Matthew Berry
  (11:03 AM)

Hi gang! Thanks for stopping by. As always, all subjects answered. I was out of commision for part of this week, so no column this week, but we'll talk for two hours so hopefully that'll suffice till next week.A reminder: If you want a signed copy of my book and other free goodies, you can pre-order it now at - let's get it on!

Dom (Bay Area)

Suddenly my Kaepernick for a 12 vs Griffin for a 6 question from the last football pod isn't looking like such a slam dunk (Griffin's knee, Kaepernick's postseason). Have any updated thoughts?

Matthew Berry
  (11:04 AM)

I have Kaep ranked about RG3 right now - both studs - would rather CK at 12 than RG3 at 6 in a big way.

Ryan (MN)

TMR is back on the chat schedule! What to do with David Price, so frustrated, killed me last night by only pitching two innings and giving up 4 runs. I keep hearing be patient......thoughts? Thanks

Matthew Berry
  (11:06 AM)

Think you have to be patient - don't think he makes next start but injury doesn't appear to be serious. Price has gotten really unlucky with his strand rate and HR/FB... Personally, I'd ride it out rather than sell cheap

Chad (Atlanta)

Francisco Liriano looked pretty good against the Mets. How confident would you be starting him against the Brewers?

Matthew Berry
  (11:06 AM)

Not confident at all

Closers (Nowhere)

The credo is you can always find saves, but every league I play in has them wrapped up. Jansen of course gone, David Hernandez gone. Who are some sleepers do track, possibly add?

Matthew Berry
  (11:07 AM)

Madson just started rehab - he's first name that comes to mind.

Dennis Chandler (Denver)

In which rounds would you take the Denver WRs, Thomas, Decker and Welker?

Matthew Berry
  (11:08 AM)

Well, depends how many teams, how many WR you play, is it PPR or not, etc etc.... BUTI have Thomas as a top 10 WR, Welker as a top 15 WR and Decker as a top 30 WR if that helps.

DL Help! (Last Place!)

Which of these pitchers coming off of the DL would you rather pick up out of Colby Lewis, Brandon Beachy, Michael Pineda, or Matt Garza? Thanks for the advice!

Matthew Berry
  (11:09 AM)

Beachy. All have risk - he has most upside.

Marc (Morristown, NJ)

TMR, is Morrow going to come through for the rest of the year? Is Chris Carpenter and Kevin Gausman good pickups now for later in the year? thanks!

Matthew Berry
  (11:12 AM)

There's no way Toronto as a whole is as bad as they have been playing - I've always been a Morrow believer - control has been thie issue so far - last start was encouraging though he still walked too many. Yes on both guys as speculative adds - Some people think Gausman gets there ahead of Bundy.

Jim (Peoria, IL)

Could D-Bowe have a top 5 WR season with Andy Reid and their new "high-flying offense"?

Matthew Berry
  (11:14 AM)

Yes he could. He has the talent - he's been a top 5 WR before - they WILL throw. A lot. Andy Reid is always top ten in pass attempts in the league and who else you think they are gonna throw to there? I currently have him ranked at WR 18 and I may be too low on him. He's in my top 45 overall and will be on my "Love" list when that comes out. He's definitely underrated this year...

johnc (NYC)

Brady has exactly 401 completions the last 2 years. Even if he takes a step back to 350 this year, how do you see the pie being split? Who other than the TE's & Amendola be fantasy relevant?

Matthew Berry
  (11:16 AM)

Aaron Dobson is an interesting flyer. Rookie of course, but he's a deep threat that they need and the only one of the guys you mentioned that ISN'T a health concern

Mike G (Herndon, VA)

A Matthew Berry chat? WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!

Matthew Berry
  (11:16 AM)

Dan (San Jose)

Sorry I am late Matthew.

Matthew Berry
  (11:17 AM)

Where the hell have you been?

Andrew (VT)

Is it worth streaming Jose Fernandez today?

Matthew Berry
  (11:18 AM)

I would not

Ray (New york)

Im in a keeper league who should i keep Arian Foster or Dug Martin?

