Chat with Jake Trotter

Jake Trotter
  (4:01 PM)

We'll get started in a sec here.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

How are you making out after the tornadoes? Hope everything is going as well as possible for the OKC community? Best wishes and prayers to the families, who lost valuables and a loved one.

Jake Trotter
  (4:03 PM)

Thanks, Tony. One yesterday missed me by just a couple of miles. Another bad one on the ground right now. Hope everyone stays safe.

soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, unfortunately the sky really was falling in Oklahoma yesterday, prayers to everyone out there and be safe tonight too!

Jake Trotter
  (4:03 PM)

Plus 1.

Jake Trotter
  (4:04 PM)

Guys, my power is flickering right now. I will continue to do the chat, but if I somehow drop off the grid and lose Internet, you'll know why... sirens are going off!

Rob (Dallas )

When does the '13 class of arrive on campus. Is there danger of any players not making it to Norman?

Jake Trotter
  (4:05 PM)

DT Kerrick Huggins is the one to be worried about

Peter (Elko, NV)

Any suspension or penalty for Thompson coming? How will this affect the #2 battle.

Jake Trotter
  (4:07 PM)

Stoops' track record suggests Thompson could serve a one-game suspension (which will probably mean nothing considering Bell likely will start the opener). It could have a small effect, but I don't think it's going to be a huge deal in the long run -- provided that this is a one-time misstep.

William (Dallas)

Jake, hope you and your family are safe bro. Why is Mike Gundy acting like such a punk and placing so much limits to where Lunt can go. It wasn't that long ago that he was considering a job at Tennessee just because their AD scheduled tough games like Mississippi State in a neutral site.

Jake Trotter
  (4:07 PM)

One more example of the hypocrisy in college football. Coaches can do what they want. Players, not so much.

Henry (Fort Worth)

Who will be OU's starting LT, Tyrus Thompson or Daryl Williams? How much playing time do you envision for Josiah St. John? Any chance he becomes a starter sometime during the season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:09 PM)

Right now, they have Thompson on the left, and Williams on the right. St. John has a very good chance to fill the role that Thompson held last year as the third man in the rotation.

Tony A. (Miami Beach)

Hey Jake, Hope you and your fam are OK after those crazy storms. My freshman year was 98-99 (Moore F-5), so I know how scary that stuff is.Do you think Bob has been a bit too vocal about stuff this offseason (players getting paid and Bottom half of SEC)? I don't think he's totally off base with his comments, but nationally I think it hasn't put Bob or my Sooners in the most positive light. I kind of want the Sooners to fly under the radar and find a way to shock everyone thinking that they'll lose the league to UT or OSU.What are your thoughts?

Jake Trotter
  (4:11 PM)

I remember the Moore tornadoes well. Drove through Moore the day after, and it was a war zone. Flood lights everywhere... Bob's comments are similar to the Gundy-Lunt thing, in that, whether right or wrong, it's a PR battle doomed to fail... I'm picking OSU to win the league right now, based on schedule. Pokes get TCU/OU in Stillwater.

LASooner28 (Manhattan Beach, CA)

Hey Jake...what's your take on restricting "student-athlete" options if they decide to transfer schools??

Jake Trotter
  (4:12 PM)

I think it's ridiculous. I get restricting transfers within conferences. But if we're going to restrict players from going to certain schools, shouldn't we restrict coaches, too?

Jake Trotter
  (4:13 PM)

Guys, this tornado in Moore... this is not looking good.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Hi Jake. What's your take on Malcom Kelly's comments, especially regarding the offense? Kind of hard to argure. Although, Jermaine Greshams don't come along every year.

Jake Trotter
  (4:14 PM)

I always thought Malcolm got a bad rap. He was a great player for OU. I felt like OU kinda hung him out to try in that West Virginia game by not explaining why he wasn't able to play. Made it seem like he was sitting to protect his draft stock, when it was just the opposite.

William (Dallas)

In your opinion, who is the better option at WR Lacolton Bester or Jaz?

