It's the fastest hour in golf! Vijay gets off with no penalty. I gotta know... how do y'all feel about it? And who wins this weekend? BRING IT!!
MC, do you think rory is going to win this week? And if he wins is he going to be number 1 again??
Well I picked Streelman to win and he's only 3 shots back right now so I'll stick with him but, Rory LOVES this track and he's gonna be tough to beat I think.
Perception is that rules are different for the bigger names in golf. NBA?
And perception is reality. At least that's what has been pounded into me since I've started doing media stuff.
Hey MC, love your work and all around style. Here's my question, is Rickie Fowler the Anna Kournikova of men's golf? Cool, good looking, marketable, but just not destined to win a whole lot?
Thank you, I appreciate ya. As far as Rickie goes, he's more than just flash. The thing with Rickie... his swing his homemade and his only ever swing coach passed away, so when his swing gets out of whack it takes a while to get it back. Can he win more yes, but he's having back issues already.
Vijay had no idea he was doing anything wrong, and it's confirmed that he got no advantage. Any punishment would have been to make a sacrificial lamb out of him, and that's not how the PGA Tour rolls.
What happens when you tell the cop you didn't know what the speed limit was?
Had my last final yesterday and I'm officially on summer vacation!! Kind of ironic that Vijay finally gets let off the hook, and now he isnt playing. Have you ever seen so many people withdraw from a tournament due to bad greens or whatever reason?
Congrats, I hope all the finals went well.As for this week. I feel really bad for the tournament because it's set the standard for how to run your event. One year of bad greens... shame. But I've never seen so many last minute W/D's in years.
Irony is the 17th at TPC Sawgrass is almost underwater and the course got so much rain yesterday and today that spectators will not be allowed on the course until Tuesday!!
With the US Open playing <7k yards doesnt this give a larger advantage to longer hitters? It's counter-intuitive but doesn't a shorter course allow longer hitters to use less-club thru-out the course and hence the advantage?
Not if they get the rough thick enough. I'm thinking they will NOT do the graduated rough and if you miss the fairway you will not get it on the greens.
MC, with a win Will rory be number one again?
No, I don't think so.
Would you rather loop for a guy that is maybe a tour average player, but treats you like gold or a Top 10 player who is a horrible human being and treats you like dirt.
Give me the average player that treats me like gold. Would make the win more special for us both and I'd rather be happy than rich. Will live longer and show my sons what really matters in life.
Mike, have you changed your mind regarding Tiger not DQing himself at the masters? You pounded on him pretty hard, saying that golf had been dishonored, etc.... Now that several weeks have passed, do you still think that Tiger has tainted the game??
I better clarify because you're putting words in my mouth. I said the GAME of golf had lost it's honor. And I wasn't pounding Tiger, I was pounding the whole debacle. I felt like the best thing he could have done was W/D but he was put in a situation that was no win. I'm glad he didn't, but I'm also glad he didn't win. He will win the US Open though and THAT will be AWESOME for him and for golf.
Caddie question - do guys in the final group each day have to rake the bunkers?
99% of the time we do just in case of a playoff and because you don't wanna change your routine.
(Sniff) Phil told me he loved me... (wild sobbing)
Like he hooked up with your little sister right in front of you!! Here's a long distance hug!!
when will tiger win his next major
Flying out to Vegas in the morning. Which is more likely to happen - Vijay wins a PGA tourney this year, Pitino wins the Derby to go with his Nat'l Championship or Mayweather gets knocked out!
Pitino's horse wins the derby
Thank you! I saw the pic of 17 at sawgrass, hopefully the course won't be too water logged. You gonna be there next week?
I'll be there and the course has a REALLY good sub-air system for the fairways and greens so I'm sure it's working overtime right now.
how many more majors will tiger win?
Even though Merion is set up for less than 7,000 yards, don't you think it has the potential to be a real bloodbath? Some of the fairways are ridiculously narrow, the rough will be penal, and I bet we will see a lot of 3 putts.
I was asking my editor earlier today, what score would be too low if conditions were perfect.
Hi MC: Just saying, but the Hawkins 3 hr chats on GC are filled with people who don't know the least thing about golf, with short, snarky answers. Yours are terrific, and you truly take the time to think out an answer, whether we like it or not. (I can vouch for that.) LOL. Pls give your opinion: GC Pregame just now Chamblameless said Rory is Back, Back. He didn't even birdie one Par 5. Is his Rd 2 of 71 saying he's back to GC usual standards? Thanks. PS: Who told you the rules are different for bigger names? If so, that person didn't ask for it, and it makes them look bad, then. Not fair.... thanks.
Well I appreciate that Sun Shine. I won't criticize any other people or places that do chat's. It's just not my style, I feel like there's room for everyone to have a voice. Even if we don't agree (and you and I have bumped opinions many times!)As for Rory, he's not back until he wins and then has a good showing at a major. I don't put too much in him playing the par 5's bad this week though.
Hello MC, loved that bit with Bubba, you should do many more. Also, is Phil Mickelson owner or shareholder of Callaway? He always says "our engineers" and stuff like that....
