Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Blake (AZ)

Hey! Let's get this party started! :)

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

We have officially started. Fire away!

Scott (CHS)

Hey, Pat. When will the contract details for all of the rookie contracts get posted? Also, why do you think Sedrick Ellis is out of a job? From what I remember, he was solid for the Saints.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

I've been posting the numbers for the guys that sign as soon as they come in. Expecting some more signings later today.

Rick (Charlotte,NC)

Is it time to start giving David Gettleman a little credit for what he has managed to do with the Panthers given the situation he had going in?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

Yes, he's making the most out of it. And I think the DeAngelo restructure was bigger than people realize. They freed up cap room in 2014 and '15, which is hugely important because they already were way over where the '14 cap is going to be.

Nicolas (Parkland, FL)

Is there a good chance that Mike Glennon starts at QB over Freeman in the first regular season game?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Let's not get carried away. Freeman's going to camp as the starter and I expect him to open the season in that role. If he starts off poorly ...well, then things could change.

Geraden (Orem, UT)

Pat! Big fan! I hear there's a lot of talk of switching Malcolm Jenkins back to corner for Vacarro? Why wouldn't Rob Ryan move Harper to OLB or something similar? He was terrible in coverage and Jenkins has WAY more upside.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

I'm still not sure how all that's going to sort out. But I agree with you that Jenkins has more upside than Harper.

Falcoholic (ATL)

Pat, how likely is it that the Falcons will run 2 TE sets with Gonzo & Loilolo? Both are Red Zone threats.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Pretty likely. Put two power forwards out there and throw lots of alley-oops.

Ed (Queens Village)

What is your take on Steve Smith comments about Mark Sanchez?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

I honestly didn't understand what he was saying.

Brad (NC) [via mobile]

The Panthers signed Florence to mentor the young DBs for the Panthers. Why don't the Panthers apply this same logic to Woodson - who is a better career CB than Florence anyway.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Woodson would cost more.

eric (arcata, ca) [via mobile]

the last time the falcons dropped 100 mill on a qb it didnt turn out as well. do you think this time is different with matty ice and do you think he deserves it? thanks pat and happy friday

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Yes, I think he deserves it. He's produced five straight winning seasons and I don't think there are any off-field concerns with Ryan.

Scott (CJS)

Why do you think Sedrick Ellis is out of a job? From what I remember, he was solid for the Saints.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Wouldn't say he was solid. I'd say he was an underachieving former first-round pick.

BUC since '95. Rock Hill,Sc [via mobile]

To complete the defense don't we need a stud at Sam LB? Any names?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Not sure they're going to do anything dramatic there. Think they're hoping Casillas can step into that role.

John Ryan (Charlotte NC)

Pat I know it way early but if they want to will the Panthers have enough room in 2014 to become a player in free agency ?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

As of now, no, because they have about $125 committed to cap. But Gettleman already is working on dropping that number and I'm sure he'll do a lot more after the season.

Sean (Vegas)

Which NFCS team has the best set of TE's? Has to be the Saints with Graham/Watson.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Yep, I'd agree with you there.

Mike (Albany,La)

Now with rob Ryan in New Orleans do you think he will have the saints blitzing like in 2009?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Think they'll definitely be more aggressive than last year.

Kasy (Hattiesburg)

Any idea if Revis is going to attend OTA's next week?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Think he's attending, but won't take part in on-field drills.

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

Hey Pat with a healthy Bowers and Clayborn, and the addition of Gholston and Spence... How u think the pass rush will compare to that of last year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Remains to be seen. But I think it's pretty clear the Bucs have very big expectations for Bowers. We'll see if he can deliver. The potential is there.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

John, call the man by his correct name and I'll answer your question.

Brian( Kenner LA ) [via mobile]

Hey Pat. Just a quick statement. I don't think the Saints D is as bad as the stats say. Everyone, even you, thought it was a middle of the pack D last year and with the additions of Bunkley and Lofton they were better. So when you throw in a new coach and all the bounty stuff. I feel like they were set up for failure. With the additions this year and some normalcy, I see a bounce back. At least to the middle of the pack. Which is all they need. Thoughts??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

If they can get to anywhere near the middle of the pack on defense, Saints will be in great shape.