Matthew Berry
  (11:20 AM)

WOW. Insanely tough call. I have Foster higher for this year but Martin is the real deal, no doubt and Foster has shown signs of decline already. Obviously, I'd try hard to trade one of them if I could - even if you take less than market value - because someone has a worse keeper than either one of those guys. If you can only keep for one year, I keep Foster. If you can keep forever, I'd strongly consider Martin.

J. (Phoenix)

I'm on the fence to pre ordering your book, will it be better written than that horrible Croc movie? I kid, I kid, thanks for all the fantasy advice year round, can't wait to read it.

Matthew Berry
  (11:22 AM)

Thanks. It is, very simply, the best thing I've ever written. So if you hate my stuff, you'll tolerate it, if you like my stuff I think you'll love it. And Croc 3 does get discussed and insulted in it

Dave (NYC)

Who turns is around first BJ Upton or Ike Davis?

Matthew Berry
  (11:24 AM)

Ike Davis. I just have no cofidence in BJ at all. The fact that he already has 3 CS this year (he had 6 all last year)... think the speed numbers won't be there like they used to be at the end and when you're not even getting steals out of him...

Fernando (Spain)

What pitchers would you buy low on in a big way right now?

Matthew Berry
  (11:26 AM)

Price. Dickey. Strasburg. B McCarthy. Cain. Scherzer to an extent

Matthew Berry
  (11:26 AM)

(In other words, Max hasn't been awful but I think he'll be even better sooner than later)

Aaron (Savannah)

Michael Saunders. You buying?

Matthew Berry
  (11:28 AM)

We discussed on the pod today. Yes, I am in a big way. Increased his plate discipline in a nice way

Brandon (Cincinnati)

Jean Segura, top __ SS to start next season

Matthew Berry
  (11:29 AM)

Rob (Milwaukee)

I've been offered Allen Craig for Greg Holland - Why would I not accept this offer?

Matthew Berry
  (11:31 AM)

unless you were loaded at offense and super desperate for saves... you wouldn't. Take it and don't ask too many questions

Brad (Hillsdale, MI)

Any opinion on Archer or Odorizzi taking Price's spot?

Matthew Berry
  (11:31 AM)

Not unless one of them is sticking in the rotation long term.

Gerbil (Nawlins)

Why is anyone worried about football right now? It's May.

Matthew Berry
  (11:32 AM)

Because it's FOOTBALL.

Hulk Hogan (FL)

TMR Brother

Matthew Berry
  (11:32 AM)

Matt's Mom (TBA)

Matty speed up this chat please

Matthew Berry
  (11:33 AM)

Dude, I'm trying to flip through questions as fast as I can. Yell at the people who send the same bad question 50 times in a row.

Mike (DC)

Hey TMR, can't wait for your book...and Croc 3 is grossly underrated....(I can't say that with a straight face)..Do you see improvement from Gallardo going forward? Sell if I can?

Matthew Berry
  (11:34 AM)

That's because it isn't. It's just not a good movie. I don't on YoGa. The walks have always been an issue and now he's not striking anyone out. I'm selling if I can get someone who believes in a turnaround. He'll be better but not great

Josh (Chicago)

Wil Myers is stashed on my bench. Keep stashing? Why or why not?

Matthew Berry
  (11:35 AM)

At this point, might as well hang tough for a few more weeks. I'd be shocked if he's not up by June 1

Perry (Texas)

12 Team 2 QB League.I need to choose 2 keepers.CamLuckMegatron

Matthew Berry
  (11:37 AM)

Cam and Calvin and then I would make my 1st round pick be a QB. Worried Luck's #'s regress some thig year - less shoot outs, no Arians (INDY going with a bit more conservative offense)... I'd still have Luck below CJ in a 2 QB league rank

Doc Terminus (Passamaquoddy)

Do you get my name reference?

Matthew Berry
  (11:38 AM)

I don't.

Dave (Indy)

Ubaldo-- bonafide or bonifacio? If he is bonafide, and I also own Darvish, is Yu-baldo and acceptable team name?

Matthew Berry
  (11:40 AM)

Thnking he might be. He claims to have changed his mechanics some - I'd be lying if I said I've seen enough of his starts to verify but the important thing is that HE believes he has and that it's made a difference. The change has coincided with his recent solid run so... I'm kinda buying, especially in AL only.Very solid team name

Ray (New york)

With the decline if great rbs in fantasy would you start drafting WRs like White,Harvin,Fitz before rbs like S.Jackson, spiller,Richardson

Matthew Berry
  (11:41 AM)

My current top 200 ranks can be found here: have all 3 RB's you list as top 12 players overall.

cole (houston)

Are you hiring?

