Any particular reason Tony Jefferson went undrafted? Questions about work ethic have any validity?
What I have heard is that Tony went undrafted because of his poor combine performance. That's really what it comes down to. 5-11 safeties who run 4.7 40s aren't attractive to NFL teams, regardless of their college production. In spite of all that, I was still stunned Tony didn't get drafted. But that's the explanation we've been hearing.
I'm baffled that Tony Jefferson didn't get drafted... But glad that Jones went to Pittsburg. Always thought he'd fit well as a sub for Big Dirty-Roethlisberger.
I agree, seems like a good fit. Landry has the same QB coach -- George Whitfield -- as Ben and Whitney Hand and Carlee Roethlisberger were really good friends playing college bball together. Couple that with the fact that there will be no pressure on Landry starting out, and I think he could thrive there. We'll see.
will drew allen be able to help syracuse out? Whats the scouting report on him?
I think so. At least that's what Drew and the Syracuse coaching staff believe. Drew is a big, strong prototypical-styled QB that can also run a little bit if he has to. Drew was pretty good in OU's spring game last year, but after he got beat out by Blake Bell, the writing was on the wall.
Tony Jefferson - What happened? Bad attitude? Poor habits? Bad Interviews?
Knowing Tony, I can't imagine he interviewed poorly, at least poorly enough to warrant him going undrafted. The kid played through various injuries in his career, including a bum ankle late in 2012. I don't think people ever viewed him as a cancer on the team. What's left? Combine. He would have been wise to have not run there, if he really was ailing with that hamstring. That had to have been what doomed him.
TJ = slow = undrafed free agent.
Do you think an active football player will come out of the closet like Jason Collins did today anytime soon?
Yes, but I think it will happen in the pros before it happens in college.
I can't believe Stoops has not commented on Dilfers assessment of him and his offensive coaching staff....if you were Stoops how would you respond?
Stoops would probably respond if he had any media availability scheduled. He'll probably take that opportunity to just let it go. I thought Dilfer was way over the top (OU averaged 34 ppg last year) in his assessment.
Trent Dilfer had some really tough things to say about OU, specifically the play-calling. Do you agree with any of the things that Dilfer said? If so, which parts?
I thought OU's receivers were really good last year. I mean, without them, OU would have gone 7-5. So I don't understand Trent calling that group "brutal."
This chat would not be complete without me asking this: will Quincey Russell play for the Sooners?
It actually is not complete until someone completely blindsides Gabe Lynn.
What do you think of Trent Dilfer's comments about OU's spitball offense?
I've given some of my thoughts. Let's do this --- what did you all think of Dilfer's comments?
Of those "brutal" receivers two of them got drafted!
Yeah, and another one is going to be drafted next year in Jalen Saunders.
hard to imagine saban or miles or switzer would let something like that go without saying anything
Stoops has never been shy about firing back at people.
Please tell me your not gong to avoid the elephant in the room which is Dilfer carpet bombing OU's offense? What are your thoughts? accruate? unfair?
Thought it was unfair. To me, the defense was way more "brutal" than anything the offense did or didn't do.
So, if we get a good TE or actually use a TE correctly we won't have a brutal offense?
That's what Gruden and evidently Dilfer believe.
Dilfer's insane. Without OU's offense dropping 30+ per game, it's a bad, bad year for the Sooners. Let's talk about the D.
I mean, without that "brutal" offense, OU loses at West Virginia by three touchdowns, and gets run out of its own stadium by OSU.
Hey did you hear what Dilfer said? I kid, I kid. Who gets more touches a game, Finch or Millard?
Dilfer has hijacked the chat! Millard, not even close.
I think most NFL guru's don't like our offense. I personally hate the Belldozer. But it works
Looks like all our questions about Dilfer came to you at the same time. Okay, now it's time to pile on Gabe Lynn.
Of all the people that deserve to be criticized at OU, Trent Dilfer picked the least culpable for our bad season. This group of WR is easily one of the best group of WR to have ever played for Stoops.
It was the best position group of the entire team.
Anything on demontre hurst
Signed an FA deal with the Bears.
As far as Dilfer goes, his success at assessing offenses is roughly equivalent to his success behind center in Tampa Bay.
I know it's easy to slam Dilfer's credibility by bashing his playing career, but it's his job to give his opinion, and he gave it.
