Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Welcome to the NASCAR R&D media appeal war room where somewhere in the building Penske Racing is making its final appeal of penalties from the Texas race. Think there's a chance of a reduction? Complete overturn? What's on your mind?

Joe (NC)

I see Kyle Busch is a hypocrite. In car audio he says he caused it. TV interview he says he didn't know who caused it.

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Maybe he is planning for a career in politics.

Dan (NC)

Why can't drivers figure out that blocking at plate tracks when you are in the lead is a bad move. Saturday Kurt and Joey were 1-2. Then both tried to block Smith. They didn't win because they left their tandem pusher.

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

It's the nature of the game. Part of the strategy. Plus, sometimes you have to leave your partner in order to have a chance to win. Doesn't always work out, though.

Jake (Irving, TX)

How serious is the rift between Dale and Jimmie with Dale complaining that Jimmie isn't a good teammate for not letting him pass and get his lap back?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

No rift at all.

Fred (SC)

What's the deal with Logano running his car into Smith in the NW race? Dumb move that almost wrecked him. I don't like drivers that feel they have to wreck the other car to win.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Don't believe there was the intention to wreck anybody there. Didn't see it the way you did.

Fred (SC)

Does Milka Duno get the prize for most cars wrecked by bad driving this weekend? She caused two wrecks and seemed to not know she was the cause.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Isn't that the way it always happens?

Baseballman (Florida)

Dale was really complaining about #48 working with Kenseth and hanging him out to dry on the bottom line and I wondered how bad the morale is in the 48/88 garage?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Seriously, folks. They may get riled a bit in the heat of the moment, but once the race is over those things typically are forgotten. Each was trying to win a race. At that point you throw teammates out the window.

Andrew (W. Kentucky)

Hi Newt, do you think driver of #2 crossed the line with his twitter rant about NASCAR costing him the race by making him start on the inside line?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

We were just talking about that in the war room here. The mistake was not talking to NASCAR or somebody to get all the facts before going on Twitter to vent his frustration. There was some confusion, though, but not to the level it reached.

Kevin (Fishers, IN)

Newt, did you catch Race Hub last night? Fantastic examination of the restart that Brad was whining about and clear evidence through both the freezing of the field at the caution and the in car audio from race control that BK's team was told that he was to start 9th a full 2 laps prior to the restart yet his spotter never conveyed that to Brad and when he did Brad simply wanted to argue about it. Once again BK opens his mouth before learning the facts. I thought Larry McReynolds stated it best "Brad, you simply can't continue to challenge every call made."

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Missed it, but from what I heard it was a great explanation. And Larry Mac is right.

KB Nation (Global)

Newt, as Rowdy fans we feel like #18 bad luck is just destroying NASCAR. Do you think Coach and JD need to make a team, crew swap assigning Darien Grubb and the #11 guys to Rowdy's team?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

No. And what happened on Sunday had nothing to do with bad luck. It had to do with a bad move.

Laura (Manhattan Beach)

Right after the Kyle-Kahne deal Rowdy seemed to accept responsibility but back in the garage both Kahne and Rowdy seemed to agree that it was Kahne's fault. What was your take? Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Think you have your wires crossed. Kahne never said he was at fault. I will ask him about it tonight at a press event, though.

John (IA)

A couple of weeks ago you said the stuff with you and Logano started when you picked Logano as the darkhorse for a few races. It actually started when you were the only person in the country (besides his dad) to pick your BFF Logano to make the chase.

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

So had I picked Montoya to make the Chase or David Ragan to make the Chase you would think I was playing favorites? Don't agree with your logic.

Mike (WA)

Why did Kyle do such a dumb thing as try to squeeze in between two cars like that early in the race? I thought he was such a good driver?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Kyle's aggression sometimes gets the best of him.

Digity Dog (NC)

Hey Newt, you think NASCAR is about fed up with driver of #2 questioning every call and decision?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Well, I suspect NASCAR got great pleasure in letting Keselowski know he was wrong on this one.

Zach (Dubuque, IA)

While I think he runs his mouth a little TOO much, did Bad Brad have a point regarding David Ragan on the final re-start?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Not really. NASCAR called for the change, and apparently neither Brad nor his spotter heard it. Ragan and his spotter did.

Frank (GA)

Will Kyle blow a fuse knowing he is behind Menard and Amirola in the point standings? Will Kurt since he is behind Jeff Burton and in 20th?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Hardly. Too early to worry about such things.

Frank (GA)

I don't think Hamlin can make up enough points to finish in the top 20 to have a chance for the chase. 76 points behind 20th with only 16 races left. One more bad day will definitely kill any chance.

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

All I can tell you is if he were in this position and did the same thing he did a year ago he would make the top 20 and make the Chase based on two wins for the wild card. I still believe that team is strong enough to do it. And look at the drivers he has to pass.

