Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric, and we've got one hour to discuss baseball or football, so I thank you for showing up (or reading the chat wrap later!) and let's get started!
Last night was a lot of Matt Harvey talk but not so much any Hector Santiago talk. What are your thoughts EK? Like him better than Hellickson, whos been struggling, for the ROS, or is this a temporary role for him?
I like the strikeout potential for Santiago, and I see the White Sox with little choice but to committ to him as a starter and see what happens. Gavin Floyd is done, John Danks might be as well. Santiago's command has been an issue in the past, so don't be trustworthy yet.
Daniel Nava vs. Josh Donaldson ROS?
Gotta take Donaldson. He has a new approach at the plate, patient and he's driving the ball. Seems to me Nava is always on the verge of being replaced for something better. Donaldson could be a No. 5 hitter.
I am looking for steals I grabbed Dee gordon what do you expect from him?
He'll certainly run. What we don't know is he'll have an OBP near .300 for the next month. Then again, I'd argue the Dodgers have so few infield options, might as well let Gordon play regularly even when Hanley Ramirez returns. There's nothing at second base or third too! I could see Gordon stealing 40 bases. Unless he's hitting .210, which is possible, I wouldn't demote him.
Robbie Grossman has been hitting a lot better lately and had 2 SBs last night...how long does he stay as a regular for HOU and does he have AL-only value?
He should be their center fielder for the next 5 years. I don't think he'll hit a lot this season, but he can draw a walk. He won't steal as many bases as Jordan Schafer did a year ago for the Astros, but there's considerable upside.
Buy Low on Kemp or stay away?
I wouldn't trade a top-10 guy to get him. He looks different. Have to think the shoulder remains an issue to some degree. But I'm not writing him off, either. Hoping for 20 home runs, 20 steals? Maybe something like what Justin Upton did in 2012, which was awfully disappointing big picture, but it wasn't nothing.
EK - would you look to sell Peavy for 80-90 cents on the dollar since he is a ticking time bomb or hold and hope for the best?
I think I'd take 80-90 percent of value, really. I'm a bit concerned a DL stint is pending.
Think Vernon Wells is droppable now? He has of course come down to earth again, .255 last 2 weeks.
Ha! Perfect timing on my optimistic blog entry on him, eh? As always it depends what you are replacing him with. I think Wells still can hit 25 home runs, so don't run away for nothing.
Bonifacio or Dee Gordon?
Good one. Bonifacio has 3 steals this week, so maybe it's a harbinger. I think Gordon will play more, though. I'd take him.
Buy high on Machado? ROS rank plz: Beltre, Headley, Machado, Prado.
He's not in the class of Beltre or Headley yet. I could see him over Prado, though. In 2 years, Machado might be a top-10 guy. No really. And imagine if he played shortstop!
Would you trade Lance Lynn for Napoli? I have Lucroy and you love him. OBS, ks, and average some of the hitting categories.
I don't love Lucroy. I just think he's a borderline top 10 catcher. Big difference. If Lynn isn't one of your top-6 starters, and he's a borderline top-50 starter for me, then sure. Napoli is better.
Your take on Jimmy Rollins? I know it's early, but should I keep running him out there assuming the numbers will come, or do we think it's possible he's hit the wall?
He's the type of guy you shouldn't analyze too closely for head-to-head formats. He's streaky. But look up in roto leagues in September and he's got 18 home runs, 25 steals and is hitting .250. Nothing too wrong with that. He hasn't hit a wall. He just appears bored.
What should we expect from McCann?
I'd say around .250 with 16 home runs and 60 RBI. Borderline top 10 catcher himself. There's risk of losing AB to lefties because of Evan Gattis, but man, people overrate that guy.
Do you think J.J. Putz is heading to the DL? Either way, who's the better option to replace him?
Certainly looks like it. I bet Heath Bell gets the nod over David Hernandez. Can't assume that from Tuesday, as Hernandez had already pitched when Putz hurt his elbow, but still. Closer experience. Managers fall for this ALL the time.
What happens to CHC rotation when Garza returns? Wood, Feldman or Villanueva to 'pen?
Can't be Travis Wood, the way he's pitched. By then Feldman will have regressed enough.
If RA Dickey bombs against TB is it crazy to consider dropping him? Niese, Pettite, Wandy, Hughes, Griffin, Cashner avail. QS league. Thanks
Unless I see something really wrong, I don't simply wait for one outing and then overreact. Dickey is going to have a good season, just not the 2012 version. I'd keep him over all the guys you named, and not think twice, really.