Whats your prediction for the highest drafted sooner next year, and what round. Colvin in the late 2nd?
Colvin, late first round.
Dilfer was dead on right about the play calling, and he was probably referring to the three games against good defenses, where the play calling was brutal...
Yep, that's a fair counter argument. OU's offense WAS brutal against K-State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M. Reminded me of the way the Ravens beat down New England's passing game in the playoffs. There was no real running threat or a threat of passes being completed over the top. It's clear OU wants to be able to do both in this new era. We'll see. But that was a definite weakness that got exposed by those Ds.
Did I read you correctly in last weeks chat? Did you say that our DL out played our OL in many of the closed scrimmages or am I just completely misunderstanding what you said?
You must have misunderstood.
Safety is always been the key to a Mike Stoops defense. Do you think Franks can win the job. Love his athleticism and physicality at that position.
He can, but the odds are against it, especially with Hatari Byrd set to join Ahmad Thomas in this freshman class. But I was encouraged by Franks in the spring game. He'll need to do it for more than the couple weeks he did late in the spring. But he definitely can help.
Of the Sooners that got drafted or signed FA contracts, who do you expect will make their NFL teams' final cut
Lane Johnson, Landry Jones and Kenny Stills.
OU had a really rough draft. Players that should have come out early (Landry Jones) stuck around and really took a financial hit. Players that should have stayed in school ( Tony Jefferson, Kenny Stills and Tom Wort) left early and also took a huge hit financially. Hopefully next years class makes better decisions.
Well, that starts with Colvin, who could be a first rounder next year. Not sure he would have been this past draft.
The fact of the matter is the OU's offense was supposed to the be the strength of the team going into last year. No one was expecting the D to be anything but average. All I asked is that the strength of the team carry us and in big games against KSU and ND AT HOME, it choked. Plan and simple. It choked for the exact reason Dilfer pointed out. The offense did degrade to a spit ball offense filled with 3 yard passed and wr screens behind the line of scrimmage. Coaches were absolutely to blame. The only place Dilfer lost credibility in his comments were in regard to the WR group..
Right, but him saying what he did about the WRs makes me wonder if he really assessed OU thoroughly. Hard to see how anyone who followed this team last year could rip the WRs.
Is Tony Jefferson regretting not coming back to school?
Wouldn't you be?
Couldn't agree more w/ SoonerTJ. Dilfer only sees tape of the impact games, and in those big games OU/Stoops/Heupel had terrible game plans. However, to call the receiver group "brutal" was absolutely ridiculous. Once he got on his soap box the rant became excessive, and that kind of thing can be damaging to a program in the eyes of recruiting and fan base.
Guessing many, many recruits watch the NFL Draft.
Stacy McGee has a shot to make the gameday roster given the Raiders lack of defensive lineman among others things?
How well did Blake Bell throw the ball in the spring?
Up and down, but finished with a strong spring game.
Jake, the lack of use of Trey Millard's talent is almost as ridiculous as what I said. He destroyed Texas and produced one of the best CFB photos of the year! How many touches did he get the next game? FOUR
4 is what he's averaged per game over the past two years.
OU to the Big 10?
Anything is possible, but I don't see it. OU would not want to leave rivals Texas, OkState or risk losing access to the fertile recruiting grounds in Texas.
Splitting up OU and OSU would be a political nightmare, too.
It's months away, yet besides the Texas game, how important is the game in South Bend with Notre Dame to the players?
It's a game they're all looking forward to, whether they admit it or not. Going to South Bend is a special opportunity.
Bob Stoops fires his OL coaches because they are not getting it done. Two months latter Bob touts said coaches for their development of Lane Johnson. Did I get this right?
You have that right.
Were you surprised to see Dominique get a shot with the Seahawks? I was surprised to see David King and Stacey McGee get drafted. Any updates on other Sooners to get FA contracts?
When it comes to the 6th and 7th rounds, you're throwing darts anyway. So why not take a chance on someone like McGee, who underachieved in college but might have upside. Last I checked, here were the OU undrafted free agent signings (Jefferson, Arizona; Hurst, Bears; Whaley, Seattle; Harris, Arizona; Wort, Titans; Walker, Carolina; Way, Bears)
I got to the playoffs my rookie season. The Jets never gave me a legitimate chance. Is it unfair to be perceived the way that I am? Or was my success in Denver overrated?
