Fantasy Sports with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning gang. We've got an hour ahead of us to do some fantasy chattage, so get your questions ready. Second cup of coffee in hand, so let's get started. Who is leading off today?

Scott (Zona)

Everyone is saying to sell high on Corbin. What about in a dynasty league? Is he on his way to becoming one of the best pitchers in the league or is this just a hot run right now?

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Corbin's value right now is very tied to wins. I've got him ranked #12 SP right now in terms of value-to-date and along with Lester and Masterson, it's the most "mirage-y" of the pitchers at the top. Not saying he's a total fraud by any means, but if someone is willing to give you tons of value for him, you make the deal in any format.

Doc Terminus (Passamaquoddy)

Josh Rutledge sent down? Dude was on pace for 15/15!

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Pace is a funny thing... take his pace over the last two weeks and there's no wonder he was sent down, especially with DJ LeMatheiu hitting .400. He'll be back sooner rather than later- better for him to get everyday at-bats in Triple-A than watch from the bench and lose confidence by the day.

TalkBalks (NY)

I desperately want to start Samuel Deduno (hero of the WBC) on Friday. Should I dump him and roll with John Danks instead?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

As I mention in Daily Notes, Deduno was called up specifically for this matchup with Detroit, but while I'm not totally sold on him it's one game. You feel it, go ahead and start him. Not going anywhere near Danks though, because velocity still not back yet and K/BB in rehab was not all that impressive.

Adam (La )

Does Gausman have a legitimate shot to stay in the O's rotation? If so what do his final numbers look like?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Let's see him pitch shall we? I think the fastball is very legit and certainly the team is not going to promote a guy from Double-A if they're not pretty sure he's learned as much as he's going to in the minors. Very optimistic here though.

Steve (NC)

AJ! Alex Rios is raking. I think everyone is a little low on him in rankings. That being said, in a keeper league should I try to move him for a younger bat for the future? Who do you think I could land? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Is that you, Zola? I think Rios is top 50 this year, so unless I'm getting something close to that in terms of current production, I'm not dealing - regardless of age. I think people obsess to much on "3-5 years down the line" when they'd be better served focusing on the current year, at least until the final six weeks.

Max (NY)

All indications show Matt Moore is in for regression. 91.8 LOB% 4.20 FIP, to name just a couple indicators. Selling him in my league has proved extremely difficult. How hard do you believe his regression will hit? Will he be a top 20 SP ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

I don't think he's a top 20 pitcher now, and that's with an 8-0 record, so no way I expect him to be that high the rest of the way - because, as you say, that regression is real.

Brian (Boston, MA)

Who do you like better for the rest of the year? Gyorko or Arenado

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

I'm in the Gyorko camp on this one.

David Phelps (New York)

ROS = Phil Hughes OR David Phelps?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Phelps has looked good as a SP, but the telling thing to me is how many pitches the Yankees are letting him throw on a regular basis. It's as if they don't mind overworking him a bit right now, knowing the plan is to move him back to relief at some point. That's my only concern with him, because he's the better pitcher IMO.

Mike (NYC)

Going back to Matt Moore, would you rather have him or David Price?

Jacob (Ontario)

So as for Matt Moore, would you rather have Cole Hamels for the rest of the season ?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

Name game? Price, Hamels, Scherzer, Shields. All ahead of Moore.

Chris (Cape Cod)

AJ, Venable or DeJesus ROS (or at least until i can stomach putting BJ back in the lineup)?

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

Probably twice as positive a feeling I have for DeJesus.

Rosario or Mauer ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Unless you're looking for the HR total, it's Mauer. And remember, though the May re-ranks are already a bit out-of-date, you can ballpark a lot of these X or Y questions with them:

Larry ((DesMoines))

Who is more likely to turn it around this season? Hosmer or Konerko

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

I'm really hoping it's Hosmer. The potential is great with Eric, but yeah, frustration is rising and it's getting harder to wait it out. At least he's not Ike.

Nolan (STL)

Should I be concerned with the string of recent starts by Madison Bumgarner or is he a lock to be a top-10 pitchter the ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

Not sure why the concern. Colorado in the mix skews the results greatly, no? I had him behind only Kershaw in my pre-season ranks and still have him at No. 6 rest of the way.

Jeff (Johnsonville)

Rank them ROS: Matt Kemp, Chris Davis, Sin Soo Choo

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

Kemp, Choo, Davis. I'm going to admit I'm probably being a bit stubborn on Davis, but I just don't see the average/power combo sticking.

