Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Let's get rolling.

Pa. Raider (Pennsylvania)

Afternoon Sir, Lets get a Raiders question in first, do you see them going after any of the remaining free agents who are out there to fill in their holes on the D. Line, Secondary & Off. Line?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

I think we will see Oakalnd look at several players between now and camp. We've seen Cribbs and a couple of punters this week. That will continue.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

Hi Bill, if Starks is signed is he automatically the starter at LT or will he compete with King Dunlap?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I think he'd go in as the starter, yes. No question.

Ryan McMaster (McMaster)

Bill, I'm a raiders fan through and through, but i cant help but to admire some of the leaders on different teams, especially someone like Drew Brees. The way he vamps up his team before games is incredible. Do you see someone in Oakland stepping up into that leadership role and getting the guys fired up? and if so whon in particular?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

We have to see what Flynn brings to the table as a leader.

robert (palmdale)

Will the raiders rookie mini camp this weekend tell us anything about how they will do this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

Nah. It's just time to get these guys to together. There is a zillion practices between now and Week 1. I was laughing last week when their were reports about this rookie or that rookie looking good. Well, it's May and they are facing other rookies. A top pick better look good in these settings.

Tony Ellsworth (Omaha, NE)

Bill, Robert Ayers is a first round draft choice. How much confidence do you think Fox and Elway have on him to turn in a banner year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

He's played a lot. They knows what he brings. He is a solid run stopper. On the whole, he is decent, not great. The Denver brass knows that.

Tony Ellsworth (Omaha, NE)

Bill, do you think Monte Ball starts by midseason? This would put McGahee and the other RB's into role backs. How do you see it playing out?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

If I had to guess, yes, I think Ball is the starter by midseason. Probably even sooner.

Ed (Orlando)

Is there any chance we will ever see a SuperBowl played again during the daytime? I prefer football under the sun then under the lights. Or has the commercialization of it prevents that from happening again?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

It's all about the money, so, I say no.

Ed (Orlando)

If Flynn happens to become a surprise top notch QB, how many games could you see the Raiders winning?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

Well, top-notch QBs win a ton of games. So, if he's top notch, life will be good in Oakland.

Merle (Colorado)

A lot has been made locally about PFM wanting Brandon Stokely back, but I dont see a fit. Do you?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

If Welekr gets hurt, there's a fit.

cesar (merida, mexico)

positions do you think the raiders improve in this offseason? huge fan of your blog

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

Thanks ... I'd say Cornebrack. It's was awful last year. It's no longer awful. It is a very workable NFL situation.

Your Name (Your Location)

Better LBS SD or OAK?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

Right now? San Diego. Not real close.

Glenn (St. Joe)

Are the Chiefs looking at free agents, or are they pretty comfortable, particularly MLB, or WR.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

They will probably look some depth guys here and there, but the Chiefs have already put in a lot of work this year. They did well.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

Hi Bill, who do you expect to the other Safety alongside Weddle for the chargers, is it Taylor, Gilchist, Lynch, or even Jammer?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Right now, I'd say Taylor or Gilchrist.

Albert (Arizona)

Any news on the Max Starks situation with San Diego?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

No, but I wouldn't be surprised if something happens soon.

frank (florida)

I know the Broncos are penciled in for the AFC crown, but do you think the AFC will become the Wild west again if Manning gets injured?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Of course. He's the difference maker. You show what happened in the AFC South two years ago. Denver has a nice roster. But if the best player in the division goes down, all bets are off.

Robert (Englewood)

Do you think that Ayers can fill the void left by Doom when he left?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

On running downs. It's Phillips' gig on passing downs.

Brian (Oklahoma)

In your opinion, have the Raiders improved in terms of talent since last year, and will that translate to a better record than 4-12?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

Don't know what. Still a lot of holes. Need to see them.

kevin (tampa, fl)

will reid and alex smith get baldwin going this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

Reid will put a lot of time in with Baldwin. This is a huge year. Kid has skills. Need to show it on the field.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

Hi Bill, with some many options at WR for the chargers (Floyd, Alexander, Brown, Meachem, Royal, Allen) how will they split the playing time?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

If everyone stays healthy, I think we will see Allen. Brown and Alaxander getting a lot of playing time once the season gets going.

kevin (tampa, fl)

can new draftee cummings push lewis for starting job at safety?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Eventually, but he needs to show he can handle the NFL first.