Jake Trotter
  (4:16 PM)

Bester is the safer pick. Jaz, however, has more upside.

Peter (Elko, NV)

Has OU considered scheduling any west coast games? Seems like they got a little pipeline in San Diego and Fresno. Saw them at UCLA years back. Would love to see them out here again!!!

Jake Trotter
  (4:17 PM)

They've done it before. Played Washington, Oregon, and as you mentioned, UCLA. Haven't heard of anything, and OU is pretty booked up in the non-conf with ND, Tenn, Ohio State, LSU, Nebraska all coming up.

Clint (Texas)

I feel bad for Wes Lunt, I can understand not wanting him to transfer to the big 12 and beat osu three times or non conference opponent, but not seeing PAC 12 or SEC?

Jake Trotter
  (4:17 PM)

Agreed. Pretty ridiculous.

soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake maybe you better head for cover this blog isnt worth getting hurt over be safe man

Jake Trotter
  (4:18 PM)

Don't worry, the tornado still a ways away from me. I used live on 19th in Moore, though, and that's exactly where that tornado appears to be. Lot of people live there. Hopefully they're all bunkered down.

Chris (Wylie)

Jake, thoughts and prayers to you and everyone else in the Sooner state. Stay safe.

Jeff (Dallas)

I'm streaming a tornado. Apparently big and in Moore. Be safe Jake.

Jake Trotter
  (4:19 PM)

Gary England's crew suggesting it might be an F5, which would be awful.

kendall (texas)

any news on where former DT damon williams williams will end up and why was he released from his scholarship

Jake Trotter
  (4:19 PM)

No news. He wasn't going to play at OU. Talent just not there.

miasooner (grand junction,co)

even if your name is Lombardi you can't win without players. what has happened to Oklahoma's recruiting? it seems they get skilled players but can't recruit the bread and butter players on the ol and dl.

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

Exhibit A why Stoops' three coaching changes in Feb were his 3 line coaches.

Shane (Chelsea)

You know that Roy Finch guy? Haha! Anyways, in all seriousness, if you were making the call, would you start Finch over Williams? Knowing that Williams is the better overall back, just having the threat of Finch in the game would be stressful on any defene in my opinion.

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

I wouldn't start Finch, but I would play him a heck of a lot more than 3 snaps per game.

soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, when do most players report for summer drills?

Jake Trotter
  (4:21 PM)

The freshmen report June 8-9-10, somewhere in there.

James (OKC)

Jake, what's going on? Weren't the new coaches suppose to not suck at recruiting? The CB from Mississippi and the OC from Ohio aren't ranked by Scouts, Rivals, 24/7 or your very own ESPN. It's only mid May and already OU is forced to go to their 5th or 6th options. Even if these dudes develop into good players, one things is pretty clear: OU is failing to get commitments from the players they want most.

Jake Trotter
  (4:21 PM)

Lot of good players that OU really wants still on the board. Wouldn't hit the panic button just yet.

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

Sorry, had to answer a few texts telling everyone I'm ok....

Henry (Fort Worth)

Is there any updates to the injuries of Nile, Shead and Irwin? I understand that Shead and Irwin were suppose to have procedures after the Spring.

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

Irwin had a procedure to his hand before the spring, but went through spring drills. Shead said back surgery is not on the table, and that he felt better after getting a couple months off in the winter. Nila is fine, and should be able to go through summmer workouts.

Kris (Des Moines)

Really?? Bester or Reynolds?? Lets see, If you want a tour of the sideline pick Bester. If you want to see TD's go with the guy that has scored a few..

Jake Trotter
  (4:24 PM)

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. But they like the way Bester blocks, and OU plans to run the ball more, so...

Seth (Irving )

Do you sense there is any frustration on the part of Bob Stoops over Kish's recruiting/coaching? I'm not trying to take shot at the guy but he was a LB coach that HC were fighting to get to their programs.

