Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:01 PM)

Greetings everyone. Thank you for your interest and support.

Brad (Nashville)

If Kenny Britt stays out of legal trouble, doesn't get hurt, and has a good year on the field, do you think he gets a new contract?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:02 PM)

I don't think he will get one from the Titans, no. Not if the current regime remains in place.

Jeff (Indy)

Do the terms of conditional draft picks in trades ever get found out? What will the Colts get for Shipley?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:05 PM)

We'll find out eventually. It's not going to be more than a sixth, I wouldn't think.

Beau (Chattanooga)

Wyatt just tweeted L. Hawkins signed by the Pats for 2 years. Did TN under utilize him do you reckon?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

I don't reckon, no. He was unreliable. That'll go over big in New England.

John [via mobile]

If the Titans and Freeny agree in a deal, what do you expect him to contribute to their team? Will he have a better season than he did last year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

They aren't even talking to Freeney as far as we know.

Aaron (Jacksonville)

Marcus Trufant, nickelback?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

Probably. Or depth.

Robert (Lexington, KY)

22K when you posted the evenifhesreleased.com article. Now they're at 57k. Good job PK and BCB!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

Good for them.

Blueman (Indy)

Is trading AQ Shipley a sign they think Holmes is ready to play now,if Satale is injury riddled like last year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

How could it not be saying that?

Shaun (TN)

Lets say the Titans sign one of the three DEs they have looked out. Would that person be a backup or would they possibly take Wimbley's place?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

Starting is overrated. If the newcomer played run downs to allow Wimbley to rush, I wouldn't say he'd be replacing Wimbley. I think Wimbley keeps a very similar role. Also, they've looked at two Israel Idonije and John Abraham.

Shaun (TN)

Any news about the Titans signing any of the FAs they have been bringing in. Heard Clayton mention of the radio the other day he expected Abraham to be signed by the end of the week. Any legs to that story?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:09 PM)

Where there is news, it's not going to break in a chat.

Bryan (Indy)

So the Colts just traded AQ Shipley to the Ravens. Like thought AQ fit in well at center when Samson Satele seemed to be injured the a decent amount of the year last year. With AQ being traded can Colts fans expect recent draft choice Khaled Holmes from USC to be a stud?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:10 PM)

Shipley wasn't a stud. He was a fill-in who fared better than Satele. Holmes>Shipley.

Dan (Marin County, Calif)

With the Titans coming out and saying they are going to be a run first team, is that an indication of a lack of confidence in Lockers skills?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

Not as much as it's an indication of their excitement over Johnson and Greene running behind the revamped line and a desire to keep the ball longer so the defense doesn't have to be on the field so much.

TL (Jacksonville)

Bring back Daryl Smith for another year or two? I say, yes! One injured year should not prevent him from playing again, assuming he has recovered from the injury.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:13 PM)

Jaguars are not currently interested.

Nathan (Nashville)

The health of C. McCarthy has been a issue to this point in his career is there any discussion to have one of the OLB's compete to start at ILB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

I think Fokou is the alternative.

Jon (Jacksonville)

Will the Jags be better off without Daryl Smith?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

Not in the short run, no.

Andy (Tennessee)

The Titans didn't do all that much to change their defense in the offseason, but they have to be better than they were last year. Right? Would that explain their lack of movement toward defense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:17 PM)

Hill and Pollard, two new starters. Wreh-Wilson a potential new starter. Wilson probably plays in sub package and ranks as 13th guy on defense. Edwards can be a rotational contributor on the D-line. That's hardly no change. Gregg Williams can be a big change. A better offense an have a big influence. They'll be better.

Beau (Chattanooga)

Who'd you like to see on Hard Knocks this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:17 PM)

Unlike many pundits, I don't think it has to be some marquee team to be interesting. The view behind the scenes is interesting with ANY team.

Garrison Shepard (Crestwood, KY)

Where are the Colts going to find their longterm replacement for Reggie Wayne? Clearly he can't play forever, so will it be next years draft? A little surprised it wasn't addressed this year...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

Probably next year's draft. They have high hopes for DHB.