Frank (GA)

Air Titan did help. At least NASCAR has helped in one place of the sport.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Yep. Bet everyone except Carl Edwards is thankful.

Jim (GA)

Nice to see pack racing instead of single file for most of the race.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I thought the racing in general was great even though Matt Kenseth dominated in terms of laps led.

Eric E (Home of Cousin Carl)

Are @Kes's comments the way a champion acts? I fear he won't win #2 because he is focused on NASCAR "targeting" him instead of racing.

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

For the most part Keselowski has been a great champion for NASCAR. The sport needs an outspoken champion, somebody to challenge those in charge from time to time. Did he misspeak on Sunday? A bit. But it won't impact his run for a second championship. He thrives on this kind of stuff.

Jim (Ga. )

Newt, if #88 had been leading when the race was stopped do you think NASCAR would have called it a day and declared Junebug the winner?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

I doubt it. There still were a lot of laps left.

TG (PA)

Do you think Newman will be fined for his comments after the race?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Hard to say. He didn't criticize the Gen 6, but he did kind of criticize the racing and used a bad word on national TV.

Jim (Ga. )

During the ESPN Nationwide broadcast, Carl Edwards said, "you don't want a motived Kurt Busch". What was Carl referring to?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

He was saying that when Busch is motivated he's one of the toughest drivers to beat in the sport. At least that's my take.

Ron (Smithville)

It was clear to me that Smith passed Kurt Busch under the yellow line in the NW race. Does the yellow line rule only count in Sprint Cup?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Didn't see that.

JGR Fan (Huntersville, NC)

It was really nice of Tony Stewart to drop back and help his ex-JGR teammate Denny at the start of Dega. Do you think we will see Tony helping Rowdy win Darlington Sat. night, since he's being such a nice guy?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Uh, no.

Kristi (Indy)

Now that Kurt Busch will be testing an Indy car at the Speedway for Andretti do you think we will see other NASCAR stars like Jimmie and Danica doing the double along with Kurt since they love the Indy 500 so much?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

No.

Jim (GA)

Kyle's mistake wrecked out Vickers and killed the little chance that Kyle's teammate, Hamlin, had to make the chase.

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

It didn't help, but remember Hamlin initially was scheduled to miss six races. He got at least a few points in this one, so the math still works.

Harry (VA)

Why does Kyle hate Kahne so much that he wrecks him twice this year in plate races?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Not aware of a hatred between the two.

Gene (Ohio)

Is there a chance that Kurt Busch might do the Indy 500-Charlotte 600 double this year?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

He says there's a chance, but I'm skeptical.

Harry (VA)

I can't believe that David Ragan tweeted that NASCAR shouldn't have thrown the caution on the last lap in NW. Does he really want to be sitting drivers side facing cars coming at him before the finish line racing 190 mph? Dumb. Thankfully Burton said that wasn't a smart idea.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Guess I missed that exchange. I did see Kasey Kahne suggesting NASCAR has let the race play out in past situations, which would have given him the win. I can't fault NASCAR for being cautious, though. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Kris (Mn)

Is the lack of passing at plate tracks because of the package, or the drivers content with riding around for 180 laps? I prefer pack racing over tandem but it isn't anything like it used to be.

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

There was a good bit of shuffling behind Matt Kenseth, but to your point drivers have learned over the years that to have a chance to win they have to be in the race at the end. Riding around is unfortunately the way to do that.

Ron (OH)

I have to say I agreed with everyone of your answers in Turn 4. Miracles do happen!

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

I can go meet my maker now.

Dale Junebug Fan (SC)

Newt, if Phoenix Racing shuts down like Jayski is reporting do you think Dale Junebug might buy the team so JRM has a cup team since Mr. Finch and Dale Sr were good buddies?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

If Dale Jr wants to start a Cup program all he has to do is find sponsors and do it at JR Motorsports. He doesn't need to buy anything.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

In your opinion is Brad's lastest twitter rant whining about NASCAR restart rules unbecoming of the behavior we expect from our NASCAR Champions?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

I won't go that far. I'll just say he should have been better informed on this one.

Tyler (SD)

We thought Mr. H teamed up 88 and 48 so that Dale could have Knaus and all those secrets and now it seems like Jimmie never helps Dale. What's going on in that 48/88 shop?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Oh, they hate each other. Jimmie is jealous of Dale Jr.'s popularity and Junior is jealous of JJ's five titles. Now I have some swamp land in S.C. I want to sell you. Seriously (and I was totally joking if you missed that above), you guys and gals are reading too much into heat of the moment deals.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

If SHR doesn't step up their game and start providing Danica with better race cars do you see Danica taking her GoDaddy Sponsorship and moving to a Toyota team like JGR or maybe MWR?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

No. And where do you think Stewart should go should he continue to labor 22nd in points?

