Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

Let's roll. Had a smidgen of trouble getting my internet to work at today's lunch spot in Arlington. All good now

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

"We have as good if not better leadership than my experience in 24 years with the Cowboys has seen." Can you say delusional? Back to back 8-8 seasons and getting embarassed in both of those final games when everything was on the line. Where's the great leadership? That was laughable but talk about disrespect to Jimmy Johnson and those boys of the 90's. THAT was great leadership. This team, along with no discipline, (because jimmy would've cut doug free months ago if not during this past season ) is lightyears away from that kind of leadership. What did you think when you heard Jerry say that?

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

The same thing you did!!!

Derrick (Garden City)

JJT, are people starting to figure Tepesch out and would he be the man out of the rotation when Colby comes back?

JJT
  (1:15 PM)

I don't think it's a matter of teams figuring tepesch out. It's that Tepesch is a guy who doesn't throw with a lot of velocity so he doesn't have much room for error. He's allowed 34 hits in32 innings, while walking just 9. So he's around the plate. he couldn't finish of scott Feldman at the plate last night and it hurt him. Grimm isn't much different.

Candy (Slippery Rock)

Hello, do you think that the Rangers will go after a starting pitcher like Garza, Peavy, or Cliff Lee at the trade deadline?

JJT
  (1:16 PM)

Too early to say, but with Lewis and Martin Perez and Harrison added to Yu, Holland and Ogando they might think that's good enough

Mel (Colorado Springs)

How big of a priority is it for the Rangers to acquire a future middle of the order bat since David Murphy and Nelson Cruz will be free agents?

JJT
  (1:17 PM)

You're not doing it because those guys are leaving. You're doing it because you need a bat this year. David Murphy, to me, seems like he's letting the pressure of his contract situation get to him a little bit. The Rangers need a bat to round out their offense. Then again, it"s early. Check back in June

Nafis (SF)

JJT, would the Rangers more likely trade Profar for an elite starting pitcher like Price or a middle of the order bat like Stanton?

JJT
  (1:19 PM)

I'd trade him for Price. Look at the teams that have won titles lately. It;s all about pitching, pitching and pitching. Stanton is terrific, but Price is a better option if you're trying to win a title

Shawn (Boone, NC)

JJT, What's up man? Why will the cowboys not end this Doug Free thing? This is getting old and we need some proven pass protection.

JJT
  (1:21 PM)

I answer this every week. What is the rush? What if Parnell tears up his knee in an OTA? In business, you never make a decision until you have to. Even if you know what you're going to do there's no need to execute until you have to just in case something changes

Shane (TX)

Willl the mavs take a shot at chris paul or dwight howard or both?

JJT
  (1:21 PM)

Both. They will get neither. Hopefully, I'm wrong

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Since the Rangers are Playing the Brewers Tonight & Tomorrow, What Other Interleague Team that the Rangers will face in May?

JJT
  (1:21 PM)

no idea. Google the Rangers' schedule

Adam (Toronto)

No one is going to shed a tear for Tony Romo with all the money he's made in the NFL and all the big games he's blown (and won), but would he ever go to JJ and say, look, I'm tired of getting harassed every game. Get me some damn blockers that can block. Seems like they're wasting the prime years of their star players by not addressing some huge needs.

JJT
  (1:23 PM)

I believe he mentioned something to that effect before he signed his deal. But the fact remains he hasn't played his best football in the biggest games. Until he does, he's just as culpable as the other stars

Phillip (Memphis, TN)

Jerry had his most success when he let Jimmy Johnson and later Bill Parcells make the tough and smart football decisions. By not addressing the foundations(Offensive and Defensive lines) in the draft, Jerry has set the franchise back another 3-4 years. How much longer will Cowboys fans have to suffer through Jerry Jones' poor management decisions?

JJT
  (1:23 PM)

until he gives up the team

Gary (Los Feliz)

As of today, are you convinced Garrett is the coach beyond 2013? I was never sold on Garrett, EVER..

