Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

WELCOME! It's the fastest hour in golf! Tiger gets win number 4 this year even after a dust up with Sergio who straight choked. Whatcha think?

Joel (Niagara Falls) [via mobile]

Mr. Collins, For years, my favorite pro to follow has been Vijay Singh. The so-called "Big Five" era of Vijay, Tiger, Phil, Ernie Els and Reteif Goosen of course is over, but what do you see in Vijay's immediate future ? Can he make any type of Fred Couples-like run in one more major, will he remain on tour a while longer or do you think he'll join the Seniors Tour ? Thank you.

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Who's Mr. Collins?! Just Michael, Mike, or MC in here...Vijay will play and win on the Champions Tour if he wants to but his time of contending for majors has come and gone.

Andrew (Chicago)

Hey Mike where is Tiger playing in his next two events and how do you think he should fare at those tournaments?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

He'll play the Memorial and the US Open next and win them both.

Shawn (Ontario)

What am I missing? What started the Woods/Garcia feud they are talking about?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Tiger was in the trees left on the 2nd hole and pulled a 3 wood before Sergio had hit his shot. The crowd reacted (which they ALWAYS do) as Sergio was over his shot. He hit a horrible shot, made bogey. Tiger made birdie, and Sergio during the delay (instead of going straight to Tiger) said on camera that it was Tiger's fault. Tiger never said sorry and said yesterday he won't. Queue the Rocky theme song!

DavyB (Salem MA)

Tiger's shot on the 15th hole of Friday's round at the Masters could have dropped in the hole as easy as it had bounced into the water or at least left him a birdie put... Can you imagine? I think he would have won the Masters too and be 5 for 5 in PGA events this year... Tiger or the Field for the US Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

I always have said Tiger was not going to win the Masters but was going to win the US Open. The question now is can he break his 9 win year of 2000?

Tyler (Chicago)

When Tiger said he was informed about Sergio's 17th via "well influenced fans" was that golf etiquette for saying drunk?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Bill (Tacoma)

What side of the fence are you on in terms of Sergio/Tiger? I like Sergio and want to back him up, but he has to know what comes with playing in Tiger's group by now right? Sour grapes or a legitimate gripe?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I think they were both in the wrong. If Tiger was playing with Stricker he wouldn't have pulled the club until he looked to see if Stricker had hit already. And Sergio needed to man up and say something to Tiger IMMEDIATELY after Tiger hit his shot, or if it was me (as a caddy) I go straigh to Joe and say, "hey man, your boy better knock that off."

Rocket Engineer (Spain)

Hey Mike: After Friday at August, you tweeted that "the game had lost its soul." Any comment on that now? Seemed like an overreaction to me.

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

I said the game of golf has lost it's honor. And I'll admit it was written with a bit of emotion but I still feel like the situation was a black eye and stain on our beautiful game.

Jordan (Virginia)

What are your feelings about Tiger's drop on 14? I feel like he did the right thing consulting with his playing partner and I feel he got it right. How else could he have figured out where is ball crossed the line, you cant tell without looking at the tv but by then its too late.

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

I feel like Tiger did the right thing and the drop was perfectly fine. If your playing competitor and his caddie are good with the drop, then I KNOW it was good. The tv camera angle wasn't in any position to affectively judge where the ball truly crossed.

Nate (Salt Lake City)

I feel like "old Tiger" wouldn't have hit the ball in the water on 14 and would have won this tournament by a few strokes. Do you think that hook into the water was a sign that he is still not "back"?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Not at all. Just shows that even at where his game is now, he's still not perfect. There's no such thing as perfect in golf. He's comes close before though and we all wait and want to see that again.

Caroline (Toronto)

Without being facetious, I think Sergio needs to retain the services of a sports psychologist. Unless he overcomes his mental shortcomings, he will never be more than an "also ran" who was "great in the Ryder Cup". He also needs to stop stoking Tiger's ire because it will inevitably backfire.

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

Completely agree with the sports psychologist call. And believe me when I tell you... I'd be low if I speculated that 50% of golfers have talked to one at some point. The number is closer to 80% from what I know

Tom (Verona, WI)

David Lingmerth perhaps had an edge because his home course is TPC Sawgrass. How many times this year do you expect to see him with a share of the lead on a Sunday?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Yeah, he's now got a taste of what it takes to get in position on Sunday in a BIG way and being tight with Jonas Blixt will also help him.

shosheak (the couch)

Another back door top 10 finish for Rory, who once again struggles to "eliminate those silly mistakes." I can't recall another top player rinsing so many balls and accruing as many penalty strokes as Rory has in 2013. Will he get his season turned around?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

I do believe he'll win a major this year, my fear is that his game won't be the consistent contender we all want so bad.

Geoff (Bethlehem, PA)

Hey MC... it wasn't like Tiger was 20 feet away from Sergio when he pulled the club... the noise that makes alone can be distracting. Tiger can't control what the crowd does and it seemed clear by the audio he hadn't even started his backswing yet. Sergio made a poor swing and rather than blame himself he blamed Tiger.. simply because he doesn't like him.