Vernie (NJ)

Has anyone ever gotten to whole story as to why Stewart fired Darien Grubb to hire Addington? Do you rate that as one of the all-time worst decisions in NASCAR?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Yeah, pretty much wrote it last year. Stewart lost faith in Grubb earlier in the year when the two struggled and never got it back. Was as much a chemistry thing as anything. Hard to fault a guy that has won three titles, but in hindsight I do believe letting Grubb go has hurt the sharing with HMS a bit.

Matt (Chicago)

As a Kasey Kahne fan, it's hard not to notice that two potentially good plate runs were ended off the nose of the #18 car this year. Is there something going on between the two of them or is it just a very ironic coincidence?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

I'm guessing coincidence, but plan to ask Kahne about it at an event later today.

Jeremy (GA)

I keep hearing Newman linked to RCR for 2014, any truth to that? Is Menard staying at RCR? I like the Newman, Menard, Dillon lineup

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

I've heard that as well. Kurt Busch also gets mentioned. Not sure how it will turn out yet. I know Kurt would love to stay at Furniture Row if it can make him a contender. If not, he and RCR do like each other.

Bob (Detroit)

The filler stories Fox showed during the rain delay were actually entertaining. Maybe next Dega race they can show them with the race in the corner of the screen until the last 60 laps. just kidding of course...

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Not sure they have any more left for the year.

Frank (Kingston, Pa)

David - Assuming Menard stays with RCR and Austin replaces Harvick, does Burton stick around mone more year or does Bush slide into the 31 seat?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Burton insists he can stay at RCR as long as he wants. Having said that, something has to give.

Jeremy (GA)

I love how RaceHub proved Brad K wrong. This guy is really turning into a whiner. Its one thing to be outspoken, its another to be ridiculous. How can anyone take him seriously? Your thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Brad K has written an apology. I accept.

Frank (Kingston, Pa)

With DH now in 31st and with others like Smoke battling for a top 20 posiiton does the 11 performance at Darlington this weekend act as the tipping point for whether Denny stays in his seat or chooses surgery and position himself for 2014?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

He basically has to have an average finish of around 13th and win a race or two to have a chance.

Cassie Laberee (Clarksville, TN)

Do you think Brad K had a reason to be upset?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

There was confusion, but as you see in his apology on his website he admits he went too far.

Ryan D. (Winston-Salem, NC)

Is NASCAR going to develop a new set of "Newman Bars" to place over a driver's mouth when they exit the infield care center at Daytona/Talladega?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Funny.

Turk (Mich)

Newt, do you think the Middlebrook might uphold 100% of the Penske penalities because the team clearly intended to deceive and trick NASCAR by violating the spirit of the rules?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

I do believe he will uphold the penalties, but not for the reason of intent you state.

Jake (Concord, NH)

JGR chose to outsource its engine program to TRD. You can delegate authority but not responsibility. Isn't JGR responsible for what they put on the track and therefore subject to the penalties? Maybe they should have done a better job auditing the practices of their outsourcing provider

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

The organization is responsible, but having said that this wasn't a maneuver to get a competitive advantage.

Lew (Texas)

I'm a big fan of Brad Keselowski, he is "my driver," but whining over the restart goes beyond the pale. And he should clean up the profanity in TV interviews, but retain his outspoken character. He is the champion, and would have greater respect if he did this. Am I wrong?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

You make valid points.

Bart (East Bay)

So Bobby Labonte and now Jeff Gordon have joined the 700 club. Isn't that just too many races for a NASCAR driver? Do you think NASCAR needs to set a limit to bring younger talent into the sport?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Heck no. I believe there are a dozen drivers with more starts than either of them. And Gordon remains competitive, so no need to think he should step down based on a number.

Marian (Florida)

Do you think the new gen6 car is as safe as last years? It seems like more drivers are getting hurt this year

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

As safe or safer. Weird stuff has happened.

Michael (Wisconsin)

Your top 10 for darlingtion?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

How about top 5: Gordon, Edwards, Kyle Busch, Johnson and Kenseth.

Bill (CT)

To all the people whining about Brad, they may want to go to his site and see an apology letter. Hes human and got it wrong. But at least hes man enough to admit that to millions.

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Yep, already have informed.

Dave (OH)

RCR likes Kurt? Do you have a source for that? I know RC doesn't like Kyle.

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

RC will tell you he likes Kurt.

Saul (San Diego)

Amirola is in 7th, do you think he will be able to get the 43 into the chase?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

As well as he's running, not convinced he will be able to keep it up to make the Chase.

Anthony (Fort Wayne, IN)

Newt do you think Nascar should mandate Lights everyone of its race tracks?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Only if NASCAR is willing to pitch in and help pay for them.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Going to cut this chat short today folks. Need to write a newser on Keselowski's apology and be ready for the final verdict on the Penske appeal. Thanks for hanging out and keeping me entertained during the appeal. Made time fly by faster.
