Welcome everyone and thanks for joining us today. Dog days of summer are approaching, but there is still a lot to talk about. Let's get right to it...
What College Football Players who are Making their 2013 Debut for Texas will be great for Texas?
What's up Chris. I think there are several freshmen who have a chance to be special. Darius James, Jake Raulerson, Jake Oliver, Antwuan Davis, Jacorey Warrick, etc. It wasn't a highly rated class but it's a class that fills needs very well.
how soon until UT makes the big offer to lure Shaka Smart to replace Coach Barnes? UT b-ball has fallen off the map!!
It's going to take a whole lot to get Shaka to Texas if UT indeed goes after him. He turned down UCLA in March and signed an extension through 2023.
What do attribute the hold up to on the DBs of this class on committing? Texas obviously has the track record of putting guys in the league. Akina is the best position coach.
A lot of Texas fans are worried about this, which is understandable. But I don't think there is too much to worry about. The state of Texas is so deep that even if they do miss on some of these guys they'll be just fine. One thing the recruits are waiting on is to see how Texas performs in 2013. A good year would solidify many of these guys' choices.
What is augie garrido's reasons for the huge and I mean huge drop off in results this season. This after the big 12 loses two if the better teams for baseball to the SEC.
This has to go down as one of the worst baseball seasons in program history. Pitching, as usual, was not the issue and was again among the best in the Big 12. Had second-best ERA. It comes down to hitting with this team. Second-worst hitting percentage, slugging percentage and OBP. 64 runs in conf. play were 11 fewer than Texas Tech, which finished with second-fewest runs. That's bad.
Do you think it was stupid of Mack Brown to give out Alamo Bowl "championship" rings or was it just stupid of him to announce it on twitter?
I don't think it was dumb for him to give out the rings but I may have left it off of social media. I would have left that for someone else to do. However, it was a big win and one he thinks could really help his team get off to a strong start in 2013. He's proud of the victory.
What freshmen & sophomores do you see turning into potential NFL caliber players?
J Gray, Malcom Brown, Peter Jinkens, Dalton Santos, Daje to name a few sophomores. I think Darius James, Kent Perkins, Jake Raulerson, Antwuan Davis, Deoundre Davis and Rami have good chances as well.
What will separate Texas from a Good defense to a Great defense?
Have to tackle better; have to get off to better starts; have to carry out gameplan, stay in gaps. I wouldn't be surprised to see Diaz simplify things a bit. He's got the athletes to have a sound defense. Texas really needs to have its safety step up and stay healthy at LB.
What player or players come out of Summer camp ready to make some noise heading into Fall and start the season?
What up Opy, I think Duke Thomas really showed a lot. Sheroid Evans made some noise and should supply the secondary with some much-needed depth. One guy to watch is Caleb Bluiett. Had a very good spring game. Depth at DE is OK but Texas could use another reliable end with the health history of Jeffcoat.
What kind of ceiling do you see for the younger set of Backers? Jinkens, Santos, Cole, etc?
Jinkens really doesn't have a ceiling. I truly believe he'll have a breakout year this season and emerge as one of the conference's best. He's hungry. Santos has dropped some weight and looks like he'll be in much better playing shape. Cole can really tackle. That's one of the things Texas loved about him coming out of Brenham. He's gotten markedly bigger too. I just don't know how much he'll fit into the rotation this season.
Is it possible for Tyrone Swoopes to win over the starting job this season if Ash continues to struggle.
I wouldn't slam the door shut on that idea but I think there are some guys in front of him that Texas would look at before it looked at Swoopes. Still believe he'd be much better off redshirting.
Do you think any of the incoming freshman WRs will see the field and be productive in doing so this fall? If so who has the best shot?
I do. I believe Jake Oliver will come in handy in third-down/goal line situations because of his size, blocking ability out wide (dude loves to block) and hands. As long as Warrick stays healthy he could make an impact but is going to have to prove that during fall camp.
