, NJ)

Any progress on the Chris Ivory situation? And if not, is 2 and 3 the time to look for another RB option?

Rich Cimini
  (1:21 PM)

The clock is ticking. It might be time to go elsewhere. The Jets really like Lacy. Ball, not so much.

Tom (Long Island)

I think most people assume the Jets will go offense at #39. I'm hoping for Zach Ertz or Geno Smith, but what are some other names we should keep an eye on there?

Rich Cimini
  (1:22 PM)

I'm not so sure Geno makes it to 39. He must have received word that someone will pick him right away because he decided to stick around in NYC.

Dan (NY)

This offense is going to be unwatchable this year. Why not draft Geno, have him play/learn the second part of the year (give fans something to be excited about), and then try to win next year?

Rich Cimini
  (1:22 PM)

But what if he's not good?

Rob S (New York, NY)

Justin Hunter in the 2nd Larry Warford/Barrett Jones in the 3rd Travis Kelce/Jordan Reed in the 4th Trade 5th round pick to NO for Chris Ivory Thoughts??

Rich Cimini
  (1:23 PM)

They like Kelce. I had him in my mock, going to the Jets in the 3rd round. Maybe he goes at 39.

Rich Cimini
  (1:23 PM)

They like Kelce. I had him in my mock, going to the Jets in the 3rd round. Maybe he goes at 39.

Eric G (Woodcliff Lake, NJ)

Hi Rich,Any sense on what kind of offers the Jets received to trade back from 9 or 13? Sure feels like they could have dropped back (especially at 13) and landed a similar prospect to Richardson.

Rich Cimini
  (1:23 PM)

They said Richardson was No. 4 on their board. How could they have picked a similar prospect?

Thomas (Queens)

Seen a lot of talk about the Jets using more 4-3 next season, where would players like Wilkerson, Coples, Richardson, Harris, Pace, Barnes, etc. fit in this scheme?

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

Rex acknowledged they could use more 4-3. They have to, or else the Richardson pick makes zero sense. Lots of flexibility now, but here's the deal: they're all 4-3 DTs, they don't have any 4-3 DEs unless you put Pace/Barnes in down position.

steve (SoCal)

The 13th pick surprise you? As bad as the critics are saying?

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

He's a good player. Big upside. Just a weird scheme fit for the Jets and a luxury pick.

Aaron (Leesburg, VA)

Is Justin Hunter a possibility for the Jets in Round 2?

Rich Cimini
  (1:26 PM)

I think so. Great size, would be a nice fit in a West Coast offense. Beware: Dropped a lot of balls.

Will (New York)

Rich, Thanks for taking the time. What are the chances the Jets go after a pass rusher like Margus Hunt or Tank if they are still on the board in the 3rd? If not what other options would they explore

Rich Cimini
  (1:27 PM)

Don't see Hunt as a fit. They need a SPEED rusher. Consider: Of their 6 highest picks over the last 3 yrs, 4 have been interior DLM -- Wilkerson, Ellis, Coples and Richardson.

Rocky Klever (NY)

For all the people screaming about Milliner, if the Jets had passed on Dee, I'd wager the farm that they'd be bellowing equally loudly that the Jets "Skipped the chance to nab a Revis replacement/a top five talent." Right, Rich?

Rich Cimini
  (1:28 PM)

Are you saying Jets fans are fickle?

Billy (Boston)

Rich, 2 questions. Any thought that the Austin noise was a smokescreen? Also the Jets move to a 4-3 (which the pick would indicate), how does that effect the LBs? Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (1:30 PM)

Austin wasn't a smokescreen. They really liked him. For real. It won't be a permanent switch to the 4-3. They will remain multiple, but could sprinkle in more 4-3...Harris at Mike, Davis at Will and Pace/Barnes at Sam.

Tommy (Floral Park)

Is WR really that big of a need for the Jets? Isn't (a healthy) Santonio Holmes, Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, and (possibly) Braylon Edwards enough to work with? Personally, I would rather see them add a big TE.

Rich Cimini
  (1:31 PM)

Holmes is gone in a year, so factor that in. And I agree, they need a big TE -- who can run. And catch.

J (NY)

Did you hear any inside info to make you think the Jets liked Richardson more than Lotulelei?

Rich Cimini
  (1:34 PM)

I think a lot of people liked Richardson better. Better athlete, more upside. Plays hard. Star known to take plays off. Heart issue was a concern.