Eh, not sure you were given a chance in New York, and I don't know how you can call the success in Denver overrated (though maybe fluky). But the skills haven't really translated in the eyes of NFL evaluators. Don't really know what else to say.
I think the lack of use with Millard speaks to the lack of patience with Heupel
As little as they are used, I'm shocked Finch and/or Millard haven't transferred by now. You?
Millard, no; Finch, maybe
OU to C-USA?
Sure, why not
One of the most interesting things from this years draft. OSU, NSU and ECU all had the same amount of players drafted. And TU had none.
Shows how much talent OSU has coming back.
BC answered this question in the forum but I didn't hear your thoughts. In your opinion what is the BIGGEST problem right now with OU recruiting? Weakness of the Big 12? Lame uniforms?
Uniforms are a small piece of the pie. Because of its success across the board, the SEC is a juggernaut at the moment. Hard for OU -- and anyone else, for that matter -- to recruit against that. I mean, the SEC just had 32 players get taken in the first 3 rounds of the draft, compared to the Big 12's 8. Recruits, like Deondre Clark, pay attention to that stuff.
I agree with Trent Dilfer. When you under use a player like Trey Millard and do not use another one at all in Roy Finch, you deserve to get ripped apart for your play-calling
How long/short is Heupel's leash as a play caller? He is absolutely to blame for not getting the ball in the hands of Millard and Finch, establishing a tone in the run game, getting the ball downfield, and those stupid play calling placards.
Not very short. He was just given a 3-year deal and a huge raise.
How many ESPN 300 players do you think we have a legit shot of landing this year?
Hard for me to predict when the ESPN 300 hasn't been released yet.
No way in hell I would trade any of our TEs over a fourth WR like Sterling Shepard.
Reason they went 4 WRs last year.
I think Dilfer's comments were spot on with the exception of the WR's. OU may have scored a lot of points but that was in the video game world of the Big 12. When OU needed points in big games they piddled down their leg. Some of that fall to LJ but some of that falls squarely on Stoops and staff. I prefer to blame the guy making 5 mllion than a college kid..
Those "brutal" WR's Trent Dilfer talked about went in the 5th and 6th round and that doesn't even include Ryan Broyles going in the 2nd round last year. Dilfer might need to shut his piehole.
WR has been the least of OU's worries the last two years.
Did not hear Dilfer's comments, and don't agree about our receivers being poor, but how different was his criticism of the playcalling from anything you heard all year in regards to Heupel on your chat and correspondence?
Dilfer must read this chat!
I think dilfer was right on with the exception of the receivers....we scored 19, 13, and 13 against quality teams.
When is Les Miserables 2 coming out?
How much do you think Dilfer/Grudent's comments will impact OU's recruting? The Sooners have struggled enough as it is landing the usual 5-STAR guys they're accustomed to historically?
It doesn't help. Those are tangible things opponents can negatively recruit against OU with.
Jake, Of Course I read this chat (and others). How else do you think I come up with my analysis for TV?
I think you can criticize our offense last year. But, he was too general and way off on the rest.
I struggled in college but entered the draft anyways. I didn't get drafted. Is anyone other than me surprised?
You were really surprised?
Nothing against Landry Jones, but I believe my team wasted a pick. We desperately need help at WR and OL, not a back up QB. Our priority should be protecting our $100 million investment or adding weapons for him to use. With that said, I do think Jones is a quality player.
Backup QB has kind of been an adventure for Pitt the last couple years. Nothing wrong with taking a QB in the 5th round some had going a lot higher the year before.
When is OU off the NCAA penalties in football and basket ball?
Probation ends November 9, 2014.
Been a quiet year for OU and not renewing Scolies, any surprises/rumors?
Seems quiet because this time last year, Jaz, Franks and Q-Hayes all had the hammer come down on them.
Do you think Stoops will use Jefferson as an example of why not to leave early?
Down the line, maybe. Right now, Stoops doesn't have to say a word. Proof is in the pudding. Players aren't blind.
I think Dilfer's comments on Heupel's play calling are right on, though not about OU's receivers. Does it seem like a make or break year for Heupel's play calling role to you? Do you think OU is about as good as any team in the county based on overall talent on the offensive side of the ball?