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

if they make the playoffs, he'll be here. If not,he won't. Doesn't matter what I think. Those are the rules

steve (texas)

i know your not timmy mac but do you really think he believes cp3 or d12 will come here or is he just looking for something to write about, secondly what free agent should mavs really be focus on

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

I don't know you should hit him on twitter @ESPN_Macmahon and ask him. The odds of either coming here are remote

Carlos (Longview, Texas)

Mr. TaylorBig fan of yours and your work over the years just to let you know. My question is with all the wasted money that the Cowboys spend on players that don't produce for them over the last 10 to 15 years how likely is it that the ownership would be willing to bring in a consultant for football operations? Someone that has ties to drafting well and player development in their past, maybe even someone with a Super Bowl under their belt. I am just thinking that with almost every other team in the NFL having that do whatever it takes mentality why wouldn?t the best franchise and most risk taking owner an GM bring in a guy to lighten his load of unproductivity.

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

None.

Joseph Rivas (Lubbock, Texas)

Who do you think the cowboys will bring in as the future at quarterback? Is Jordan Lynch an option from NIU, he has a great ability to scramble.

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

You're talking about an organization that has drafted 3 QBs since 1989. They don't value the position.

James (NY)

Will Jeremy Parnell get a chance to compete for the starting right tackle job in training camp?

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

yep

steph (jerz)

When does rookie mini camp start?

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

fri

Jon (South Car)

Where do you think the cowboys improved the most after the draft?

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

overall on offense. More weapons means more options, which hopefully translates into more success and more points scored

Matt (Dallas)

What the biggest need for the mavs this offseason?

JJT
  (1:28 PM)

Dudes who can PLAY regardless of position. They need big-time guys with star potential

sean (Cal)

Do you believe in the bulls and warriors?

JJT
  (1:29 PM)

both good teams. Each will get dispatched in this series. Best of 7 means the better team wins. You can;t fluke your way or get lucky four times.

Chris (Texas)

if the cowboys had plans on using the 2 tightend offense why not take eifert at 18 whom was the best available?

JJT
  (1:31 PM)

Good question. It's pretty obvious they didn't want to take a chance on missing frederick - and they wanted the extra pick that turned into Williams. I would've taken the best TE if that's what I wanted

mike (Fl)

Who could you compare terrance williams game too? i heard some one say roy williams (oh no)

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

long strider who should make plays downfield. I haven't studied him, so we'll see.

ROLAND (RHODEISLAND)

WHO DO YOU THINK THE NEXT COWBOY WILL BE THAT GETS EXTENDED?

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

Sean Lee then Dez in the offseason

Darren Fike (Oxford, MS)

Should we expect a tougher showing from the defense of the Cowboys this year if everyone comes back healthy, or was the lack of intensity and lack of forced turnovers a sign of the culture that the defense has adapted?

JJT
  (1:33 PM)

You can be as intense as you want, but if you;re playing dudes off the street you're just not gonna be that good. If the D can stay healthy - a HUGE question - then they'll be good. If not, they won't

Rob (Georgia)

Will the cowboys carry 3 centers to the game?

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

we don't even know if three centers will be on the roster. Until we know that, it's impossible to answer your question

carlos (ft worth)

why is it assumed that mavs have a good chance with cp3 thru the mavs bloggers..how do they even know cp3 will even give them a meeting or is interested.

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

they're hoping and praying. I don;t see him leaving $27 million table to play for anybody.

Erik (IL)

J- Dallas Cowboys fan so I follow ESPN Dallas a lot. Great work. But this is a baseball question, I've heard very premature chats about Profar for Oscar Taveras, would Rangers consider this after resigning Kinsler and Andrus? Also, HUGE Yu fan, guy is a STUD!!

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

I don't think so - at least not right now.

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

What are the chances Anthony Spencer gets a new contract during this upcoming season if not sooner? Me personally thought dallas should've let him walk prior to last season and this offseason but since he's tagged again I believe they should let him play out this season and then decide either to let him walk or give him a new contract because franchising him for a possible third year is just out of the question.

