Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

  (1:01 PM)

Wassup? Deep inside my Research Department this afternoon, but I taking the next hour to answer questions about Cowboys, Mavs and Rangers. Or whatever else might be on your mind. Let's roll.

John T. Gold (Salt Lake City)

Hey JJT thanks for your work and I hope you took care of the mothers in your life this past weekend. Do the Cowboys think the 4-3 will help the abysmal rush defense? Hard to think they won't get pushed around with 250-260 pound defensive ends. Your thoughts?

  (1:05 PM)

It's the ultimate hypothetical. Really, who knows. Yes, I think they'll get pushed around, but maybe they won't. You just have to wait for the answer

Mike Ho (Hong Kong)

Hi JJT, do you think Martin Perez will take one of the rookies rotation spots once he's ready?

  (1:06 PM)

probably, but it's not like Martin Perez has done ANYTHING to earn a spot in the rotation. If he pitches well in minors he'll get a shot, but Tepesch and Grimm are holding it down right now

Dave (Novato)

How do you think Alexi Ogando will do as the season goes on? I'm not sure he will hold up.

  (1:11 PM)

I love the complete and total overreaction as it relates to Ogando. Do you realize he's allowed 3 or fewer runs in 7 of 8 starts? In 6 of 8 starts, he's allowed 2 or fewer earned runs. Do you realize he has yet to allow more hits than IP in ANY start tis season? He's a solid pitcher. He's not as good as Holland or Yu, so he always looks shady if you're comparing him to them, when they're pitching well. Ogando is fine. And if he was the 4th pitcher instead of 3rd like he would be if Harrison was pitching, then this rotation would be a beast

Candy (Slippery Rock)

When do you think we will see Neftali Feliz again and how is Colby Lewis doing?

  (1:12 PM)

Colby has triceps tendinitis so his program has slowed a little. Feliz is doing OK and is on track, I believe, but until he starts a rehab program it's hard to know when and if he'll be back this season.

Mark (Cary, NC)

Hello JJT !!! Everyone keeps stating after June 1 Dallas will be trolling for a Right Tackle to replace Free - but do you see them looking for help on the DLine as well?

  (1:13 PM)

if there's some DT who can help them in the bargain bin, they'll be shopping. If not, they'll deal with it next year

pj (midlo)

Hi Jean-Jacques, how soon until Rangers call up Profar and where do they play him (no use to have him sit at young age)

  (1:14 PM)

Have you found somewhere for him to play? Kinsler has been easily the best offensive player on this team and Mitch Moreland is out of his mind at first base. The Rangers need him to accelerate his game so they can add a bat or a starter at the deadline

Greg (CT)

How much better do you expect oline to be this year?

  (1:17 PM)

Hard to quantify in May. I will say that if they can go through TC without any significant injury issues - Livings, Bernadeau and Costa each missed a chunk of camp - they will be better just from a continuity standpoint. The line is a lot about rhythm and comfort. All of that takes time

Will Ratliff be suspended this year as a 1st time offender?

  (1:17 PM)

i wouldn't think so. But we don't know if he was in program. If he was, then he might be fined and we'd never know.

Alexis (Dallas TX)

What do the Mavs need to do to become once again a Playoff Caliber team?

  (1:18 PM)

they need a superstar. Or a rising star. Why did Golden State take off? Steph Curry became a star. It ain't complicated

Thomas (tx)

What type of signing bonus will fredrick and escobar get?

  (1:20 PM)

No idea off the top of my head. If you really want to know i'd Go to, go to the draft center and look up the players taken in their spots last year. Google the contracts they received last year. And add 10 percent. That shud put u in the ballpark

Michael (green wood in)

hey JJT im hearing alot of people raving about the bw webb kid, was he that impressive and could scandrick be in danger long term?

  (1:21 PM)

I don't RAVE about ANYBODY in a camp where dudes weren't wearing full pads. That's just me. If he can play, I'd say this is Orlando Scandrick's last year on the team

Ben (ATL)

I've heart conflicting things in regards to this subject: Will Carr, and Claiborne's press coverage skill set go to waste in Kiffin's Dallas-2 scheme, or do you think the scheme/coaching will capitalize on them?

  (1:22 PM)

they're planning to use a lot of man-in-zone principles. You can never go wrong by having too many good players. The staff must maximize their ability

Eric (Long beach)

Whom will the cowboys use at defensive end if theres a injury ?

  (1:23 PM)

Can we at least wait until we get to TC. They're still shuffling players in and out every few days right now. Tyron Crawford, for now, will be the top backup at both end spots.

Rah (Home)

Could Dallas Mavs afford two max contracts? and do you like Josh howard enough to bring him here?

