Chat with Jamison Hensley

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:02 PM)

Hello all. Thanks for stopping by for the weekly chat. I will try to answer as many questions as possible. I have a radio interview at 2:30, so I will have to leave at that time.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Landry Jones will play in Games this Season for Pittsburgh?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:02 PM)

Only if Roethlisberger and Gradkowski are hurt. In other words, not very likely.

Austin (CT)

How are the Ravens planning on replacing Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard, and Ray Lewis?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:03 PM)

Matt Elam, Michael Huff and Arthur Brown/Rolando McClain.

Anthony (Cleveland)

Do you think the Bengals would use Orson Charles in a lot of full back options and not keep a full back on the team?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:03 PM)

Charles was more of a pass-catching TE coming out of Georgia. So, I don't really see him as a primary fullback.

Anthony (Cleveland)

What was Taylor Mays' issue? Could he not cover anyone, or could he just not keep himself in control and get himself in the right place on D?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:04 PM)

Coverage has always been a problem for him.

cp (reno)

I was surprised the Steelers took Bell that early. What do you think?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:05 PM)

I was surprised, too. They had medical concern with Eddie Lacy and had Le'Veon Bell as their top-rated back. There have been a lot of varying opinions on him. He is really the key to the Steelers' draft.

Brian (Valley Forge, PA)

Jamison, obviously the fans have been worried about the Jimmy Haslam situation since it erupted. How have the players and coaches been handling it and/or reacting to it?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:05 PM)

I didn't run into any players when I was in Cleveland covering the draft. The coaches and front office staff looked like they were conducting business as usual. Obviously, it's a concern. But they didn't show any.

dan (lynchburg va)

whats the biggest draft surprise from the afc north?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:07 PM)

Hands down, TE Tyler Eifert in the first round to the Bengals. I don't believe anyone saw this coming. But it showed that the Bengals weren't going to pass up a player with so much value even though he didn't address a need.

Chuck (Turtle Creek Pa)

Since the NFL draft is finished, who do you pick as the Offensive and Defensive players of the year from this draft class??

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:08 PM)

My knee-jerk reaction is to say Tavon Austin and Jarvis Jones. A little biased about Austin because he is a fellow Baltimore native. I've known about him since he was in high school.

vince, nj [via mobile]

Would Tebow fit in on the Browns? He has a playoff win (over a browns division rival and norv saw what the kid could do first hand twice two years ago. Is he worth the media parade?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:09 PM)

I know Lombardi liked him coming out of college and he's close friends with Josh McDaniels, who drafted Tebow. But I just don't see the Browns inviting that drama to Cleveland.

Andrew (Cleveland)

I know it's early, but how many wins will the Browns have next season? Although they didn't draft a lot of players, I think an improved coaching staff and aggressive schemes make them a .500 team in 2013.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:10 PM)

Best possible scenario is 8-8. But I would bet against it.

bradblackandgold (Berkeley, CA)

Hey JH! Lots of post draft speculation, but since the Steelers have only traded a future draft pick away twice ever (Shamarko being the second time), who all will be a part of the compensatory pick formula for the Steelers? Losing Wallace, Lewis, Mendenhall, picking up Gay and LSH?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:12 PM)

I believe William Gay was cut by the Cardinals, so he wouldn't factor into the formula. Steelers should get a third for Wallace if he's productive. It should be no lower than fourth. The others would be guesswork.

Emil (Atlanta)

Do you see Aaron Mellette contributing in the passing game at all this year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:13 PM)

Contributing to practice squad is more like it.

Patrick (Dawgtown)

Will the Brown's new front office next year like their extra picks in the draft?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:14 PM)

They'll have the benefit of having their own scouts in place. Banner and Lombardi were working with scouts from previous regime.

Brandon (Newark, OH)

What kind of impact do you see Margus Hunt having on an already stout Bengals D?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:14 PM)

Not much this year. He'll impact special teams mostly as a rookie.

Lewis (Miami County, Ohio.)

Hi J.H., Do you think Maualuga can step his game up this year or have we seen all that Rey has to offer?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:15 PM)

I think he'll play better than last year. He seemed too distracted by the contract year.

Aaron (SLC)

Do you think Cleveland is planning on trading Sheard to get a veteran CB or FS (or someone else), or do the Browns think McFadden and Slaughter are the answers at those positions?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:16 PM)

Browns officials said at the draft that there were no plans to trade Sheard.

Coltrane (Eastern Shore, MD)

Do you think the Ravens will bring in a WR or LT or do you really think they have the guy on the roster that could do a solid job?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:18 PM)

They will be looking to add after the preseason, especially if no one steps up at receiver. Remember when the Ravens made the trade for Lee Evans a few summers ago? As far as left tackle, it looks like it will either be move Osemele there or re-sign McKinnie, who's been making FA visits.