Saunders or Raburn in an OBP & SLG league for now and beyond?
Saunders 10 times outta 10. Raburn is going to lose playing time when Bourn returns, and he's not that good. Streaky hitter with awfully low floor. Saunders was nearly 20-20 last year!
Which bullpen guys are best bets for saves? Should I stash peralta or McGee?
McGee has been brutal this season. Peralta is clearly next in line if Rodney implodes.
What can I get for BJ Upton?
He was the No. 49 player in ESPN average live drafts, and finished last season as the No. 29 hitter. If you want to move him at his absolute lowest value, it's a mistake. It should cost another top-50 player. Sounds like you don't need that in return.
Would you pick up David Hernandez or the rehabbing Kyuji Fujikawa if you were desperate for saves?
Hernandez first. I don't see Kevin Gregg losing save opps anytime soon.
Does Cingrani stay in the rotation?
I think Dusty Baker has made up his mind already, and he usually gets what he wants. And it wouldn't favor Cingrani. It's up to Mike Leake to step up.
What preseason top 10 pitchers would you give up Harvey for?
As of now he'd be my No. 4 guy, after Verlander, Kershaw and Felix. Hard to believe, eh?
Good idea to get Heyward from disgruntled owner?
Very good idea.
Lance Lynn is only borderline top 50? He's pitching very solid and currently in the top 20 on the player rater. Are you not buying it?
Nope. Don't get carried away with the wins.
Who is closing in Boston now?
Calvin Schiraldi, apparently. It's Tazawa over Uehara, but that's initially. I bet Uehara gets some chances.
Hi Eric. What's your thoughts on Belt ROS? Rather own him or Gyorko? Thanks
I'm going Gyorko. Second base elig. Has pop. Takes walks. I'm tired of Belt's underachieving.
Which broken Red Sox closer would you rather use a DL spot on; Bailey or Hanrahan?
Bailey. He's likely to have multiple DL stints, but I think Hanrahan might be done.
When is the appropriate time to sell high on Trumbo?
You're running outta time.
Any reason to hold onto Kendrys Morales? Thinking of dropping him for Arenado.
Can't really argue that one. One guy plays at Coors and has upside. Go for it.
Rather have Grimm or Wood? Or a returning Colby Lewis?
Wood. Don't go near Grimm. It will have a grim result.
Ek, love the chats! Thanks for answering a ton of questions! I know you like Cingrani but is it too much to give up him and cespedes for wainwright?
Beautiful job of selling high there, though Cespedes is legit.
Dropped Middlebrooks for Jay Bruce. Tell me I did good.
Jay Bruce was a free agent in your league? You did good in finding an easy league!
Any reason to keep Viciedo?
Sure. Hit 25 homers a year ago, no reason why he can't do so again. White Sox desperate for offense right now.
Peralta or Crow as a saves flier?
I'd say Peralta. I don't see Holland losing the Royals job, and if he does Herrera and his home run problems remain next in line, somehow.
Kyle Kendrick is the ACE of the Phillies rotation! HA
He's a different pitcher now. No, really. I didn't believe it either, but I've seen all his starts and he's mixing speeds, getting strikeouts, he's consistent, avoids the bad innings of the past. This is actually somewhat legit.
I recently watched the touching video of Matt Kemp signing a ball and giving his cap, jersey, and cleats to a fan. Love seeing this even through his struggles this year.
That was awesome.
What do you expect Brett Lawrie's final numbers to be?
Hoping for .270, 15 home runs and 15 steals, but as with Hosmer and Belt I am getting to the point where it just doesn't look likely.
What do expect from Ozuna?
I expect when pitchers get a read on him he will struggle mightily, but enjoy the power. I doubt Ozuna hits better than .270 if he gets 300 at-bats.
Liriano rumored to be back this weekend. Should I cave and get burned again or run away as fast as I can?
Don't go near that guy.
Karabell, answering tons of questions today! LOVE IT! Talk to me about Carlos Gomez, we all know the AVE will drop, but am I selling high here? Looking to ask for Dickey in return, is that too low? Thoughts?
Gomez is the No. 3 guy on the current Player Rater, so yeah, ask for a lot more. I think he might lose 100 points of batting average, but a 20-35 season is legit. Maybe he hits .280. He has improved. I'd want more than a struggling pitcher.