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

It sounds like Jerry wants to give him one, but I wouldn't until we see whether he can duplicate this season's performance playing DE - not LB

Elvis (Tupelo)

Hey JJT - as always, great to be part of your chat. Seems to me that the Boys could have pursued and signed Clabo, even without a resolution of the Free contract. Did they drop the ball, or consciously decide thatClabo wasn't what they need?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

They liked Clabo at their price. You don't really want to sign a 31-YO OL to a one-year deal if you;re not a legit SB contender. You're just wasting time. You're better of seeing if Parnell can play

Chris (Dallas)

What would your expectations with the Mavs be with this unlikely roster1. Chris Paul2. O.J Mayo3.Josh Smith4. Dirk Nowitzki5. Dwight Howard6. Shawn Marion7. Vince Carter8. Elton Brand9. Darren Collison 10. Brandan Wright11. Jae Crowder12.some random power foward13. The 2013 Draft pick

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

that's not happening

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

unless you play NBA 2K

Brady (TX) [via mobile]

Will the Rangers be in line if the Marlins Decide to trade Stanton?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

yep. It depends on the price

Adam (Minneapolis)

So what do the brass see in Arkin?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

don't know, but this is the last summer he has to show it. It looks like he can't play, but I guess we'll find out for sure this summer

Elvis (Tupelo)

I admit that I don't have time to follow injury reports of all teams in the league, but it seems that the Boys are bit by major crippling injuries to key players more than other teams. Is there is an issue with strength/conditioningand off-season programs that needs improvement?

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

I don't think so. It's a violent league. Injuries happen. If there were a bunch of strains and pulls then it might be strength and conditioning, but it's not

Mac (CT)

The Cowboys don't value the position, you can't possibly mean that. Look how much money they are paying a back up. They did draft Stephen McGee and Quincy Carter, just because they did'nt turn out doesn't mean they don't value the position. They had Romo and each year brought in an experienced back up.

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

look at who they drafted to start. Like I said they don't value the position. No team has drafted fewer QBs than the Cowboys since 2000

Lance (NYC)

Hey JJT, can the Cowboys win 10 games this yr? Can they win 1 playoff game & get to the divisional round? How much upside is there in 2013?

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

let's wait until TC and see who makes the team before we start trying to figure out how many games they can win. They'll be in the hunt going into December, then we'll see

Corey (D.C.)

What are your thoughts on Escobar's ceiling from a pure talent perspective?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

no idea. I'm not a talent evaluator. Seriously, I wait until they show and I watch them play and practice with my own eyes. Then I have something to talk about. That's when I talk to coaches and scouts about what guys can do

Elvis (Tupelo)

It seems that the switch to 4-3 from 3-4 is not nearly as arduous as the transition to 3-4 was several years back. Kiffin seems to be standing pat with most of the guys he is inheriting, especially on D-Line. This feels dangerous to me.

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

That's how the Cowboys are spinning it. I don't buy much of it.

Max (Florida)

If CP3 and D12 don't work out, who might Dallas go for? Iguodala, Calderon, Ellis, Jennings?

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

I haven't looked that far ahead.I don't know that any of those guys will make Dirk the 2nd best player on the team

Ray (From Southside)

JJT Great work as usual...is the playcaller gig a bit overrated?? I mean everyone is killing Red J but I mean in the 90's the cowboys ran the same play over and over with Emmitt the lead draw...idk..i think it is overblown playcalling..ur thoughts??

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

no, it's a big deal. It's not about the individual plays, it's about the concepts and the approach philosophically. It's hard to thrown the ball 60 percent and win a title

Edward (Wilkesboro, NC)

Will the boys bring back Josh Brent? IS this a good decision or not?

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

nope. You have to let the legal system play out. This is bigger than football

Cain (Berwyn il)

Do you think Ronald Leary will be able to grab one of the guard spots this year?

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

He'll get a legit chance, which is among the reasons think they have some depth on OL ready to make a move

Jeff (North Carolina)

Do you think the Mavericks will make the playoffs next year if Dirk stays healthy?

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

Dirk and Shawn Marion are only guys signed. Until we know who else is on the roster, it's impossible to answer.

Corey (D.C.)

Do you subscribe to the whole "the center touches the ball on every play so he is important" opinion? I dont. Ive heard former NFL offensive lineman say on the radio and in interviews that Center and Guard are 2 of the least impactful positions on the field, and their flaws can be masked easier. I agree to the later, which is why I was so frustrated with taking a Center so high, bypassing on other more impactful positions, where blue-chip players were there for the taking.