Matthew Berry
  (11:42 AM)

Depends what you do

Brian (Philly)

How much better is Fitz going to be this year? Worth keeping him for a 3rd over Cobb for a 12th? Can only keep two and Martin for a 6 is the other.

Matthew Berry
  (11:44 AM)

Fitz will be significantly improved with Arians and Palmer this year and I have him as a top 10 WR... BUT I would definitely keep Cobb in the 12th over him in the 3rd

John (KC)

Is Jean Segura for real? Not .350, but can he hit .300? I just traded for him.

Matthew Berry
  (11:45 AM)

Yes, he's for real. .290 is very reasonable. He's a career .303 hitter including all his minor #'s

Roy (The Ranch)

With your hundreds of followers, is there any such thing as "buy low," really?

Matthew Berry
  (11:48 AM)

Haha. Not all of the "hundreds" that play fantasy follow me. In fact, among people that play fantasy, more DOn'T follow me than do.

Evan (New York)

TMR- I'm a little surprised at all the experts rest of season rankings of Josh Hamilton. He's ranked 83 below the likes of David Ortiz, Mark Trumbo, Carl Crawford, etc, and the general sentiment outside of rankings seems to be very negative. Sure there are concerns but this is a career .300 hitter coming off a top 5 fantasy season. Do you really think he's fallen that far in Anaheim?

Matthew Berry
  (11:53 AM)

I do. I actually discussed him in a video that accompanies those ranks. I'm not convinced they ranked him low enough. His walk rate (just over 5%) is at a career low. His K rate is at a career high.Remember, he REALLY struggled (at least average wise) after June 1 last year. He's a career .260 hitter in Angels stadium. Small sample (only 160 AB or so) but still - Angels stadium is a poor place to hit compared to Arlington. He's swinging at every these days and this is a contutation of what he did 2nd half last year. He was on mine, Tristan's and many others "bust" list at start of year and this is among reasons why.And all of this is WHILE HEALTHY. You have to factor in his injury history and that he might miss time when thinkng about rest of yr ranks.

Matthew Berry
  (11:54 AM)

That career .260 in Angels stadium was prior to this year, FYI. (re: Hamilton)

Patrick (Florida)

Should I still be stashing Profar in an AL-only non-keeper league? Will he make any impact this season?

Matthew Berry
  (11:56 AM)

Yes I believe he will. But I never understood the hype he got for this year - when they signed the contract with Andrus that blocked the most obvious path. Now they gotta convince dKinsler to move over... Think we'll see Profar at some point and in an AL Only league I'm hanging on if I have him, but he should be dropped in 10/12/14 tm mix that are non keeper.

Daniel (NY)

Who is TZ in the rankings... Mike Trout 7?

Matthew Berry
  (11:57 AM)

Todd Zola

Matthew Berry
  (11:57 AM)

Todd's a really really smart fantasy analyst

Rob (Philly)

Besides Matt Harvey - any potential innings limits we should be prepping for?

Matthew Berry
  (11:57 AM)

Jose Fernandez isn't pitching more than 170 tops

Jeff (Nebraska)

Vernon wells nickname: The Lunchlady. First few school lunches are solid, pizza once a week and such. By the second semester it's mystery meat every other day. Last week of school and they finally bust out the pizza/decent food that they have been stockpiling seemingly all year. Redeeming themselves and raising hopes again.

Matthew Berry
  (12:00 PM)

Nice try but... no. Still looking

LOL (Seriously)

Todd Zola is really smart? He had Josh Hamilton at 220 and Andy Dirks at 118......REALLY?????

Matthew Berry
  (12:01 PM)

Yes, Todd Zola is really smart. Stand by that - think he's terrific. I don't want to speak for him but aAsk him on Twitter. @ToddZola. I'm sure he'll be happy to give you his thoughts on why.

Kevin (NJ)

What are your thoughts on Wil Venable?