Larry (South Florida)

Do you feel we can re-hab Sanchez' QB abilities...or has that ship sailed and we need to look elsewhere?

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

I don't think the ship has sailed, but it's getting ready to leave the harbor.

Charlie (NJ)

2 out of their top 4 with the 9th and 13th overall seems like a successful first round. Who are the next 5 on their board for Rd 2?

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

To clarify: It was 2 of THEIR top 4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Marco (Whitehouse Station, Nj)

It would be insanity to pick a QB in the next 2 rounds. They'd STILL have no WR, TE, G - so who is the new guy going to throw to? And besides, these guys who available are no better than what we already have. Better wait and get a developmental guy like Dysert later on. Agree?

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

Agree. If they draft a QB, they might as well send off Sanchez.

Dexter (PDX)

Jets 2nd round QB picks have been Kellen Clemens and Browning Nagle.

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

Are you hinting at something?

Dave (Albany, NY)

If Geno and Nassib are on the board for the Jets' second round pick...who do they take? Why? Also what does this mean for McElroy, Tebow, and Garrard?

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

If Geno and Nassib are on the board, they'll trade the pick. Just watch.

Louie (Tampa, FL)

People need to chill, you can't fill all the holes the Jets have in one draft/offseason. We drafted two high impact players who will help immediately on the defensive side of the ball. I'd expect an offensive heavy days 2 & 3 - in a perfect world Rich, who would they like to be there at pick 39?

Rich Cimini
  (1:38 PM)

I think they'd like the next Ronnie Lott or the next Tony Gonzalez to be there.

Nick (Honolulu)

For three years I have been hearing that the Jets are going to draft a pass rusher? Is this ever going to happen?

Rich Cimini
  (1:39 PM)

Pass rusher? Who needs to put pressure on the QB? Seriously, you're right. But I can tell you this: They wouldn't have taken Mingo at 9. They were lukewarm on him. Jarvis Jones, too risky.

Dave (Albany, NY)

What do you think of the Jets drafting Keenan Allen at WR in Round Two?

Rich Cimini
  (1:40 PM)

I had him in my mock draft.

Mike (NY)

Rich, I don't understand how you or anyone can say that these picks mean Rex is still in charge. Who did you want them to take on offense? This is one of the weakest offensive drafts in the history. You can say the TE but he fell all the way to 21 so he couldn't be that great. TE generally aren't taken in the first round. We made two solid picks in Millner and Richardson that were building block picks for the future. The Jets are a rebuilding team, plan and simple.

Rich Cimini
  (1:40 PM)

I agree with most of what you said. I would've considered Eifert at 13.

Chris (Ohio)

Rich why are you emphasizing the Jets to take someone like Corradelle Patterson over just following the draft board? We already have a project in Stephen Hill. I don't understand the lambasting. Shouldn't you appreciate that we finally have a GM that doesn't make rash decisions, values draft picks and models himself off other good GMs in this league?

Rich Cimini
  (1:41 PM)

Did I lambaste them? I merely pointed out that they went heavy on defense, ignoring their terrible offense. That's a fact.

Dave Stollap (Albany, New York)

Hey Rich...Just wanted to know what you think would happen to the current QBs if Nassib or Geno is drafted. Also, do you think if Geno is gone, but Nassib is still on the board at #39, then the Jets will get Nassib? Thanks for your time

Rich Cimini
  (1:42 PM)

The Jets can't cut Sanchez. If they do it before June 1, they'd take a $17M cap hit -- $5M more than he's counting now.

Marco (Whitehouse Station, NJ)

Rich, I LOVE your work, btw. Geno Smith sure showed what he is with that bitter tweet the other day and storming out last night before it was over claiming he's done and going home. An immature kid who can't handle adversity (besides being a mistake-prone fumbler with small hands.) Do you think he drops down to the end of the 2nd?

Rich Cimini
  (1:43 PM)

No, I think he'll go somewhere in the first 10 picks of the 2nd.

Rich Cimini
  (1:44 PM)

Well, hate to cut it short, guys, but things are picking up here in Florham. We have a press conf with Milliner and Richardson coming up, so I have to bolt. Thanks for the questions and keep it tuned to ESPN for your draft coverage. How's that for a shill? Take care. Rich