Skippy (Milwaukee)

Can you use fantasy sports to explain the world?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

Why I do believe you can: And in paperback, coming in July.

Brett (Calgary)

McClouth or Brantley ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

McLouth for me. But it's a large function of the SB totals in his case.

Kevin (Boston)

Todd Frazier has falled off the map. Is he an interesting buy-low option or stay away?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Still managing to hang in the top 100 despite having "falled off the map." But I don't see that lasting much longer. I'd "sented him away."

Rob (Odessa)

Pierzynski and Pollock spell their name A.J., but you leave out the periods. What gives?

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

Personal preference. Just ask CC Sabathia.

Mike (NYC)

What's the deal with Liriano

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

He's looked good in spurts before... I can't deny the results thus far, but I also can't trust them.

P (VA)

Jose Fernandez future fantasy ace?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

Potential? Yup. But he needs a lot more in the way of command before I think of him in the same way I look at guys like Harvey and Miller.

Derek (PA)

Brandon Morrow ok to run out there today?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

I wouldn't. Really, Santana's the only guy going today that I have any positive things to say. Do I like him better than most of the other nine guys scheduled today? Yeah. But what does that mean if Edwin Jackson is my No. 2 for Thursday?

Mike (BAL)

LeMahieu worth a pick up?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

Not really. I mean, he's got little pop and little speed, so you're banking on the batting average to keep up. For a week or so, maybe it will - but there's not a ton of upside here.

Bryan (California)

Do you think Kyle Gibson gets the call soon. They just sent someone down.

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Soon indeed. Gardenhire all but said he called up Deduno instead because it's a game with the Tigers. If it were the Astros, I think we'd have seen Gibson.

RSS (Detrua)

Brandon Belt or Luke Scott? ROS

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Scott for me on this one.

Chuck (MPLS)

Would you start Gausman today or wait and see? In daily notes he was ranked towards the bottom, but also listed as sleeper.

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

That's the thing with an unknown pitcher (in terms of major league experience.) He's a sleeper because I believe in the skills he brings, but there's also the fact that a debut brings a new routine and a nerve level that some pitchers do have trouble adjusting to out of the gate. It really comes down to how comfortable you are with that risk.

Fernando Rodney (Bullpen)

Is Jose Veras better than me?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Value to date, yes. Value to come, I do believe so.

Starling Marte (Pittsburgh)

In a H2H Mixed Keeper League, who would you rather have going forward ROS = Austin Jackson OR Starling Marte? Thanks AJ!

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

If not for the steals, it wouldn't even be a discussion. Jackson to me has far more upside this season in the other categories.

Drop Madson, roster ARod in a DL spot in a 12 teamer?

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

I don't know if I'd want to use the spot on A-Rod... but given the most recent setback for Madson, I certainly would have no issues if you let him go.

Brian (Seattle)

Rollins or Everth Cabrera-ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Very similar to Marte-Jackson. Cabrera is going to steal a lot of bases, so his value is tied to that category. Not that Rollins isn't going to have a few steals, as will Austin, but in the other 4 categories, this isn't even a contest. J-Roll.

Rebecca (Georgia)

Starlin Castro -- Good times coming, or not the guy we thought?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

How about a little bit of both? I'd go with good times coming, but at a slightly less stellar pace that I thought at the start of the season.

Matt (Boston)

Any faith at all in Hellickson bouncing back ROS? Looked OK last night

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

I mean, I ranked him, albeit at 166 of 250 players. So I don't think he's a bad SP option... just not on board with him being a must-start.

Phil (NYC)

Leonys Martin and Dirks - more upside than Ethier? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

Love me the Dirks... I think they're all in the same neighborhood, but given the recent Mattingly comments and the benching, one has to at least be a bit wary that Andre might not get as much PT going forward.

Jeff (Mpls)

No love for Jhonny Peralta in rankings? Do you see .300 and 20HR for the season?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

I had him ranked at 238 or so... ut I think I was the only one to do so. I think you're a bit high on power, but the average may be there, yes.

steve (nj)

aybar or alexi ramirez

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Very close call for me here, leaning slightly to Alexei. Don't love either, to be honest.

Anthony Jr (Seattle)

Should I drop Ian Kennedy or Doug Fister for Derek Holland?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Fister is legit. But I can see Ian Kennedy failing to improve enough for the rest of the season.

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

That's my time for today, gang! Thanks for the questions. I am typically on Twitter every day, so feel free to reach out to me there (@ajmass) and I'll try to get to you. Until the next time, as always, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