Yo Sir William! What it do my man? Hope all is well with you and want to say you and the rest of the HornsNation crew are doing work bro..keep up the great work fellas. Quest. Do you think Derrick Robinson's commitment sticks? Sure hope he does man..have a great feeling he will be great for us if he commits to the good guys. Second quest. Mack Brown loses to OU again, who do we go for to replace Mack daddy? Shaw from standfard would be my 1st choice. Thanks for the time will..always cool to read your reply. Bless much.
Mike G always coming in with the high spirits. We appreciate it. As for your questions, I think Texas is really going to have to stay on Roberson this season in order for that to stick. But I think it will in the end. There is a chance for early PT. IDK if Texas losing to OU again would be a deal breaker for Mack but it certainly wouldn't help. I don't know if I see Shaw leaving Stanford though. He seems like a great fit there.
Is Manny Diaz the right guy to shore up this D in 2013?
He's going to have to be. I think he understands better than ever who his playmakers are and will put them in the best positions to succeed. Whether that's having Jenkins out there more, moving Diggs closer to the box, etc.
Which 2014 RB targets do we actually have a chance with?
Jamal Adams, Nick Watkins, Arrion Springs, Solomon Thomas, Darrion Johnson, Sione Teuhema, Vic, Joe Mixon, Adam Choice. Probably leaving out a few here.
In order to win the Big 12 in 2013, which position group must exceed expectations?
Good question. If I had a while to think about it I might come up with something different but, for now, I'd go with linebacker. There is a lot to prove here. Edmond had a good year in 2012 but not great. Will he elevate his game? Can Hicks stay healthy and return to Hicks form? How much does Santos play. Can he have as big an impact in every-down situations as he did on special teams? Can Peter Jinkens keep up the momentum he created last season? Tevin Jackson too?
What it do Will? Just wanted to give all you guys a big thanks for all the hard work yall do in keeping us in the loop on everything...Just one quick question i have for you. With Knox and Gresham decommitting within a couple of weeks are we going to see more decommits in the near future? i know that is hard to determine but what are your thoughts?
What it do Cullen, thanks for the compliments. They don't go unnoticed. Much appreciated. I do think that this will be a limited situation in terms of the commitments. I could possibly see one more but don't believe it will happen.
A number of publications, including Rivals, list OU's Damian Williams as the best RB in the 2014 draft. Are you buying or selling on Williams?
He's darn good but I'd take De'Anthony Thomas of Oregon first.
I can't help but be skeptical about this upcoming season. I would like to see DeLoss gone if this fails, he has been nothing but arrogant (I would love to play those aggies and shut them up). What do you think will become of this upcoming season?
Need to win at BYU (big road test) and get over the hump against KSU. Do that and I think big things could be in store. Texas should be favorite against OU. TCU game looms huge. Keep an eye on that one.
I heard that Speedy Noil is down to a&m and USC? Is this true? Where do you think he lands?
He'll end up at LSU most likely.
Hey Will,Our defense was horrific when it came to stopping the run last season, how do you think we do against the run this season? How good is Quandre Diggs? Lastly, Texas is going after a handful of committed prospects. Do you think Texas could steal one away? Thanks a lot Will!
It needs to be a whole lot better, and I think it has a chance of getting there. Malcom Brown will see the field a whole lot more than he did in 2012, which is huge for Texas. If Jeffcoat can stay healthy that's obviously huge too. LBs are extremely important to stopping the run as well. Need big years from Edmond, Santos, Hicks. ... Diggs is incredibly good. Don't listen to the undersized jabber anymore. He's shown that doesn't affect his game. ... Texas has a shot with Davion Hall.
The TEXAS Athletic Director developed the Longhorn Network and to many fans it is disastrous; the overall sports program has degenerated; Kansas State is our nemesis; the Athletic Director is from Kansas State; could there be a mole at the highest level?
It's good thinking but I'm going to have to say no. If there is, someone needs to call Nicolas Cage.
If Rick Barnes has another season like last season he will most likely be fired as the Texas basketball coach if he is fired who might be the next Texas basketball coach could Texas maybe get Tubby Smith who is a GREAT, GREAT coach from Texas Tech? Minnesota was stupid to fire him he took them to the tournament and seriously no offense to Golden Gopher fans but Minnesota is not really a national championship program the most they should exopect is maybe sweet 16 if they get lucky especially being in the big ten where their are quite a few quality basketball programs.