Matthew Berry
  (12:03 PM)

I've seriously alwsys like Venable - every year he was a sleeper for me and every year... nothing. Now he finally starts putting it together the first year I'm off him. ARGHHHH.Anyways, power and speed are legit - always have been. Issue has been consistent playing time and the average. He'll never win you a batting title but think he can continue at a liveable .250 or so. And obviously, now he's getting PT...

Oscar Taveras (St. Louis)

Since we're talking about Profar, when am I due up or is there too much of a logjam?

Matthew Berry
  (12:05 PM)

Also discussed that on pod this morning. Yes, way too much of a logjam. He need an injury to break in this year in a major way.

jeff (Chicago)

theres less meat on this chat than Leanne Rimes ribcage. lets move it matty!

Matthew Berry
  (12:06 PM)

You want meat or you want fast? To give a thoughtful reply takes time, especially since I hunt and peck as a typist.

Matthew Berry
  (12:07 PM)

Plus trying to sort through all the questions takes time. I like the reference though. Not a LeAnne fan

Charles (NY)

Football!! Who are the mid round sleeper picks this year? Similar to Harvin/Morris/Martin from last year.

Matthew Berry
  (12:11 PM)

Well, Morris was undrafted by most or last round, Harvin was a top 10 WR for me last year and MArtin was a 5th round guy for me... BUT... some guys in the 5th - 8th rounds I like? I already mentioned Bowe. Antonio Brown, David Wilson, Chris Ivory, Lamar Miller, Cecil Shorts, Montee Ball... A little later I like Dennis Pitta to have a big year with Boldin gone (seems they competed for middle of the field last year)...I also think (despite listing Wilson above) that Andre Brown will be a good flex in the back when Brandon Jacobs was good mold...I'm back on Mark Ingram as well.

JR (Dallas)

People who don't have the patience for a slow, well-thought out chat of solid mediocre advise are the same ones who make knee-jerk trades!

Connor (Rancho Cucamongous)

Moustakas is a top __ 3rd basemen, ROS

Matthew Berry
  (12:12 PM)

Devon (Alberta)

Any special offers for preordering your book for us Canadian fans?

Matthew Berry
  (12:14 PM)

We can't because of legal issues. Ideally, you order from somewhere in America that will ship it to Canada. (Not Canadian Amazon, for example) Then, once you get the order confim #, goto and enter all the info. Then, where it says ZIP just put CANADA. We'll get it to you somehow.

Matthew Berry
  (12:14 PM)

Eric Hosmer (KC)

Am I James Loney? The pre-2013 one?

Matthew Berry
  (12:15 PM)

Man I hope not. But in a ten team mix, I'm not waiting to find out. Sick of waiting for him...

Chris (Boston)

Uh, Harvin wasn't a sleeper.

Matthew Berry
  (12:18 PM)

Depends on your definition. I did have him much higher than most - I remember finding the stat about his touches increasing when Ponder took over and how, from that point on he lead all NFL WR in total touches. To me, a sleeper is somoene who will outperform his draft cost, no matter what that is. And while healthy, Harvin certainly did that. I get your point (I didn't call him a sleeper, the questioner did) but I don't agree with narrow defintion of the word.

John (NY)

Karabell and Cockcroft are warming up to Dee Gordon? What's your take TMR? Is the walk rate legit, and what do you see his BA to be?

Matthew Berry
  (12:20 PM)

I agree with them. The old joke with him was always you can't steal 1st but something seems to have clicked this year. I think he finishes with a liveable .260 or so

Daniel (NY)

What are the Twitter handles for the other Rankers... BR, SC, DH and AVG (just kidding)?

Matthew Berry
  (12:22 PM)

To my knowledge, BR (ESPN Fantasy editor Brendan Roberts) and "Answer Guy" (and old TMR columnist) Shawn "C-Dub" Cwalinski don't have twitter. But "Answer Guy" and old TMRer Dave Hunter (DH) is at @TheRolyPolyBoy

Tim (Long Island)

Vernon Wells nickname: Fantasy Buck Rogers. Great player for a while but then played like he was frozen for 500 years only to return and be "out of this world."