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

i've never heard that about center. I've heard it about guard. A good center makes the line calls and adjustments and makes everyone life's easier

Shawn (NC Mountains)

JJT, Could you give me a good place to eat in San Antonio. Me and the family are coming down next week for vacation.

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

boudros on the riverwalk. Get the guacamole even if you don't like it - it;s that good. Blackened ribeye is outstanding

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

rosarios is good too - off the river walk

Raul (Riograndecity)

JJT, I think Garrett is on to something and will be a good coach....but luck and time may not be on his side.

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

It's his job to get his team to maximize its potential. I don't think he's done that either season

lou (los angeles)

ok, so the bums are as bad as they seem..........is it Mattingly?

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

nope. Too many high-priced guys not performing and no Greinke

scott (panama city beach)

are the cowboys going cut free?

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

if he doesn't take a pay cut

Pete (Rochester, NY)

Can't believe the Cowboys aren't trying harder to improve the defensive line and Offensive line. Please tell me they are going to be smarter than this. Costa is a below average center and because he missed most of last year he is looking good compared to when he was the weak link.

JJT
  (1:59 PM)

You realize they drafted a center in the first round, right?

Mac (CT)

What are your thought on the dline depth? Have heard some say it is not as bad as most think.

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

they're problem is more age than depth right now, although they are painfully think at NT. If Ratliff gets hurt, yikes

Ricky Walsh (Tempe, AZ)

Why did Terrence Williams drop so far? Prototypical WR size, speed, doesn't drop passes, led the nation in receiving and no off-field issues...

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

WRs are like 2 guards in the NBA. YOu can always get them

nick (nyc)

Did the cowboys have serious interest in clabo?

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

only at their price

franklin (tex)

how will the corners be asked to play in this new scheme?

JJT
  (2:01 PM)

i don't know yet. Need to find out this weekend

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

JJT, Doug Free is killing this team by not agreeing to a pay cut. There is no way he believes he should start at left tackle. When does he agree to a pay cut or ask for a release so that the team can get better? I bet his teammates, especially on the OL, are fed up with his antics.

JJT
  (2:04 PM)

Dude, you are more obsessed with what players make than anyone I know. He's not killing this team. he'll either accept it or he won't. They gave him a contract, so he's not obligated to take a paycut. They wouldn't be offering him a new deal, if he had a PB year.

Scott (Dallas)

I just hope Corey isn't talking about Floyd as a blue chipper. He's a run stopping DT with very little pass rush ability and would bring to the team about the same thing that a young Marcus Spears brings you. You wouldn't draft Spears in the first round again would you?

JJT
  (2:04 PM)

He's playing in Tampa2 scheme in Minnesota. All questions will be answered

AA (Atown)

Won't hold you to it, but if you had to pick an NFC east winner today who would it be?

JJT
  (2:04 PM)

SF

Richard (Chicago)

Have you ever written a positive article about the Mavs?

JJT
  (2:07 PM)

plenty of them. Wrote some this year, including one that said this was rick Carlisle's BEST coaching job. Stop hating, it's unbecoming. If You can't handle the truth, you're welcome to go elsewhere. I deal in reality - not what fans and coaches and GMs want reality to be. Sometimes, the reality is positive and sometimes it ain't. I tell the truth. Whether you choose to accept it reject it is a personal choice

Aggie (TX)

NFC East? SF????

JJT
  (2:07 PM)

thought u said NFC. No idea about East.

JJT
  (2:07 PM)

haven't even thought it about really. Depends on whether RG3 is healthy and 1K other things

Scott (Plano)

Did you enjoy Mara's quote about why they picked Nassib in the 4th round of the draft? In case you missed it...?We came into the third day of the draft, and he?s sitting on top of our board ? by far and away the best player we had left,? Mara said. ?I talked to Jerry and Tom Coughlin about it and we agreed that you have to respect your board. Your scouts and your personnel people put so much time putting that together. If you just continue to take the highest player on your board, in the long run you?re going to be better off as an organization.?Discuss ;)

JJT
  (2:08 PM)

that's what good organizations do

JJT
  (2:08 PM)

great chat today - this time I mean it. Until next week. Peace.