Aaron (Jacksonville)

So who are the Jaguars linebackers this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:19 PM)

Paul Posluszny, Russell Allen and Geno Hayes, I'd expect.

Patrick (Hudson, Florida)

Do you think that the Colts will be using more traditional 3-4 concepts this year (instead of the hybrid)since they have made a huge effort getting more 3-4 guys? I recall Freeney and Mathis with their hands on the ground 90-95% of the time last year. The linebackers are still undersized in my opinion.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

There hand wasn't on the ground nearly that often. With more 3-4 people, Colts still a hybrid

Nate Washington (TN)

What are the odds that I'm still with the Titans on opening day?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

I'd say 71 percent.

Joe (Houston)

AFC South Rookie of the Year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

Luke Joeckel.

Dave (Earth)

I know that D. Robinson will be utilized at multiple positions, but where do you see his "primary" role?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

Change-up running back.

Bryan (Nashville, TN)

You made a comment about there being a big gap between the Jags and the other teams in our division, including the Titans. Unless Locker makes huge stides this off season, I don't think there is that much of a gap. I also think the gap will get even smaller by the time we start playing our division games in the second half of the season. What say you, Mr. K?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

I say there is a gap that's grown. Yes, Titans QB is unproven like the Jags. But the Titans added a ton this offseason. The top guard in free agency. Quality veteran TE, DT, SS (2), changeup RB. Drafted another top guard and a potential very good WR. That is way, way more that will change the Titans than what the Jags added will change the Jags, personnel-wise.

Garrison Shepard (Crestwood, KY)

Do you filter these questions personally and pick out the ones you like, or do you have someone help you with that?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

All my choosing.

Dave (Earth)

What are your thoughts on Matt Scott? Does he make it?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:27 PM)

Intriguing. Has a chance. Do they keep three?

TNTitans74 (Indy)

Do, you think the aggressiveness in FA is a product of the Titans coaching staff starting off on the hot seat or is this something we may see more of with Webster as GM?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:27 PM)

If they are successful at it with this big batch, then they don't need a big batch annually.

Mo (Boston)

It seems like Munchak sees himself as more of a "administrator" than coach. When Palmer was OC we were tending towards a pass heavy team. Now with Loggains they are indicating they will be run first team. Does Munchak not have any philosophy as to what a team coached by him ought to do? Or he just lets his OC and DC dictate the make up of his team?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:29 PM)

Most coaches let their coordinators coordinate, with guidance unless said coach is functionally coordinating one side of the ball (like Kubiak with Houston's offense). He's more than an administrator for sure. Munchak's hands were tied when he hired Palmer -- he had few options because he was hired late. He let Palmer do his thing, though it probably wasn't his first choice. Loggains offense will be more the offense Munchak himself prefers.

TL (Jacksonville)

There was a debate raging on the comment boards about whether Eugene Monroe is in the plans for the Jaguars' future. I think he would have to be, and that you have for the next four years bookend top-flight OT's. What do you think or have you heard from your sources one way the other?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

I haven't heard and a year removed they don't know. They need to see guys compete and play before they judge them. I think Jaguars fans overrate Monroe a bit.

Adam (Louisville, KY)

A lot of blogs have been pretty high on the selection of K. Williams out of Utah St. for the Colts. How do you see him being used? A Percy Harvin type back out of the backfield? Or strictly return guy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

A change up running back and returner.

Mr. Shaub (Houston)

Who's gonna throw more TD's this year, me or Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

Luck.

ENFIDL (Northern, VA)

If Locker struggles how many games do they give him before plugging in Fitzpatrick? With Munch's job on the line I find this angle quite intriguing

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

Very close to 16.

Dave (Earth)

Does Gabbert make a significant improvement this season now that he has a more "permanent" coaching staff and an improved o-line and a few more weapons? I hope for the best for him, but at the same time, I can't deal with these losing seasons anymore...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

You're probably gong to have to continue to deal. I think he may be better, but not so much better that he's a long-term answer. I imagine they will be in the market next year.

Cole (H-Town)

Best food @ LP Stadium?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

Probably in the club sections. Nowhere I've had any.