Looking forward to making some more fun ones with Bubba, thanks. Phil did that even when he was with Titleist and before that when he was with Mizuno. But it's because he really is involved with designing clubs. He loves that stuff. You should have heard him talking to a helicopter pilot about flying, you'd have thought he was a mechanic
Do players take home ALL of their prize money? I've heard that the Tour retains a portion for their retirement, is this true? And if so, how much do they take home?
When it says they win $1.3 million... on Monday morning they can go to the ATM and do a balance inquiry and there will be $1.3 million more than there was Sunday morning!
Asked you this on Twitter, aside from B. Watson's comments, I've not heard a word regarding Jason Collins. I assume his annoucement didn't play well in the white, southern conservative, overly brand paranoid world that is the PGA.
I think you may be surprised. Check out Luke Donald's twitter account. He retweeted a Ricky Gervais in support of Jason Collins. I honestly believe it's a non issue for most tour pros. Even Bubba said it wouldn't stop him from being friends with someone.
I think you've touched on it before but what does Quail Hollow do that sets itself apart from other tournaments?
Well now there are a bunch of tournaments that do what Wells FArgo does, but when it came into being they did everything better and did more for golfer, caddies, wives, even media than most other tournaments.
How quickly does the prize money show up in the caddie's account?
Depends when the player writes the check to the caddie!
Sorry to say that it looks like Collinsing is not going viral.
And I'm FINE with that!! haha
Alright Michael here's the scenerio.. You're caddying for Tiger in the final round of the US Open and Tiger has a huge 9 foot par putt on 17 to keep his 1 shot lead. You both take a look at it and Tiger thinks its 1 cup out to the right, and he's about to set up over putt. But you're almost positive its inside right and he's wrong. Do you call him off of the putt a la Stevie at the 99 PGA???
I tell him what I see WAY before he steps in. And if he doesn't call me in on the read, it's not my place to get in any golfers head while they go thru their routine.
If a new player makes the Tour, without any sponsors, would he have to pay for entering tourneys? What about travel and sleeping? Or does the Tour care of everything for everyone?
There are no entry fees into PGA Tour events any more. Players are responsible for all travel and accommodations. Most tournaments do have courtesy cars so they don't have to rent cars but other than that, guys are on their own.
Cake or Pie?
Have you seen my picture? BOTH! HAHA
Well, Phil just took the outright lead with a birdie on 9. Everyone has clamored for a Tiger-Rory showdown, but one that intrigues me just as much would be a Rory-Phil showdown! Who knows what would happen?
Most people overlooked Phil the thrill going into this week! They'll regret that!
I did. But he plays well on bumpy poa annua greens so I should've known
Do caddies usually travel alongside the player? Do they stay in the same hotels?
Well caddies have to pay their own way, unless you're player flies private and brings you along (that's a REAL treat too). But Priceline has created an environment now where caddies and players do stay at the same hotels. Not always on purpose. Sometime you want some time away from your boss to do your own thing.
Why would any player buy their own private jet like Phil or Tiger when there are tons of companies like NetJets that will give their sponsorship and you could travel for free?
They don't travel for free. They are given some hours of flight time and then a small discount but if you have the money... having your own plane makes sense for time constraints, family travel hassles, and privacy.
MC Love the chats do most tour playters rent a home each week for the tournaments they play in or do most stay in high end hotels and the home rental is mostly used at Augusta?
Thanks LJ. Yeah, home rentals are not done very often. other than Augusta. But many guys don't stay in "high end" hotels anymore.
Your new Vokey wedges are everything you hoped for?
I have to admit they're the M version and the 60 has a sole that's twice as wide as my old one. I shanked 4 shots with the new one around the green and my buddies looked at me like I had two heads. The 54 is AWESOME, don't know if the new LW is gonna survive.
Was reading about some of the short par 3s at Merion... How short is too short? People talk about awkward distances for their wedges, but how would an 80-yard par 3 be for the pros (if it had a tricky green)?
I don't think there's a par 3 at Merion under 200 yards and one can be stretched to 250! For a great short US Open par 3, think Pebble Beach #7. Wind and elevation change makes it a great hole.
I've heard several players say that they play with each other for cash money on practice rounds. What game do they wager on (match, medal, skins, or other), and do they wager a lot? Also, among caddies, do you wager on your bosses?
My attorney has advised me not to answer that question... JUST KIDDIN'!Yeah guys gamble during practice rounds and it depends on who's playing as far as what the bets are.Sometimes caddies bet too but usually we're too busy making notes and doing the work for the week.
If you could be a member at any club in the country which one would you choose (besides Augusta)? Riviera would be a pretty cool spot.
Pine Valley or Cypress Point
If Rory wins the U.S. open will he be #1 in the world?
There's alot that can happen between now and then so it would be irresponsible to say that right now.
Thanks for chat--have a good Cinco de Mayo!
And ALL of y'all as well!
How are the greens crew supposed to handle these, and what are they doing now? From what I see on TV, they look absolutely horrid! The rest of the course looks gorgeous though...
Course is amazing and remember... EVERYONE has to play on the greens so no one has an advantage!
Great Chat again MC been a lot of fun!
WOW that went fast! Hey, NO CHAT this Monday I'll be on my way to Players Championship but you can hit me up on twitter@ESPNCaddie or email me at ESPNCaddie@gmail.comCheck the website for the next chat. Maybe Friday of Players but we'll see.Have a great weekend everyone!Play well.MC