B Mand (Sarasota, FL)

When is Revis expected to be able to fully participate in practice?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

Dominik has said he's confident Revis will be ready for start of training camp.

Eric (San Diego)

Why so much hating on Freeman? He finally has the same OC for a second year in a row, and the terrible pass D last season put him in the situation of having to air out the ball 50+ times a game

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Because he's a QB and the first guy that gets blamed (fair or not) when a team doesn't win is the QB.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

John, again, spell the man's last name properly. I can't post the question the way you have it.

Eric (San Diego)

Hey Pat, Do you think the bucs could / should bring back Barber in some sort of teaching / mentorship role for the younger guys on D?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

As a coach? I don't think he wants to do that. The hours are brutal and the pay isn't anywhere near what he's used to.

eric (arcata, ca) [via mobile]

so i read your weakest links for the falcons and i agree bout the d tackles but what about the oline? we lost two starters any input on the o-lin?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

I'll have a post on that a little later this afternoon. Bottom line is they've invested some draft picks in O-line in recent years and it's time for those guys to start playing and producing.

Paul (Knoxville)

Any chance the Saints are setting up to release Harper, sign a veteran S (Woodson?) to replace Harper, and start Vaccaro..then upgrade the pass rush?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Half of Harper's base salary is guaranteed. They'd take a cap hit if they cut him.

B Mand (Sarasota, FL)

Say Freeman has a good season and the Bucs extend him. What kind of contract will he command?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Depends on how good of a season. But, unless he leads them to the Super Bowl, I don't see him getting the $20 mil a year the elite guys are getting. Maybe somewhere around $15 or $16 mil?

Breon (Colorado Springs)

Pat, Do you believe Josh Freeman is receiving undue backlash that is warranted by bad defenses as well as an injury plagued team? If So why is Greg Schiano so ready to dismiss him after the season if he doesn't have a pro bowl year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Because Schiano needs to win, just like every coach in the league. Yes, can't put all the blame for last year on Freeman. But there certainly were some moments he could have handled better and he needs to improve on those this year.

Matt Riddle (Atlanta, GA)

Man, Really great to be able to see Smitty more animated and passionate! We all know he has it but so rarely get to see it...thanks for the share PY

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Yes and I wish every team would do a State of the Franchise event like the Falcons did. Lots of interesting stuff came out of that. I'll have a couple more Falcons posts off that this afternoon.

Hank (Charlotte, NC)

What do you see Gettleman doing with the money D-Will's restructure freed up?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. Might make a mid-level move or two. But I think he's just setting up as much carry-over money as possible for next year's cap.

Sean (Vegas)

Which rookie in the NFCS is going to have the biggest impact?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

I'll say Desmond Trufant. Think he starts right away and opposing offenses will challenge him right away.

Nathan (Orange County)

What's the hold up in extending Mike Williams? I thought this was going to get done on Monday.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

They reportedly had a meeting Monday, but just a meeting. Negotiations take time. But I think it will get done. Both sides want it to happen.

Breon (Colorado Springs)

Pat, also with a shaky pass rush how well can the buccaneers secondary really be one compliments the other, and with injury concerns throughout the D-line I cant see them being as dominant as they can be unless they acquire a Simeon Rice type of player.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Not saying this is necessarily how I feel, but I think the Bucs believe Bowers can be a Simeon Rice type of player.

Ryan (Charlotte NC)

Pat I think it safe to say that the Panthers are glad that Mike Goodson is not on the roster anymore.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Probably true!

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

Hey when Doug Martin was first drafted there were comparisons of him to Ray Rice.. Do u feel that is accurate at this point?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Think he certainly is the "all-purpose back" they talked so much about on the night they drafted him.

Nathan (Orange County)

I agree with Breon. It's hard to generate a pass rush when the opponents receivers are always open. Tampa should see a nice surge in sacks and pressures.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Very true.

Ron (High Point, NC)

re: the Panthers cap situation in 2014 and beyond.... Gettleman is not going to spend the "room" he's creating this year. He's saving up for Cam's new contract. And along the same lines...does DeAngelo's new contract make him more subject to being released?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Exactly. On DeAngelo, doesn't make him more subject to release this year, but could help in the future.

