Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. Mock Draft 2.0 just came out this morning ... lots of draft stuff to talk about. Let's roll ...
Who is rising up your big board the most right now?
I think Trey Burke is still rising. Could go as high as the No. 1 pick. Lots of scenarios where he is No. 2 or No. 3 off the board. PGs are always coveted and Burke's spectacular season continues to intrigue people. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dennis Schroeder also fast risers.
You personally, which PG would you rather have, Trey Burke, Dennis Schroder or MCW?
Probably Burke. C.J. McCollum is the other guy that really intrigues me. Not sold he's a PG, but if he is, could be a very good pick.
When you make your Mocks, is it what "you" feel, or what you hear from teams?I know you weren't high on Ricardo Ledo, now all of a sudden he's 1st round? NBA gm's have to be saying something I assume.
My mocks are reported pieces, not what I feel. Now a few caveats. One, I don't think any team KNOWS who they are taking in May. Some teams don't decide until draft night. A few don't decide until they are on the clock. So predicting in May is obviously a problem. Two, team sources, from time to time, give me misleading information. So ... take it for what it's worth in May. As for Ledo, yes, hearing a number of teams in the late first are giving him a serious look.
Where do I go in this draft
Right now I'm projecting Noel has an 84.8 percent chance of going No. 1. We project Noel to go No. 1 to the Magic, Bobcats, Cavaliers, Suns, Kings, Wizards, Raptors, 76ers and Mavericks.
Chad does Sacramento clean house with new ownership?? and who do they target if they get the first pick
They need to. I think they keep DeMarcus Cousins ... but everyone else will be available. Have them taking Anthony Bennett in the last mock.
Isn't 12 high for Gorgui Dieng?
Yes. But he's a big who rebounds, blocks shots and he's proven to be an adept passer out of the high post. For a team that wants a player who can contribute now ... he's a solid pick and after the first seven guys, I think the field really flattens out.
The Suns can't fail with their lottery pick now that McDonough's calling the shots, right?
Ryan's a VERY good talent evaluator ... so yes, their odds improve. But he and the Celtics have missed before too. No one is perfect at this ... but I like the hire. Works hard. Is innovative. Was mentored by one of the best in Danny Ainge.
Pierre jackson draft buzz? I think he really could be a good rotational player! Next nate Robinson even better
Nate Robinson is really helping Jackson's cause right now. Both are amazing athletes and big time scorers. Pierre is actually a better PG than Nate. He's going No. 25 to Clippers in our latest mock, but he's a guy who I think is still underrated.
How will Alex Len's ankle surgery effect him in the draft?
I don't think it will hurt him. However, had he been able to workout, I think he would've shined in that setting and could have potentially helped his stock. We have him going No. 8 to the Wizards in our latest Mock. Before the injuries I saw scenarios where he could have been the No. 2 or No. 3 pick. Still might, but hard to move up the board when you are injured.
Do you think Grant Jerrett gets drafted?
For sure. Top 10 ranked high school player. Stretch four's are in vogue. Probably second round, but someone will take him.
Has my draft stock taken any hits over the past week?
Nope. Probably could write similar stories about half the players in the draft.
I feel like MCW should be a top 10 pick, he had a great tournament despite his final four performance I feel like he is a top 10 pick maybe even top 5, what do u think?
Some teams have him that high. Others don't feel the same way about him. He can really help himself by shooting the ball well in workouts. That's a big concern for scouts right now, but in high school he was a much better shooter.
Can shabazz muhammad turn into something special in the league?
Not sure he has the athletic ability and size to be special. Then again ... he plays really hard, looks to score and is a hard worker. That will help.
In past drafts there has been a plethora of euro's taken any time there is a so-called weak draft, how many do you see going in the first round this year?
We are projecting 6 in our latest mock -- Dario Saric, Rudy Gobert, Sergey Karasev, Dennis Schroeder, Giannis Adetokunbo, Alex Abrines. Brazilian Lucas Noguiera and Livio Jean-Charles are also possibilities in the first round.
Why wouldn't the Jazz take MCW given their huge need at PG?
Jazz want a point guard who can really shoot the basketball. That's Carter-Williams biggest weakness. They also like some of the point guards that are available later in the first including Shane Larkin, Pierre Jackson and Dennis Schroeder. Also Isaiah Canaan and Myck Kabongo a possibility.
Based on your draft projections now, should Zeller have stayed at IU another year? Seems like he has some work to do on his game.
PRobably. Could have developed a better jumper and projected as a stretch four. Projected as a bit of a tweener right now.
How concerned are NBA teams with Anthony Bennett's shoulder?
Not very. Everyone knew he played through the injury at UNLV. While teams obviously prefer to draft healthy players, having the surgery now probably helps his stock. Teams will be able to see the results from the surgery and it means Bennett should be back at full speed for training camp. Doubt it changes anything as to where he's drafted.
Too early. Have to see where players are drafted. Opportunity matters as much as talent in ROY races. Think CJ McCollum could be a sleeper pick for the trophy however on the right team.
If the Magic pick Noel in this year's Draft, how much of an improvement would he be over Vucevic or Harris at the 4 or 5 positions?
Not so much an improvement as a different look. He's a much better defender and shot blocker than either guy. More athletic too. All three + Andrew Nicholson would get minutes.
How high can you see Shroeder going? Thoughts on Wolters?
Could see Schroeder cracking late lottery (Jazz at 14?) or mid first (Celtics at 16?). Currently have him going to Pacers at 23 ... but things are very fluid right now.
If Trey Burke and Otto Porter are both available when the Pelicans pick, who do they choose?
How high can Mccollum go? I hope my wolves grab him at nine.
Very high. Could see the Suns taking him. Magic too. Such a lethal scorer and shooter. If he can prove he's a PG, he's going to go very high.
Does possibility of D12 or Paul signing impact Mavs direction? What is their direction?
Doubt it affects the draft. Both FA's are long shots for the Mavs. However, it's one of the many reasons the NBA Draft isn't as great as the NFL draft. NFL free agency and off season transactions happen before the draft. Wish the NBA would push draft off to mid August. Have Summer league be Fall league running up the month before training camp.
What are people saying about ray mccallum out of detroit? Very highly regarded out of high school and couldve played anywhere but chose to play for dad. Obviously the competition wasnt the best but could he be that token 2nd rounder who turns out to be a starter in this league?
Bubble first round pick. I'm personally a fan, but NBA guys seem to be on the fence.
How bummed were NBA decision makers when Smart didn't enter the draft?
Very. Magic especially upset about it. But other teams like the Jazz affected as well since every other point guard moved up a spot in the draft.
Which prospect in this draft scares GMs the most, like Perry Jones last year?
Not sure there's an exact comp to Jones this year. Not only was Jones still stuck as an upside guy, but he had a last minute injury that hurt his stock. The biggest crap shoot in the draft -- by far -- is Giannis Adetokunbo from Greece. Looks great against very weak talent in the 2nd division of Greece. But how his game translates to the NBA game? Even the most confident scouts and GMs I know don't have a clue. Could be great, could be a bust.
Do you see Victor Oladipo playing a similar role as young defensive minded athletic guards like Shumpert and Bradley?
What kind of feedback will teams have an Anthony Bennett's shoulder if it's only a month removed from surgery? Is it pure guesswork or will they have access to records/rehab? He doesn't drop at all?
Top 6 Point Gaurds in 2013 Class
1. Trey Burke; 2. CJ McCollum; 3. Michael Carter-Williams; 4. Shane Larkin; 5. Dennis Schroeder; 6. Pierre Jackson
And that's it for Chad for today! Thanks for stopping by. He'll be back next week!