  (1:23 PM)

Don't think so. I don't believe that's an issue. They're not signing Howard and Chris Paul

Ian (Denver, CO)

Why can't I quit the Cowboys? It's ground hogs day every season with no hope for the near future. Should I switch to the Donkeys?

  (1:23 PM)

it's an addiction lots of folks have. You're not alone.

andre gibson your cousin (nashville)

do you think that romo whould have got that type of moneywith another team and when do you see dallas returning to superbowl form

  (1:25 PM)

I believe this is the second time in chat history one of my relatives has sent me a Romo probably could've gotten more $$ as a FA because Minnesota and Arizona woul;d've each broken the bank to get him. Neither has a QB. You can add Buffalo and Oakland and Cleveland to the mix too. That many teams and someone would've given him more $$ than you can conceive

Nic (TX)

Two things for you to forecast:1. Starting Cowboys OL on week 12. Rangers rotation just after the ASG Break

  (1:26 PM)

I'm not doing the first one cause we're in May. 2) Yu, Holland, Ogando, Tepesch, Lewis

Jeremy (Arlington)

I know this is more of in the future than the now, but I'm just curious, when Feliz is ready to return if its this year what is his role with the team? setup? long man?

  (1:27 PM)

depends on his health and how other dudes. Right now, he'd be a 7th innig guy with Robbie Ross. Scheppers in the 8 and Nathan in 9

KB (Romos 106 million $pen)

a lot of hype coming everyone about escobar I think hes already passed hanna on the depth chart with only one ball and guys like dez miles witten murray randle and escobar even harris where does terrance w fit in? has he surpassed harris already with a 3rd round pick on him?

  (1:29 PM)

y'all want all of these answers after a 3-day ROOKIE minicamp. I can't give them. Roles won't be determined until TC. Harris played so well down the stretch that he should be ahead of Williams and Beasley. Now, though, we might actually have a group of 5-6 receivers that can actually all play

James (Dallas)

Thanks for doing these chats JJT, the Cowboys history with effectively running the two tight end sets Patriots style hasn't been so effective. They've got Escobar who apparently might have had the second best hands in the draft among tight ends according to some, do you think they can use him and Witten effectively to stretch the field or in the red zone where they tend to struggle?

  (1:32 PM)

They've had some success with it just not as much as they envisioned. Marty B was a really good blocker so they had more success running out of 2 TE. They hope Escobar is good enough to force teams to play nickel because he'll misuse LBs. Then they can run the ball because he can block a S. He has good hands, so they hope he'll help them in the red zone whether he's catching balls or opening it up for Witten and Dez

Mac (CT)

"It's clear by Tony Romo's hefty contract extension that Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett value the position of quarterback." That's a quote from an article you wrote this week, but just last week you said they don't value the QB position, which one is more accurate?

  (1:33 PM)

pretty sure I wrote That's the example the Cowboys use to justify they value the position. The fact 82 QBs have been taken since 2007 and Dallas has grabbed just one indicates they don't. Since 1989, 301 QBs drafted and Dallas has taken 3. Another indication they don't value the position

Ben (ATL)

Where do you see Doug Free in 3 weeks?

  (1:34 PM)

In dallas. This is game of chicken. He's tripping if he think s he can get more money in the open market

Frank (NY)

Best RB WR WR TE combo in the East? im thinking Dallas has the best combo, your thoughts?

  (1:37 PM)

i don't really like your question because it seems like it's set up for us to say the DC. Why don't we just say who has the best offense.I'd say Wash, NYG, Philly and Dallas. When RG3 is healthy the Skins run it and throw it better than anyone else. The NYG have an ID they throw the ball long and make big plays, the Cowboys have explosive offense but between penalties and Romo's mistakes they have a lot of bad plays. We have no idea what Philly will look like but they have more talent than Dallas

KB (Romos 106 million $pen)

barry church has the lock down at SS but what about at free? is that matt johnsons to loose or does will allen or a guy like Hamilton or Wilcox have a chance?

  (1:38 PM)

The Cowboys' scheme doesn't really call for FS and SS per se. None of these guys have played. It's wide open going into camp. Laying odds, I'd say Church and Johnson will start, but who knows if those guys are healthy

  (1:42 PM)

great chat today. Looking forward to next week's conversation.

  (1:42 PM)

U can always hit me on twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas or my fan page on Facebook with questions

raul (rio grande city)

JJT, is Dallas on to something good with this kid Jakar Hamilton? Why was he not drafted if they thought so much of him and Magee too?

  (1:43 PM)

there are only 7 rounds. Lots of guys don't get drafted because they don't run fast enough or they didn't play against great competition. The key is to get into a camp and let it ride.