Anthony (NY)

The Margus Hunt pick surprised me the most with the Bengals when they could have addressed Safety or LB...with Swearinger and Arthur Brown both still there do you think Hunt was the right pick?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:19 PM)

He was ranked among their top 21 players on the board. So, based on that, the Bengals did. I would have addressed safety at that spot.

Steve (Cleveland)

Barkevious Mingo's weight is listed around 240. That is not much different than some of the quarterbacks in the league. Do you think he will be as effective without having to put on weight which could slow him down.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:21 PM)

He's rail thin. Needs to add some muscle. But the reports say he is stronger than he looks. But he won't be able to hold up at that weight.

Deej (State College)

The Browns are my sleeper pick this year! Book it! AFC North Champs!

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:21 PM)

Obviously it's happy hour already in State College.

Duron, Columbus [via mobile]

Hey JH, thanks for all the coverage. I know you just posted about Dalton, but in your opinion is he a franchise QB and who wins the AFC North?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:23 PM)

From what I've seen of him, I see a good but not great quarterback. He has good intangibles but there's a reason why he lasted until the second round. Dalton is young and can still grow and develop. But right now, he's a borderline franchise quarterback. This season will go a long ways to convincing everyone whether he is or isn't.

Dylan (Cleveland)

How does the Browns coaching staff feel about going into the season with Jordan Cameron at TE?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:25 PM)

I think the Browns are quietly optimistic. They did talk to Fred Davis in free agency, which tells me that they aren't totally sold on Cameron. But he's athletic and tight ends have always had a big role in Norv Turner offenses. Cameron will get a chance to prove himself.

Ben (Afton, Va)

Is Jared Gaither a possibility at LT for Ravens or is his return to Baltimore as unlikely as Ray Lewis coming back next year.. (like how i did that)

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:26 PM)

Not as long as Harbaugh is coach there.

Martin (London, England) [via mobile]

Hi JH, if Shamarko Thomas shows well as a rookie do you the think the plan is to let Ryan Clark walk next year when his contract runs out?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:26 PM)

That's what the Steelers are hoping. They need to get younger and cheaper at that position.

Frank (beirut Lebanon)

JAMISSSSOOOOONNNNN.... RAVENS TOP 5 D?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:27 PM)

With the moves they've made, they'll definitely be better than No. 17 from last year. Top 10 seems realistic.

Ed (DC)

Who do you see as the best offensive rookie in the AFC North?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:27 PM)

Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell will get more opportunities, but Bengals RB Giovani Bernard will be more explosive.

Ed (Baltimore)

Does Tandon Doss have the ability to fill the void left by Boldin?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:28 PM)

Nothing I've seen from him over the past few years tells me that he can.

jbt2miami (akron)

JH, so if cameron gets a chance to prove himself, does thad lewis get that chance also?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:29 PM)

Not with Weeden and Campbell ahead of him on the depth chart.

J.D. (Cleveland)

Have you heard any rumblings of a Kerry Rhodes, Ray Horton reunion in Cleveland?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:29 PM)

That wouldn't surprise me. In fact, it makes sense. Browns have the cap room to do it. And they have a need.

Chris (Texas) [via mobile]

Do you see Wheaton work his way into the starting receiver rotation this year for the Steelers?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:30 PM)

Steelers have raved about how polished he is. Based on that, I would say he has a chance to be No. 3 or No. 4. He will likely contribute more on special teams than Burress and Cotchery, which will help him be active on game days.

scott (pa)

out of steelers draft who will contribute the most this season

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:31 PM)

Le'Veon Bell and Jarvis Jones. If not, I would be shocked.

Back2Jungle (Atlanta, GA)

Do you feel Giovani Bernard can be the next Ray Rice?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:32 PM)

I would like to see him play a few snaps in the NFL before making such a declaration.

Steve (Baltimore)

Jamison, are the Ravens being shortsighted with the WR position in hindsight? They let Boldin go and did not address the position in free agency or the draft. The franchise suffered for a long time at the QB position until Flacco. Did they forget that we suffered at WR too until Boldin came along? Do you see a way to fix this?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:33 PM)

Ravens keep telling everyone that they believe someone like Doss, David Reed, Deonte Thompson, Tommy Streeter or LaQuan Williams will step up. The fallback is starting Jacoby Jones, which would limit him as a returner. Baltimore could also use Pitta more as a WR.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Who is the leading candidate to fill the shoes of Anquan Boldin?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:34 PM)

Doss or Jacoby Jones.

Bob (Sierra Vista, AZ)

Do you see any CFAs making an impact in the AFC North this similiar to Burfict and Lamar did last year? If so, who should we watch for?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:35 PM)

I plan to look at the undrafted rookies in more detail this afternoon. Hope to post something tomorrow on my thoughts.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:36 PM)

Have to run. Radio is calling. Thanks for all the great questions. Talk to you next week. Hope you don't suffer too much from post-draft hangover.