Matthew Berry
  (12:24 PM)

Hmmm. Not bad. I DO have a fondness for Buck though and I hate Vernon, so wouldn't want to corrupt my memory of Buck, Twikki and Wilma Deering. Ah, Wilma Deering.

john goodman (my couch)

I take your advice and don't hustle. Also took your advice that 2b is weak and don't pay for saves, which i am getting crushed on now in saves cat. Should I still be patient on saves or try to move Kendrick or Altuve for a lower end closer?

Matthew Berry
  (12:29 PM)

Don't pay for saves applies to 10 team mix leagues. It also doesn't mean IGNORE saves. It just means draft them late, like guys like Jason Grilli. If you're getting crushed there, you're not paying attention. Heath Bell, Tazawa/Bailey, Gregg, Valverde, J Henderson, Mujica... none of them were closers at start of season. If you're gonna trade for a closer, make it a closer with good job security. I can't answer whether to trade those guys without knowing the rest of your team. In a vacuum, rather deal Kendrick than Altuve... pitching easier to find and his value at highest

Skip Baseless (CT)

Do you smoke pot Berry? Just wondering

Matthew Berry
  (12:31 PM)

I've acutally never smoked it in my life. Never smoked anything, period. Don't do drugs kids.

Jim (Peoria)

How bad is your golf game?

Matthew Berry
  (12:31 PM)

Pretty bad. I play inconsistently which doesn't help.

Jake (TN)

Is Bonifacio starting to coming alive?

Matthew Berry
  (12:33 PM)

Starting to look like, right? Long way to go but he's a much better player than he's shown so far, so he's an interesting guy to snag if you're in a 12 tm or deeper league

Greg (Myrtle Beach)

this is the slowest and most useles chatroom, my god take fantasy baseball

Matthew Berry
  (12:33 PM)

Another satifisfied customer!

Alissa (Madison)

TMR, please help a lady out. Prado a good buy low? Thinking of offering a closer for him. Points league.

Matthew Berry
  (12:35 PM)

Prado is a not a terrible buy low, but I'd offer less than a closer for him. I'm not a huge fan this year and would want to see him back healthy before I offered anything of real value

Kyle (NE)

What are your thoughts on the Green Bay backfield? Will either of the rookies be able to put up RB2 numbers consistently? Or will Lacy and Franklin split carries too evenly to put up good fantasy points?

Matthew Berry
  (12:39 PM)

Franklin is a really interesting talent but as long as Lacy is healthy, he's the guy I'd rather have because he'll be the goal line back. That said... GB is NOT a team that runs a lot (16th in rushing att last year), remember that Rodgers has something like 18 rushing TD's in his career - he vultures more than you think and Lacy has both injury concerns and Franklin to worry about - those off set any improvement in rushing att because now GB has better RB talent. To me, Lacy is a flex play, nothing more. Rather have Ball and, assuming he wins the PIT job, LaVeon Bell than Lacy among rookie RB

Ryan (Canada )

12 team ppr keeper have AP , Rodgers and Calvin Johnson. I can only keep 2 .. Please help me pick . Been keeping me up at night! Lol

Matthew Berry
  (12:41 PM)

Believe it or not, I'm throwing back Rodgers. Great as he is, QB is really deep this season. AP is the consensus #1 overall and CJ the #1 WR... in a PPR I keep him over Rodgers

Ryan (DC)

Thoughts on Lorenzo Cain? Stud when healthy right?

Matthew Berry
  (12:43 PM)

Like him a lot, yeah. Significantly improved contact rate this year, increased walk rate, speed legit - buying all of it

Mike (NYC)

I'm fast approaching my innings limit and need to start shopping one of my pitchers. Which one of these do you see as being the best "sell high" candidate: Sale, Iwakuma, Lynn or Burnett? Thanks!

Matthew Berry
  (12:45 PM)

I like all those guys rest of the year and feel they are all legit. I guess, if I had to pick one, I'd pick Lynn or Iwakuma, as I expect a little (not a lot, but a little) regression there. But honestly, I'd just see what the best offer I got for any of them and take that - let the marketplace tell you who to deal.

larry S (Chicago)

Any chance at all CJ Spiller finally takes the reigns from Fred Jackson? He'd be a top 5 RB if he was the guy right?