Starling Marte has been sensational. Sell high candidate? What do you expect rest of the season?
Same thing. Can't hit .350 with that walk rate, but a 20-40 guy, sure.
So many fascinating pitching questions this year. Is Boston's pitching coach having a big impact on that rotation? Bucholtz, Dempster and Lester look better than expected.
Sometimes it just takes general change in the clubhouse, if you know what I mean. They all had the talent.
Any chance Kimbrel is tipping his pitches? He tends to struggle early in the year before dominating, but the blown saves and homers are uncommon.
Just a bad stretch. I doubt he's hurt. Velo is there. Location an issue and some bad luck. I wouldn't run away.
Thoughts on Houston's Paredes?
Keeping an eye on him, because there is upside for pop and speed and he should play. I like him over Grossman, for example, at least now. Was nice when Paredes played infield!
Ben Revere - why is he still on my roster? Every time I give up on him, he hits a solid line drive up the middle. Your take?
It will get better. And remember, he stole 36 bases AFTER June 1 last year. Runs in bunches. I think he'll end up hitting well enough to be owned in all leagues, maybe .270.
Bruce O/U 28 HRs?
Over. It's ridiculous to run away from Jay Bruce.
When do you jump ship with guys like Ike Davis & Moustakas?
I'm there if there are better options on free agency.
Sell Torii Hunter high to buy Jay Bruce low?
Yes, but I also think Hunter will hit .310 and score 100 runs. So he's not an ideal sell high. He can keep doing this to a degree.
Hosmer/Peavy too much to give up for Hanley at this point?
As long as Hanley returns within a month or so, not at all. Hosmer is a below average fantasy first baseman right now, showing no signs.
Are you drinking the Yonder Alonso kool aid? Compared to young Billy Butler. History of lots of doubles, fences now moved in. What do you project for him?
I could see maybe 18 home runs this season, but that's optimistic.
I've been offered Machado for Gallardo...good trade?
As long as you have enough pitching left over, sure. But Gallardo is fine. Reliable 200-strikeout guy.
Weekly Wil Myers update question. ETA? ROS Projections?
Nothing has changed. Should be up by first week of June when it makes sense financially for strapped Rays. Or sooner if they're desperate, which they won't be.
Hi Eric- What do you expect from Slowey ROS? Despite the lack of run support, he's been an ace so far.
Some regression here. Can't keep this up. Has a 88 percent strand rate with bad bullpen. xFIP is two runs higher. If he makes 30 starts - no guarantee there - I could see 3.50 ERA but with maybe 7 wins!
As high as you are on Harvey, would you give up Zobrist for him? With Granderson and Heyward coming off DL, he's the odd man out in OF.
Yeah, this looks totally legit. And I do love the Zobrist.
Speaking of Billy Butler whats going on? Will he get his projected .300 and 30 homers this season?
It's May 8. Still 5 months left.
Would you drop Revere or Gardner for BJ Upton?
Oh absolutely. C'mon! Way too much hate out there on Upton. He'll be fine, or fine for what he does.
Belt or Moreland ROS? Thanks!
Can't believe I'm saying this, but probably Moreland. Belt just doesn't drive the ball consistently, and now he's not drawing walks. Moreland can fake his way to 18 home runs.
Are you buying low on Strasburg?
I am, but would still take Harvey.
Matt Harvey has faced MIA, CWS, MIN, PHI, SD, with the only decent offenses being WAS and LAD. Isn't he great sell high for one of those top three?
I see the point, but how many great offenses are there? Is he facing Detroit anytime soon? Going to Coors? Look at the division. And I think he transcends matchups now.
HA! You think an owner could swap Zobrist for Harvey? Let's be realistic. What type of hitter would be required to aquire Harvey at this point.
That is realistic. Zobrist is a top-50 player, middle infield eligible. And as I am seeing here in the questions, many think I'm nuts to exalt Harvey to top-5 SP status so soon.
How for real is Brandon Phillips? He is having an AWESOME start to the year?
Does the same thing every year, and he will again. Non-issue.
Matt Adams came of the DL, are you adding him?
Don't see how he will accrue enough playing time to be worth adding in a 10- or 12-team mixed. Would need Beltran/Holliday/Craig to get hurt.