Ryan McMaster (Sicklerville, NJ)

Alright Bill i got another one. Of all the names Oakland has brought in, rookies and vets, who do you think will have the biggest impact? Can we expect these players to really give it their all now that there is money to spend next season too?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Good question. Give me a second to think it out. cue Jeopardy music.

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

Rookie; Hayden.Vet: Nick Roach.

Mike t (PA)

Do you think Tyler Wilson can be an effective starter in the NFL?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Well, he has potential. He has skills. But he is young and he ahs to develop. But he has a chance, yes.

ibetonart (O)

Without a "TRUE" 4-3 DE on the roster I could see Oakland go 3-4 more often than not or am I crazy? I mean they have the players Burris and Moore could provide a better pass rush than any 4-3 DE they have? Well Hunter is a 4-3 DE I think?Burris, Roach, Burnett, Moore and MaiavaI think Sims is like 335 and could play NT with Walker and Houston as 3-4DEs

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I'm with you. You are not crazy, fine sir. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Mario (San Diego)

Hi Bill, Do you see SD moving Gilchrist to Saftey or bringing back Jammer and putting him there?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Gilchrist is up for it. I think it could happen.

Not a Chiefs fan (Not KC)

Love the blog BW, How smart is it drafting a Right Tackle with the #1 pick?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

Thanks, sir.I think the selection of Eric Fihser was the right call, yes. Best player available. The NFL is changing. Get good players at tackle, regardless. But he may very soon be at left tackle, anway. It was a good pick.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

Hi Bill, the chargers didn't draft a pass rusher till the 6th round, does that mean Larry English will get meaningful snaps or has that ship sailed and he wont make the team?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

Nah, I don't think it had anyhting to do with English. Whatever they get out of him, they get out of him. He was the problem of the old regime and they were fired. English is off scholarship.

Pa. Raider (Pennsylvania)

Saw a story about the possibility of Richard Seymour coming back to the Raiders, I find this hard to believe, your thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

We disucssed it on the blog. I doubt he comes back, but never say never.

Jake from state farm (upstate)

the Chiefs receiving core is weak, anyone we can get to make us better

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

With Avery and if Baldin and McCluster develoip under Reid, it can be fine.

Geoff (Pennsburg, PA)

What do you think the odds are that the Chiefs get a long term deal done with Brandon Albert before the season starts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I'd say 50-50. Both sides are open to the idea.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

Hi Bill, is the fact the chargers didn't draft a RB in the most recent draft a vote of confidence towards Ryan Mathews or simply the circumstances didn't work out to draft an RB?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

They ahd more pressing needs. They are deep at the position. If Mathews fails in 2013, the Chargers will look for a new lead back next year.

Taylor (FL )

More significant, potentially impactful off-season development for DEN: losing Dumervil or gaining Welker?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Welker. I'd be a lot closer if Von Miller wasn't in Denver.

kevin (tampa, fl)

will berry explode in suttons defense?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

He can explode under any DC. Special guy.

Ryan McMaster (Sicklerville, NJ)

Bill, im on a roll now. Alright so what do you expect out of Denarius Moore? Can he really be the number one guy? Also, how do you see Oakland's receivers lining up on the outside/inside?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

He is a good player. Not sure if he is a No. 1 yet. He was inconsistnmet at times last season. But he can certainly hel Oakland regarddess if he becomes a true No. 1.

Isaac (Appleton WI)

What do you think about the Broncos first round pick Williams

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Appleton, used to live there when I covered the Packers. Love that town.Really like the Wiliams' pick. Some scouts that he was a top-15 guy. Really helped the defense with that choice.

ibetonart (O)

I think Oakland has one of the worst DE situations in football. I love Houston but he is really a 4-3 DT not a 4-3 DE. There are no free agent options really, so should Oakland go 3-4 to get pass rush from OLBs Burris and Moore?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I'd like to see an estbalished guy there.

trevor (kc)

any intrest in cribbs going to KC to replace arenas for returns?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

They have McCluster and Wylie.