Jake Trotter
  (4:25 PM)

There might be some, but I have no sense of it. At least not yet. Amazing a program with maybe the strongest LB tradition in CFB is struggling so much to recruit LBs.

randy (wilson,wyoming)

would you consider JH or JN on the hot seat if they don't make a game plan to win the big games this year

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

No

Tony A. (Miami Beach)

I flew back home to Miami a few days after that, and driving to OKC through moore was scary. Hadn't seen a scene like that since hurricane andrew when I was a kid in Miami. Same spots in moore got trampled in like '03 too.

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

They are starting to show aftermath shots on the news. This is Moore '99 all over again.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Will Bedenbaugh be able to build on the momentum of the Dalton commitment and land Barrett and/or Smith? Will the next Sooner pleadge be an ESPN 150 player?

Jake Trotter
  (4:27 PM)

Like OU's chances with Barrett. This has the chance to be a very solid OL class.

Shane (Chelsea)

Jake, if the SEC was to come knocking at OU's door, should they answer it? Is this inevitably the only way in the near future for them to compete w them w recruiting? They always say keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Jake Trotter
  (4:29 PM)

They also say that recovering alcoholics should steer clear of bars. OU has had trouble with recruiting violations in the past. Joining the SEC would invite trouble.

Benjamin (Washington, DC)

Few people remember but in 98 late April early May we also had a string of terrible storms. Went straight through OKC and tore up neigborhoods. But yes driving down May Ave. in 99 I remember seeing a neighborhood split in half. Hope everyone is safe and sound.

Kris (Des Moines)

It makes sense though. I don't know many LB's that want to chase around slot guys all day... They want to play downhill and thump..Which means hello SEC..

David (Plano )

Is Lindley a DE and Rashod Favors a DT? In my opinion, they seem very small to play DE and DT. What kind of impact can they have if they remain there rather than return to LB?

Jake Trotter
  (4:31 PM)

They're undersized, but they have a better chance to help where they are rather than where they were.

Ross (Keller, Texas)

Jake it seems that whenever a Big 12 team faces a SEC defense the SEC defense ends up shutting down the spread offenses. I know that for the most part the SEC has better athletes on defense than the Big 12 defenses. OU has undersized defensive ends and linebackers would it not make sense to recruit bigger players like OU used to have like the SEC has now since it seems what they do works. We know what OU is doing with their defense is not even close to working.

Jake Trotter
  (4:32 PM)

I think OU has gone too far trying to adjust to the offenses of the Big 12 instead of forcing those offenses to adjust to the OU style of defense, if that makes sense.

William (Dallas)

What are coaches saying about Tylor McNamera as a blocker. Has he improved enough to keep him out there the entire game?

Jake Trotter
  (4:33 PM)

Jury still out. Sam Grant is the best TE blocker.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

I totally agree with your response to Ross's question. I can't see Saban bending to the Big 12 offenses. Maybe some adjustments, but an SEC defense can work.

Kris (Des Moines)

Makes perfect sense Jake. OU stopped dictating and starting reacting on D. I thought Mike was going to change that... Crossing my fingers...

Benjamin (Washington, DC)

Lose power?

Jake Trotter
  (4:36 PM)

Not yet. Local TV reporting the tornado has struck an elementary school in Moore, and that kids may be trapped...

Jake Trotter
  (4:37 PM)

Guys, in light of what's happening in the OKC metro, going to take a couple more questions, then cut the chat a few minutes short.

David (Plano )

Is there really a difference in the OL Bedenbough is recruiting as opposed to James Patton? It seems that both like really quick athletic guys rather than big, strong, tough dudes.

Jake Trotter
  (4:37 PM)

I haven't seen much of a difference yet.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Appreicate your trooper attitude about the chat, but stay safe.

randy (wilson,wyoming)

do think the play calling will be better this year, and will we see more t-end sets. Hope so.............

Jake Trotter
  (4:38 PM)

No way we could see any less, right?

Rod (Tulsa )

You should just shut it down until next week,. There are more important things than a chat

Jake Trotter
  (4:39 PM)

Agreed, Rod. Guys, thanks for all the questions. Everyone in Oklahoma, be safe. These storms are far from being done.