Oot (Silver Spring, MD)

Who do you find a more intriguing prospect in terms of versatility? Ace Saunders or Shoelace?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:35 PM)

Am I to presume Shoelace is Denard Robinson? I don't know who Shoelace is. Always safer to speak in real names.

TL (Jacksonville)

Coke or Pepsi?Diet or Regular?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:35 PM)

Coke Zero. Though I am trying to lay off the caffeine.

Mo (Boston)

How many Titans rookies start this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

Warmack for sure. Schwenke, I'd hope. Wreh-Wilson maybe. Three at most.

Hanson (DC)

With all the Locker questions is he the most pivotal player in AFCS this year? How much he improves dictates how much the team improves?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

I'd say that's fair.

John [via mobile]

Will the Texans move Reed inside and how screwed are they if Cushing can't be the same player he was before the injury?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

It's your lucky day. A column addressing the Texans linebacker situation is scheduled to pop up in the blog in a little while. [And here it is.]

CJ2K (Ridin on Dubs)

Who's gettin more yards this year, me or AP?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

It's AD (as in All Day) not AP. AD by a mile.

Money (Honduras)

Hey paul, who in the texans secondary do you think will take the lead for nickel and dime packages.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:38 PM)

Brice McCain is nickel and D.J. Swearinger is dime, I would think.

Mo (Boston)

Will Morgan post double digit sacks this year? He has been solid in past year and has been graded well in PFF. Given that, and also contract year, do you reckon he breaks out this year? And if so, how high do you think he might go in sacks (even though admittedly that stat is overblown in importance)?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:38 PM)

I would think he's got a good chance at double digit sacks if coverage improves.

P Manning. (Denver)

Just perused an article about my pie in the face antics. What is your favorite prank of my Paul?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

Does the time you called me Pete in a press conference count?

Mario (Indy)

Typically QBs have a second year slump, do you see that with Luck at all this year with a much more challenging schedule ahead?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

I fully expect Luck to pick up where he left off.

Young (Indy)

Do you think we will see Montori Hughes play some DE this yr or is he strictly nose gaurd?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Possible but not probable that he plays anything but nose.

adam (indiana)

does franklin or chapman start at NT at the start of the season this year for the colts

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

I think Franklin is likely to start and be a primary run-down guy.

Paul (Indy)

Please rank the front offices of each team in the division.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:41 PM)

Very hard to argue against many of the decisions the Texans have made in the last couple years. They are one. Grigson and Colts are two. Titans three. Can't rank the Jaguars yet with so little to go on.

John [via mobile]

Why did Ed Reed wait until now for surgery? Was he hiding the injury or just strategic on his part to avoid all of these mini camps?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

I believe he waited until it wasn't getting better and they deemed surgery necessary. He's not trying to avoid OTAs and minicamp.

Brian (Indianapolis)

Why do people compare new colts OLB Bjorn to JJ Watts? Watts is a few inches taller and about 20lbs heaver. The only thing I see they have in common is the ability to swat down balls.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

It's Watt. I haven't heard that comparison once. I've head Paul Kruger as the Werner comparison.

Grant B. (Franklin)

If Locker does not progress, do the Titans go after FA Jay Cutler this offseason

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

I can't predict the Titans plans for a year out as they don't know what they are yet, and we don't know who will be making the decisions then yet.

Dave (Jacksonville, FL)

Paul, why do you pick questions to answer that you either don't answer or have a wishy-washy answer?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

I've only got so much to pick from. I'm sorry if you are unhappy with my choices or my answers.

Cthulu (Nashville)

Do you think that Michael Griffin will improve with Pollard or Wilson at SS or do you anticipate him getting replaced in the line-up? He's been suspect at best the past few years.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

Who would he be replaced by? I expect he'll be better. If he's not better, this should be his last year.

Jonathan (Nashville, TN) [via mobile]

In the event that Bud Adams was to pass away - who will run the team? I've heard he's got a grandson in the organization, not sure how viable a choice that is though.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

There is a plan in place, but no one knows what the plan is. The grandson won't be running the team anytime soon. I'm not sure he's 30 yet.