You can't go wrong with Tubby but I don't think they'd go that direction. Think they'd go younger. Remember, ties to Texas are important but not as much in basketball as football. They can look nationally.
Has Texas basketball got any good freshman coming in?
Here's a list of the Texas freshmen coming in: http://espn.go.com/colleges/texas/basketball/recruiting/commitments/_/order/false/texas-longhorns
Will Texas beat tcu next year?
Think it could be one of the biggest games of the year in college football. I'll hold my prediction for now. Could depend on who TCU has at QB.
Since the decommits, is the some positivenews on the recruiting trail?
Positive news is on the horizon... plenty of time left for Texas. No. 1 class in the country is a good start. Plenty of dominoes will fall depending on how it does in 2013.
When was the last time Texas was in such a state of flux, bordering on mediocrity, in the Big 3 sports (football, basketball, and baseball)?
Been a loooong tiiime.
How's the O-line look this offseason?
From what I hear it should be one of the strongest groups on the team. The depth there is starting to really come around. Remember, Desmond Harrison still hasn't participated with the team yet. That's a huge addition. He could start at LT. Jake Raulerson is doing really well. He's back up to 270. Darius James is going to be a load. Think this was the most positive spring for the oft badgered Espinosa too. Going to be a good group.
Save for a few recent examples where the ol' football coach retires and becomes the AD, that practice is a thing of the past. What's the likelihood Mack replaces Dodds a few years down the road in a throwback move?
It would seem to fit here about as well as anywhere in the country.
Who do you thin will be the next Texas Head football coach when Mack retires after winning back to back to back to back championships? haha kinda dreaming
If that were to happen I'd say someone on his staff would be in pretty good shape.
i seen Santos the other day at this workout place here in tyler he looks really lean he said he weighs 238 lbs do you think he will take more snaps on defense next year. ? and if so do you think he help the defense get better from last year?
Without question. He's lean but still mean. He'll factor into the rotation in some capacity, either as a starter or top backup.
Derrick Roberson has been quiet lately and im sure thats a good thing, but im just not sure he is solid with UT.. what do you think william? heard anything from him lately?
A lot of people are worried about Roberson in part to some tweets he's send out or something to that effect. I know he's really being recruited hard by plenty of teams but he's all Texas as far as we've been told. We'll look into more for you.
I believe it is Carter who has said several times that Buzz Williams of Marquette will be the next bball coach at Texas. Do you know what he is basing this statement on? I've seen him make this comment several times. He seems very confident of this prediction.
Not sure what Carter is basing that off of. But I do think he'd be a great fit here. His enthusiasm on the recruiting trail in Texas could be a dangerous (good) thing. Also, could you imagine the suits he'd wear in Austin. He'd prolly add a belt buckle for good measure.
Are you optimistic Mack Brown is going back to the offense that made him the coach he is today ?
Are Texas regents going to allow augie the same amount of time to turn around the baseball team as they have allowed Mack? He hasn't won a title since 2005
Will know more within the next few months, but I'd imagine Garrido has the pull to stay a bit longer. Can't keep having years like the last two though. Not at Texas.
Better future QB Tyrone Swoopes or Jalen Overstreet
Both? If I had to pick one I'm going with Swoopes. If things click with him in the pocket, watch out.
Do you anticipate a Lunt scenario soon in Austin with one of the QBs bowing out and transferring to another school? If so, who do you think will exit stage left, Brewer?
I'd have to say yes to both questions.
I believe that it is vital for Texas to build up some depth at the RB position in the class of '14. I think J. Gray will leave for the NFL after his Jr season based on his "RBs only have a limited number of carries/hits that the body can take" mindset. Wh will Texas end up with at the position in the class of '14? Is D'Onta Foreman now a serious candidate to get an offer (assuming that he is a package deal with his more highly reagrded brother)? How good is D'Onta?