Craig (PA)

As a Raider fan, should the only "roster battle" i be concerned about be Clowney vs. Bridgewater?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

I'm not sure if it will be quite that bad.

ibetonart (O)

Who do you think has a higher ceiling Pryor or Flynn or Wilson?Pryor to me, 6'4 230 4.4 speed strong arm albeit innacurate needs coaching, but some people like mediocre sized, and mediocre armed QBs, so to each their own if so Flynn and Wilson are a great pair.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

WIlson. He has a solid NFl skill set.

Ben (Charlotte)

it seems like an idiotic idea, but Titus Young is still a young, talented WR albeit with a ton on of baggage. Chiefs look pretty thin to me after Bowe ... would they take a chance on this kid?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

"Idiotic" was your word choice, friend. But, yes, I'd agree. No one is going to touch that kid until he he proves he can be trusted. That will take a while.

George (Fresno)

So Bill, we're 2 weeks out from the draft and have had time to analyze and study each teams picks? Has your opinion changed and what team do you see having the best draft in terms of impact players that will contribute immediately?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I think they all did really well. I think the Chargers did the best.

Bert (St. Paul, MN)

At 6'3", 220 lbs, running a sub-par 4.4 40 yard dash, and a straight up running style, should we just put goggles on Latarius Murray and call him a poor man's Eric Dickerson?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Seriously? We are comparing a sixth-round pick to a Hall of Famer two weeks after he was picked.Murray could potentially be good. But come on, let's wait a tad.

WyattBurp (Detroit)

Was DJ Fluker the right 1st round draft pick for San Diego?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

In that circumstance, yes.

Allen (Louisiana)

How much improvement do you Run DMC will have going back to the power blocking scheme?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

It fits him. The key with him is the health.

Dontorrious (Hempstead)

Is Tony Bergstrom a lost cause, or does he have a chance to start for the Raiders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

No. He's young. He was drafted for the ZBS. But he will be given a chance.

frank (florida)

Last year you picked the Chiefs to win the AFC west, and on paper they look great. But do you think they will become fools gold again?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

Thanks for the reminder.

bradon (sandy)

if it came down to it do the broncos keep decker or thomas?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

Thomas is a special player.

Derek (Bristol, VA)

Bill, do you see the Chargers being a dark-horse to get in the playoffs, or do they need a little more work before we can talk about playoffs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

I think they need to get better on the o-line and in the secondary.

Derek (Lawrence, KS)

Will Kelce play more than Fasano?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

I think they are high on Kelce. If he develops quickly,he will play a lot.

Dan A. (Rocheter, NY)

How would you rank the OLines in the AFCW?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

We will address that soon on the blog.

Cotton (NorCal)

Do you see Terrell Pryor getting a fair shot at competing for the starting QB job in Oakland?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

If he is awesome, he will play. But he has to show it.

Jimmy (New York, NY)

Does it make sense to put Fluker at LT and move Starks/Dunlap to RT? I see him playing LT better than those two.

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

I think Fluker is best suited at RT. They will get by at LT this year and then answer the long-term question in 2014.

Diego (Watts)

Is Tyvon Branch a difference-maker in the secondary? Through all the turmoil, he is the one face that has remained

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

He's solid, for sure. Not elite. But solid.

Derek (Lawrence, KS)

Who will play more Cyrus Gray or Knile Davis?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Davis will get first crack. He was a third-round pick of the new regime. Gray was a late-round pick of the old regime. Simple as that. Davis gets first crack.

david (illinois)

what do you think of woodson coming back to the raiders and play safety?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I think he wants to play for a cotender. But we will see.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

Bill, Ladarius Green forgotten talent, what to expect of a raw TE, but also 6'6 245 Lbs 4.5 speed athletes don't grow on trees?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

No, he's not forgetton. He has a chance. He has ability.

Mexican Raider( Monterrey Mx ) [via mobile]

What are you opinion about the OL and TE on Oakland ? I think they are lower than average ?

Ryan McMaster (Sicklerville, NJ)

BW. Now that you've said DJ Hayden will have the biggest impact on rookies, wheres the better fit for him? On the outside or in the nickel?

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

O-line has the makings of a good line in the future. They are totally starting over at tight end.On Hayden: Outside. He's a starter.

Bill Williamson
  (3:03 PM)

Great hour. Talk to you next week.