Dave (Earth)

So I remember there being talk about a practice dome for the Jags last season. Saw that it rained most of the rookie camp. Any near-future plans you've heard of? Are the calls for the indoor facility as "loud" as they were last off-season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

Haven't checked in on it lately, but it was definitely in a later phase of the plan that started off with the locker room expansion.

NEil (NYC)

Not sure if you've addressed this but why did the Jags pass on Geno (rd 2), and then Nassib/Barkley (rd 4?). I feel like with such a gaping hole there is is hard to justify skipping those potential starting QBs. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:47 PM)

Like most teams in the draft, they didn't feel like those guys were good enough to warrant those picks. So instead of bringing in an addition QB who's hardly a sure thing, they addressed other needs. Smart, in my opinion.

Steve (San Antonio)

What are your own thoughts on the Shipley trade? Grigson seems ripe for some valid criticism on this move. Can we expect an article in your AFCSouth Blog on this?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

He drafted Khalid Holmes. Who should be better than Satele or Shipley, making the whole thing moot. Who needs three centers?

Al (Wausau, WI)

Paul, what do you think will be the role of T.Y. Hilton in the Colts' offense in 2013? Might he send up as a starting WR by late in the season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

Could easily be a starter who kicks inside in three-wide. Depends as much on DHB as Hilton.

HG (Oboro KY)

If Britt has big year do they franchise him to attempt milk out more ability before his inevitable downfall and waste of talent?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

WR franchise number is a lot of money and it's guaranteed once he signs it and he wouldn't be happy with it because it's not long-term. I wouldn't predict that's something that will happen.

Paul (Indy)

What player will the improvement of the Colts D be most dependent upon?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

That's a good question. But it's hard to pin it on one guy. That's why they made several moves. They really tried to get better at run defense. So they need to be a lot better at run defense.

Tim Tebow (Unemployment Line)

I'm done talking about me, tell me how improved you think the Colts' D line is. I hear all about how the Titans' O-line is the most improved unit in the division if not all of football, but I fear the Colts' underappreciated (not by you of course) moves will wreak havoc on the rest of AFCS

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:52 PM)

I like it run-stopping-wise. I'm not so sure about pass rush.

Quansu (Indianapolis)

Most overrated and underrated player in the division?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:57 PM)

I think Titans DT Jurrell Casey and Texans CB Kareem Jackson are underrated. I think Jaguars LT Eugene Monroe and Titans RB Chris Johnson are overrated.

Rex (Indy)

PK... Do you think the upgrades to the Colts defense will be shown on the field this year as one of the strongest defenses in the league? Or will it take some time for the boys to build some chemistry together and see a more stout defense in the following season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

They were 26th in the NFL last year. A jump to 16 would be very good. "One of the strongest" is too optimistic.

ENFIDL (Northern, VA)

Casey is a monster! What can the Titans do around him to help out on the line more? What are your thoughts on Abraham and Freeney?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

Sammie Hill should help a lot.

James (Jax)

I asked John Osher if you two were bitter rivals b/c you both do live chats on Thursdays. This was his response "Osher: I wouldn't say bitter, but as much as I like him and as often as I text and call and email, Kuharsky dislikes me a great deal. If he has a real problem, he knows where to find me." What say you Paul? You guys got beef?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

He's completely kidding. We're long-time friends. I respect his work a great deal. I never hear from him. And I can't understand his chat scheduling.

Hanson (DC)

Do the Texans have any sort of backup plan should their rookie wr not pick up the NFL game quick enough to be their no.2 wr?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

Their names are Keshawn Martin and Lestar Jean.

Steven (texas)

Who is your favorite defensive rookie in the afc south to watch this upcoming year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:02 PM)

Two safeties: Cyprien in Jacksonville and Swearinger in Houston.

David (Portales, NM)

Bigger gap...Between Colts and Texans or between Texans and AFC favorites Denver and New England?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:03 PM)

I think unquestionably B.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:06 PM)

You guys get it done. Thanks for coming. Appreciate your interest.