1. Considering Heupel just got a three-year deal, no I don't think this is make-or-break in terms of his job security; 2. No, I count several teams better than OU offensively going into next season, including the team residing 60 miles to the north.
Guesses for which incoming freshmen will redshirt? Ford? KJ Young?
Better way to look at it is, who will NOT redshirt: Ford, Byrd, Ward, Dimon, Taylor, Thomas, Cavil all strong possibilities.
Do you think Stoops will use Landry as an example of why to leave early?
Would Landry have been picked higher had he come out last year? I mean, he was pretty dreadful at the end of last season.
Wouldn't Geno Smith have been a better pick for my offense than Matt Barkley?
Matt Barkley in the 4th round > Geno Smith in the 1st or 2nd
Another ESPN NFL analyst is calling out OU's offense. Dilfer held nothing back.
Who can blame Jefferson and Wort for coming out after that steaming pile of poop that was OU's defensive scheme?
Hard to blame Wort. Shannon would have probably started over him this season.
Your way to early prediction of OU's season 10-2? 9-3? What is the game your not putting a wager on? Not that you gamble, but say a friendly wager for say, your wifes cupcakes for your friends wife's cupcakes.
I'm skeptical about OU's chances in South Bend or Stillwater.
Will I be calling plays in the NFL one day?
The question is, "Will I be head coach at Oklahoma one day?"
Vick is a southpaw, so is Lane Johnson to play LT or RT for the Eagles ?
Is Vick for sure gonna be the QB there?
I think Heupel will be a good play caller one day, but he is a long way off from that know. What would you like to see him do differently ?
Get the ball to Millard more.
What was Tom Wort thinking? I still don't understand it..
He knew he wasn't going to get drafted. He just wanted out.
I don't like what I'm fixing to say but with getting torched last year on defense, poor showing at the Draft(defensively) and our current lack of star defensive players and recruits, I think alot of High School kids might be in a wait and see approach with committing to the Sooners. What do you think ?
The elite ones, maybe.
Seems like a lot of "Heupel's issues" (outside of no TE plays), are personnel related. Does that really fall on him?
Last I checked, he's never been charged with recruiting tight ends.
You really believe that Vick will be unseated by Barkeley in his rookie year?
Not necessarily, but when was the last time Vick lasted an entire season?
OU's new pistolbone offense is going to take college football by storm next year!
what are the chances that the next oklahoma qb will compare to sam bradford
Heupel won't be head coach at Oklahoma if I have anything to do with it...
Thanks for the heads up on T. Jeff. I hope he catches on and proves people wrong. Is Alex Ross healthy?
He had concussion issues in the spring, but I wasn't led to believe they were serious, so he should be fine.
I know Kenny Stills is upset being drafted so low, but doesn't having the opportunity to catch passes from Drew Bees, in a high powered offense, soften the blow somewhat?
Plus the Saints use like 9 WRs. Stills is in about the best possible situation he could have hoped for.
Did Tom Wort sign with anyone? I got to think him leaving was a terrible decision, but at least he got his degree and can join the workforce!
With the Titans. Hoping to make the team as a guy who will sacrifice his body on kickoff coverage.
Speaking of Sam Bradford, he has to be happy with the Rams draft.
Great Rams draft. Love Austin and Olgetree.
TJ should have come back.. If Wort would have come back his stock would have dropped even further. He would have been a card runner at the draft next year..
Card runner, now that would have been a plummeted draft stock.
As the Big 10 is doing away from playing warm up games against (Division II) smaller schools, do you see OU doing the same with upcoming scheduals?
OU is actually on the cutting edge there. Sooners have home and homes lined up with Notre Dame, Tennessee, Ohio State, LSU and Nebraska over the next decade.
Stills will be a 1,000 yard receiver in 3 years. Write that down...
Why couldn't Heupel recruit TEs? Or OLs? Or any offensive position for that matter. He is after all in charge of the offense. If he's unhappy with the results, why not get out there and do it yourself?
Coordinators usually have lighter recruiting duties. Plus, Heupel is in charge of recruiting QBs, which is kind of important.
The positive part of Dilfer's comments is that someone actually took up for LJ. That doesn't happen often.
Gruden did, too.
That's all the time we have today. Thanks to Trent Dilfer, this chat flew by. I'll be back next Monday, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week.