Texas is going to take at least three RBs in 2014. Duke Catalon is a really good one. Texas really likes Joe Mixon (who doesn't?) and feel like they've got a great shot. UT is waiting to see Foreman in action before it makes a call there I believe. But, you are correct, Texas needs to add some much needed depth at RB in 2014. Kevin Shorter is a guy to keep an eye on as well.
So Texas was the latest to offer a scholarship to that 8th grader who LSU offered last year and Bama a few months ago, as well as other schools. Should we feel embarrassed or proud that we are in the mix for a child's signature?
It's weird to think but that's the way things are going in recruiting. Just another example of Mack showing he is adapting to the change around him. I think if Bama and LSU are doing it, and it could make a difference down the line, then do it. This is a very, very limited case though.
Who will be the next recruit to sign with Texas in football?
It'll be an offensive player, I believe.
with texas losing their commitment from daniel gresham, does this open the door for a potentially better recruit at running back? word on the street is that the district the all saints play in is on the weaker side of talent....
I don't want to knock Gresham because I'm not in the business of doing that and like him as a player/person. But I do think Texas feels a bit relieved that this is over. I think both sides do.
Is ther anyway you could send me some good Texas BBQ? Mom and Dad perfer me to suffer.. :/
Will Foreman and Cannon be the headliners at wide receiver for the Horns in the 2014 class? Who else is UT targeting seriously at the position?
I'm going to have to say "negative" to that one. Texas really, really liked D'haquille Williams, who just signed with LSU.
Can John Bonney play CB, or is he strictly a Safety?
He can come down to the box and play like Vaccaro. But he is more of a SS/S.
I honestly belive that the 2 hardest games on the schedule are BYU and Ole Miss, and if we can win those games than we can run the table. I know everyone will say Oklahoma is the most important but winning that game wont prove to me that "now we can win it all" BYU is better than Oklahoma and so is Ole miss and we pay them early, and if we can win those game it will show that we have it figured out the x's and o's and will run w/ that momentum of the early victories all the way to a BCS game. Those are my thoughts, what are yours?
We'll have more on this Thursday in our Question of the week. I think both of those games will be huge. There are several key ones here. How about KSU and finally trying to get over that hump? At TCU two weeks after OU? A lot of big ones but I think BYU and Ole Miss are dangerous.
Will Texas have the Defense to stop the run this year like maybe OU Freshman Powerhouse Keith Ford who can pound it up the middle and out run alot of people
Remains to be seen. Answered this earlier but M. Brown is going to have to be huge. Ced Reed/Reggie Wilson are going to have to be consistantly above average. LBs are going to need to stay healthy.
With the recent decommittments could this class only end up with last years number of 15-20 or could their be a step up and be 25-30.
Latter looks more likely.
How many Big XII championships = the prestige of 1 SEC Championship? I'm starting to feel like even if we win the Big XII, it's not worth much
Bob Stoops would disagree with you.
Who will step up opposite Jackson Jeffcoat and help provide UT with a consistent pass rush?
Ced Reed and Reggie Wilson are going to have first shot but Shiro Davis and Caleb Bluiett are going to have a chance.
This is more an idea for the heard but im on here anyways so here it is. Do you think there could be an article in the future (kinda like the one yall just posted about where UT stands w/ all the DB's) but with where Texas stands with OOS kids?
Will get that for you for sure.
Where do the Horns stand with CB Tony Brown? Been hearing rumors that he's learning toward LSU at this point. Is that the case right now?
Been the case all along but Texas is closing gap a little. Still a distant second IMO, maybe even third behind Bama.
Over/under 35% chance Texas snags a 5* in 2014? 10% they get two?
Over. Think they'll get one that isn't a five-star yet but could elevate to that level later. Under 10 percent.
Has Texas shown in any interest in TE Tyler Luatua out of California?
To my knowledge, no. But I will check in and have any updates on HN for you.
Never heard how did the visit for arrion springs go? Want this his 3rd visit to UT?
Positive. Will have more on that later this week. Hopefully something in Heard.
Do Watkins and Adams find themselves in the Texas seondary in 2014?
I'd say 50 percent % chance of that happening.
That's going to do it for this week's chat. Thanks again for everyone stopping by and sending in your questions. We really appreciate it.