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

Tiger knows what a crowd's reaction is going to be when he pulls that club on a par five, don't be naive. Again the question I ask is: If it was Stricker would he have taken four steps and looked to see if he had hit first? I say yes, so even if he didn't mean to "distract" Sergio, the right thing to do is say, "my bad." That's what we teach our kids isn't it?

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

Take Sergio's name out of the situation and put in Steve Stricker's name. Does it all go down the same way? If the answer is no, then we all know the WHOLE thing wasn't right.

Tom (Syracuse)

What do you think of Tiger not wearing Pink for mothers day like many of the other pros?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

I think it was his mom who had him start wearing red on Sunday's because of it's symbolism in her culture, so by him wearing red he WAS honoring his mother.

jon (foster city)

MC, how would you evaluate Tiger in terms of his ability to run away from the field at times in the early 2000s while his wins now tend to be by 1-2 strokes. He's definitely the best but not quite at the level he used to be. Agree?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

definitely agree. I think in the past he could put it on cruise control but now with young guys like Lingmerth who will keep coming at him he has to play a little different coming down the stretch and we see some mistakes

Nick (Canada)

I think these young guys are finally starting to see the Tiger that Ernie, Phil, Scott have dealt with it their whole careers. Your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Kind of, but when Tiger got the lead, those guys would all concede. Then Y.E. Yang beat Tiger and the kids now think, "cool, Tiger has the lead! I'm gonna go get him!"

Kevin Streelman (Scottsdale, AZ)

Hey MC... you know what's great about this Tiger/Sergio talk? Guys like me are quietly having a heck of a year! I'm feeling real good right now!!

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

You know as well as anyone, talk has nothing to do with what happens on the course. You are reaching the potential that has always been in you. One of the top players in the world today!

Jeff (Chicago)

As a caddy, would you have encouraged Sergio to fire at the pin on #17 yesterday, or would you have preferred a target in the middle of the green? Seemed like Sergio was going for the win right there and didn't want to deal with a possible playoff

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Last time he was in that position he made birdie there and won... you think I want him to play safe? Didn't come here for second place and I want my man to BELIEVE that both of us are together on this shot. It matters.

Kate (OK)

The teevee guys were, once again, raving over Adam Scott's swing. Isn't it almost exactly the same swing that Tiger had when he was young?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

It's the swing Butch Harmon had Tiger working towards.

alex (hawaii)

did anyone verify, either with lacava, spectators, or the marshal with tiger's group, that tiger, or lacava, was told that Sergio had hit, before tiger pulled his club?

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

talked to a golf channel guy who was there, he said no marshall ever said anything to Tiger

bob (US)

Nobody thinks "cool, Tiger has the lead! I'm gonna go get him!"

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Tour players that believe they can win do. That's why you're not a tour player. Believe me, I've been there when it happens. And Streelman's caddie was my roommate and caddie for Y.E. Yang when they beat him at the PGA Championship.

shosheak (the couch)

You said, "the kids now think, 'cool, Tiger has the lead! I'm gonna go get him!'" You sure about that? Me thinks Rickie, Sergio, Rory, Keegan, et al disagree strongly given their recent attempts to "go get him" late Sunday...

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

Maybe "cool" was the wrong word to use, but what I'm telling you is they don't think to themselves, "well Tiger's got the lead. How much does second place pay?" Like guys in the past

IB (Iowa City)

MC, Tiger's win percentage is so great that he doesn't even need to play as many tournament as most pro golfers do. Can you imagine his PGA victory if he did?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

Might be less than what it is now.

Geoff (Bethlehem, PA)

I love how people keep calling a guy like Sergio a "kid" or "Young gun"... he's 33... it's been 14 years since this "kid" almost pulled off the PGA Championship miracle!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

cracks me up too.

David (Houston)

What do you think of Vijay suing the PGA after they let him off easy for the whole deer antler spray incident? I personally will never root for him again.

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Full disclosure... been friends with Vijay for a while and have defended him for a lot of things. This was a REALLY bad stupid move. And until he really explains the true motive behind it, I'm gonna have a real hard time pulling for him too.

Jeff (Chicago)

I heard a rumor that every Tour player signs a contract saying that they cannot sue the PGA Tour. Any truth to that?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

None. But the PGA Tour IS the players. That's what's ridiculous. If Vijay were to win (which he won't) a lawsuit, the money would partly come from the players retirement fund. So in affect he's going after the other players money too.

jon (belmont)

Do you think golf is at its peak in terms of popularity right now?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

No, if Tiger wins the US Open and there's a huge battle between Tiger and Rory at the (British) Open... then golf will get really huge.