Matthew Berry
  (12:46 PM)

He's close to top 5 as is. He's definitely going to be "the guy" as it were and Marrone likes to run - he ran a ton at Syracuse - top 20 in FBS rushing attempts

TMR..what would you predict for my end totals: 1800 yds, 15 TDs, 60 receptions? in a PPR, i could end up as the #1 fantasy RB. In an andy reid offense, am i worth keeping for a 3rd rounder? thanks!!

Matthew Berry
  (12:47 PM)

less carries, more catches under Andy, but yeah... JC is absolutely wortha third rounder.

May (WA)

Is there a start cap in 10-team ESPN standard roto leagues?

Matthew Berry
  (12:48 PM)

yes. 200 starts

Chad (OKC)

How does the changes in Cleveland affect Trent Richardson's production next season?

Matthew Berry
  (12:49 PM)

Think it helps. I'm not a big fan of Norv as a head coahc but as an OC, he always gets great production out of his RB's. First rounder, easy

Adam (Indianapolis)

More fantasy points next year T.Y Hilton or Reggie Wayne?

Matthew Berry
  (12:50 PM)

Still Wayne. Like Hilton's talent a lot but think they go a bit more conservative this year and less deep throwing without Arians.

Elias (LA)

O/U 10 TD from Jimmy Graham this year?

Matthew Berry
  (12:51 PM)

Gimme the over. The #1 TE

Chris (Columbus)

Will Grandal be worth a add?

Matthew Berry
  (12:51 PM)

Elias (LA)

Cecil Shorts top 15 WR next year?

Matthew Berry
  (12:52 PM)

Has the talent to be but not the QB... still really like him

Randy (Chicago)

Nolan Arenado seems to have slowed down, you guys were hot to trot on him on the pod cast a few weeks back. Are you still high on him? is Moustakas higher? And is Lorenzo Cain better than both?

Matthew Berry
  (12:52 PM)

Cain over both, Mous coming on but rather have Nolan ROS

Chase (Bham)

When I pre-ordered the book, Amazon told me Dan Brown's Inferno was frequently bundled with your book. Must be nice to know your thought of as highly as Dan Brown?

Matthew Berry
  (12:54 PM)

Yeah, I saw that too. Think it's much more likely that EVERYONE'S book is often bundled with Dan Brown's.

Lucas (San Francisco, CA)

You liking Martellus Bennett this year?

Matthew Berry
  (12:57 PM)

Eh. Until we truly see what Trestman's offense will look like it's hard to say. Think he'll be fine. Good some weeks, invisible on others. If I don't get one of the top 5 TE's, I want to be the last guy in my league to draft one. They are all sort of the same to me after the top guys (although I do like Dennis Pitta among that group)

Brick (South GA)

Would you try to deal Youkilis or A. Ramirez? Only have room for one.

Matthew Berry
  (12:57 PM)

Youk. He just won't stay healthy...

Lucas (San Francisco, CA)

EJ Manuel top 15 fantasy QB this year. Mark it down.

Matthew Berry
  (12:57 PM)

Officially marked. Strongly disagree, but marked

Pete (New York)

Hey Berry, do us all a favor and write more fantasy Baseball articles. I look forward to your opinions more than anyone's. Keep up the great work.

Matthew Berry
  (12:59 PM)

Thanks Pete. I do what they tell me to do... you'll see a mixture of baseball and football this summer. But I do a baseball podcast every single day...

Alex (Mass)

rickie weeks droppable? i got kendrick and walker and i see L cain, prado, arenado on the WW

Matthew Berry
  (12:59 PM)

In a league that size, where those guys are avail, yes, feel free

Paul (Denver)

Dropped Saunders for Melky for my UTL spot. Do you think this was a good move and does Cabrera's power come around?

Matthew Berry
  (1:00 PM)

Think it's close. I'm a Saunders believer. We discussed on pod this morning. I said I'd rather have Saunders, Nate sauid Melky for rest of year. To me, just depends what you need

Missy (Chicago)

Vernon Wells: fantasy alimony. It's great as newlyweds, so bad at the end you get divorced. While you're stuck paying alimony to get rid of them, they fix their issues but someone else gets to enjoy the benefits.

Matthew Berry
  (1:01 PM)

Not bad...

Matthew Berry
  (1:02 PM)

ok gang, I gotta run. Thanks again for stopping by. I'll try to answer more questions on Twitter (@MatthewBerryTMR) and on Facebook. ( a great weekend!