Kyle (Charlotte, NC)

Can you see the Saints back in the playoffs this year? They were 7-9 with the absolute worse defense and two faux head coaches. Even if the defense is ranked 20th-24th in the league I think it's safe to assume the Saints win at least 10.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

I think the return of Payton will help tremendously. We all know how could the offense is. If they can just play a little defense, they should be a playoff team.

Nathan (Mayer)

Pat, if Matt Ryan doesn't have an extension does he hold out?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

I seriously think something will get done before camp.

Luke (Northdale)

I have a hard time believing Dominik when he says Glennon will get "most" of the snaps in pre-season. Are they really considering letting him start right out of the gate?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

As I said before, I'm pretty sure Freeman will be the opening-day starter. If he gets off to a rough start, then we could see Glennon as the season goes on.

David (Raleigh)

In my opinion a good pass rush is what makes a secondary good. While the Falcons, Saints, and Bucs primarily addressed the secondary this offseason the Panthers did more for the pass rush by acquiring Star and Short. Do the Panthers have the best defense in the NFC South this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

I think they have the best front seven -- at least on paper. The big question is the secondary. Like you said, a good pass rush helps a secondary. But I'm still not sure they have enough talent in the secondary.

Nathan (Orange County)

@Luke: Preseason is generally reserved for helping players acclimate to new systems/players. Josh doesn't have that problem right now so it's best to see what you got out of Glennon. Freeman is the starter unless his arms fall off.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Thank you, Nathan. Well said.

Mack (Sebastian, FL)

Hey Pat, do you think any of the bucs rookie d-lineman will have any impact this season or are they just going to be strictly rotational guys?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Sounds like they have high hopes for Spence. They think he has a chance to start.

Geoff (brooklyn, new york)

Does Corey Peters have a better year this year than last?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

He should since he's starting off healthy.

Kyle (Concord, NC)

It's my belief that the Saints' cap problems are directly related to their inability to develop and retain draft picks. Instead they have opted to build through free agency to some degree. Am I incorrect in my thinking?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

There's some of that involved. But the biggest factor is their QB takes up so much of the cap. But that's the price you have to pay when you have a QB like Brees.

Ken (Pineville)

With the arrival of Hixson to push the others do you see any of the other panther wr's steppin' up their game???

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Joe Adams is the guy I want to see. Think he could be much improved with a year under his belt.

Luke (Northdale)

@Nathan, if you read the CBSsports.com story, it makes it sound like they want to see what they've got so they can play him immediately. Right or wrong, I think Freeman's days in Tampa are all but over.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

If that really were the case, wouldn't Freeman already be gone. Besides, other than Russell Wilson, how often does a third-round pick step right in and start at QB?

CC (Atlanta)

Gotta love Saints fans. Rob Ryan took a much more talented Dallas D last year and got shredded. Yet somehow he'll help the Saints. If he blitzes alot does he really think Greer and Robinson can cover? Oh my, can't wait for this!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

CC stirring up the division's best rivalry in May!!!

David (Raleigh)

Speaking of the Panthers WR Corp. with the additions of Hixon and Ginn to the roster does Armanti Edwards finally get cut from the team?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

I would think so.

Nicholas Medica (Totowa, NJ) [via mobile]

Do you see the young core of Martez Wilson, Junior Gallette and Victor Butler a good starting point for establishing the rush in the new 3-4 defense?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

That's an unknown at this point. But Saints must feel like those three can rush the passer or else they would have made more moves for pass rushers.

Nicholas Medica (Totowa, NJ) [via mobile]

Give me a stat prediction for Graham now that he has Payton back and his wrist is finally healed. 100 catches, 1200 yards and 10 TDs?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

I don't think that's unrealistic. Also should help that his wrist is healed, so the drops shouldn't be an issue.

Sean (Vegas)

Maybe CC doesn't know Greer is a good CB who was hurt last year and Lewis was signed. So Robinson may play in the dime package at the most.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

And some answers to CC from Saints' fans.

Bryan (Lake Charles)

@CC It's not just Ryan but a scheme utilizing the available talent in a way that allows the players to succeed. The Saints didn't fit the Scheme last year and the coordinator didn't adjust fast enoguh to that. They may not fit this scheme, but I would hope Ryan, like Williams, can adapt and find ways to make the scheme fit the players and not the other way around. Nolan has done a good job of that in the ATL with a lot less talent than he has had during his time with BAL/SF/DEN.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

And another.