Ryan (Valparaiso, IN)

What do you think is Tiger's most important stat is this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Mitchell (Rochester, NY)

Hey Mike, We are only weeks away from the U.S. Open at Merion. When Tiger has to hit a lot of drivers he struggles to hit the fairway consistently. I know Merion is a shorter golf course, will he be able to hit driver as few times as he did this weekend? If so he will have a great chance.

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

Merion will play shorter than TPC Sawgrass so yes, he may not hit driver once.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Maybe Vijay's goal is a settlement where the Tour agrees to revamp its drug policy.

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Maybe, but this ain't how I'd do it.

Nick (Canada)

Are you coming to Canada for the Canadian Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Unfortunately I don't think so. LOVE ME SOME CANADA though. Used to do shows in Toronto and Winnipeg

JY (Houston)

MC, you think Sergio is able to recover and win an event this year....with his confidence issues, you have to think he is pretty shook but yet he seemed fairly calm

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

He is not going to win this year. But I think he'll get a win next year somewhere that Tiger's not playing.

Tom (Chicago)

Will Phil win again this year or his season all but over?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

He's done unless he wins a playoff event, which I don't see happening

Nick (Atlanta)

Do you think the wicker baskets (instead of flags) will have an effect on players in the US Open? I know some of the grandstands have flags, but how much do you this will be an issue?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Not being able to see what the wind is doing at a green is big because it puts doubt in a golfers head. Last thing you want.

Ray Lewis (Baltimore, MD)

Is Tiger's comment "it's not really surprising that [Sergio] is complaining about something" representative of what most/all Tour players feel about Sergio or just Tiger?

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

It was just Tiger taking a little shot at Sergio cause he knew it would get back to him. Players are split like fans when it comes to Tiger and Sergio as far as who they like better. With Tiger probably having the slight edge

Jamaal (Madison, WI)

Hey MC, after the US Open, other than the AT&T there are 5 weeks until the Open Championship. Do you think Tiger will play the Greenbrier?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

It's a great question, I think if he doesn't play an event overseas somewhere he'll tee it up

Jovie Lucille (Easton, PA)

WOW! Keving Streelman and Ray Lewis chatting it up with you MC... You've got some star power!! LOL

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Foss (Washington, DC)

MC, I like your opinion on espn. You are fair. What is your take on tiger haters like Brandel Chamblee?. He goes out of his way to diss the guy every time....

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

I appreciate it thank you. Can't comment on Brandel because I didn't see what he said and I try not to rip other broadcasters for their opinions. We are all entitled to our opinions whether you agree or disagree with them.

Rory (Orlando)

when can we expect to see Sergio again?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

no clue, but I would think he'll be at Memorial

Aaron (Wisco)

Everything Sergio dislikes about Tiger is what makes Tiger arguably the greatest golfer of all time. He is focused, aloof, and will stomp your neck. Sergio doesnt have that will.

Paul (U of Portland (on summer break))

What a treat of a show Tiger put on for us yesterday. I was really impressed at the way he controlled his ball, seemingly hitting any shot he wanted with ease. What I was most impressed with was how Tiger came back after the double. Gutted the par putt on 15 and striped the toughest tee shot on the course on the 72nd hole of the tournament.

Ray Lewis (Baltimore, MD)

MC... who would you most like to caddy for on Tour if they asked you?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

There are a few guys I would caddy for. But only for a week. I love this gig too much and think they're gonna let me spread my wings even more the longer I'm here.

President Obama (Camp David)

Hey, MC... wanna get together and shoot some hoops again sometime soon? -BO

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

I'll dominate you! On an 8 foot rim!! haha

Tim (Scotland)

Always said, Tiger would lose a major from the lead on the last day (happened) and he would come from behind on a Sunday in a major (will happen this year).

DB (Panama)

MC you ever gonna give us a stand up special?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

Can't. I have learned being on this side of the media light, that perception is reality. So if someone makes a cut and splice video of me and makes it look like I said something I didn't say, by the time the truth came out. It wouldn't matter. Shame but true. There are people out there that only wanna hurt others for whatever reason any way possible.

Dane Cooke ('Merica)

Whats the best golf joke you know?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Telling it here would DEFINITELY get me fired! HAHAHA

Ros (Chicago)

I understand what you're saying about Stricker, I like him too, but Tiger gets inundated with noise all the time. Sergio wasn't swinging yet. TAKE A STEP BACK!!! Good grief. I was annoyed to have to hear about it all weekend.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

yeah, kind of took away from great golf. but it did give us some DRAMA for a minute though. Would LOVE to see them in the octagon!

Jeff (Chicago)

Great work today, MC! Thanks!

Tom (Verona, WI)

Thanks for chat, MC! Too fast, like the anti-Crane.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

It DOES always go too fast. Lot of great comments and questions today...

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

I'll be here Friday, same time! But you can always hit me on Twitter @ESPNCaddie or email me ESPNCaddie@gmail.comAnd don't be surprised when I write back (people are always freaked out that I write back.)

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

Thanks y'all.Play well!!!!!