As a Votto owner I am worried about the lack of power thus far. Should I be concerned?
We've only been discussing this for 2 years. Yes, he is not likely to hit 25 home runs. But he will walk a lot.
Thoughts on VMart? .300 15 90 still realistic?
Yeah, I could see that. He can still hit.
Profar? When- if ever this year?
He's doing little in the minors to force Texas to do anything. I'll say August.
so you answer a question thats been asked 1000 times but not one about the slow start by Konerko?
Oh, so I should answer YOUR QUESTION and not anyone else's. You need a better attitude. This is a chat. But, I will say Konerko is a great buy low option, so get in there and tell me why I am so wrong!
Pujols or A. Gonzalez?
Pujols. Though it seems like everyone has given up on him.
Arenado or Seager 12 team keeper league?
Seager has track record, and he runs.
Allen Webster -- how do you rank him ROS?
Don't know his role yet. Doubt he's up for the long term unless rotation spot opens up though.
Thoughts on Matt Cain the ROS? Still a top 10 SP?
He's on the border for me. A few troubling numbers, but great track record and ballpark. I'm not overly worried.
You believing in Machado yet? For some reason everyone thinks we have to wait a year for him to be relevant. Look at the numbers EK
What a novel idea to look at the numbers. I've got Machado on multiple teams. I believe, though he has exceeded expectations so far.
You comfortable keeping Kyle Seager over Lawrie ROS?
I'm right there.
As a League owner, I am worried he will lose his job. Any chance Jansson gets saves in the next month?
Always a chance, but League has been serviceable. And teams are under no obligation to use their top reliever in the ninth inning. Eighth is important too. I still take the under on Janssen saving 10 games all year.
How long until Im the closer once I get off the DL???
Not this month.
How about Price and Hamels-these guys still top ten for you too?
Yes they are.
Josh Johnson worth owner or is he just an injury waiting to happen?
The injury has already happened. He's on the DL. But yes, worth owning.
Got offered Adrian Gonzalez, Pagan and Utley for MIggy, Cingrani, and Betancourt. REALLY want to trade Betancourt, but I turn this down, right?
I can't justify trading Cabrera in that deal.
Are you down on Trumbo or just dont think he will produce at this level all year?
I'm concerned what he did - or didn't do - in the second half of last year could very easily occur again.
Is Segura a good guy to hold onto in a keeper league or should I sell high now?
Oh I think he was always legit. Surely can steal bases.
Better DL stash (since you think Johnson is worth owning): J. Johnson or Hart?
Well, I almost always lean hitter there. Hart out another month.
Is it time to add Zack Wheeler? I'm desperate for pitching help!
I don't see him being promoted this month. Just because Harvey is dominating has no bearing on him.
I need to pick up one of these starters with an eye toward Ks: Kuroda, Bailey or Maholm?
None are 200-K guys, but I rank Kuroda best.
Reynolds is the best RP in Arizona... Any chance they just make the best pitcher the closer or do they like him too much in the 8th?
He's a lefty and managers rarely opt to use them to close.
When you say Hart out another month, you mean this month right.....or have you heard something we haven't?
Earliest he is eligible to return is May 30, so have to assume some rehab assignment, might take a bit longer.
Does Gattis stay in the lineup all season?
Nope. He's already being exposed as a regular.
Realistically what can we expect from McClouth ROS?
This doesn't seem outrageous what he's doing. Just the batting average. But he'll play, he'll run.
better chance for saves H BELL OR UEHARA
Sadly, probably Bell. That's just ridiculous.
When Brett Anderson comes off the DL, do you see him getting back to where he was ranked pre-season?
I can't trust he'll make more than 25 starts. Ever.
This is not breaking news. Has been done for awhile.
Who wins this deal? Kemp for Rios
The one getting Kemp.
Has Justin Masterson officially come back to earth? What can we expect going forward?
Lefties to get many hits off him.
McCann or Miguel Montero ROS?
Montero. But I see many McCann owners do not agree.
D Brown or Ethier
Where would you slot Josh Reddick in your DL stash list from last week
Back of top 10. Not giving up yet.
Quintana OR Hector Santiago?
OK, our time is up. I tried to answer as many questions as possible, and honestly, no snark was intended. Just trying to have a little fun. Thanks so much for your interest in ESPN fantasy games and my work, and I'll continue to aim to please! Have a great day and best of luck in your many leagues!