Ken (Pineville)

So is it playoff or bust for Rivera this year???

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Think that's pretty safe to say.

Prashanth (San Jose)

Pat, I liked your piece on the Panthers OC Shula where you mentioned that he should be better at this role than he has been in the past, due to better talent he has at his disposal. But I am still concerned that conservatism is a deep instinctual behavior and this may well affect the Panthers offensive production this year. What do you think?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

Give Shula a chance. Think you might be pleasantly surprised. He had nothing to work with in his Tampa days. Plus, some of the conservative nature (maybe most of it) was due to Dungy. Shula and Rivera are coaching for their jobs. I think they'll play to their strengths.

Lee C (clearwater, fl)

Is Tampa really going into season with Luke Stocker as starting TE? Or will they bring in a veteran free agent before camp?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

I keep looking, but not seeing anyone great available. Maybe somebody will get released somewhere else in camp and Bucs will bring him in. But, for now, it looks like Stocker.

Austin (Chapel Hill)

Have enough parts been improved for Panthers to make the playoffs? Or is Rivera going to be fired and they see another rebuilding process?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

I think Panthers have enough talent to contend for a playoff spot -- if things break right and Rivera and his staff coach well.

Will (Big Easy)

Do you think the Saints have a finite window to make a Super Bowl run? Outside of Graham, Keenan Lewis, Curtis Lofton maybe Vaccaro and I guess Mark Ingram they are really devoid of young talent.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Think their window is all tied to Brees.

Ken (NY)

What is the biggest strength for the panthers?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Their QB, if they use him properly.

Lee C (clearwater, fl)

Drew Brees is 34 years old. How many years does he have left in him? How bad off will the Saints be without him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Think Brees can go 3-5 more years. Saints would be in trouble without him, just like any team would be in trouble without franchise QB.

Bryan (Lake Charles)

I liked your piece on Cam but I have to disagree with you on one point. Cam Newton is not a better pocket passer than Andrew Luck. I do think he has a chance to be a very good QB, but can he get out of his on way mentally to do that? He has shown some imaturity in his bried career that is hurting him. Can he get past that and past his ego to take that next step?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

I think Cam has the arm to be as good as Luck. As for the maturity, we'll see. But I think Panthers have been doing things behind the scenes to try to help that process.

Dan R (should be in chapel, lol) (CoL, SC)

Who's more likely to end up being our Victor Cruz, David Gettis or Joe Adams?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

Adams. I think the Gettis ship has already sailed.

JL (LA)

U know Pat its really not a rivalry When NO has won 10/13 games from Atl since 06, so oh my CC

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

You sure you're not really Curtis Lofton???

Lee C (clearwater, fl)

Is Atlanta's secondary as bad as it looks on paper?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

They have two Pro Bowl safeties. Asante Samuel's not washed up. The two rookies could be good and Robert McClain is not a bad guy to have for depth.

CC (Atlanta)

I know you won't really answer this but what are the odds Cam tries to figure a way out of Charlotte? I've heard he's not totally sold on the org. It's happened before.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

CC, I honestly don't have an answer for you. You might have heard more about Cam's thinking than I have.

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

Hey Pat the Bucs play the Jets the first game of the season... Do u think the nfl did that on purpose?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

I think the NFL took a bit of a leap. They knew the Revis trade talks were going on and took a shot that the deal would go through.

Mark (NC)

Why hasn't anything been done with Clauson? Is he really that bad?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

He's not going to beat out Cam and he doesn't have any trade value.

Dan R (should be in chapel, lol) (CoL, SC)

Do you feel like a lot of the Cam chatter doesn't take into account the second half of last season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Yes, I thought he was solid the second half of last season, once they figured out what the heck they were trying to do on offense.

Breon (Colorado Springs)

Whats the chances of the bucs having four defensive players in the HOF from the buccaneers Super Bowl run? What are your thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

Two definitely. Three maybe, but not four. I could see either Barber or Lynch getting in in a year when the competition isn't real strong.

JL (LA)

Thanks for having us, have good wkend!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

Thanks to all of you. Have a great weekend. No chat next week. We'll pick it up the following week.
